Learning “How to Cut a Solid with a Surface” in CATIA is a key skill for anyone who wants to master advanced 3D modeling and product design. This technique allows you to modify complex parts by using surfaces as cutting tools, giving you far more flexibility than simple Boolean operations. In real-world engineering, parts often need to follow curved or irregular shapes—such as aerodynamic shells, molded components, or fluid flow parts—and cutting solids with surfaces is the most precise way to achieve those designs.

By learning this feature, you gain control over how solids interact with freeform or parametric surfaces, making your models more accurate and realistic. It also helps reduce modeling time, as you can use a single surface to define multiple cuts or trims, instead of manually sketching and extruding new shapes. This process enhances both design efficiency and quality, especially in industries like automotive, aerospace, and product manufacturing.

Mastering this skill also improves your understanding of CATIA’s surface and solid hybrid modeling environment, preparing you to handle complex assemblies and custom parts. Ultimately, knowing how to cut a solid with a surface in CATIA transforms your designs from basic geometric models into professional, production-ready components.

00:00hey everyone on this video guys i'm going to be showing you how you can cut a solid with a surface
00:06in katia okay but guys before we jump into the details do not forget to hit that subscribe
00:11button to join the savvy engineer community and without further ado let's jump to the video okay
00:18so the first thing that you need to do here is to go to start mechanical design part design then you
00:22enable the hybrid design option then you click on okay next you click on the xy plan then you click
00:28on sketch okay next you go and click on the center rectangle option i'm gonna draw a rectangle like
00:35this i'm gonna add here let's say 100 millimeter then i'm gonna do the same thing here 100 millimeter
00:46then i'm gonna exit the workbench i'm gonna go to pad i'm gonna add here 100 millimeter then i'm gonna
00:54click this plus sign to see the pad and the sketch next i'm gonna go to the yz plan then click sketch
01:02i'm gonna go and click on the spline command i'm gonna draw a spline like this then i'm gonna exit
01:08the workbench next i'm gonna go to start shape then generative shape design workbench i'm gonna go and
01:15click on extrude i'm gonna click on the second sketch i'm gonna add here 100 millimeter for the first
01:23limit and 100 millimeter for the second limit okay i'm gonna hide the second sketch okay then i'm gonna
01:33come back to the part design workbench then i'm gonna go to insert surface basic features then i'm gonna go
01:41and click on split i'm gonna click this surface if the arrow going up this means i'm gonna keep the upper
01:48side of the solid if i change the direction of the arrow this means that i'm gonna keep the bottom side
01:56of the solid so if i click on ok as you can see i kept the bottom side of the solid so this is how you can
02:05cut a solid with a surface in katia thanks for watching
