00:00Volunteers in Wirral are hoping to take over the lease of a 90-year-old marine lake to protect
00:08its future for swimming and water sports. The Friends of New Brighton Marine Lake say they're
00:13concerned about deteriorating water quality with debris and rubbish frequently found in the lake
00:18and the risk of another blue-green algae outbreak. Wirral Council previously leased the lake to a
00:24water sports company which has since ceased trading. The volunteer group plans to submit
00:30a bid to take over the lease this summer. The council has confirmed that positive discussions
00:35are ongoing. Chair of the group Colin Clayton said the aim was to ensure every person can
00:41enjoy and benefit from the lake.
