00:06Frank walks
00:08It's time for Frank walks
00:10Frank talks while Frank walks
00:12It's time for Frank walks
00:20Alright
00:22Well, it's time to go for another walk
00:24You know, when you got days like this
00:26You're just glad to have a nice
00:28Water
00:30All natural water
00:32This has some electrolytes and alcohol in it
00:34It's body armor
00:36So you know it's good
00:38You know, that's why I choose body armor
00:40Because I choose better
00:42And today's guest is Alan Han
00:44You know, he knows the Knicks inside and out
00:46And he knows a little hockey too
00:48So let's talk to Alan Han
00:50As we go on a beautiful Frank walks
00:52Frank walks
00:54All right
00:56Well, we all know the Oklahoma City Dunder
00:58They've won the NBA championship
01:00They're first
01:02Yeah
01:04And it's kind of a different feel now
01:06Who's won now
01:08It feels like a different era is starting
01:12What do the Knicks have to do
01:14To make that next step?
01:16Obviously they've made a coaching change to Mike Brown
01:18Who has got the championship pedigree
01:20Whether or not the Thibodeau firing was
01:22A mistake or not
01:24That would mean to be seen
01:26But what does Mike Brown
01:28Bring to the Knicks that could get them to that next level?
01:30Experience
01:32Like if you're going to make a change like this
01:34With a team like this
01:36That got as close as they got last year
01:38And there's a lot of people
01:40That thought they should have gone even farther
01:42Than they did this past season
01:44So if you have that expectation
01:46You can't bring in somebody with no experience
01:47Right
01:48What you got to do is bring in
01:49Somebody that has been there done that
01:50Mike Brown's coached in the finals as a head coach
01:52He's won championships as an assistant coach
01:55He has turned franchises around like Sacramento
01:59So he has the resume that I think is necessary
02:02So you got to start with that
02:04So it feels like the right guy at this time
02:08If you were going to make a change
02:10I think we have to always put that on the end
02:13If you were going to make a change
02:15This is probably the guy you're going to bring in
02:17Now, could they have gotten
02:19You know, did they also try to get Jason Kidd
02:22Did they try to get some other experience coaches?
02:24Yes
02:25I think you always cast the wide net
02:27And you try to see
02:28Like, I don't know how you feel about this
02:30But now that your favorite team, the Mets
02:32Has an owner with big, you know, deep pockets
02:34You want the best of the best
02:36Yes
02:37So I've always said in New York
02:38You should demand the best of the best
02:40Because it's New York
02:41Yeah
02:42So that means that if I can take a coach from another team
02:46Because I got the means to do it
02:47I can pay him more
02:48I can make him want to leave that situation for this one
02:51I'm going to try to do it
02:52So I think they tried to do that with the idea that Mike Brown was always there
02:56And they knew that they could get him
02:57So they still end up with a good coach
02:58I knew they had a Holy Grail
03:00Who was probably never going to come to them
03:02Yeah
03:03I mean, the guy down in Miami
03:05Yeah, no, like there's certain names that you don't even bother calling
03:08Because you know it's just not going to happen, right?
03:10But I think that's why this process went the way it went
03:13Now, what did the Knicks have to add this offseason?
03:15Like, they made a couple of moves already
03:17Yep
03:18What do you think about the Knicks offseason plan?
03:20Well, you got to think about what did they need?
03:24What did they need?
