05:39so he needs to wait for the police to back up.
05:43We could easily just get out and have a look at the vehicle
05:45but we'll wait for the police first of all.
05:47What I might do is just park up the road a little bit
05:50because you just never know when somebody's going to come back to the car.
05:54Neil moves out of harm's way
05:56and finds a safe place to stake out the Hilux.
06:01We'll park here so we can now see
06:04the vehicle through this fence
06:07and we're far enough out of the way that they won't be able to see us.
06:12We just wait for the police.
06:14Meanwhile, Alan calls with an update.
06:19Hi Alan, are you OK?
06:21Yeah, not too bad, not too bad.
06:23I spoke to the police, they said they want that fingerprint
06:26so they're going to turn out to it
06:28but it just didn't give me time as of when.
06:30OK, that's fine. All right, thanks, Alan. Speak to you later.
06:32I'll speak to you later. Thank you. Bye-bye.
06:34If the police can gather enough DNA evidence from the vehicle,
06:37they might be able to figure out who's targeting this Hilux.
06:40So Neil knows he has to play the waiting game.
06:43We know how the police operate because they want it for forensics.
06:46You know, it's the best thing for us not to go anywhere near it.
06:50You know, we don't want to compromise any of their investigation.
06:53Later, as Neil stakes out the Hilux,
06:57two people appear to be very interested in the car.
07:00And he's forced into action.
07:02Emergency reserve?
07:04Police, please.
07:12Yeah, we just got a geofence error on the excavator.
07:16It's early evening, but Tracker Richard's heading out on another theft recovery.
07:21Right, Jack, I'm on my way.
07:23All right, yeah, I'll give you a ring. Take care.
07:25OK, see you soon. Bye.
07:27Two mini-diggers worth more than £50,000
07:30have been stolen from a plant hire company in Birmingham.
07:33One of them's fitted with a tracker.
07:39We received a call late this evening.
07:42It's approximately 8.30 at night
07:45saying that a company had had a Takuchi TB216 stolen.
07:50It's a mini-excavator.
07:52We recovered quite a lot of these.
07:54It's one of two machines from our customer that have been stolen,
07:57but this is the only one with one of our trackers in.
08:00The diggers were rented out to what seemed a genuine company,
08:04but they've now disappeared.
08:07Other plant hire businesses have been hit by the same scam,
08:10with a total of five machines stolen worth around £100,000.
08:16Maybe we'll get all five of these machines.
08:19I'm hopeful we'll get the one with the tracker in.
08:23Back at base, Jackie's monitoring the tracker in the stolen digger.
08:27There's no live GPS.
08:30Something's blocking the signal.
08:32You've still got the red light, yeah?
08:34They're still not connecting the sand.
08:37But there is data coming from the tracker's SIM card,
08:42being picked up by a mobile phone mast.
08:44We've put the unit into alarm,
08:47and the Automatrix M-Track is reporting a cell site in Wales,
08:51just north of Carleth, Carphilly.
08:53The machine arrived in Wales at 11 o'clock last night.
08:58It's now 24 hours later.
09:00Richard's not far from the phone mast,
09:03but he still can't pinpoint the digger's exact position.
09:10We've been trying to get a GPS position
09:12by continually asking the tracking device to supply us with the GPS,
09:17but it can't get a fix from the satellite.
09:19So that's meaning that either the signal has not got access to the satellites
09:25by it being inside a building
09:27or maybe some signal jamming equipment might be in use.
09:32So we're unable to get an accurate location.
09:35So, you know, we've got to use the radio technology at the end of the day.
09:39A radio frequency, or RF signal, is accurate to within a few metres
09:47and is much more difficult to block.
09:51The trackers Richard uses transmit both GPS and RF signals.
09:57See, we've picked up the RF.
09:59It's not getting any louder, we'll turn back round again.
10:03The signal's leading him to an industrial estate.
10:06It looks like the thieves have already sold the diggers
10:10to an unsuspecting buyer.
