00:00:0054 pounds against veteran French titleist Laurent Boudouane.
00:00:04And as we wait to bring the fighters into the ring for that one,
00:00:06let's look ahead now to the big heavyweight unification battle next week in Madison Square Garden
00:00:11between Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis.
00:00:16When Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis step into the ring next week at Madison Square Garden,
00:00:21the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Riddick Bowe in 1992 should be crowned.
00:00:26This is my main fight. The fight I've been waiting for is finally here.
00:00:30And I'm going to shock the world, show the world who the best heavyweight on the planet is.
00:00:34I'm a winner. I was born to win.
00:00:38And it's not for me now at 36 years old thinking of anything else but the winner that I am.
00:00:47Evander Holyfield will go down in boxing history as one of the sport's most devoted warriors.
00:00:52No contemporary heavyweight has fought and defeated more formidable opponents.
00:00:58His revenge victory in his second fight with Riddick Bowe showed the world Holyfield's unparalleled resiliency and determination.
00:01:05Holyfield gunning for a stoppage here.
00:01:08It would suck the world.
00:01:09Have a tremendous rally by former champion Evander Holyfield.
00:01:14Look at all the people that have fought that you call big and all of them had huge left hand and huge right hand.
00:01:21You know, they had the same thing that Lennox had.
00:01:25Didn't have no problem with them either because, you know what, it didn't make a difference.
00:01:29And I will have what it takes and what I have will be more than what Lennox has.
00:01:34Evander's resume of impressive victories also includes his 8th round stoppage of Michael Moorer in 1997, avenging another earlier title loss.
00:01:44And after having ended the myth of Mike Tyson, the only remaining question in Holyfield's certain Hall of Fame career is Lennox Lewis.
00:01:51This was my goal, to become a heavyweight champion of the world.
00:01:58You know, I realized that, you know, once you're a heavyweight champion of the world, that means you're the best fighter on the planet.
00:02:04So, you know, that was definitely an aspiration of mine.
00:02:08Aside from Lewis' second round TKO loss to Oliver McCall in 1994, he has shown that he performs best in his toughest fights.
00:02:15As evidenced in his dominating performances versus Razorada, Tommy Morrison, and Andrew Gulotta, when he sent clear messages to the boxing world.
00:02:25That's it! That's it!
00:02:27The big statement by Lennox Lewis!
00:02:31And like Holyfield, Lewis has proven himself a warrior in tough circumstances.
00:02:36When seemingly on the verge of defeat, he has been able to come up with the big punch to turn fights around,
00:02:41and to finish his opponent with his matchless power.
00:02:45All right, left hand by Briggs, Lewis is hurt, and he comes back with his own left-up.
00:02:53When I win this fight, I'm going to show the world that I'm the best heavyweight of this era.
00:03:00I'm going to show the world that, you know, Evander Holyfield is being documented for a reason.
00:03:05Everybody is being documented for a reason.
00:03:08He thinks he's better to be. I know I'm better than him, though.
00:03:11But still, they've got to be proven on the 13th.
00:03:14When Lennox shows up, he's already in trouble.
00:03:17March 13th, Madison Square Garden in New York City.
00:03:20Evander Holyfield versus Lennox Lewis for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world.
00:03:24What each fighter has accomplished in the past won't matter.
00:03:27This night, we'll identify the current chapter in heavyweight boxing history.
00:03:31Well, Big George Foreman, you fought a pitched battle against Evander Holyfield in the big room of this building about eight years ago.
00:03:39You've covered all of Lennox Lewis' biggest fights.
00:03:42How do you see this one?
00:03:43You know what?
00:03:43Lennox Lewis has the reach, he has the power, and he has the weight.
00:03:47Evander Holyfield, he's got the heart.
00:03:50The heart and the heart.
00:03:51It's an evenly, they're evenly matched, and it's seldom seen when you see a world title match evenly matched.
00:03:57I like both of them.
00:03:58Sounds like you're pretty excited, huh?
00:03:59Very excited.
00:04:01All right, George.
00:04:02Well, we'll look ahead to that one once again.
00:04:04It's one week from tonight, live via pay-per-view on TVKO from Madison Square Garden.
00:04:09Incidentally, you heard Harold Letterman talk about the possible brewing controversy from the last fight between Savarese and Whitaker.
00:04:16The question of whether Lou Savarese got up in time from the sixth-round knockdown.
00:04:21Let's take a look back at the knockdown now, and you make your own judgment as to whether Savarese beats the count of ten.
00:04:27Four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, nine.
00:04:45All right, big loose.
00:04:46Nice try.
00:04:48Make your own judgment.
00:04:49From my personal perspective, it looks abundantly clear to me that Savarese beat the count getting up well before the referee could have said ten.
00:04:57Yeah, we did hear the referee say, come on.
00:04:59Yep.
00:05:00That's not allowed.
00:05:01Yeah, you know, you often hear referees coaching fighters, and they shouldn't be doing that, do they?
00:05:06No, they said, come on.
00:05:07Uh-huh.
00:05:07Now, I would be in the ring if I was a manager fighting about that.
00:05:10Well, and surely we'll hear more about it from Whitaker's people.
00:05:13Larry, let's turn our attention now to the main event of the evening, David Reed fighting for a world championship.
00:05:17And Reed is a surprisingly prohibited favorite in the fight when you look at Buduani's career and everything he's accomplished.
00:05:23Is that the cause of the smashing successes of Vargas and Mayweather Jr. when they were in this same situation last year?
00:05:30Or is there something else at play?
00:05:32Both, I think, Jim.
00:05:34I think that most people think right now that it's David Reed's turn to win a title.
00:05:40No, because he is an American, because he has won a gold medal, because he is a Philadelphia fighter, and because he's a natural puncher.
00:05:50It's in his DNA to win a title.
00:05:53And it's not supposed to be in the DNA of Buduani, who is the champion, after all, reason being that he is from France.
00:06:04And the last time we saw a fighter from France, he was devoured in one gulp, like a French cookie, by Oscar De La Hoya.
00:06:14So, we have a reason to be a little skeptical of fighters from France, but this one won a silver medal in the Olympics.
00:06:21This one hasn't been defeated in five years.
00:06:23And this one is regarded by French journalists I spoke to as perhaps the best French fighter since Marcel Sardin, the middleweight champion and hero of France after World War II.
00:06:37If David Reed can beat this solid gem, it will be an achievement.
00:06:43It's not an easy fight, despite the odds.
00:06:46So, let's take a look now at the tale of the tape in this 154-pound world championship fight.
00:06:51You see the seven-year age difference.
00:06:53Buduani won a silver medal in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, losing in the final to Robert Wangila of Nigeria.
00:07:01Height equal, reach, four-inch advantage to Buduani.
00:07:05They weighed in with Buduani weighing in a couple pounds under the limit.
00:07:09Each has gained 10 pounds since that time.
00:07:12Punch that numbers, Larry.
00:07:15Well, we can see here that Reed is a little bit more active.
00:07:18Buduani does fight like a counterpuncher often, but he will attack when the opportunity is there.
00:07:26Reed is more of the jabber, uses the jab to set up everything else, especially that right hand.
00:07:33And rules with the fight judge and pharmacist, Harold Letterman.
00:07:37The Laurent Buduani-David Reed fight is scheduled for 12 rounds using the unified rules at the Association of Boxing Commissions,
00:07:44which, incidentally, were agreed to right here in Atlantic City, thanks to commissioners Larry Hazard and Greg Serb.
00:07:49Buduani and Reed are both knockout punches, Jim.
00:07:52If a fighter gets knocked down, he has to take an eight count.
00:07:54That's a mandatory eight.
00:07:56He's got to take eight.
00:07:57If he gets up sooner, he still has to take eight.
00:07:59A lot of people mix it up with a standing eight.
00:08:01There is no standing eight count.
00:08:03Back to you, Jim.
00:08:04All right, Harold.
00:08:08And David Reed, as the challenger tonight, will be the first to enter the ring.
00:08:14Reed, of course, is from just up the road in Philadelphia, so this amounts to a home court for him.
00:08:19And we're going to be the first to enter the ring.
00:08:49And the record for Reed, 11-0.
00:09:19Seven KOs against a group of opponents who so far have an 85% winning percentage.
00:09:29And as we suggested earlier, maybe no Olympic prospect ever with the buildup that Reed enjoys
00:09:35has fought against a tougher selection of opponents in his first dozen fights than has been the case for him.
00:09:41Al Mitchell, who was one of his coaches on the 1996 Olympic team, has trained David Reed ever since he went into a gym in Philly at age 11.
00:09:54And here's a look at the champion from France.
00:10:01He is of Algerian heritage.
00:10:04Grew up in the French Alps.
00:10:06And Algeria has provided a number of fighters for France, including Marcel Cerdin, who I mentioned earlier.
00:10:18And we'll keep on fighting to the end.
00:10:24And there's a lot of fighters for France.
