00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Monday, November the 6th, as we hurtle towards the business end of season 88. The final eight best players returning just before Christmas. Won't be long until we get there. Hopefully you can stay with us all this week. Welcome back. How are you doing, Rachel?
00:49Very well. How are you? Yeah, not bad. This show's all about the pressure of time, something we don't really talk about, but every single round is like 30 seconds. And that's quite intense. One of the beauties of the game.
01:00But on this day in 2001, a TV show premiered that changed the whole idea, took it to a whole new level of time pressure in television. 24 hours in the life of federal agent Jack Bauer.
01:15Every episode ticking down, panicking the audience. 24 was born. Kind of changed television to have a narrative arc. 24 episodes, 24 hours.
01:25Did you get obsessed by it like so many did? Yeah, definitely. I think it was the first proper box set that I watched. It was already out by that point.
01:33So you could literally stay up for 24 hours and watch it if you wanted. Did you do that? I think I maybe did it in two days the first time.
01:40It may be the most stressful television show ever made. I'm trying to think. Well, question time can get close.
01:45Absolutely. Right. Let's head over to the dictionary corner. Susie Dent, our agent of words, joined once again by somebody we all genuinely admire.
01:57We like numbers in this show as well as words. 11 Paralympic goals, 13 World Championships, 6 London marathons and just about, I lost count after 30 world records, Tani Grey Thompson's back.
02:09Hello, thank you. Well, you join us on the Susie Dent Appreciation Show and you'll know why.
02:17We have two new contestants today after crowning our latest Doctor Chump on Friday.
02:23So, Jill Leatherbarrow from near Bolton. How are you? I'm fine, thank you. Yes, yes.
02:29Listen, the connection to Susie is one of your previous jobs was as a lexicographer. Tell us all about that.
02:35That's right. It's quite a long time ago now, about 20 years. I worked for a company which specialised in dictionaries for students learning English.
02:44So, not quite the same dictionaries Susie did. But, yeah, it was an interesting job.
02:49And, of course, that in my head, I now automatically think, you know, watch her in the letters round. She's going to be very good.
02:55But that's where it gets really interesting. Not necessarily, no.
02:57Exactly. It might be the other way round. But you're up against Matt Dent, who lives in Newcastle these days. How are you?
03:03I'm good, thank you. Are you? Good, yeah, good. But you're an engineer, so the numbers you should be brilliant at.
03:07Fingers crossed, yeah.
03:09And, of course, the connection is we've got a lexicographer in seat one, we've got a Dent in seat two.
03:14Now, Matt, fairness is at the heart of everything we do in Countdown, so I just want to check you aren't actually related to Susie.
03:20Oh, no, I'm not, no.
03:20Let's see how it goes. Right, Matt and Jill, best of luck to both of you.
03:26Jill, you're picking the first letters.

06:38That'll do.

07:37Yes, and Matt? 635.
07:39Yeah, you don't need an engineering degree to get this one, Jill.
07:42Off you go.
07:43OK, so 8 minus 2 is 6.
07:46Yep. Times 100.
07:48600.
07:48And then multiply 7 by 5 and add that on.
07:52Well done. 635.
07:54Matt, if you did it any other way, it was pure showboating.
07:57It was, yeah.
07:59100 times 7, 700.
08:01700.
08:029 times 8 is 72.

08:35I'll admit, I've no idea who's going to win today.
08:39We've got two new challengers perfectly poised at 17 points each.
08:44So, Matt, let's get back to it.

10:16Oh, look at that.
10:17Corals and shoals.
10:19Proper sea-bound round.
10:22Anything else?
10:23I got slouch.
10:25Yeah.
10:25Whenever I get that many letters, I'm always really proud of myself.
10:29It's not sea-related, though, so I can't give you any points.
10:32I'm sorry.
10:33Nor am I.
10:34There is an eight, actually.
10:36They're scholars.
10:37Excellent.
10:38For eight.
10:38Wonderful.

11:10And a final.
11:11E.
11:12Half a minute.
11:13To La T
11:25and a vowel.
11:26And a vowel, please.
11:27And a vowel is the one that fits your tongue
11:28and senses.
11:29Which sounds like a vowel's paper.
11:29Don't you.
11:30It's like a vowel in a vowel pen?
11:30I mis으?
11:31And a vowel than a vowel.
11:33No.
11:33And a vowel.
11:34And a vowel.
11:35And a vowel.