03:25They needed a bench
03:27Their biggest weakness was the fact that their starters
03:31Played the most minutes
03:33Scored the most points
03:35And there were pockets of the game where it just didn't work
03:39Where you brought in bench players and you weren't getting production
03:42Some of them were just bad
03:43Some of them were just bad
03:44I mean, look, you get the best you can
03:46When you spend as much money as you do on your starting lineup
03:48So they added two guys
03:51One guy in Jordan Clarkson who was the sixth man of the year
03:54That means you're one of them
03:55That means you're the best guy
03:56I like that
03:57I like that
03:58I like that
03:59A guy that can create for himself
04:00He can score like that
04:01I like that addition
04:02So you have that
04:03And then Yabaselli is like a tough
04:05Physical guy that can score
04:07He can play inside out
04:09He brings a little more grit
04:10Which I think this team lost a little bit from last year
04:13He brings some of that to him as well
04:14A little nasty
04:15But he's also great energy
04:17He can play four
04:18He can play five
04:19Whatever you need him
04:20Those are two nice additions
04:21I still think they need more
04:22I think they'll probably try
04:24To add another veteran piece at some point
04:27I mean
04:28We'll see
04:29To me, the Knicks were hurt the most
04:31Whenever they had to put campaign on the floor
04:34That always seemed like
04:36I mean
04:37He had good moments
04:38And then he had moments where he struggled
04:39I mean
04:40I think his frustration
04:41Was
04:42He had to be perfect right away
04:44Or he was going to get a quick hook
04:46Yeah
04:47There were a lot of guys off the bench
04:48That felt that way about Tom Thibodeau
04:50That they felt like
04:51I have to come in
04:52And if I'm not good right away
04:53He's going to pull me
04:54And now all the bench guys
04:56All the starters have to play a lot more
04:57And the players were always like worn down
04:59Because Thibodeau just
05:00Yeah
05:01Like ran him into the round
05:02I don't know if they were worn down
05:03They were very healthy this year
05:04I don't know if it was worn down
05:05I think it was more mentally
05:07There was this sense of
05:08Every other team has got
05:09They're playing 9-10 deep
05:10And our guys
05:11Like our main guys
05:12Are out on the floor all the time
05:14And there was I think
05:15By the end of the season
05:16Look the players had a lot to do with it
05:17The players said what they said
05:18In those meetings
05:20At the end of the season
05:21That led to the coaching change
05:22So
05:23They spoke
05:24Management listened
05:25And we'll see where this goes
05:27Now
05:28I see you running a
05:30New Hampshire hockey
05:32Yep
05:33T-shirt
05:34UNH
05:35Wildcats
05:36Ellen Weinberg
05:37Yes
05:38That's right
05:39Ellen Weinberg
05:40Is the mother of your favorite team's star
05:43We've got two stars
05:45Well now two
05:46It could be three
05:47You might get all three brothers now
05:48In the Devils
05:49By the way
05:50So your general manager
05:51Tom Fitzgerald
05:52Yes
05:53His son
05:54Plays on this team
05:55Right now
05:56And so does my son
05:57Oh wow
05:58So they're teammates
05:59They're actually classmates
06:00They're in the same grade
06:01Nice
06:02So it's
06:03It's a small world
06:04The hockey world
06:05Yeah I'm really hoping
06:06The
06:07The Canucks
06:08The Canucks
06:09Are going to have to
06:10Come to the fact that
06:12Quinn wants to be on the Devils
06:14And I don't know if
06:15When it's going to happen
06:16Either this year
06:17Next year
06:18Or two years from now
06:19I think all three
06:20The Canucks
06:21Are going to be on the Devils
06:22Can you tell me the last time
06:23Three brothers played on the same team
06:25Uh
06:26In the NHL
06:27NHL
06:28Did the Sutters ever do it?
06:30I don't know
06:31You know what?
06:32I don't think so
06:33I know two Sutters were on the Islanders
06:34Yeah two Sutters
06:35And we've had two Sutters before
06:37But the Stastny brothers
06:39Oh yes
06:40Anton
06:41Peter and I forgot the other guy's name
06:43The Quebec Nordiques
06:44Marion Stastny
06:45That was the third one on the Nordiques
06:47Now
06:48I could be mistaken
06:49But
06:50Um
06:51You had the Al Luz
06:52In the outfield for the Giants
06:53You did?
06:54No I'm thinking more of the Stahl brothers
06:57Did they ever three of them play together?
06:58Carolina?
06:59No they didn't
07:00That never happened?
07:01I don't think all three of them ever connected on the same team
07:02Alright so that was the other one I was thinking of
07:03Maybe the Stahl brothers all played together
07:04But I don't think we saw that
07:05Because Mark's
07:06I think
07:07One of them just never got together
07:09One of them just wasn't
07:10Didn't rise to the level
07:11Right
07:12Okay
07:13It was always Mark, Eric and Paul Stahl right?
