01:50It's all come to light this morning
01:53They've contacted us to say

01:56We've got some concerns about
01:57who's hired the vehicle

02:00Fake driving licence etc
02:02So we're pretty sure it's criminality
02:04Incidents like this are increasingly common
02:07With criminals stealing cars to commit offences and avoid detection
02:11The car at the moment is 1.8 miles away from where we are
02:15In this case, the car, a white Audi A4
02:19Is fitted with a live tracking device
02:21The important thing for us is it's been put in stolen to the police
02:24So the plan is now to go and track the car
02:27Speak to the police and recover it
02:29Neil will be using two vehicles to track the stolen car
02:33He'll drive one of them himself
02:35And trackers Alan and Mike will be in the other
02:38They'll be getting constant updates
02:41From their live tracking team back at base
02:43It's just turning onto Cliff Road
02:47That's Cliff with an E
02:49Off Selston Road
02:51Well, what we'll do is we'll head towards it
02:53And then once we can locate it
02:56Then that's the idea then to speak to the police
02:58And we can do that as well from here

03:00To say, right, we're with a stolen vehicle now

03:03Neil and his team are tracking the car using a GPS signal
03:07Accurate to within two to three metres
03:10He's taken the most bizarre route
03:13Because he's done a massive circle
03:15Gone back on himself
03:16And now he's going, looks...
03:20Oh, he's just coming to a junction now
03:22If he turns left, he's basically going back to where he started
03:24But he's just done two massive loops
03:28With only one stop
03:30The stolen vehicle's weaving its way around Croydon
03:34Getting behind it isn't easy
03:36Yeah, I think, especially going around London
03:40The issue that you've got is that
03:41You just can't go anywhere fast
03:43So you just can't make up any time, really
03:45But as new tracking information comes through
03:48The team may have an unexpected opportunity to gain ground
03:52It looks like he's stationary at the moment
03:55It's ignition on, but stationary
03:59Neil is becoming increasingly suspicious of the driver's movements
04:04It seems to be going on short journeys
04:08Almost like, you know, a courier or a delivery person
04:12You know, why would you make, you know, multiple stops
04:15In a local neighbourhood
04:16Underneath railway bridges and things like that
04:20So, you know, we don't want to jump to conclusions
04:22But that would, you know, that raises certain suspicions for me
04:26Without the tracker on board
04:28Tracing a stolen car in such a congested area
04:31Would be almost impossible
04:33You wouldn't believe he's just on the move now

05:02The driver of the stolen vehicle
05:05Has no idea his every move is being tracked
05:08He's heading straight for Neil
05:10And they're just minutes apart
05:12He's just turned down Lansdowne Road
05:14So they're heading south
05:15Down Lansdowne Road now
05:18Okay, we're just turning into Lansdowne Road now
05:21Later, Neil comes face to face
05:24With the driver of the stolen Audi
05:26One Asian man
05:27Looks in his sort of 40s, 50s maybe
05:31I can't see anybody else in the car
05:33But it's not just cars that the criminals target
05:41The theft of plant machinery is a growing problem
05:44Tracking specialist Richard Taylor
05:47Has received a call from a plant hire company
05:49In Waltham Abbey
05:50They've had two of their vehicles stolen
05:53What's occurred here is that our customer
05:56Has been contacted
05:57By seemingly one of their customers
06:01Requesting a machine to be delivered
06:04An 8-tonne Kubota digger
06:06And they delivered this machine
06:08Thinking it was a legitimate customer request
06:10And thought no more of it really
06:12Then a few days later
06:14They requested another machine
06:15A second machine
06:16A 5-tonne Kubota
06:17The stolen vehicles are worth 120 grand in total
06:23The criminals have been back in touch with the victims
06:27To make another fraudulent hire
06:29So they've called on Richard to run a sting operation
06:32The first two machines
06:36Were not fitted with our theft recovery system
06:38So we can't activate them to go and recover them
06:40So the plan here is to allow this bandit
06:44To take a third machine
06:45And this time for us to make sure it's fully trackered up
06:48Richard's banking that the trackers
06:52Which are installed on the decoy machine
06:54Will lead him to the stolen diggers
06:56But if it goes wrong
06:58The company could lose a third vehicle
07:01What we're all hoping for
07:04Is that they'll turn up and take it away
07:07And hopefully take it to some yard nearby
07:09Where the other two machines are resting up
07:12We may have difficulties in tracking and recovering
07:15Even this third vehicle
07:16Depends who we're dealing with
07:18But there are methods that these criminals can use
07:20To try and outwit us
07:22And we have our technology
07:24That can deal with most scenarios that they use
07:27But you never know
07:30And we can't guarantee
07:32That this sting vehicle will be recovered as well
07:36We can't guarantee that
07:37There's a risk associated with that
07:39There's been a recent surge
07:42In bogus hire of plant equipment
07:44By thieves impersonating genuine customers
07:47And some of these criminals
07:48Will stop at nothing
07:50To get their hands on the valuable kit
07:52It's the worst case scenario for this operation
07:55Is we are dealing with some real organised professionals
07:58A major gang
08:00They could be armed
08:01They could be willing to use those weapons
08:05They could be very aggressive
08:06If we were to confront them
08:09Even if the police were to confront them
08:10You know, we may need an armed response
08:13So the worst thing that could happen
08:14Is we find the machines, maybe
08:17And then somebody ends up getting hurt
08:19Richard meets manager Dan
08:24At the plant hire company
08:25To check out the vehicle he'll be tracking
08:27So this is the machine that we've...