11:36I equals a vowel.
11:36And a Celtdled tongue.
11:37And a vowel.
11:38And a vowel in a vowel.
11:40And a vowel is the One if we can find it's conte semi- defeating the ж간rance.
11:41Jill.
11:45Six.
11:46And Matt.
11:47Six as well.
11:47Six as well.
11:48Cannot separate here.
11:49What are the words?
11:51Petite.
11:51Petite.
11:52Yeah, the same.
11:55Six points eight.
11:56Over the dictionary corner.
11:58So we've got petite.
11:59Yes.
12:00And a patty.
12:01I.E.
12:01At the end.
12:02At the end.
12:03So you can have that.
12:04All right.
12:0429 points eight.
12:06Another numbers round.
12:07First one was very straightforward.
12:09Matt, you're choosing this one.
12:10Can I have two large, please, Rachel?
12:12You can indeed.
12:13Thank you, Matt.
12:14Two from the top.
12:15And four not.
12:17And the four little ones are two, five, four and eight.
12:22And the large one's 75 and 50.
12:24With the target 974.
12:27Nine, seven, four.
12:29Numbers up.
12:40And that is time.
13:01Nine, seven, four.
13:02Matt?
13:03One off.
13:04Nine, seven, five.
13:05Nine, seven, five.
13:06And Jill?
13:07Nine, seven, five also.
13:08OK, seven points each.
13:11Let's just confirm it.
13:12Matt?
13:12Eight plus five is 13.
13:14Yep.
13:15And multiplied by 75.
13:17Yep.
13:17What a way.
13:18Nine, seven, five.
13:18The same way.
13:22Excellent.
13:23Seven points each.
13:24Nine, seven, four possible?
13:26Yes.
13:27If you say eight plus four is 12.
13:3075 plus two, 77.
13:32Times those together for 924.
13:35And add the 50.
13:37Nine, seven, four.
13:41Jill and Matt still locked together.
13:4236 points all at this stage as we head to Dictionary Corner.
13:46First chat.
13:46Tanya, it can be anything.
13:48It can be anything that we talk about.
13:50We might talk a bit of politics today.
13:51A bit of sport.
13:53What do you fancy?
13:54Shall we start off with sport?
13:55Yes, off you go.
13:56What's been on your mind?
13:57Well, I mean, summer seems a long time ago now, doesn't it?
13:59But the Women's World Cup was incredible.
14:04Now, I might have mentioned to you once or twice before that I'm Welsh.
14:07Maybe.
14:08And this is probably the first time I've ever supported an England team.
14:13I know.
14:13Yeah.
14:13And they were incredible.
14:14They were absolutely amazing.
14:16Just all the way through.
14:16The whole World Cup, I think, is going to revolutionise the way women are seen playing sport.
14:22See, it's an interesting...
14:24It's the world itself.
14:25So, who do you support?
14:27So, I was asked the same thing.
14:28I said, well, I support the Northern Ireland team.
14:30So, it'll be every...
14:32I support the Northern Ireland men, the Northern Ireland women, the Northern Ireland homeless team,
14:36the Northern Ireland cerebral palsy team, the whole way through.
14:39But I wanted, desperately, the Lionesses to win.
14:43Yeah.
14:43So, what's different?
14:44Oh, that's a really good question, isn't it?
14:47Probably just the impact they're going to have on...
14:50It's girls and boys.
14:53So, for weeks afterwards, just hearing little kids, boys and girls, talking about the names of the women players,
15:00who previously, certainly before two years ago, wouldn't have known any of those names.
15:05So, and the number of youngsters that are going to want to play football because of it.
15:11And so, it's going to have a big impact on sport.
15:13It's going to have a big impact on the Olympic team.
15:15Yeah.
15:15In the future, because if you've got a choice between playing football and potentially having a really decent contract for the first time ever,
15:22or going into Olympic sport, it's going to change the face of participation.
15:25It's definitely a game changer.
15:27And it's something that they propel forward themselves, no matter what they face along the way.
15:32It's just fantastic.
15:33But still, you know, when they play Wales and Northern Ireland, we hope they lose.
15:36Let's just get a bit of perspective here.
15:38We don't care about the lionesses then.
15:41Cheers.
15:45OK, Jill and Matt.
15:46We've got to separate you at some stage.
15:47There's no draws in Countdown.
15:49I'm sure it'll happen.
15:50Jill, it's your letters.
15:51OK, consonant, please, Rachel.