10:13Richard's arranged to meet up with Steve from the plant hire company
10:16to help identify the diggers.
10:19So it definitely looks like a plant place here,
10:20so they might have bought it, mightn't they?
10:22Yeah.
10:23This isn't the right one, this is an attache.
10:27It's a swate, it's a whack-a-noosan.
10:31There's no sign of the stolen diggers.
10:33So Richard deploys his trusty handheld receiver.
10:38It's going to be in one of those two units, I think.
10:43I'm on a five now.
10:45Level one is the strongest reading, level nine the weakest.
10:48Level five.
10:52Level five, good.
10:54It's the same on both these doors.
10:56So I think they're the same unit.
10:58Yeah, they are.
11:00Nothing on this door at all.
11:02I think I've got a bit on this door.
11:04Yeah, definitely got a bit on here.
11:09Seems to be coming from underneath.
11:11It looks like these metal shutters have been blocking the tracker's GPS signal.
11:17Well, I think we've got one machine.
11:20Whether we've got them any more than that, I don't know.
11:23So we just need to get the police here now to get this open.
11:26Steve calls for police backup.
11:31Yeah, we've got some headlights.
11:32And they quickly respond.
11:34All right.
11:35Let's go in.
11:36All right.
11:37Where do we, where's this showing?
11:38See the one with the light on?
11:39Yeah.
11:40That's probably where the strongest signal is.
11:42The officers can't do anything until the morning.
11:45So we'll position a police car outside.
11:48But Richard is reluctant to leave the site.
11:51I've just come round the corner to a small hotel.
11:54And I'll park up and get some kip here in the hotel.
11:57It'll be a bit of a novelty.
11:58Normally I'll just kip in a cup.
11:59So, yeah, we'll have to come back in six hours' time
12:02and see how things go.
12:04Cracking.
12:09Later, will Richard finally find the two stolen diggers?
12:14OK.
12:15We're going in.
12:22In Birmingham, vehicle tracker Neil Thomas
12:25has located a Toyota Hilux
12:27which was stolen while its owner was watching a football match.
12:32Unbelievably, this is the second time this has happened
12:34to the Villa fan under the same circumstances.
12:37And it's the second time Neil has found his car again.
12:40That's where Aston Villa ground is.
12:43And that's where we are.
12:45So it hasn't been driven very far.
12:47You know, less than them all.
12:50Awaiting police backup,
12:51Neil's been watching the vehicle in case the thieves return.
12:55And now two individuals have appeared.
12:58Neil's worried that the thieves are back and calls the police.
13:01We've got a stolen vehicle from a tracking company.
13:04And somebody's just turned up at the stolen vehicle.
13:09Someone's turned up at the stolen vehicle?
13:11Yeah, somebody's looking at the vehicle.
13:14Thought it might be the thieves,
13:16but it may well be your officers, just bear with me.
13:18Upon closer inspection, Neil breathes a sigh of relief.
13:28I think it's your officers.
13:31OK.
13:35So you said you're with the vehicle?
13:38Yes, we are, yeah.
13:39That's it.
13:40But I think they're police officers,
13:41so we're going to speak to them.
13:43OK, thanks for your help.
13:44Thank you. Bye-bye.
13:45Bye-bye.
13:47Neil is keen to give the car the once-over
13:49and approaches the vehicle to assess any damage.
13:53Morning.
13:54You've got damaged wheel lock
13:56and then whoever's done it has gone in through the back
13:59and then he's...
14:01You can see the number plate's been taken off.
14:04Just ripped off.
14:09So the screws are still in there.
14:10The thieves gained entry through the back window
14:15and then tried to hunt for trackers,
14:18unsuccessfully this time.
14:22You know, they looked behind the dashboard.
14:24We don't know whether that's to compromise the ignition
14:26or whether it's to try and find any tracking devices.
14:30Probably a little bit of both.
14:32Probably a little bit of both.
14:34Yeah, it's going to be expensive to repair it.
14:37However, you know, the vehicle's back.