00:10:26Posthumous tribute to Freddie Mercury.
00:10:27Thirty-eight wins, two losses, and a draw.
00:10:30Thirty-two KOs.
00:10:32Four 0-1 in title fights.
00:10:34He has two wins over the fighter who last month seized a 154-pound title from American fighter Keith Mullings.
00:10:42And now let's go up to ring announcer Michael Buffer for the official introductions.
00:10:47Ladies and gentlemen, by way of Bally's Park Place, Atlantic City, welcome to Atlantic City's Convention Hall,
00:10:54where tonight America presents, along with your undisputed, undefeated King of Bears, Budweiser.
00:11:01This Buds for you is proud to bring you, in association with A.B. Stars, 12 rounds of boxing for the W.B.A. Junior Middleweight Championship of the World.
00:11:16Sanctioned by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board Boxing Commissioner Larry Hazard, Sr.
00:11:22Chairman Jerry Gormley, board members Gary Shaw and Stephen Katz, Deputy Commissioner John Kreko.
00:11:29Physicians at ringside are Dr. Dominic Coletta, Jr., Dr. Richard Sneppar, Dr. Louis Sabatini, and Dr. Jordan Garrison.
00:11:37Your timekeeper at the bell is Arthur Spell.
00:11:41World Boxing Association President, Gilberto Mendoza, Supervisor at ringside, Carlos Chavez.
00:11:48The three judges in attendance scoring this bout on a 10-point must system tonight will be
00:11:53Alejandro Roisin de Mexico, John Stewart from the United States, and Fernando Avizo from Venezuela.
00:12:03And when the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action, Randy Newman.
00:12:09And now, ladies and gentlemen, from Bally's Park Place, Atlantic City, New Jersey,
00:12:15let's get ready to rumble!
00:12:25Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing black, trimmed with red and white,
00:12:32he weighs 154 pounds, and since capturing Olympic gold in 1996,
00:12:37he has a perfect professional record of 11 straight victories in as many bouts,
00:12:43including seven by knockout.
00:12:45Ladies and gentlemen, here is the challenger, the number eight ranked WBA junior middleweight
00:12:52in the world, the pride of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
00:12:57the American Dream, David Reed!
00:13:01And across the ring, fighting out of the red corner, wearing white, blue, and red,
00:13:13he weighs 152 pounds, and brings an outstanding professional record to this ring.
00:13:1938 victories with 32 knockouts, only two losses and one draw.
00:13:25He has held the title since 1996, and tonight makes his fifth defense.
00:13:30Ladies and gentlemen, mesdames et messieurs, from Solange, France,
00:13:36presenting the reigning and defending WBA junior middleweight champion of the world,
00:13:43Laurent Boudouane!
00:13:47Hey, gentlemen, you're both familiar with the rules that they've been gone over.
00:14:01I want you to remember two things.
00:14:03Obey my commands, and number one, defend yourselves at all times.
00:14:07Good luck.
00:14:08Shake hands and come out of the belt.
00:14:09David Reed says that this will be like fighting for the gold medal again.
00:14:22When he fought for the gold medal, he was headed toward a decision loss in the third round
00:14:30against the veteran Alfredo Duvrahel of Cuba,
00:14:32when he suddenly launched the right herd around the world,
00:14:36a perfect right-hand shot that dropped Duvrahel into a stupor on the canvas
00:14:41and gave the USA its only gold medal of the 1996 Games in boxing.
00:14:47Remember, there was only one gold medalist on the 1992 American Olympic boxing team as well,
00:14:53a fellow named De La Hoya.
00:14:54David Reed is a good boxer.
00:15:03He's more effective when he can make the guy come to him.
00:15:06So he's going to be trying to make the champion follow him a bit.
00:15:10He has power, but is not going follow.
00:15:14If David Reed doesn't set a fast pace,
00:15:18and he's often tactical rather than furious in the first couple of rounds,
00:15:23he sort of plays into Boudouani's hands.
00:15:25Boudouani is a 50-punch-around guy who likes to get a look at his opponent,
00:15:31measure him, and try to set himself for power shots.
00:15:35Boudouani has got to go out there and show this guy,
00:15:38look, I'm the champion.
00:15:39He's not going to just walk over me.
00:15:41I've got something other than a reputation or a title belt.
00:15:45I can fight.
00:15:46You've got to establish that early with a young contender like this.
00:15:49Reed is very dynamic.
00:15:58He's always moving something.
00:15:59Feet, hip, stomach, or something.
00:16:09It's interesting how much Reed's left eye droops
00:16:12when you see him here in the ring,
00:16:14because when you see him in daylight, it isn't drooping.
00:16:17According to his trainer, Al Mitchell,
00:16:19the light and the heat make his eyelid droop.
00:16:24Well, of course, the beginning of his professional career
00:16:26was delayed as he had surgery on that eyelid.
00:16:30But apparently, no surgery will completely limit
00:16:34the effect of the drooping central.
00:16:37Boudouani was able to land the first good right hand.
00:16:39That established, hey, I can punch.
00:16:44And one of the things that Al Mitchell, Reed's trainer,
00:16:47said admiringly about Boudouani is,
00:16:50he's a good counterpuncher.
00:16:52He will counter David's good shots.
00:16:58David Reed does not allow you to set up,
00:17:01think about what you're going to do.
00:17:02You think about one thing, he moves in another direction
00:17:04and makes you have to think of another thing.
00:17:05Good left hook by Reed.
00:17:13Difference in hand speed obvious early
00:17:16as Boudouani gets off one punch at a time
00:17:19and Reed is able to fire combinations.
00:17:23Boudouani seems to be thinking as a puncher,
00:17:25waiting on one shot, and he did it.
00:17:27Good right hand, that hurt.
00:17:29Excellent right hand shot by Boudouani
00:17:32and you saw Reed smiling.
00:17:33That hurt, sure indicated.
00:17:36Yeah, he wasn't laughing.
00:17:38He was smiling that I got that one.
00:17:41I caught that one.
00:17:48Breathe, breathe.
00:17:49You have to work one, two, three.
00:18:03That's good.
00:18:04Just keep on.
00:18:07You're waiting a little too much
00:18:08when you don't have to wait.
00:18:09These close rounds like this,
00:18:11these are the ones we need to win.
00:18:12Remember when we watched the tape?
00:18:13Yeah.
00:18:13He boxed only when he won.
00:18:15You've got to win.
00:18:16Here you see Reed walking out moments ago
00:18:19and you see his left eye is not as wide open
00:18:22as his right eye,
00:18:23but it's not as noticeable as it is now.
00:18:26Right now, it almost appears that
00:18:29his left eye is at half mast
00:18:31or his left eyelid.
00:18:33We expected David Reed to be the busier
00:18:38of the two fighters in round one
00:18:40by CompuBox numbers.
00:18:41He threw 58 punches.
00:18:42Boudouani only threw 30,
00:18:44but Boudouani landed just as many
00:18:46and landed the harder shots,
00:18:48eight of 12 power shots.
00:18:51Boudouani is smart.
00:18:52He goes out there and attacks three shots
00:18:53and then steps back
00:18:55to come and get me, youngster.
00:18:56He likes to attack you
00:19:00and then take a walk.
00:19:01Which is what you want.
00:19:03David Reed is like a sniper,
00:19:04like a snake.
00:19:05He sticks a left jab in
00:19:07and gets right out of the way.
00:19:14Who's one that's seen to be interested
00:19:16in a right hand?
00:19:17I'm going to catch you.
00:19:22He's definitely looking for Reed
00:19:24to do all the leading.
00:19:26If you want to be champion,
00:19:29you're going to have to lead.
00:19:30Can't sit back and say,
00:19:31I'm going to take a man's championship
00:19:33counterpunch all night.
00:19:37And remember,
00:19:37despite all the hoopla
00:19:38surrounding Reed,
00:19:39it is Boudouani in the white trunks
00:19:41who holds a world title
00:19:43coming into this fight.
00:19:45Whacking him twice
00:19:46with the right hand.
00:19:47Reed drops his hands
00:19:48as if to say,
00:19:49you ain't got nothing.
00:19:51Well, let me tell you,
00:19:52he did have something.
00:19:53Those punches hurt.
00:19:56Reed working the right hand
00:20:00to the body.
00:20:01Very smart about getting in
00:20:02those body shots early on
00:20:03in the fight.
00:20:05It's very apparent
00:20:12that Boudouani does not want
00:20:14to get hit by the right hand.
00:20:16He's really trying to neutralize
00:20:17Reed's right hand
00:20:18and making him beat him
00:20:20some other way.
00:20:22Oh, another overhand right
00:20:23by Boudouani.
00:20:24That one came from
00:20:25an unusual angle
00:20:27and Reed didn't respond well to it.
00:20:29It landed flush on the jaw.
00:20:31Well, as soon as Reed stops
00:20:32moving just a little bit,
00:20:34the champion takes off on him.
00:20:36He can't be still.