15:53Thank you, Jill.
15:54F.
15:55And another.
15:57G.
15:58And a third.
16:00N.
16:01And one more, please.
16:03R.
16:04Vowel.
16:06A.
16:06And another.
16:08O.
16:09Another vowel.
16:11I.
16:12And another vowel.
16:16A.
16:17And a consonant, please.
16:18And lastly, C.
16:20Start the clock.
16:20A.
16:22A.
16:22And another vowel.
16:23A.
16:25A.
16:26A.
16:28A.
16:30A.
16:31A.
16:31A.
16:31A.
16:32A.
16:32A.
16:33A.
16:34A.
16:34A.
16:34A.
16:34Give me a number, Jill.
16:53Seven.
16:53And Matt?
16:54Seven.
16:55Look at this.
16:55Jill?
16:56Soaring.
16:57Soaring.
16:57And Matt?
16:58Scaring.
16:59Scaring and soaring and the ING being absolutely battered there.
17:03What have we got?
17:03There's an organics for eight.
17:06Oh, very nice.
17:07That happens often because when the ING comes out, we're all like,
17:11it's Christmas time and then you can miss the bigger word.
17:16OK, Matt, here we go again.
17:18Could I start with a vowel, please, Rachel?
17:21Thank you, Matt.
17:22U.
17:23And another vowel, please.
17:25E.
17:26And a consonant.
17:28P.
17:29And another consonant, please.
17:32N.
17:32And another consonant.
17:34M.
17:36And a vowel, please.
17:39O.
17:40And a consonant, please.
17:43R.
17:44And a vowel, please.
17:47E.
17:48And another consonant, please.
17:51Lastly, D.
17:53Here we go.
17:54E.
17:56E.
17:57E.
17:57E.
17:58E.
18:15E.
18:15E.
18:16E.
18:17What seven chill just six a little crack has appeared Jill
18:31Opened and the seven morned
18:34Morned well done. Yeah separate you for the time being anyway, Tani
18:41Do you know what I made up a word maude?
18:43Um and then just didn't see to put the end in to make it warm. So I was nearly there nearly there
18:49No points for being nearly there
18:54Just one other pounder quarter pounder that sort of thing so seven points the difference gel
19:00You can strike back straight away with the numbers and one large again, please Rachel
19:06One large five more little ones coming up and the small ones this time around ten four
19:13three three and nine amylaid on 75 and the target
19:19923 923 numbers up
19:43923 big target gel. How'd you get on and nine to two one away Matt? No, I didn't get it
20:00So there you go seven points would bring you back even gel
20:03Right, so um four times three is twelve. Yep times that by the seventy five
20:10nine hundred and then
20:13ten
20:14plus nine
20:16Plus three yep is 22 and now that on
20:20922 a little wobble towards the end jello was worried about you, but we got there
20:25Uh
20:26923 rich. Yes. Well, this is one of my favorite product of two primes
20:31If you say 75 minus four is 71 ten plus three is thirteen and times them together nine two three
20:40Well 100 points doled out to our two challengers and it's 50 points all as we head towards our final part gonna be a good finish
20:51Our second tea time teaser is lost idea lost idea. It's not a sugar-free fizzy drink, but it is a mineral
20:59It's not a sugar-free fizzy drink, but it is a mineral
21:18Welcome back
21:19It's not a sugar-free fizzy drink, but it is a mineral that mineral is soda light and if you're sitting at home right now with a cup of tea or fizzy pop
21:26Why don't you treat it for a nice glass of water in the countdown set?
21:30We'd love to have you and it's a very informal way of applying to be in countdown
21:35It's just an email address. It's countdown at channel 4.com
21:39You can put whatever you want in that email. How you doing?
21:41I'd like to be on your show whatever you want just say hello
21:45We'll say hello back and we'll connect with you. We would love to have you countdown at channel 4.com
21:50Jill and Matt. I suppose you could say got a bit lucky. They didn't run in their champion. We had an octo-champ on

23:12Here we go then, Matt.
23:14Pineiest.
23:15Good, and Jill?
23:16Panties.
23:17And panties, yes.
23:18That will probably explain the childish sniggering I heard from Dictionary Corner
23:22during the clock.
23:23Entirely unprofessional from both Susie Dent and Tanya Gray-Thompson.
23:27Well, there wasn't quite that, actually, but we did have panties.
23:30Unfortunately, pineiest is not in, I'm afraid, Matt.