14:38That's the main thing.
14:40The recovery vehicle loads up the Hilux
14:43and a forensic examination
14:45will hopefully provide enough evidence
14:47to arrest the culprits.
14:49A really good job.
14:51Yeah, he's stolen yesterday.
14:53And obviously, you know, they've made an untidy search
14:56of the vehicle inside,
14:58trying to look for ways to compromise
15:00probably the ignition, first of all,
15:02and then potentially look for covert trackers
15:03which they haven't found.
15:04and the trackers given us the exact location.
15:07You know, it's a great job.
15:08We've got the car back.
15:09So another one to us.
15:16Although he's behind the wheel of another Hilux now,
15:19the driver, Luke Carter, was relieved to be reunited with his car.
15:24But discovering his vehicle had been stolen was a huge shock.
15:28I was at Villa Park, home of Aston Villa Football Club.
15:31I'm a season ticket holder there.
15:33Been to the game, returning to the vehicle to go home with a friend of mine.
15:37As we approached the parking space, it just wasn't there.
15:41And it was just that sinking feeling.
15:44The car's been taken.
15:46The game itself proved to be the ideal opportunity for the theft to take place.
15:54You've got 42,000 fans that are inside the stadium
15:58with all their cars parked outside.
16:00The thieves know that no one's returning to that vehicle
16:03while the match is in play.
16:05So it just gives them free reign.
16:07Hiluxes and 4x4 pickups in general do get stolen
16:11and shipped out abroad for parts.
16:14And I just didn't want my vehicle to be one of those.
16:17I had a phone conversation with the police to get the crime number.
16:20They asked me if there was any trackers on the vehicle,
16:22which I told them there was.
16:24And they gave them the details of the tracking company.
16:27And then when I woke up the next morning at 6am,
16:30it was a text message from the retrieval team saying
16:33there was with the vehicle and they'd got it back.
16:37The substantial damage the thieves inflicted on Luke's Toyota
16:42resulted in huge disruption for him.
16:46The vehicle's off the road for the best part of two months.
16:50Getting, obviously, the windows and all the dash repaired.
16:54It has a massive impact when it's off the road.
16:58I've got things to do, how am I going to do that?
17:00It's just an absolute nightmare.
17:01Back in South Wales, it's early morning.
17:11Morning.
17:13Richard's planning to snatch back at least one stolen digger.
17:16And maybe even two.
17:17Needless to say, this hotel was actually completely full last night.
17:21So I've just got my head down for a few hours in the car.
17:25Richard goes back to the industrial estate.
17:27No one's turned up yet. It's 20 to 6 in the morning.
17:31And that's good.
17:32That means we're going to be able to eyeball this unit opening
17:37and see the stolen machine inside with this stolen digger.
17:40Someone's just turned up, so we're going to have a look now.
17:46Two officers here.
17:50And they're talking to the first person who's turned up just after 6 o'clock.
17:56Okay.
17:58We're going in.
18:00Richard's finally inside the unit.
18:02So 831 is the one with the tracker in it.
18:06Oh, okay.
18:07Yeah.
18:09So that's that one.
18:10And the other one could be 884.
18:13It's a great result.
18:15He's found not one, but two stolen diggers.
18:21They're moved out into the open to be checked for damage.
18:25That's the stolen one without a tracker in.
18:27So we're lucky to get that one back.
18:30And then EXE 831, Excavator 831.
18:36And you can see the security Caesar number plate.
18:38It's been scratched out.
18:39I mean, you don't buy a machine if this number is,
18:43this security number has been tampered with.
18:45You know, why would you buy a machine with that like that?
18:48Obviously these have been sold to somebody who's going to lose a lot of money.
18:54Pickup transporters arrived.
18:55This is going to go with the police now.
18:58It's the quickest thing to do is to get these recovered away from this site as soon as possible.
19:03That's the second transporter.
19:05So we're going to have a bit of a convoy here, two transporters.
19:08We've got ourselves the convoy.
