00:08at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France.

00:12I had to convince everybody else to go along with the idea.

00:15They'll be living on their savings for a year,

00:17and Jonathan will be a first-time stay-at-home dad.

00:22I can be prepping dinner, and they can be doing their homework.

00:28I am nervous about being the stay-at-home dad.

00:31I'm nervous, too.

00:45We live in Huntsville, Alabama.

00:47We experienced France as a family on vacation and just loved it.

00:53So we have two children, William and Caroline.

00:56William is 12, and Caroline is 10.

01:00You go for those corners, don't you?

01:02We have two dogs, Belle and Chevy.

01:05So I started out as a classroom teacher,

01:08and the opportunity presented itself to become an education specialist supporting NASA.

01:13So I am looking to pursue a master's in space studies.

01:18And the International Space University is in Strasbourg, France.

01:21I thought, this is perfect.

01:23It lets me pursue both of my dreams, which are space and living in France.

01:29Then I had to convince everybody else to go along with the idea.

01:33Yeah, so a lot of things to think through and process.

01:37We're going to live in this city.

01:38What do you think about this?

01:39This is something you wouldn't see all the time.

01:41I am a mortgage broker, so I'm taking a step back from my job.

01:45So it's going to be a complete flip of roles.

01:48And to be honest, I am nervous about being more of the stay-at-home dad.

01:54But I'm really excited about the opportunity to be with them much, much more.

01:59We will rely on our savings, which we had spent many years setting aside for who knows what.

02:05It was this.

02:06This is a lot.

02:07I know that Strasbourg is the capital of Europe.

02:10I know that it has a good bit of German influence because it is right on the border and has gone back and forth between French rule and German rule several times throughout history.

02:20It has that feeling of walking through history, architecture, just noticing people relaxing.

02:27Strasbourg is a green city.

02:29There's bikes everywhere to the point where it can be quite dangerous.

02:32It's in the heart of Europe.

02:35It's home to big international community.

02:38The Strasbourg rental market is a very buoyant market.

02:42And as an international renter, it can be quite difficult to find property.

02:46I would really love to be in the city centre because it's so different than what we've been experiencing before.

02:52It's so different from home.

02:53We want to be close to some activities for the kids.

02:56So there's four of you.

02:58How many bedrooms do you need?

03:00So we'd like three bedrooms.

03:01Okay.

03:02Yes.

03:03We're used to having our own bathroom, each of us.

03:05Oh, okay.

03:06So if we could find at least two.

03:09Okay.

03:10That might be a bit of a challenge here in Strasbourg, especially in these old buildings.

03:14I would love to have a balcony or outdoor something.

03:18And you've got the dogs, of course.

03:20Yes.

03:21We need something pet friendly and close to a park.

03:23So what style of property are we looking for?

03:26So I would love something that has a European traditional feel to it.

03:31Yeah.

03:32Yeah.

03:33And I love the look of the traditional, but I like more of a modern touch.

03:37The amenities.

03:38Yeah.

03:39The comforts that we're used to.

03:40We have come with suitcases and that's it.

03:42Okay.

03:43So something furnished would be ideal.

03:46And how much are you looking to spend?

03:48Yeah.

03:49We're looking to spend around $2,400 a month.

03:51They've got a decent budget, but it's going to be difficult to find them something with

03:55typical Strasbourg character in the city center with three bedrooms.

03:59I can tell you I have almost been run over by several bicycles.

04:04We're not used to the bike lanes.

04:07It takes some getting used to, doesn't it?

04:09I'm showing Amy and Jonathan this house because I think it would be a really practical option

04:13for them.

04:14It's recently renovated, a modern design, and it's fully furnished.

04:19You've got the best of both worlds with this location.

04:22It's a quiet residential area, but only eight minutes walk to the city center.

04:26Now the apartment we're going to look at is in this building here.

04:29It's on the sixth floor.

04:31Now there is an elevator.

04:32Now it's a three bedroom.

04:34Excellent.

04:35One bathroom.

06:00It's not a full-size fridge, but...

06:02I'm watching Jonathan look at the kitchen, look at the refrigerator, and that really makes

06:07me really happy that I can concentrate on school and just trust in him and trust that he's got

06:12it.