08:30All right, you've got four trackers in there
08:33So we've got two battery ones
08:34Two wired ones
08:36So the plan will be
08:38In terms of tracking this vehicle
08:40That the office will track it
08:43On one of the live trackers

08:48Right, so really accurate
08:50They will then tell us exactly where it's travelling
08:52And we'll be tracking it
08:54By about half a mile behind
08:55You know, and we'll always keep
08:56Sort of that distance
08:57I've already decided
08:59Wherever this goes in the UK
09:00We're going to follow it
09:01To try and get these other two machines
09:03Yeah, that's the objective

09:06Taking this risk

09:09And get these people arrested
09:11It's a good risk to take
09:14Considering the value of the two machines
09:16That they've already had
09:17It means getting one machine back
09:18Then we've reduced the hit
09:21If we can even find these guys
09:22And get them off the streets as well
09:24Then that's an added bonus to everyone
09:25It's not the first
09:28And it definitely won't be the last
09:29But we want to make sure that
09:30It doesn't happen to anyone again
09:32But it is happening on a weekly basis
09:34It's nearly time for the sting vehicle

18:29So most people will be just looking at the traffic
18:30Or what's going on around them
18:32We're definitely well hidden there
18:33Because I've got to sort of move around

18:36And there's no way we're going to be spotted here

18:42Our plan is to stay here for a few hours this morning

18:46But it's all trackered up

19:38When the bait vehicle is stolen
19:41Along with eight other machines
19:43So we've come here to try and see
19:45What the hell's going on at this location
19:47Crime statistics show that around 130,000 vehicles
19:57Were stolen between April 2023 and March 2024
20:02One of the country's hot spots is the West Midlands
20:07One victim of car crime is Nadine Sandal
20:13Who lives with her husband and two children in Dudley
20:16I decided that I wanted to buy a bit more of a luxurious car
20:21Than what I usually would go for
20:23So I bought a BMW convertible
20:27And, you know, originally loved the car
20:29So my kids had got that little bit older
20:32Where I hadn't got to put pushchairs, etc. into the boot of the car
20:35So I thought, oh, I'll cheat myself and get a better car
20:38Which then suited all of the family
20:40But then Nadine discovered just how desirable her BMW was
20:47My husband woke up at about 6 o'clock to go and walk the dog
20:53As he left the house
20:56He then realised that the car wasn't there
20:59So he sort of, you know, did a double take
21:03As if where is the car
21:04He then came back into the house
21:06And could see that the key was still there
21:08So at that point then, he shouted upstairs to me
21:12Nadine's doorbell camera caught the thieves in action
21:16We both then looked at the ring footage
21:19And we could actually see that the car was stolen at about 11pm
21:24We'd only been asleep upstairs for about 45 minutes
21:27We saw that two gentlemen had come down the drive
21:31And at this point they'd already gained access into the car
21:34One person had then got into the car
21:37And another person was holding some form of device
21:40Up against the windows
21:42So they then got the signal from the key
21:45Which then allowed them to start the ignition on the car
21:49So once they'd got that
21:51They basically, the other gentleman got in the car
21:53And they drove off with the car
21:55Keyless car theft, also known as relay theft
22:00Continues to increase across the UK
22:03A thief using this technique
22:06Uses software to extend the range of the signal the key is broadcasting
22:10Even when it's inside the home
22:12Activating the unlocking sequence and allowing the car to be driven
22:16We just couldn't believe it initially
22:20Myself, my husband and my two children were fast asleep upstairs
22:23You know, it made us feel sick to the stomach
22:25That somebody was then in possession of my car
22:29My hard-earned money
22:30And somebody else had pinched it
22:32You'd saw it happen in the local community
22:35And other cars being stolen
22:37But it was like, it's not going to happen to us
22:39You know, we don't need to worry
22:40And all of a sudden, it's happened to us
22:43At that point then, it suddenly dawned on me that I had the BMW app
22:48So I logged into the app to have a look
22:51And there it was
22:53It was saying that my car was about six miles away in Briley Hill