00:20:41Hard right hand body shot
00:20:42by Reed.
00:20:43Boudouani landing
00:20:44with the right upstairs as well.
00:20:49The other challenger
00:20:50is trying to pick the fight.
00:20:51Right hand body shot
00:20:52Let him go.
00:21:07Step back.
00:21:08Step back.
00:21:08Boudouani is very defensive-minded.
00:21:16Throws a right hand occasionally
00:21:18just to make the youngster
00:21:19think about it.
00:21:20I have a right hand too.
00:21:22Well, he's got a style
00:21:23that just sort of naturally
00:21:24slows the pace of the fight.
00:21:26He's going to make you fight
00:21:27at his work rate.
00:21:31There's a good straight left hand
00:21:33by David Reed.
00:21:34Stopped Boudouani
00:21:35as Boudouani was trying
00:21:36to come in and attack.
00:21:37And as we go
00:21:39to Boudouani's corner
00:21:39between rounds,
00:21:41our French interpreter
00:21:42is Thierry Courjean.
00:21:51Okay, Laurent.
00:21:52Laurent, you have to move.
00:21:53Don't wait for him.
00:21:55Are you okay?
00:21:59Can I have water, please?
00:22:00I know you're looking for the shot,
00:22:11but forget about that.
00:22:12Keep the jab working.
00:22:13Score with the jab.
00:22:15One, twos, and threes,
00:22:16and step around.
00:22:17We just want to build up a lead.
00:22:18Then he'll come out of there.
00:22:19Okay?
00:22:20How you feel?
00:22:20I'm doing good.
00:22:21Okay, you're doing good.
00:22:21You're smarter than him.
00:22:24He's a veteran,
00:22:25but you're a little smarter than him,
00:22:26and you've got a little more speed.
00:22:27Okay?
00:22:28All right.
00:22:28Al Mitchell telling Reid,
00:22:38stop looking for the one big punch.
00:22:40Just fight him.
00:22:42Build up a lead.
00:22:43And then he'll have to come to you,
00:22:45and then you can try to nail him.
00:22:47So far in the first two rounds,
00:22:50CompuBox punch trackers
00:22:52have Buduani landing
00:22:53at the much higher rate.
00:22:55Reid had trouble finding Buduani
00:22:57in the second round.
00:22:58Now David steps forward
00:22:59behind the jab
00:23:00and doubles it up.
00:23:01Now, his corner told him right,
00:23:03build up a big lead,
00:23:04and then go after the bigger shots.
00:23:06I like that.
00:23:06It's seldom you hear
00:23:07a corner tell a guy,
00:23:09build up your lead.
00:23:11And that's what Reid corner told him.
00:23:13Go build up your Reid.
00:23:15Right.
00:23:15Step back.
00:23:16Step back.
00:23:16Now Reid seems to be
00:23:17beginning to solve
00:23:19the Buduani puzzle
00:23:20just a little bit
00:23:20as he starts to fire
00:23:22and land the jab
00:23:23with much greater frequency
00:23:25than any time
00:23:26in the first two rounds.
00:23:28The champion, Buduani,
00:23:29is a very solid fighter.
00:23:31Keeps his defense
00:23:31no matter what you do to him.
00:23:33Keeps his hands in position.
00:23:42Reid is measuring a jab.
00:23:44Very good jab.
00:23:46Much more effective
00:23:47in this round
00:23:47as he throws his jab
00:23:49with greater frequency.
00:23:50Missed with the right hand.
00:23:51Kind of chuckled about it.
00:24:01Buduani's got the look
00:24:02of a guy
00:24:02who would be a body puncher,
00:24:03but he doesn't fire
00:24:04to the body all that often.
00:24:05Yeah, he likes to do
00:24:06everything around
00:24:07the shoulder length.
00:24:08Nice shoulder.
00:24:09Everything is going to come
00:24:10from that shoulder.
00:24:11And you saw the counter left hand
00:24:13that landed
00:24:13and sort of snapped Reid's head
00:24:14back a little bit.
00:24:22Reid has been consistent
00:24:23with these right hands
00:24:24to the body.
00:24:27A lead and follow
00:24:28counter fire.
00:24:29David Reid trying to
00:24:31step forward
00:24:32and take the lead.
00:24:32Buduani working off
00:24:34of what Reid does
00:24:35and effectively so,
00:24:36so far.
00:24:40Whenever Buduani leads
00:24:42with the right hand,
00:24:42he does well.
00:24:47Reid just missing
00:24:48with the right hand
00:24:49over the top
00:24:49of Buduani's head.
00:24:53Guy dropped his hand.
00:24:54That means you should
00:24:55go get him.
00:24:57And Buduani pounding away
00:24:58with those right hand leads.
00:25:00As George told you,
00:25:01he's been able to land
00:25:02over the top of Reid's left.
00:25:04Never seems to miss
00:25:06when he does.
00:25:08Ooh, good right hand
00:25:09by Reid.
00:25:10Outstanding.
00:25:14So Buduani
00:25:15tastes the power
00:25:16in the Reid right cross
00:25:17for the first time.
00:25:20Buduani landing a left
00:25:21as Reid steps in.
00:25:23That right hand
00:25:24of Buduani again.
00:25:27And Reid going back
00:25:28to the body with the right
00:25:29as he's done so frequently
00:25:30early on.
00:25:31What you want to,
00:25:32what you want to do
00:25:34is land those right hands
00:25:35to the body
00:25:35and make this fella
00:25:36drop his left hand
00:25:37a little bit.
00:25:37Let's take a look
00:25:38at some upcoming
00:25:39sports programs
00:25:40on HBO.
00:25:42Boxing After Dark
00:25:43returns later this month
00:25:44with a heavyweight
00:25:45doubleheader.
00:25:46Aiki Bayabuchi,
00:25:46best known for his
00:25:47thrilling decision
00:25:48over David Tua,
00:25:49takes on another
00:25:49excellent fighter,
00:25:50Chris Bird.
00:25:51Also, Canadian
00:25:52Kirk Johnson
00:25:53and Al Ice-Cole
00:25:54fight a rematch
00:25:55of their Rock'em Sock'em
00:25:56majority draw
00:25:57from December.
00:25:58April's Boxing After Dark
00:25:59showcases Ivan Robinson
00:26:01coming off his second
00:26:02victory over Arturo
00:26:03Gatti,
00:26:03he now faces
00:26:04Angel Manfredi
00:26:05who's moving up
00:26:06five pounds
00:26:06to 135.
00:26:08Also, Floyd Mayweather,
00:26:09conqueror of Manfredi,
00:26:10defends his 130-pound
00:26:12crown against veteran
00:26:13Goya Vargas
00:26:13in another championship
00:26:15fight.
00:26:16And two days from now,
00:26:17HBO presents the next
00:26:18edition of Sports
00:26:19of the 20th Century,
00:26:20Dare to Compete,
00:26:21The Struggle of Women
00:26:21in Sports.
00:26:22This historical documentary
00:26:24chronicles the history
00:26:25of women in sports
00:26:25depicting how the
00:26:27suffrage movement,
00:26:28the 60s,
00:26:28and Title IX
00:26:29helped set the stage
00:26:30for today's
00:26:31women athletes.
00:26:32That's Monday,
00:26:33right here on HBO.
00:26:37After the heavyweight
00:26:39fight,
00:26:40this one seems a little
00:26:42timid and tactical
00:26:43so far.
00:26:45The heavyweight battle,
00:26:47if you missed it,
00:26:48was all-out warfare
00:26:49between Lou Savarese
00:26:50and Lance Mount-Whitaker
00:26:52culminating in a split
00:26:54decision for Savarese.
00:27:04David Reed decides
00:27:06to double jab.
00:27:07He never loses
00:27:07his balance.
00:27:09Steps and slide.
00:27:10Budwani shows enough
00:27:16respect in the early
00:27:17going for Reed's
00:27:18speed and punching
00:27:19power that by CompuBox
00:27:22numbers, he's been
00:27:22throwing only 27 punches
00:27:24a round, landing at a
00:27:25higher rate than Reed.
00:27:27But you wonder how many
00:27:28rounds he can win on
00:27:29the scorecards when Reed
00:27:30throws so many more
00:27:31punches.
00:27:33Now he's got him
00:27:33moving.
00:27:34You've got to keep him
00:27:35moving.
00:27:35Reed has got him
00:27:36off-balance,
00:27:37kind of find his
00:27:38footwork, going to the
00:27:39body, that's what you
00:27:40want to do.
00:27:40Keep it going like
00:27:41that all night.
00:27:42Making your opponent
00:27:43try to set up and
00:27:44restart things.
00:27:46And Reed keeps going
00:27:47to the body with
00:27:47the right hand,
00:27:48trying to bring
00:27:49Budwani's left down.
00:27:50That's what he's done.
00:27:51He's thrown the right
00:27:52hand to the body
00:27:53over and over.