06:13Now, all three bedrooms are very much the same size.

06:17It's kind of a small bed.

06:19We're used to a really large bed, but I do see a desk here.

06:24Now, this is why I thought this could be your bedroom.

06:29That could really work.

06:30That way I could find a quiet spot, have a place to work at night when I need to

06:32finish some papers or finish some projects.

06:58So, at least we have a separate room for that.

07:02And then another person can come in and take a shower, brush their teeth while one person's

07:10I'm actually surprised at the reaction to this apartment.

07:13I thought they were really going to like it.

07:15It's got a great location.

07:16It's ready to go.

07:18Especially Jonathan, because it's got that modern feel that he requested.

07:21So, I think it's definitely doable.

07:24Um, the bedrooms, they can work.

07:26They're all...

07:27They're all right on top of each other.

07:29They're all clustered together.

07:31I mean, you know, yes, everybody gets their own space, but I can see us all kind of running

07:36into each other.

07:41What do you think about the bathroom?

07:42I mean, it works.

07:43You're not concerned about it at all?

07:45Yes, it could work, but I feel like we might all end up on top of each other and wanting

07:50a little bit more space.

07:51And to be in France, I really kind of wanted that European charm.

07:55It feels like you could find this decor really anywhere.

07:59To get Amy the charm she's after, Eleanor takes them to another place in the city.

08:23For the past decade, I've been working with the Human Exploration Rover Challenge with

08:27NASA.

08:28And now I am going to attend the International Space University.

08:31I am looking to pursue a master's in space studies in France.

08:36That's Delisette.

08:37She's the first cat in space.

08:39So it says she went up in 1963, and she is a French cat.

08:43We had to do a lot of convincing for the children.

08:47They were really nervous about it.

08:49They were really nervous.

08:50And there was a lot of waffling.

08:51But we thought, now's the time to do this.

08:53Our children are old enough to experience new things.

08:57And, of course, they're going to miss their friends back home.

09:01But they're also a bit excited about it, too.

09:03Do you know what this is?

09:07And it's hard as a parent, because when we are thinking about them and we are thinking

09:12about the future, they don't understand.

09:14They don't see that the hard gives them growth.

09:19Unbelievable.

09:20That is an experience that you can take with you for the rest of your life.

09:25Strasbourg has a fabulous international community.

09:29And I can see them settling in really well.

09:31I just need to find them the right property.

09:34So what were the kids' reaction when you told them that you were moving to France?

09:37Oh, goodness.

09:38Caroline's main thing was that she had to have her dogs come with her.

09:42Oh, so it was Caroline that insisted that the dogs come?

09:45Yes.

09:46So hopefully Caroline and William will like this neighborhood then,

09:49because we're only 15 minutes away from the city center.

09:52Okay, that's not bad.

09:53I'm really excited to show them this place, because Amy wants French charm.

09:57And here is French charm in a historical building.

10:01But it's only semi-furnished, so they would have to buy extra pieces.

10:05Now, the apartment I'm going to show you is in this building here.

10:11And it's up at $2,750 a month.

10:39It could keep me away from the family for a while.

10:41With the price being $350 more than I planned for, and I'm not working, that's a concern.

11:16It is really beautiful.

11:17That has a lot of character to it, and it really reminds me that this is an old building.

11:23When I go into an apartment that has this French feel to it, it's like the dreams of myself as a little girl are possibly coming true.

11:32Now, you have a separate dining room.

11:34Once again, a really big space.

11:38I do like that it kind of has a separate, it's separated from everything else.

11:43Then we have one bedroom here.

11:45One of the kids' bedrooms.

11:50Caroline likes to be a little cozier, so I think that this one might work better for her.

11:54There's two bathrooms, one with a bath, one with a shower.

11:58Okay.

11:59But there's only one with a toilet.

12:03So still only one toilet.

12:04Yes.

12:05But it's at least in the other bathroom.

12:08But we have two sinks here.

12:09Yeah, that's nice.

12:11They can be getting ready here while one's in the bathroom.

12:15Now the kitchen is fully equipped, so you don't actually have to buy anything in the kitchen.

12:21So you've got a dishwasher, washing machine, oven, cooker.