22:56So at that point, my husband said
23:01I'm going to go in my car to the last known location and see if it's still there
23:05However, call the police for me
23:07So at least when I get there, they can be there
23:10The police advised Nadine's husband not to approach the vehicle
23:15As the potentially dangerous criminals could have been nearby
23:18Officers arrived at the scene within minutes
23:22Once we got the car and we received the car back
23:27We obviously gave the car a good once-over just to double-check
23:30So we looked all around the external of the car and there was no damage at all
23:34We then looked internally
23:35There was some centre console damage
23:37Where it looked like they tried to remove some wires to see if there was a tracker
23:41And we think they thought that maybe they had got the tracker out at that point
23:45But clearly they hadn't
23:46Because we could obviously still see on the app where the car was at that point in time
23:51Unsurprisingly, the incident left the whole family badly shaken
23:57It made us just feeling really, really terrible and quite violated
24:03That somebody could have done this to us
24:06And, you know, taken, you know, something that we'd worked really, really hard for
24:11I'm more conscious now
24:14I'm more conscious when my ring doorbell does go off
24:18And if it's later of the night, I will get up and have a look
24:21Where previously I probably wouldn't have
24:23Again, just double-checking that everything's okay
24:26Nadine has now taken serious measures to prevent her car being taken from the driveway again
24:33It can happen to anybody
24:35So I would definitely look at your security measures within your home
24:39You know, from an external point of view and an internal point of view
24:43You know, the bollards that we had installed were very, very inexpensive
24:46But actually, it's a deterrent straight away
24:50They see them and they're not going to bother
24:53And then also, just make sure you're downloading the apps
24:55You know, do whatever you possibly can
24:58That can help and support you in trying to locate the car
25:01And securing your cars within your property
25:03Cars with keyless entry unlock automatically
25:12When the key comes within a short distance of the car
25:15But this technology can make cars more vulnerable to being stolen
25:20In fact, it's estimated between 60 and 70% of cars stolen in the last year were keyless models
25:29A criminal using keyless or relay theft
25:34Use as technology to intercept the signal from a car to unlock it and start the ignition
25:40But there are steps you can take to avoid relay crime
25:48When you're at home, keep your keys away from the car windows and doors
25:53Use a signal-blocking Faraday bag
25:58Park the car in a garage overnight
26:01And a steering wheel lock can act as a deterrent
26:05Two days after leaving the bait vehicle at a drop-off point in Leicestershire
26:16Richard Taylor got an alert that it was on the move
26:20As soon as that movement alarm came in
26:23We were sort of on it like a rash, really
26:24When we were checking the GPS, it just literally drove down the road
26:28It went probably 150 metres
26:31And we thought, you know, we've got a GPS
26:34We don't need to do the RF
26:35Let's just get the police there as soon as possible
26:38We can't risk that bait vehicle going missing as well
26:41Even though we've tracked it up to the hill
26:43Guided by Richard, police raced to the site
26:49And retrieved the bait vehicle
26:50But there was no sign of the two diggers
26:53And that wasn't the end of it
26:56The customer carried out an audit of their hires
27:00And discovered a further eight valuable machines were missing
27:03One of the vehicles was fitted with Richard's tracker
27:08So he's led police to a lock-up in Coventry
27:11And they're about to raid it
27:13Are we going to find all eight of these machines?
27:17Are we just going to find one machine?
27:18Are we just going to find the tracker on the floor?
27:21What's going to happen?
27:31Richard then receives news that officers have discovered
27:35A shocking 14 machines
27:37Eight of them belonging to his customer
27:40And that's a win for Richard
27:43Well, I'm more than happy
27:45That's probably one of the biggest results we've had
27:48Certainly for one tracking device
27:50I mean, that's led us to all eight machines in that building
27:53And our customer is over the moon
27:55Just makes my day
27:59It really does