00:27:54Sooner or later,
00:27:54it starts to hurt,
00:27:55and Budwani starts
00:27:57dropping his hand
00:27:58more to protect
00:27:58his side.
00:27:59And that would make
00:28:00the opening for Reed's
00:28:01right cross, which is
00:28:02his thunder punch.
00:28:03That's what he's
00:28:04trying to do, and
00:28:04it's odd to see a guy
00:28:06with so few fights
00:28:07think like that.
00:28:08Floyd Patterson
00:28:09could think like
00:28:10that.
00:28:13Also an Olympian.
00:28:14I started to say,
00:28:15another Olympic gold
00:28:15medalist.
00:28:19Good left hook by
00:28:21Reed.
00:28:22I think it's still a
00:28:23little early for Reed
00:28:24to try to power stuff
00:28:25right now.
00:28:30Now he's staying in a
00:28:31pocket, Reed Hill,
00:28:32so every time his
00:28:33opponent throws a fight,
00:28:35a punch, he stays right
00:28:36there with his hands
00:28:37in position.
00:28:38And Reed snapped
00:28:39Budwani with an
00:28:40uppercut.
00:28:41The Frenchman in this
00:28:42round has been limited
00:28:43to throwing one punch
00:28:45at a time, as he seems
00:28:46to exhibit greater and
00:28:48greater respect for
00:28:49David Reed's punching
00:28:50power.
00:28:51Watch Reed.
00:28:52Whenever there are some
00:28:52punches thrown, his
00:28:53hands are covered up,
00:28:54covering him up very
00:28:55good.
00:28:56He doesn't jump out of
00:28:57the weight.
00:28:58Reed, one more on the
00:29:00attack.
00:29:02And Budwani retaliating
00:29:04but with one punch at a
00:29:06time.
00:29:07Now there's some good
00:29:08combinations about
00:29:09Budwani.
00:29:09Now he goes back to
00:29:10combination punching,
00:29:11the left of the body,
00:29:12the right upstairs.
00:29:13Good right hand again,
00:29:27Budwani.
00:29:28He was slugging
00:29:29a little right hand.
00:29:31He decoys you into
00:29:32position where he can
00:29:33attack you with that
00:29:34right hand, and he's
00:29:35landed three of them
00:29:36in a row.
00:29:39David Reed's mouthpiece
00:29:41dropped to the canvas
00:29:42during that round.
00:29:43It wasn't a good idea,
00:29:44son.
00:29:47Reed is doing a lot of
00:29:48talking during the...
00:29:49Stay calm.
00:29:49Control.
00:29:50Move.
00:29:51Don't wait for him.
00:29:52You have to box him.
00:29:54Be smart.
00:29:54Get this guy out of the
00:29:55corner at the belt.
00:29:57The trainer.
00:29:58You're the champ.
00:29:59Too slow.
00:30:00Get him out.
00:30:03Box him.
00:30:05You work to the jab
00:30:06and go to the body.
00:30:08It's there all day.
00:30:09Stop looking for anything
00:30:10else.
00:30:11You understand what I'm
00:30:11saying?
00:30:12Now, take a deep
00:30:14breath, champ.
00:30:16Okay.
00:30:17Now, listen.
00:30:17You work the jabs.
00:30:18Take the scores.
00:30:21Reed did work on the body
00:30:23early in that round.
00:30:24Some vicious shots,
00:30:26as you saw there.
00:30:27Controlled most of the
00:30:28early part of the round.
00:30:30The 20 is a cagey.
00:30:33And a cagey veteran who
00:30:38projects the attitude of
00:30:40I'm a winner in here.
00:30:41He seems very calm in the
00:30:43face of a better young
00:30:45athlete, perhaps.
00:30:47But he knows what he's
00:30:48doing.
00:30:48So, George, we heard Al
00:30:50Mitchell say to Reed,
00:30:51you work to the body and
00:30:53fire the jab.
00:30:54Quit looking for anything
00:30:55else.
00:30:55That's right, because you
00:30:56get a little careless
00:30:57thinking, hey, I got him.
00:30:58This guy's cagey.
00:30:59He's accustomed to
00:31:00adversity.
00:31:01He's not going to fold.
00:31:03Harold, how do you have it
00:31:04through four?
00:31:05Jim, three rounds to one.
00:31:07Thirty-nine, thirty-seven,
00:31:09David Reed.
00:31:10Jim, I guess the unusual
00:31:11thing about this fight to
00:31:12me is I never saw a
00:31:13right-handed fighter throw
00:31:15so many right-hand leads
00:31:16in my entire life.
00:31:17The rock group one, he
00:31:18doesn't snap a left chair.
00:31:20I mean, it's virtually all
00:31:22right-hand leads.
00:31:23He landed him real good in
00:31:24the first round.
00:31:25That's the round they gave
00:31:26him.
00:31:26But from then on in, David
00:31:27Reed saw it coming.
00:31:28He's been blocking him and
00:31:29doing a nice job coming
00:31:30forward, carrying and
00:31:31pacing his fight.
00:31:32That thing.
00:31:33Reed's outpacing him.
00:31:34And Reed, obviously
00:31:37listening well to Mitchell,
00:31:38has followed the plan in
00:31:39this round, working the
00:31:41jab and going to the body.
00:31:45Whenever Reed's decide to
00:31:46be a little subtle, Boudwani
00:31:49attacks with his quick
00:31:50lead right hand.
00:31:56Reed still has not taken
00:31:58the advice of his former
00:31:59to stop looking for the
00:31:59big shot, just do something.
00:32:04Good left jab now.
00:32:06That left jab can carry
00:32:08David Reed to a title if he
00:32:09just trusts in it.
00:32:11If he has faith in his
00:32:12dominance via the jab and
00:32:14sticks with it all night
00:32:15long, he's going to walk
00:32:16out of here with a title
00:32:17belt.
00:32:19And Reed has got
00:32:20excellent vision.
00:32:22No punches are thrown
00:32:23here.
00:32:23Get right in there and look
00:32:24at what he's doing and
00:32:25throw shots.
00:32:25Boudwani's showing that he
00:32:31feels he has to engage
00:32:33Reed more.
00:32:36And you suspect that
00:32:37Boudwani, who's always been
00:32:39partial to the right hand
00:32:40lead, is more so tonight
00:32:42looking at Reed's droopy left
00:32:44eyelid in front of him.
00:32:45And in fact, there's a
00:32:47welt, a lump, that's grown
00:32:49under the left eye of
00:32:50Reed.
00:32:51Sure is.
00:32:52And that welt is getting
00:32:53much bigger in this round
00:32:55as Boudwani has landed a
00:32:56couple of those right hand
00:32:57leads again.
00:32:58Which makes you wonder just
00:33:00how clearly Reed is seeing
00:33:03that punch.
00:33:06Reed has got excellent
00:33:07vision.
00:33:07I can tell you that's the
00:33:08way he sits in the pocket
00:33:09whenever Boudwani
00:33:10throw a combination.
00:33:11You can only do that
00:33:13with sight.
00:33:14Reed is landing his jab
00:33:16at a higher and higher
00:33:17rate of accuracy as the
00:33:19fight goes on.
00:33:20And that's what the
00:33:20champion should not allow
00:33:21him to do.
00:33:22Don't let him get
00:33:23confident with his left
00:33:24jab.
00:33:31You can almost see
00:33:32Boudwani's mind working
00:33:34saying, I can close that
00:33:35left eye.
00:33:36I'm not that far away from
00:33:37closing it right now.
00:33:41Hey, inspector, get this
00:33:46guy out of the corner
00:33:46before the bell rings.
00:33:48Here, hand me your mouth
00:33:48please.
00:33:49Okay.
00:33:50Here, rinse this off.
00:33:52Hand it back to me.
00:33:53Now listen, sir, the key
00:33:54is right.
00:33:55Don't you see the only
00:33:56thing, like I told you,
00:33:57is that right hand he
00:33:57tried to bring it under
00:33:58and over?
00:33:59You hook off it or go
00:34:00to the right away from
00:34:02it.
00:34:02Come, okay?
00:34:03Use your right hand.
00:34:06The jab is there.
00:34:07Stop looking for the
00:34:08single shot.
00:34:09You did right at the
00:34:10beginning when you threw
00:34:11the combination, punching
00:34:12combination and from the
00:34:14back, he doesn't know how
00:34:15to move backwards, make
00:34:16him work, tire him.
00:34:18It was sound too bad.
00:34:19Let's take home, control.
00:34:25Here's Boudwani whose best
00:34:27weapon has been that sneak
00:34:29right hand on the closed
00:34:32island and on the mouse.
00:34:35It doesn't carry much power.
00:34:37It's power of a good heart
00:34:39jab, but it is effective.
00:34:43Cut man Fred Jenkins able to
00:34:45bring some of the swelling
00:34:46down on David Reed's left
00:34:47dive between rounds, but you
00:34:49wonder how well Reed sees the
00:34:51right hand leads coming as
00:34:52Boudwani goes back to work with
00:34:54his bread and butter punch.