12:24And I think they've done a good job of working with it.

12:30It has a lot of charm.

12:32I really like the feel that it has with the crown molding.

12:36The really high ceilings and the view.

12:41I'm not sure I would ever get over it.

12:43It's actually quite a bit of space.

12:46A lot to furnish.

12:49Which means extra expense.

12:51We're already spending more than we wanted to.

12:54And about the 45 minute commute to university.

12:58So to get a better price and a shorter commute, Eleanor takes them to the suburbs.

13:20That's from Italy, from Spain.

13:22This move is a good opportunity to kind of take on more as a stay at home dad.

13:29I want to pour in more time and effort and energy into the kids.

13:34I've worked so incredibly hard in my career that I feel that I've sacrificed some things

13:41in our family life.

13:43It's really great people watching.

13:45Yeah, when the kids learned that I'm going to be the main parent staying home, they said,

13:52uh, are you sure you want to do that?

13:54I'm nervous too.

13:57I'm going to take this little guy.

13:58Okay.

13:59But we talked about it and decided that that could be a really good opportunity for growth

14:04in a different way.

14:05Growth with our family and just growth as a person in general to develop some different strengths.

14:12At first, I thought this was a massive change for Amy going back to school and at a French

14:17university.

14:18But I'm now realizing that it's actually a bigger change for Jonathan.

14:21He's going to be responsible for caring for the kids, putting them into French school.

14:26That's the bit that's actually quite nerve-wracking.

14:28So I brought you to the suburbs of Strasbourg, which is slightly south of the city.

14:34Okay.

14:35It's called Ilkisch-Grassenstad.

14:37This is a really popular neighborhood because it offers affordable housing and good quality

14:41of life.

14:43There's loads of lovely parks.

14:45Now, I appreciate it's a 45-minute commute into the city center.

14:48And I think the key thing here is the fact it's 10 minutes from the university, so they

14:52can spend more time together as a family on this adventure.

14:55Now, the property is here.

14:57It's a three-bedroom, one-bathroom, but with a separate toilet.

15:02It's fully furnished.

15:03There's not much of a...

15:05Not much curb appeal.

15:06No, it doesn't look very French.

15:08But it's only $1,700 a month.

15:11Oh, I like that.

15:12I knew you would.

15:13It's definitely different than the city feel in general.

15:16I feel safe where you could just say, hey, kids, go out and walk around.

15:21And not have to worry about it.

15:27I didn't envision the comfort that this would exude just from looking at the outside.

17:38I'm pleasantly surprised that their enthusiasm as we're walking around this house, in fact,

17:43it's them leading the tour.

17:45It is completely different than what I would expect.

17:52It's not very exciting to look at.

17:54But then the inside is surprisingly comfortable.

17:57Yeah, it makes up for the outside.

17:59Yeah, it just surprised me.

18:02But the big selling points here are the price.

18:10Having something completely different could be very nice.

18:13So it's important that we find a space that is convenient for Amy and her school.

18:19But I think that it's pretty important that we find a space that's good for you and the

18:25kids during the day.

18:28But is it worth 45 minutes each way?

18:31But also, it's completely different.

18:36Oh, my gosh.

18:38These are huge.

18:39That's the first time I have seen a bird like that in real life.

18:42I think they'd be better off choosing something maybe slightly closer to the university that

18:47will be fully equipped, ready to move in, and less than what they're looking to spend.

18:52What is the one that you think we could live without?

19:01It doesn't give the feel that I'm looking for.

19:04I think we have better options.

19:05If we're going to give up the charm and the feel, we would at least want some more space

19:40The commute, that saves a lot of time, which means you can spend more time with us.

19:45It doesn't have that French charm you're looking for on the inside.

19:50But what would you do all day?

20:49The kids weren't used to me being the one that's around most of the time.

20:54They've had to sort of develop that trust of daddy's got this.

21:00Look who I found as I came in.

21:01The commute has been pretty long on days, but honestly, it's not that bad.

21:05And my space bubble has definitely been a fun one.

21:08I've been learning a lot about some aspects of space that I'm not as familiar with.

21:14I don't have any regrets for bringing us all over here in pursuit of my dream.

21:23Because the growth and the change that I've seen has been completely worth it.
