South Wales Police did a routine security check of St Fagan’s in the week leading up to the theft of ‘irreplaceable’ Bronze Age artefacts. Senedd Members are concerned that other collections could be at risk.

00:00St. Wagon's National Museum of History remains at the centre of a major police investigation
00:06following the theft of priceless Bronze Age gold's jury.
00:10The break-in happened in the early hours of Monday 6th October, where police were called
00:15just after half past 12, after security staff raised the alarm.
00:19When officers arrived, they found a display case had been smashed and several historic
00:23artefacts, thousands of years old, had been taken.
00:27In development that's likely to raise further questions, it's understood South Wales police
00:31had carried out a routine security check at the museum just a week before the robbery.
00:37Two men aged 43 and 50, both from Northampton, have now been arrested on suspicion of burglary
00:42and remain in custody.
00:44The theft also prompted concern in the Senate, with politicians warning the other national
00:50collections could be at risk.
00:51Plaid Cymru Emma S. Halavichen told members that she's sure that all of us have been
00:56shocked by the news of the theft at St Fagans.
00:59These are the collections of the people of Wales, our national collections, and there
01:03have been warnings because of cuts to the sector that their safety could now be under threat.
01:09Respondent for the Welsh Government, Social Justice Secretary Jane Hutt said it is a horrific
01:13loss in terms of the theft from St Fagans Museum.
01:16We thank staff, who quickly raised the alarm, and South Wales Police for their speedy response.
01:21Gheath for Cymru has increased security at all sites and is working with police to see
01:25if any further precautions are needed.
01:28South Wales Police have not revealed which items were stolen or their value, but searches
01:33for the artefacts are ongoing, as staff and visitors alike hope these irreplaceable pieces
01:38of Welsh history can still be recovered.