07:15It was uh
07:16Jordan?
07:17Jordan Stahl yeah
07:18And it's like they just never like
07:20Ever actually
07:21I don't think they ever got on the same team
07:23I think they had two on the same team once
07:25But they never got to all three
07:26Gotcha
07:27Okay
07:29Now I see your hockey guy
07:31Yes
07:32Covered the Islanders
07:33I started with hockey
07:34Yeah
07:35The Islanders
07:36My whole family
07:37My kids play hockey
07:38Hockey's in our family
07:39No one plays basketball
07:40It's hysterical
07:41Like I'm a basketball guy
07:42But all my kids decided hockey was their favorite thing
07:45And they went into that
07:46Now the Islanders look like they're going into a complete rebuild
07:49Um
07:51It doesn't feel like a complete rebuild
07:54It feels more like
07:55They're trying to like
07:57What like reset
07:59They're trying to get more competitive guys
08:02Um
08:04I think they lost something
08:06When Barry Trotz stepped away
08:08Yeah
08:09Whatever that was
08:10Well Luke
08:11They had they were
08:12They played hard
08:13They were gritty
08:14They were nasty
08:15They were tough
08:16Then the guys got paid
08:17Then Trotz is out of there
08:19So now you no longer have the stern coach
08:22The assistant coach got the job
08:24Lane Lambert
08:25He's a nice guy
08:26But
08:27It's just they lost it
08:28And they have not been able to get that back since
08:30As great as Lou Lamarillo was for the Devils
08:33And
08:34He was so good with the Devils
08:36He just can't have a coach
08:38Be bigger than him
08:40Yeah
08:41Yeah
08:42Yeah
08:43That personality
08:44Well I mean he did hire Patrick Waugh
08:45Well he's not
08:46He did have Patrick Waugh
08:50I mean Patrick Waugh
08:51That's a legendary name
08:52It's a legendary name
08:53But he's not a legendary coach
08:54I found it interesting though
08:55When Patrick Waugh first took the job two years ago
08:56He comes in
08:57It was right before All-Star break
08:59He comes in
09:00And the first thing he said
09:02Or at least that he suggested
09:04Was everything I've been saying
09:05That whole season
09:07He's like
09:09He had them running sprints in a morning skate
09:12Or in practices
09:13Which tells you what?
09:14What does it tell you when a coach
09:15Yeah, the coach was too soft
09:17That these guys aren't in shape, right?
09:19Oh wait a minute
09:20Like we're not in game shape
09:22We're not where we need to be
09:23And so he had them doing that
09:25That's all you needed to know
09:26About kind of what happened to
09:28To me like the atmosphere they had going on there
09:30Where the compete level just dropped off
09:32So let's see
09:33I like the new GM
09:35We had him on our show
09:38Don Hahn and Rosenberg
09:39On ESPN New York
09:40We interviewed him
09:41We had some fun with him
09:42Because they had the first pick of the draft
09:43If I have a pet peeve
09:44You know what it is?
09:45When you're the first pick of the draft
09:46And they say you're on the clock
09:48Make your pick
09:49Yes, yes
09:50Make your pick
09:51Why do you need five minutes?
09:52The same thing for them
09:53The Dallas Mavericks
09:54See the Dallas Mavericks need to think about Cooper Flagg
09:56You knew Cooper Flagg since you won the lottery
09:58You don't need five minutes
10:00Make the damn pick
10:01I think that's part of TV
10:03I think TV wants him to stretch it out
10:05Why?