19:10A police investigation is now underway.
19:13And thanks to Richard, the net is closing in on the thieves behind this fraudulent hire scam.
19:19I think that job's gone like clockwork, to be honest.
19:21It wasn't too difficult to actually pick up the RF signal.
19:24I mean, sometimes it can be hours, but that was pretty quick.
19:28And then, of course, you know, in the morning the roller door opened and then we popped it.
19:33And those two machines were in there. That was fantastic.
19:35I couldn't believe it. I mean, I knew there'd be one in there, but to have both machines in there was top notch, really.
19:42Whether to beat congestion, save money or reduce pollution, more of us are using bicycles to get round.
19:59But in the UK, around 77,000 bikes are reported stolen every year.
20:04And London is a bike theft hotspot.
20:11Recovery specialists Backpedal retrieve stolen bikes for victims of theft by fitting them with GPS trackers.
20:19And one of their agents is Bilal Ali.
20:23I feel good about the job I do. I don't know if you've ever had your bike nicked, but it's one of the worst feelings.
20:27Today, Bilal has been notified by a client that one of their precious cargo bikes, worth around £3,000, has gone missing.
20:38A cargo bike is a bicycle designed to carry heavy loads, like parcels or groceries.
20:45Some, but not all, are electric.
20:48Using GPS technology, Bilal intends to track it down and take it back.
20:53These cargo bikes aren't easy to hide, and from the tracking, it almost looks as if it's in someone's back garden.
21:02So we might have a bit of a confrontation to do today.
21:06Just, you know, go knock on the door, hey listen, we can see the bike is in the back, just hand it over.
21:12The tracker is giving out an alert from a block of London flats.
21:17So Bilal parks his van and attempts to pinpoint the exact location.
21:24Hopefully it is just as simple as the tracker says.
21:28You can see it's just kind of left in the garden.
21:33Bilal's hopes for a simple solution are helped by the GPS tracker which provides him with an exact location of where the cargo bike could be.
21:41We've arrived at the GPS location, I'm getting a strong signal.
21:47I think it might be down over here.
21:50Let's come and have a look.
21:52The place is in it just over beyond this brick wall.
21:57And if I come and have a look...
22:00Yeah, I can see it there as well.
22:02You can see the cargo bike just over there.
22:07It's quite run down.
22:09There's different bits of rubbish laying around.
22:11Like I can't see the battery on the back.
22:13And it almost kind of looks as if they've started to help themselves already.
22:17Taking off bits.
22:25Yeah, almost looks as if there's like an opening over there, in the middle.
22:28Satisfied that the bike has been located, Bilal now attempts to gain access to the garden without disturbing any residents.
22:45We're going to take a look around, see if there's any other points of entry and hopefully we can gain access from there.
22:51The last resort is knocking on somebody's door and hopefully they can let us in.
22:55There's no way in, but Bilal can see which flat the bike is closest to.
23:11So his only option is to knock on the door.
23:13Hello?
23:14Hiya, could you come through the door, please?
23:15Hiya, you alright, bro?
23:16Hiya.
23:17Yeah, brother, you've got our bike in the back.
23:18What bike?
23:19The big cargo bike.
23:20Oh, sorry, I don't know who's that.
23:21Yeah.
23:22Do you have any way to get through there?
23:23Or do you mind just bringing it around through the back?
23:24Okay, hold on.
23:25Yeah, you know what I'm talking about?
23:26Yeah, the big black one.
23:27I'll have a look now.
23:28Yeah, have a look.
23:29It's the one with the big box, yeah?
23:30Okay, hold on.
23:31Okay, hold on.
23:32Hold on.
23:33Yeah, if someone should see you.
23:34Okay, hold on.
23:35Okay, hold on.
23:36Yeah, if someone should see you.
23:37Okay, I'll have a look.
23:38Yeah, I'm sorry.
23:39Yeah.
23:40I'm sorry, I don't know who's that.
23:41Yeah.
23:42Do you have any way to get through there?