00:34:57Reed's corner told him to move
00:34:58over and away from that right
00:35:00hand.
00:35:00Stay on the left side a little
00:35:01bit, uses his own right hand.
00:35:04Let's see if he follows that
00:35:05direction, those directions.
00:35:08So far he did.
00:35:11Whatever you want to do, you hit
00:35:12him with your left and then move
00:35:14to your right.
00:35:16So the Boudwani will have to travel
00:35:18a longer distance to throw that
00:35:19right hand lead.
00:35:20Yeah, you want to just stay on the
00:35:21outside, then you can do it all
00:35:23night if you're quick enough.
00:35:24Reed threw 55 jabs in the last
00:35:26round as Al Mitchell continues to
00:35:29demand that he step up the jab
00:35:31output.
00:35:32Then he says under and over with
00:35:34the right hand.
00:35:36Reed's still trying to force the
00:35:38issue with the right hand.
00:35:39Needs to go back to the body.
00:35:41He did, and that was a good body
00:35:43punch.
00:35:44You see Boudwani waving his left
00:35:47hand, that's because that body
00:35:48shot hurt.
00:35:50I made him pay some attention.
00:35:53Reed is not following the
00:35:54direction to stay up on the left
00:35:55over the right side.
00:35:56Boudwani's left side.
00:35:59Stay over there.
00:36:04Boudwani, whenever he's moving,
00:36:05he's thinking about doing
00:36:06something.
00:36:21You've got to be accurate with
00:36:23those right hands to the body
00:36:24because that's when you start
00:36:25hurting your hands.
00:36:26One thing is for certain, thus far
00:36:29in his bid for a world title,
00:36:32David Reed has had a much tougher
00:36:33assignment than did Floyd Mayweather
00:36:35Jr. against Genaro Hernandez or
00:36:37Fernando Vargas against Yoriboy
00:36:39Campus.
00:36:40And both of those looked like
00:36:41formidable opponents coming in.
00:36:43Boudwani is thinking, consistently, he's thinking.
00:36:48He moves out of the way a little bit,
00:36:49but he has a plan.
00:36:51There you go.
00:36:52Solid right hand lead by Boudwani.
00:36:54And another one.
00:36:56And the Frenchman suddenly goes to work
00:36:57with the left hand.
00:37:00And again lands the right hand lead.
00:37:02And again, you've got to wonder
00:37:03if Reed sees it coming.
00:37:07No, Boudwani's smart.
00:37:08Boudwani is smart.
00:37:10He moves.
00:37:11He makes you think, I'm afraid.
00:37:12I'm hurt.
00:37:13Then he comes back and hurt you.
00:37:16Called a clever boxer.
00:37:18Good right hand to the body by Reed.
00:37:22Reed is standing still again.
00:37:24His corner told him to move
00:37:26to the left of the champion.
00:37:28Boudwani is like a right-hand pitcher
00:37:31who delivers from different angles.
00:37:33He's got a little of the Kevin Brown
00:37:35and the David Cohn in him
00:37:36and then he'll throw that right-hand lead
00:37:38over the top.
00:37:39He'll throw it from a three-quarter angle
00:37:40or he'll throw it from the side.
00:37:42He got caught with a left hook this time.
00:37:44Good left hook by Reed.
00:37:45Yeah.
00:37:45Woo-hoo.
00:37:51How are you doing?
00:37:53Okay, Reed.
00:37:55Reed.
00:37:56And the water plays.
00:37:59You're the bartender.
00:38:03You have to keep your hands up.
00:38:05Make him work.
00:38:08Donut.
00:38:09I'm hitting him.
00:38:12Be smart.
00:38:13You've got one punch
00:38:14you're trying to hit you with.
00:38:16The right-hand hook
00:38:17and the right uppercut.
00:38:19You understand what I'm saying?
00:38:23Score with the jab.
00:38:24Hit him here.
00:38:25Hit him here.
00:38:25Throw the right hand there
00:38:26and a straight right hand there.
00:38:28Go, let's go, let's go.
00:38:35Give him the mouthpiece.
00:38:36Fascinating fight to score
00:38:47as we go into the seventh.
00:38:49Reed landing more punches.
00:38:52Budwani very sparing in his punch output,
00:38:54but landing hard when he lands.
00:38:56That good one is very smart.
00:39:00He took charge in the beginning of the round
00:39:02to make this youngster think,
00:39:03hey, I'm coming after you.
00:39:04Then he settles back
00:39:05into his counterpunching position.
00:39:11Budwani not throwing punches
00:39:12to begin the seventh,
00:39:14and David Reed landing a couple of combinations
00:39:16to seize the initiative on the round.
00:39:22Good one is Trevor.
00:39:23Moves left, he moves right,
00:39:25drops his hand,
00:39:26then looks at something
00:39:27and think about what he's going to do.
00:39:32You want to start thinking
00:39:33about winning this fight soon, George,
00:39:35because he's not doing much
00:39:38and landing enough punches.
00:39:40He has a flurry or two during the round
00:39:43and doesn't do enough hooks
00:39:45to the body by David Reed.
00:39:47You're right.
00:39:48You're right.
00:39:49Reed's been landing
00:39:50in the right hand of the body all night.
00:39:51Now he's starting to land the left as well.
00:39:53Larry?
00:39:53You wonder why does a champion
00:39:57come to the other guy's home territory
00:40:00to fight him.
00:40:02The reason is,
00:40:03is that Budwani's gotten by far
00:40:04the biggest purse of his life,
00:40:06a million-dollar purse,
00:40:08and if he loses a close decision here,
00:40:12well, he took a million dollars for his title.
00:40:16And he can always claim,
00:40:17he can go back to Europe
00:40:18and claim that he didn't have a chance
00:40:20to win on Reed's home court anyway.
00:40:21Left hook lands for Reed.
00:40:23Budwani's got a lot of pride, guys.
00:40:25He's going to try to do everything he can
00:40:27to win this fight.
00:40:28You see him trying to get positioned
00:40:29to get this guy back.
00:40:31When you get in that ring,
00:40:32the last thing on your mind
00:40:33is your money.
00:40:34Judges have been brought in
00:40:36by the governing body.
00:40:37They are from Tijuana,
00:40:39Valencia, Venezuela,
00:40:41and one from New Jersey.
00:40:44So it's an international group.
00:40:47Reed missing over the top
00:40:48with the right hand
00:40:49and shaking his head
00:40:50as if to say,
00:40:51I almost had you.
00:40:51Budwani lands his right-hand lead again,
00:40:54but not as much mustard on it
00:40:56as was the case earlier in the fight.
00:40:58The second one was a little better.
00:41:00Now Budwani has got David Reed
00:41:02trying to set up,
00:41:03moving in and out of position,
00:41:05giving him some of his own medicine.
00:41:12Good combination by Reed.
00:41:13makes that an interesting round to score.
00:41:44It was Reed's round
00:41:45for two minutes and 45 seconds.
00:41:47Then Budwani had the big rally.
00:41:49You understand what I'm saying?
00:41:51Kind of don't mean nothing
00:41:52if you use a jab
00:41:53like we did in a gym workout.
00:41:54You're double-jabs.
00:41:55You can't counter it.
00:41:57Stop thinking about him countering.
00:41:59You use a double-jab,
00:42:00he can't counter it.
00:42:01Number two,
00:42:02you go to the right.
00:42:04Here's a rally at the end of the round.
00:42:11Budwani has done this consistently
00:42:12through the fight,
00:42:14hoping to win a round
00:42:15with a big rally
00:42:16somewhere during the round,
00:42:18usually in the last minute.
00:42:20He might have pulled it out
00:42:21with this rally.
00:42:23It's okay.
00:42:27Keep moving forward.
00:42:29Keep your hands up.
00:42:30Keep your hands up.
00:42:32Keep him down.
00:42:35Despite the big rally
00:42:39at the end of the preceding round,
00:42:40CompuBox numbers gave Reed
00:42:42an edge in power punches
00:42:44landed in the round.
00:42:47You can see that Harold Letterman
00:42:48scored it for the Frenchman, yes?
00:42:49Early on, Reed would stay in the pocket
00:42:51whenever this guy would attack him.
00:42:53Now he's starting to back up.
00:42:54Now you can get caught.
00:42:55You want to stay close
00:42:56and cover up.
00:42:58Use your defense.
00:43:00That's why he was able to get caught
00:43:02with three or four right hands
00:43:03backing up.
00:43:08Out is scheduled for 12 rounds.
00:43:10Laurent Budwani's world championship
00:43:12at 154 pounds
00:43:14on the table for the winner here.
00:43:17The champion is in
00:43:19the kind of territory
00:43:21he wants to be in.
00:43:2212 rounds.
00:43:23Oh, good right hand by David Reed.
00:43:26Reed's biggest right cross of the fight
00:43:27lands flush on the cheek of Budwani.