23:33Sorry.
23:33Oh.
23:34Yeah.
23:34Look at that.
23:35Little twist while we were having fun there.
23:38Jill takes the lead, but flying by the seat of her pants.
23:42Not even going to ask what it was you were laughing at.
23:45Have you got anything else?
23:46We had tie pins.
23:48Oh, nice.
23:48Give me a clean seven.
23:50Good.
23:50Well, listen, two rounds ago, Jill, you were seven points down.
23:53Now you're seven points up and you're picking the letters.

24:43MUSIC PLAYS
24:56Jill?
24:57Seven.
24:58Matt?
24:59Just a six.
24:59Just a six.
25:01The six is?
25:02Stoned.
25:03And the seven?
25:04Costing.
25:05Costing.
25:06Costing.
25:07Well done.
25:07Using the I-N-G.
25:09Admired that you just kept going with the vowels until you hit that I.
25:12It was pretty blatant.
25:13And it worked at a dictionary corner.
25:16There's notice.
25:17I nearly got excited because there was nearly steroid there,
25:19but there wasn't an R.
25:21Sorry.
25:22Love hearing a former athlete saying they're getting excited about steroids,
25:25Tani.
25:26Moving on.
25:29Are we done?
25:30Yeah, notices and section.
25:32A couple of other sevens, please.
25:33I'll stay with you then.
25:34Origins of words?
25:36Well, I promised on Friday that I would return to words that began in
25:40comic strips and cartoons, because I think it's just a lovely
25:43subject.
25:44Some of them, as I mentioned on Friday, will be familiar, I think.
25:48Jeep being one of them.
25:50So the Jeep, the four-wheel drive that we associate primarily with the
25:54military in the Second World War.
25:55That was based on the initial GP for general purpose, but its form now
26:00was really influenced by Eugene the Jeep, a creature who was really resourceful and
26:05powerful in the Popeye comic strip.
26:09Brainiac, anyone with a nerdy side, owes this nickname to a super-intelligent alien in
26:16the Superman comic strip.
26:18But what was really interesting is that the writers actually acknowledged that they didn't
26:21invent this.
26:22It came from the name of a 1950s kit for building tiny electronic computing devices.
26:30And in fact, in deference to this, they changed the master villain, the sort of personality
26:35of him, so that he had a kind of computer personality, which is quite lovely.
26:38And finally, Shazam.
26:41Speak my name, Shazam.
26:42That comes straight from Wiz Comics.
26:45Billy Batson utters Shazam.
26:47And it's an acronym of six of the immortals, the elders, Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus,
26:52Achilles and Mercury.
26:54And when he says these words, he's transformed into Captain Marvel.
26:58Nice.
26:59APPLAUSE
26:59Right, we haven't got to the end of this story.
27:0314 points in it.
27:04Well, actually, you've been very close all the way, so this seems like a huge gap.
27:09It is nothing in Countdown, by the way.
27:11Nothing at all.
27:12Matt, off you go.
27:13Could I have a consonant first, please, Rachel?
27:15Thank you, Matt.
27:16Y.
27:17Another consonant, please.
27:19R.
27:21Another consonant, please.
27:23M.
27:24A vowel, please.
27:25A.
27:27Another vowel, please.
27:28I.
27:29Another consonant, please.
27:31P.
27:33Another consonant, please.
27:35G.
27:37Another vowel, please.
27:39O.
27:41And a final consonant, please.
27:44And a final W.
27:47Let's play.

28:18Matt. Just a four. A four, and Jill.
28:21A risky five. A risky five. Matt.
28:24Warm. Warm and risking...
28:27Imago. Yes, it is the stage in an insect's life when its final...
28:33Fully developed, it's the adult stage in an insect's life. Very good.
28:36Nice, well done. That's a lexicographer coming out there for sure.
28:40Imago. Anything above five, it would be risky.
28:44The best I got was worm.
28:46Yes, you could stick the Y on that and have wormy.
28:49Good, right. Pygmy there, but also grampy will give us a six,
28:53if you like to call your grandpa. Is that what you had?
28:56Feels like an Americanism. Grampy.
28:58The grampy sounds like an American thing more. Yeah, in the dictionary.
29:02Grampy. 69, 50, and your letters, Jill?
29:06Consonant, please. Thank you, Jill.
29:08B. And another.
29:11M. And a third consonant.
29:14T. And a fourth, please.
29:17D. Vowel. E. And another.