23:43Um, do you mind just bringing it around through the back?
23:46Okay, hold on.
23:47Yeah, you know what I'm talking about?
23:48Yeah, the big black one.
23:49Can I have a look now?
23:50Yeah, have a look.
23:51It's the one with the big box, yeah?
23:52Okay, hold on.
23:53Yeah, have someone dropped that off this morning, mate?
24:03Who dropped it off?
24:04At what time?
24:05Um, by nine o'clock this morning.
24:06Nine o'clock this morning.
24:07Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:08Who was it?
24:09It was just a random geese, was it?
24:10Just some random guy, yeah.
24:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:12But the stolen goods, and they need to take it back to the company.
24:14That's the thing.
24:15No problem, mate.
24:16How am I going to get...
24:17How are you going to bring it?
24:18I'm going to get a few now.
24:19Yeah?
24:20Okay, that's fine.
24:21He said he's going to try to bring it round.
24:24Supposedly, he knows the code for the padlock.
24:27According to him, somebody bought it at nine o'clock this morning,
24:31which kind of matches the GPS timings.
24:35Trying to see if I can open it.
24:38With no evidence to suggest the resident is the bike thief,
24:41Bilal is careful not to make any accusations
24:44and is keen to keep the situation calm.
24:47It can go one of two ways, denial or aggression.
24:50or aggression.
24:51So, I don't want to get aggressive with him.
24:53I don't want him to get aggressive to me.
24:55The best thing to do is just kind of negotiate.
24:59The bike is too big to go through the flat,
25:03but the resident has lost the code to gain entry to the back garden.
25:07So, he attempts to open the padlock himself with a hacksaw.
25:21The last thing we want to do is come back.
25:24If we do go away and we come back,
25:27the tracker might be taken off and the bike might actually be moved.
25:30With no access code available and the padlock proving to be unbreakable,
25:40they resort to desperate measures.
25:43So, if we get the front over...
25:48Yeah.
25:49..then the rest should just go.
25:55And just let it go.
25:56Oh, yeah?
25:57No, no, just let it go.
25:58Just let it go, she'll be fine.
25:59Sure.
26:00Yeah, yeah.
26:04No, no, just let it go, just let it go.
26:06Perfect.
26:11This would not be Bilal's usual method,
26:14but he's determined to recover the bike today,
26:16as it could be gone by tomorrow.
26:21However, Bilal discovers there's one vital bit of equipment still missing.
26:26The battery.
26:28Yeah, that's fine.
26:29Thank you.
26:34Now success.
26:36Great success.
26:37We have the battery over here,
26:39and we have the actual cargo bike.
26:40Without the battery, the bike is really nothing.
26:42So, that was a great recovery.
26:44I'm very happy with that.
26:48Yeah, not too much damage all in all, to be honest.
26:52Bilal may think there's been very little damage,
26:55but he soon discovers a problem with connecting the battery.
26:58So, this is actually quite messed up.
27:06It should just easily slide in and out.
27:08I mean, you saw how much I was struggling.
27:10I pumped the brakes on the bike so it doesn't move.
27:12Normally, you would just be able to slide it in and out.
27:14In this instance, I think they're just going to have to replace the whole bracket over here.
27:24Although some damage has been caused by the thief disconnecting the battery,
27:27it's still been a successful recovery mission for Bilal.
27:31Now that we've located the bike, we've recovered it.
27:34The final check is just to check the GPS.
27:37We've checked it now.
27:38It places it in this alleyway,
27:39and I can confirm this was our bike that was nicked this morning.
27:43I feel like a million bucks.
27:45I feel proud of what I do.
27:46I feel good about what I do.
27:48Look at this bad boy.
27:49He's a beast.
27:50Bilal just needs to return it to the customer,
27:55who will be delighted to have the valuable bicycle back.
28:06Bit rough and ready, but we've got a day in the end.
28:09Successful recovery, and they're all good.
28:20And we'll see you next time.
28:24Bye.