00:43:30And we learn one more thing
00:43:31about the Frenchman,
00:43:32which is that he brought
00:43:33a beard with him.
00:43:35He can take a shot.
00:43:37No question he can take a shot.
00:43:41There are a lot of 154-pound fighters
00:43:43who are getting up off the canvas now
00:43:45when Reed lands that right hand.
00:43:52And Budwani is thinking at this point.
00:43:54David Reed is sitting there
00:43:56trying to be a accomplished puncher.
00:43:57You can't do that with this guy.
00:43:58He's seemingly a little more tentative
00:44:10here in round eight.
00:44:12Perhaps the result of the Budwani rally
00:44:14that ended round seven.
00:44:22David did land the biggest punch
00:44:23to the round,
00:44:24which was that clean right cross.
00:44:27Budwani moves
00:44:28to Reed's left side.
00:44:31He seemed to think
00:44:31there's problems over there
00:44:33and he stays consistently over there.
00:44:35And Reed backs him up
00:44:37with a double jab
00:44:37and a right hand.
00:44:43Now Reed is standing in the pocket.
00:44:45He's not backing away, you see.
00:44:46Stays away from harm.
00:44:48Reed dropped his left hand inside
00:44:50and gave Budwani a shot with the right.
00:44:54David's hand speed
00:44:55apparent in the exchanges like that.
00:45:05You got to stand right there,
00:45:07use your pivot and get closer.
00:45:09Go back away.
00:45:09Good power in the right hand
00:45:20by the champion.
00:45:21Reed puts his left glove up
00:45:23by the side of his head
00:45:24to try to continue to protect
00:45:25against Laurent Budwani
00:45:27chopping right-hand shots.
00:45:30Oh, great work with the left hand
00:45:32by Reed there.
00:45:33To the body, to the head.
00:45:34Keep moving forward.
00:45:56Be smarter.
00:45:58But he is more active than you are.
00:46:00You're too late.
00:46:01You're waiting too much.
00:46:02You have to make a difference, champ.
00:46:07He's almost gone.
00:46:08You have to make a difference, champ.
00:46:13Don't let him back in.
00:46:14You're quicker than him, faster.
00:46:15Just score points.
00:46:17That's all I want.
00:46:18Outbox this kid, okay?
00:46:19And the kid's going to the right, okay?
00:46:23All right?
00:46:23That's why he do all his work.
00:46:24All right.
00:46:24That's why he do all his work.
00:46:28You hear more urgency
00:46:36coming from Budwani's corner.
00:46:43Trainer is Budwani's brother,
00:46:45and he was the one
00:46:45who was telling him,
00:46:47Reed is busier than you are.
00:46:49You're going to have to step it up.
00:46:50Harold, how do you have it?
00:46:54Jim, 78, 74, six rounds to two.
00:46:58David Reed.
00:46:59He's outboxing him, outworking him.
00:47:01There's no question.
00:47:02He's winning a clean punching,
00:47:03on effective aggressive.
00:47:04He's certainly a good defense.
00:47:06See that?
00:47:06He blocks those shots.
00:47:07He gets his hands up high.
00:47:08He elbows in tight.
00:47:10Good defense by David Reed.
00:47:11He got nailed to the seventh
00:47:12by dropping his hands.
00:47:13But I've got to point that one thing.
00:47:15Look at Judge Fernando Vizzo
00:47:16on our right side, Jim.
00:47:18Michelle, our carries,
00:47:19Budwani's promoter,
00:47:20keeps looking over his shoulder.
00:47:22He did that to me in Paris
00:47:23in an entire fight.
00:47:24I don't think that's fair.
00:47:25They're going to get our carries
00:47:27out of there.
00:47:27He has no right
00:47:28talking to the judge
00:47:29or looking at scores.
00:47:33You're saying how
00:47:34the carries is doing what?
00:47:37He's looking over the shoulder
00:47:39of Judge Fernando Vizzo
00:47:40to see how he's scoring the fight.
00:47:42Watch.
00:47:43The good thing about David Reed,
00:47:47he's been in Philadelphia,
00:47:48so he's accustomed to trading shots.
00:47:51You don't want to get him
00:47:52to doing that.
00:47:52You want to hit him
00:47:53and get out of the way.
00:47:54Reed has taken to training
00:47:55in Denver before his fights.
00:47:57He trained in Denver
00:47:58before this one.
00:47:58And one reason is
00:47:59that there are gym wars
00:48:01in Philadelphia.
00:48:02There are so many
00:48:03good sparring partners there.
00:48:04They want to make a name
00:48:05for themselves
00:48:06against big-name fighters.
00:48:07And he doesn't want
00:48:08the wear and tear,
00:48:09which he thinks has limited
00:48:11the star potential
00:48:11of some Philly fighters
00:48:13in the past.
00:48:16Reed trying to go
00:48:17to the body
00:48:17with the right hand.
00:48:18A little bit low,
00:48:18he pounded Budwani
00:48:20on the upper hip.
00:48:21Now he gets in
00:48:22a right-hand body shot.
00:48:24Come on, Malolo.
00:48:25Yep.
00:48:25The referee should step in
00:48:26and talk about that.
00:48:28And Randy Newman does.
00:48:30Newman,
00:48:31a former fighter himself.
00:48:33With good heavyweight.
00:48:34It looks to me
00:48:35as though Budwani has
00:48:37an abrasion
00:48:38or some kind of a cut
00:48:40near his left eye.
00:48:42Boy, David Reed
00:48:43is dropping his left hand
00:48:45as though he's inviting
00:48:46that right hand
00:48:46by Budwani.
00:48:50Budwani throwing
00:48:51the right-hand lead,
00:48:52but not with as much
00:48:53Christmas on it
00:48:53as was the case before.
00:48:55Oh, brilliant left hook
00:48:56by Reed.
00:48:57He's set it up
00:48:58with the two-body shots.
00:48:59Budwani rivals.
00:49:01Reed goes to work.
00:49:03And you can bet
00:49:04the champion
00:49:04will be holding here.
00:49:07He's brave,
00:49:08that champion,
00:49:09as he has a lot of courage.
00:49:10Right-hand shot lands
00:49:12for Reed.
00:49:12Budwani in serious trouble.
00:49:18Landed another right
00:49:19to the temple.
00:49:22Now Reed is going
00:49:23to concentrate
00:49:24and be able
00:49:24and calculate
00:49:25what he's doing.
00:49:26This punch is going
00:49:27to throw a lot
00:49:28of power away.
00:49:29Put the punches together
00:49:31and let the power
00:49:32develop in by itself.
00:49:33Closing seconds
00:49:34of the round.
00:49:36Bill will save Budwani
00:49:37from further home.
00:49:46David Reed is a great
00:49:47right-hand puncher,
00:49:48but it was a left hook
00:49:49that stunned Budwani
00:49:51there.
00:49:56one punch in this fight
00:50:09that has made a difference.
00:50:13One punch in this fight
00:50:16that has made a difference
00:50:17right here,
00:50:18a right and a left
00:50:19to the body
00:50:19followed by a wonderful
00:50:22Philadelphia left hook
00:50:23to the jaw.
00:50:24A cleanest grace
00:50:27off his head.
00:50:31Brilliant round
00:50:32for Reed.
00:50:33He landed 29 of 32
00:50:34power shots
00:50:35by CompuBox's
00:50:36estimation
00:50:37in that round.
00:50:39You see the abrasions
00:50:40around Budwani's left eye.
00:50:42Readers better be careful.
00:50:46Take your time.
00:50:47Get back behind
00:50:47your left jab
00:50:48because Budwani,
00:50:49he's not a coward
00:50:51and he can punch.
00:50:53And I can feel you
00:50:53smiling, George,
00:50:55when Al Mitchell
00:50:55said to Reed,
00:50:56the only thing I don't like
00:50:57is you dropping your hands.
00:50:59Yep.
00:51:00This champion,
00:51:00Budwani,
00:51:01is very smart
00:51:02and he's been
00:51:03in this kind of position
00:51:04before.
00:51:07There are a lot of fighters
00:51:08who are at their most
00:51:10dangerous
00:51:10when they seem
00:51:11to be in trouble.
00:51:13Budwani not throwing much
00:51:14to begin round 10
00:51:15but Reed offering respect
00:51:17and a little caution
00:51:18as he looks
00:51:19to get started again.
00:51:21He was smart enough
00:51:22to go to the body.
00:51:24Budwani.
00:51:25Now he's got things
00:51:26back under control.
00:51:28Reminds me of a fighter,
00:51:29Heinz Matson.
00:51:30Doesn't often throw a jab.
00:51:32Heinz Matson?
00:51:33Yeah, he's always trying
00:51:34to go to the body
00:51:35from Germany.
00:51:37Meanwhile, Budwani,
00:51:38who seldom throws a jab,
00:51:40throws three of four.
00:51:41Whoa!
00:51:41Another hook!
00:51:42And another lightning
00:51:43left hook by Reed.