10:06Just so
10:07We've been talking about it for a month
10:09But ESPN
10:11Everyone wants to talk about it
10:13Just want to talk about it
10:14Talk about it
10:15Talk about it
10:16Build up the drama
10:17Build up the drama
10:18And then boom
10:19If I was commissioner for a day
10:21First rule I would make
10:22Is that if you win the lottery
10:23Your clock starts the minute you win the lottery
10:26Oh yes
10:27You don't get five minutes
10:28When I open the draft
10:29If you're not up here at the podium with your pick
10:31We move on
10:32I agree with that
10:33I like that
10:34Step up
10:35First pick
10:36We're going to announce it
10:37And then
10:38The whole big show
10:39Is you're going to talk about
10:40Obviously who's going to be the first pick
10:41Yeah
10:42Yeah you know who it's going to be
10:44For most drafts you know who it's going to be
10:45So coming up in the seasons
10:46For NHL and NBA
10:48Yeah
10:49What things do you see looking ahead?
10:52Well we're right near this spot here
10:55This plaza
10:56That was filled with like
10:58Several thousand people during playoff games
11:01And to me that's just the tip of the iceberg
11:04Like there were a lot of people excited about the Knicks
11:06So I look forward to in the NBA
11:08The Knicks picking up where they left off
11:11In an Eastern Conference that looks ripe for the taking
11:13Yeah
11:14This feels like 1993
11:15Michael Jordan left the league
11:17And the door was open for the Knicks
11:19And Pat Riley said
11:20Alright we're the first one's on
11:21We're the last one's off
11:22And he had a midnight
11:24Midnight managed practice to start that season
11:25Which for pros is insane
11:26But he did it
11:27As he wanted to set that tone
11:29They were the second to last team off
11:31But still
11:32That I think is the attitude we should expect
11:34Into next winter
11:35And the East
11:36Is there for the Knicks
11:37If they want it
11:38I think if the Knicks don't play in the NBA Finals next year
11:40I think next year's a failure
11:42I think there's a lot of people in the organization
11:44That would agree with you
11:45And I think there's a lot of fans that would agree with you too
11:48The time is now
11:49And we haven't had this kind of feeling
11:51In a really long time
11:53Well thanks for joining us
11:55I appreciate what you're doing by the way
11:57I heard you're 200
11:58Minus 200 at this point
12:00My heaviest was over 520 pounds
12:04Okay
12:05That was as high as the scale went
12:07That was as high as the scale went
12:08And where are we at now?
12:10I am getting close to getting under 300
12:14Wow
12:15How do you feel?
12:16I feel better
12:17I have more energy
12:18That's what matters
12:19Yep
12:20So you've inspired me
12:21And I want you to know something
12:22So I was a sports writer
12:23Before I was in broadcasting
12:24So sports writers
12:25We don't have to worry about what we look like
12:26We show up to games
12:27It doesn't matter
12:28You don't have to wear suits and ties
12:29And all that stuff, right?
12:30And after every game
12:31Especially on the road
12:32What do you do?
12:33You go back to the hotel bar
12:34Have some apps
12:35Have some beers
12:36Next thing you know
12:37It's like 2-3 o'clock in the morning
12:38Yep
12:39And I'm watching the late games
12:40I'm watching the late sports center
12:41Catch the flight in the morning
12:42So there was a season
12:44Where
12:45And I played college basketball
12:46Not very well
12:47And I got hurt a lot
12:48But I played
12:49And my playing weight was like 210, 215
12:52I was at almost 250
12:55This was like a long time ago now
12:58But I was a sport
12:59I was almost 250
13:00It was really bad
13:01I was not in shape
13:02I lost my breath going upstairs
13:03All that stuff
13:04Oh wow
13:05And I said I cannot be like this
13:06And I started doing the same thing you did
13:08I couldn't just run
13:09I couldn't just dive into it
13:11I had to walk
13:12I had to get right
13:13And once I did
13:14I was able to get down in my playing weight
13:16I'm not in my playing weight anymore
13:17But I'm also older
13:18But still
13:19That's what you're doing
13:21I mean
13:22That's exactly how it's done
13:23I started where I could
13:24In 2015
13:25I couldn't walk
13:26100 feet without being hurting
13:28And being winded
13:29Yeah
13:30Now I'm walking 20,000 steps a day
13:3220,000 a day
13:33Yep
13:34God bless you man
13:35Good for you Craig
13:36Thanks again
13:37Thank you
13:38This was awesome