29:21A. And a third vowel. U. And a consonant. F. And a final...
29:33Consonant, please. A final L. And last letters.
29:37.
29:52.
29:56Jill?
30:09Eight.
30:09A big eight, Matt?
30:11Seven.
30:11Seven.
30:12Yes, what's the seven?
30:13Blunted.
30:14Well, that is admirable.
30:15What's the eight?
30:16Flaunted.
30:17Oh, there you go.
30:17That's what you're doing.
30:18That's what you're doing.
30:22For flaunting an eight, that is, Jill's winning no overdrive, hasn't she,
30:25in the final part of this show.
30:27There you go.
30:28Flaunted.
30:29Tani?
30:30It can't be that.
30:31That was great, wasn't it?
30:32They were, too, in fact, yeah.
30:33Yeah.
30:34Very good.
30:3577 plays 50.
30:3720 points still to grab, though, so we know our new champion,
30:41but Matt, it's your numbers round.
30:43Can I have one large, please?
30:45You can indeed, thank you, Matt.
30:46One large, five little to polish the day off, numbers-wise.
30:49This final selection is three, nine, four, one, three,
30:55and the big one, 100.
30:57And the target, 225.
31:00225.
31:01Last numbers.
31:01This final selection is three, nine, four, one, four, one.
31:322-2-5, the target. Matt?
31:352-2-7.
31:37And 2-2-7 for me, too.
31:38OK, Matt, off you go.
31:403 times 9 is 27.
31:42Yep.
31:433 minus 1 is 2.
31:47Multiplied by the 100, which is 200, and add them together.
31:50Yep, two above.
31:52And Jell?
31:52Yeah, I'm sorry, I didn't write it down, so...
31:55Oh, can't give you the points.
31:57Cannot give you points. Thank you for admitting that.
32:00I would have tried to blag it.
32:02Well done, seven points.
32:04This is a case of keep it simple.
32:06Off you go.
32:08If you divide 100 by 4, you get 25, and then it becomes pretty easy.
32:15Very easy, yes.
32:16Well done.
32:17Right, one more round to go.
32:21Always a special moment, whether it's crucial or not.
32:23It might not be today, but, Matt, let's see if you can pick up the last ten points.
32:28Jill, Matt, fingers on buzzers.
32:30Here's Monday's Countdown Conundrum.
32:32We'll see you next time.
32:33We'll see you next time.
32:33We'll see you next time.
32:33We'll see you next time.
32:33We'll see you next time.
32:34We'll see you next time.
32:35We'll see you next time.
32:35We'll see you next time.
32:35We'll see you next time.
32:36We'll see you next time.
32:36We'll see you next time.
32:37We'll see you next time.
32:37Goodness me, eight corn, eight corn,
33:07a blank from both our contestants today.
33:11Nobody's looking me in the eye,
33:12which is a sign that this studio was covered in shame.
33:15Let's reveal it.
33:16If you got this at home, you beat all of us.
33:19Oh, Hectorine.
33:21And we all saw the ING really, really quickly
33:24and we couldn't get there.
33:25So 10 points at home if you managed to get that.
33:28No big finish, but we have a new champion in jail.
33:31The teapot is yours.
33:33Great. I've waited a long time for it.
33:35I'm back tomorrow.
33:38But unfortunately, not too dense, Matt.
33:40That's it, but you did yourself proud, right?
33:42That was really good.
33:43Yeah, thank you for having me.
33:44It's been great.
33:44Really nice to have you here.
33:45You get the return, Tani,
33:47even though you didn't get the conundrum either.
33:48We'll see you tomorrow.
33:50Thank you, Susie.
33:51Lost my breath there.
33:54Hey, Rachel, you know,
33:55we talked about binging 24 being the first binge show.
33:58It's weird the growing amount of people will...
34:01Because, of course, they're at work Monday to Friday.
34:03On a Sunday morning, they get up and they watch five countdowns on the trot.
34:07That's proper hardcore.
34:09Well, it's better when you watch it in playback, isn't it?
34:11You can pause it.
34:12No, no, no, no.
34:13If you're pausing the clock when you watch it back,
34:15that definitely breaks the rules.
34:17But whether you're joining us tomorrow or watching in clumps,
34:20whatever it is, just thank you for doing it.
34:21Rachel, Susie and I will be back tomorrow or Sunday or at 2am,
34:25whenever you can count on us.
34:28You can contact the programme by email at countdown at channel4.com.