00:51:48More body shots
00:51:49from Reed.
00:51:50That's what set up
00:51:50the great left hook
00:51:51in the last round.
00:51:54Frank, Frank!
00:51:56If he punches up,
00:51:57I'm wondering if he's
00:51:57going to point.
00:51:58Let's go!
00:51:59Randy Newman telling Reed
00:52:01that another low blow
00:52:02will bring a one-point penalty.
00:52:04David Reed has got to be smart.
00:52:08Go to the left jab.
00:52:09Do everything behind your jab.
00:52:11Fake, fake.
00:52:12Use a little footwork.
00:52:16Look at how well-conditioned
00:52:17the young fighter is, George.
00:52:18I'm surprised.
00:52:19For 11 fights,
00:52:20he has that much condition.
00:52:22I'm sure.
00:52:22He's brilliant.
00:52:23Still moving his head,
00:52:25still moving his feet
00:52:26in the right directions.
00:52:27He's better because
00:52:28that boot runner,
00:52:29he's all I get in.
00:52:30Well, we talked about
00:52:46that capacity to be dangerous
00:52:48when you're in trouble.
00:52:49What a shot in the dark
00:52:50that was.
00:52:53David Reed is better hold on.
00:52:55He's better hold on
00:52:56and be careful.
00:52:58Boot one has been
00:52:58in this position before
00:52:59and he knows how
00:53:00to fight in adversity.
00:53:08David Reed has turned
00:53:09into the old
00:53:09plowing puncher now
00:53:11and gotten away
00:53:12from all of his skill
00:53:13and speed.
00:53:14Jabs and body punches
00:53:15got Reed into that
00:53:16position of dominance.
00:53:18You should go back
00:53:18to jabs and body punches
00:53:20now.
00:53:21As his trainer,
00:53:22Al Mitchell said,
00:53:22it's there all night.
00:53:23And he's dropping his hand
00:53:24when his trainer told him,
00:53:26do not do that.
00:53:27And Gurdwani's looking
00:53:29to get off another
00:53:30right-hand lead.
00:53:32And he keeps moving
00:53:33his waist.
00:53:33Left, right, left,
00:53:35right, measuring
00:53:36the floor right hand.
00:53:37Good fight.
00:53:43Great fight.
00:53:44David, I want to see
00:53:45my little blows.
00:53:46It's going to cost you
00:53:47next time.
00:53:47Let's not pass it
00:53:47to a chance.
00:53:48Laura, don't miss your
00:53:49chance.
00:53:51You can finish him.
00:53:53Just be smart.
00:53:54If you really want,
00:53:56if you really think,
00:53:57you'll destroy him.
00:54:01You'll destroy him.
00:54:03Is he going to come
00:54:05after you?
00:54:06Have an ice thing.
00:54:07I don't like it.
00:54:09Okay.
00:54:12Okay.
00:54:13Suck it up
00:54:14and start doubling
00:54:15the jab now.
00:54:18Reed, once again,
00:54:19with the left hand.
00:54:21If they take away
00:54:22your best weapon,
00:54:23which is his right,
00:54:24you have to find a way
00:54:25to beat the opponent
00:54:26without it, but there
00:54:27you saw Boudouani
00:54:28who was showing him
00:54:30to set, showing himself
00:54:31to be a real
00:54:34price fighter.
00:54:35One of the better
00:54:36European price fighters
00:54:38we have seen
00:54:39in recent years.
00:54:41Told you,
00:54:42wasn't about money.
00:54:45Round 11.
00:54:47And there's the
00:54:48Letterman card.
00:54:49He gave Boudouani
00:54:50the last round.
00:54:56Boudouani is smelling
00:55:01knockout.
00:55:03He smells it
00:55:04and he's going to
00:55:04try to get it.
00:55:05And you heard
00:55:06Luis Acarius
00:55:07in his corner
00:55:07saying,
00:55:08you've got to finish him.
00:55:10Go get him.
00:55:10You can do it.
00:55:12You don't want to
00:55:12follow him around
00:55:13if you're David Reed.
00:55:14You want to keep
00:55:15your jab following
00:55:16him around.
00:55:16He waits until
00:55:17you stop jabbing
00:55:18and he'd come
00:55:19and get you.
00:55:29Boudouani
00:55:30throwing caution
00:55:31to the wind
00:55:31as he tries
00:55:33to reel in
00:55:34David Reed
00:55:34with power shots.
00:55:37At no point
00:55:38has Al Mitchell
00:55:39told his fighter
00:55:40to go out
00:55:40and finish Boudouani.
00:55:42You get the impression
00:55:43that Al would be
00:55:44pleased as punch
00:55:46if his man
00:55:47were coached
00:55:47to a decision victory.
00:55:49And it's not
00:55:50going to be easy.
00:55:54Boudouani makes
00:55:55the challenger
00:55:55follow him around,
00:55:57follow him around.
00:55:58Then when he stops,
00:55:59he attacks.
00:56:04Reed fires his jab
00:56:06and keeps up
00:56:07the tempo.
00:56:08Boudouani's more
00:56:09or less helpless
00:56:09against him.
00:56:10But when Reed stops,
00:56:12Boudouani attacks
00:56:13with the right hand.
00:56:15Boudouani suddenly
00:56:16is turning southpaw.
00:56:17steps into a southpaw stance.
00:56:23D, David Reed,
00:56:24he has a lot of experience,
00:56:25international experience,
00:56:26so the southpaw stuff
00:56:27is not going to bother him.
00:56:30And Boudouani
00:56:31seemingly recognizes that
00:56:32as he steps back
00:56:33into his conventional stance.
00:56:35Boudouani is starting to reach,
00:56:39step out,
00:56:40and he's playing
00:56:41into the champions.
00:56:46Boudouani landing
00:56:47another right
00:56:48and Reed stops bumping
00:56:50as Boudouani fires.
00:56:52Boudouani is trying
00:56:53to play catch-up,
00:56:54and he's playing it
00:56:57very well here.
00:56:59Question of whether
00:56:59he has the power
00:57:01to do something dramatic.
00:57:03Good hard right uppercut
00:57:05in there by Reed.
00:57:07And Reed is,
00:57:07like I said earlier,
00:57:08he's been in Philadelphia,
00:57:09so he's not ashamed
00:57:10to fight.
00:57:12But he's got an instinct
00:57:14to trade with Boudouani,
00:57:15and I have a feeling
00:57:17that Mitchell might be happier
00:57:18if he would box it.
00:57:20But now,
00:57:20you can throw that away now.
00:57:21He's not going to box.
00:57:22This guy's not going
00:57:23to allow him to box.
00:57:24You're going to have
00:57:25to stand there and fight.
00:57:26Good left hook by Reed.
00:57:28Boudouani still attacking
00:57:29with the right.
00:57:38Oh!
00:57:42You know you're doing
00:57:50it, then do it.
00:57:51This bout is very close.
00:57:53Last round right out.
00:57:55The last round.
00:57:56I want this round.
00:57:57You understand what I mean?
00:57:58I want you boxing.
00:57:59Reed,
00:58:00you don't know
00:58:03what's going to happen.
00:58:04You have to take him down.
00:58:07You have three minutes,
00:58:08not three hours.
00:58:10Give it all.
00:58:13Okay?
00:58:14Step around.
00:58:16All right?
00:58:17He need this round.
00:58:18You want to win it.
00:58:20Okay?
00:58:20This is very close.
00:58:25So go now.
00:58:26You have to do it.
00:58:27This is the last.
00:58:31In round 11,
00:58:32for the first time
00:58:33in the bout,
00:58:34CompuBox numbers
00:58:35found Boudouani
00:58:36throwing more punches
00:58:37and landing more
00:58:38than Reed.
00:58:4028 out of 63.
00:58:41By far,
00:58:42numerically,
00:58:43the best round
00:58:44of the bout
00:58:44for Boudouani.
00:58:45Included in there
00:58:46a 24-7 inch
00:58:47and power shots.
00:58:48And you heard
00:58:49Boudouani's corner
00:58:50saying knock him out.
00:58:51You heard Al Mitchell
00:58:52say,
00:58:52I want you to win
00:58:53the round.
00:58:57He will,
00:58:57Reed will not be able
00:58:58to win it
00:58:58with a left jab.
00:58:59He's going to have
00:59:00to get in there
00:59:00and wade in
00:59:01and do the Philadelphia.
00:59:03Harold,
00:59:04how do you have it
00:59:04going to the final stance?
00:59:05Jim,
00:59:06106,
00:59:07102,
00:59:097 rounds to 4.
00:59:10David Reed.
00:59:11I'm just thinking
00:59:12how much the busier guy
00:59:14better boxer.
00:59:15Certainly,
00:59:15I had a good for Boudouani
00:59:16runs 10 and 11.
00:59:18He came on strong.
00:59:19There's no question.
00:59:19He's trying to pull
00:59:20this fight out,
00:59:21but I think he needs
00:59:22to knock out the winner,
00:59:23Jim.
00:59:23I think David Reed's
00:59:24controlling it
00:59:24with his boxing.
00:59:25And a moment ago,
00:59:26you saw a brilliant
00:59:27Reed combination
00:59:28as he tries
00:59:29to produce
00:59:30an Oscar De La Hoya
00:59:31style 12th round rally
00:59:33to satisfy his man
00:59:34Al Mitchell's demand.
00:59:40And you're right,
00:59:41George.
00:59:41It's a fight
00:59:42and Reed is ready
00:59:43for the fight.
00:59:47Brilliant hand speed
00:59:48for Reed
00:59:49as he fires
00:59:50his combinations
00:59:51and makes his statement.
00:59:53Trying to take
00:59:54a title belt
00:59:55in a real test
00:59:57against a top champion.
00:59:59You got to ask Reed,
01:00:07what are you saving
01:00:07it for?
01:00:08This is it.
01:00:10Don't hold back.
01:00:13Right hand landed
01:00:14in close for Reed.
01:00:18Boudouani has not
01:00:19been able to land
01:00:19one of his big
01:00:20right hand leads
01:00:21so far in the round.
01:00:23Reed much busier.
01:00:24Now Boudouani finds
01:00:27without throwing punches.
01:00:28Reed cannot walk in
01:00:29without throwing punches.
01:00:31Why would
01:00:32Doudouani
01:00:33turn it to a
01:00:34southpaw
01:00:34at this stage
01:00:35of the game?
01:00:35He's trying to hold
01:00:36himself from being
01:00:37knocked out
01:00:38and that's smart.
01:00:39Anything it takes,
01:00:40don't quit.
01:00:40Oh, another brilliant
01:00:42left hook by Reed.
01:00:44This is championship stuff
01:00:46that David Reed
01:00:47has produced
01:00:47in this round.
01:00:49On demand,
01:00:51combinations,
01:00:52high energy,
01:00:53the kind of rally
01:00:54necessary
01:00:55to leave,
01:00:56no doubt.
01:00:58Trying to become
01:00:59the third member
01:01:00of his Olympic class
01:01:01to win a world championship.
01:01:03looking down the road
01:01:05toward potentially
01:01:06huge fights
01:01:07against Fernando
01:01:08Vargas,
01:01:09against Oscar
01:01:10De La Hoya
01:01:11or Felix Trinidad
01:01:12or Ike Quartier
01:01:13or some combination
01:01:14of the three.
01:01:15A left hand
01:01:16by Boudouani.
01:01:17Snaps Reed's head back.
01:01:19That hurt
01:01:20and it gets all
01:01:21into the bottom
01:01:21of your knees.
01:01:23You gotta fight
01:01:23out of it.
01:01:25David goes down
01:01:26to one knee.
01:01:27Randy Newman
01:01:27calls it a slip.
01:01:28A fight to the finish.
01:01:34They forgot
01:01:35to even say
01:01:3510 seconds.
01:01:41Boy.
01:01:42I had Reed
01:01:43winning the fight.
01:01:46It's hard
01:01:46to take a champion's title
01:01:48when he fights
01:01:48like that
01:01:49for the last two rounds.
01:01:51But I think Reed
01:01:52won the 12th round
01:01:52big because he dominated
01:01:54the first two minutes
01:01:55of the round
01:01:56before Boudouani
01:01:57finally rallied
01:01:58at the end.
01:02:09CompuBox numbers
01:02:10in the final round.
01:02:11David Reed
01:02:12threw 70 punches.
01:02:13His most active round
01:02:15in the second half
01:02:16of the fight.
01:02:17Landed 34
01:02:18and had a 30-16
01:02:20edge in power shots.
01:02:21It was the kind
01:02:22of rally
01:02:22that champions
01:02:24produce
01:02:24when they absolutely
01:02:25have to have it.
01:02:26You gotta be a champ
01:02:27all the way
01:02:28from the first
01:02:29especially the final
01:02:30three minutes.
01:02:34Harold,
01:02:34how'd you have
01:02:35the fight?
01:02:36116,
01:02:37111,
01:02:38eight rounds
01:02:39to four.
01:02:40David Reed.
01:02:41I also gave him
01:02:42the 12th round chin.
01:02:42There's no question.
01:02:43He carried it
01:02:44for two minutes,
01:02:45maybe two and a half
01:02:46minutes before
01:02:46Boudouani came on.
01:02:47I mean,
01:02:48absolutely David
01:02:48won that 12th round.
01:02:49But you gotta give David
01:02:51a 10-8 round
01:02:52in round nine.
01:02:52I mean,
01:02:53that was the really
01:02:54big defining ground
01:02:55in the entire fight.
01:02:56He staggered him.
01:02:57He certainly deserves
01:02:58an extra point
01:02:58in the ninth round.
01:02:59So David Reed
01:03:00by five points.
01:03:01There's no question
01:03:02he won a fight.
01:03:02An interesting battle
01:03:09that was a tactical fight
01:03:11through the first
01:03:12six or seven rounds.
01:03:14Then as Laurent Boudouani
01:03:15sensed the desperation
01:03:17of his situation
01:03:17and stepped up
01:03:18the attack,
01:03:19it became,
01:03:20as George Foreman
01:03:21called it,
01:03:21an all-out Philadelphia
01:03:23fight in the last
01:03:25five rounds.
01:03:26Here's some action
01:03:27from the closing stanzas
01:03:28starting in round
01:03:29number nine
01:03:30when David Reed
01:03:32was able to hurt
01:03:33Boudouani
01:03:34with that staggering
01:03:35left hook there.
01:03:37And then in round ten
01:03:39as Reed was trying
01:03:40to follow up
01:03:41the assault
01:03:41and again landed
01:03:43the left in close,
01:03:44Boudouani came back
01:03:45with his right-hand shots
01:03:46and momentarily
01:03:48staggered Reed.
01:03:49Then in the last round
01:03:50when Al Mitchell
01:03:50told his fighter
01:03:51to go out
01:03:51and win the round,
01:03:52David Reed left
01:03:53no doubt
01:03:54with combination
01:03:55punching like that
01:03:56in the first
01:03:56two minutes
01:03:57of the round.
01:03:58But as had been
01:03:59his habit
01:03:59throughout the fight,
01:04:01Boudouani rallied
01:04:01in the last 30 seconds
01:04:03landing that one
01:04:04big left hand
01:04:05before the bell
01:04:06sounded to end
01:04:07the 12 rounds.
01:04:11Boudouani just
01:04:12didn't want to do
01:04:13anything but a hard
01:04:14right hand here
01:04:14and there.
01:04:15A good left hook
01:04:16behind it could have
01:04:17changed everything
01:04:17tonight.
01:04:18Reed the more
01:04:19well-rounded fighter
01:04:20showing a greater
01:04:22variety of skills
01:04:23throughout the bout.
01:04:25Boudouani has a game
01:04:26plan all his own
01:04:28and you can certainly
01:04:29see how it's been
01:04:30effective throughout
01:04:30his career.
01:04:32Did you win the fight
01:04:32or did you beat
01:04:33the champion?
01:04:34That's what the judges
01:04:34are asking themselves
01:04:36right now.
01:04:36Well, here's the answer
01:04:37as we go to Michael
01:04:38Buffer in the ring.
01:04:41Ladies and gentlemen,
01:04:41here at Bally's Park Place,
01:04:43Atlantic City, New Jersey,
01:04:44we go to the Budweiser
01:04:46scorecards.
01:04:48Fernando Visto
01:04:49scores the bout
01:04:49118
01:04:50to 112.
01:04:52Alejandro Roisin
01:04:54scores it
01:04:54117
01:04:55to 112.
01:04:58Jon Stewart
01:04:58scores it
01:04:59117
01:05:00to 111
01:05:02for the winner
01:05:03by unanimous
01:05:04decision
01:05:05and new
01:05:07WBA
01:05:08junior
01:05:09middleweight
01:05:10champion
01:05:11of the world
01:05:12the American
01:05:14Dream
01:05:14David
01:05:16Reed.
01:05:19final punch
01:05:41that numbers
01:05:42and you can see
01:05:43the margin
01:05:43by which Reed
01:05:44outlanded
01:05:46Budwani
01:05:46markedly more active
01:05:48throwing 335
01:05:49more punches
01:05:50than the Frenchman
01:05:51did.
01:05:52Frenchman landing
01:05:53at a very high
01:05:54rate of accuracy
01:05:54as his right-hand
01:05:56lead constantly
01:05:57targeted
01:05:58David Reed's
01:05:59drooping left
01:06:00eyelid.
01:06:01Jabs in the bout.
01:06:03Budwani
01:06:03scarcely throws
01:06:04jabs.
01:06:05Only an average
01:06:06of about 10
01:06:06per round.
01:06:08Reed throwing
01:06:08a lot of them
01:06:09not landing
01:06:10at a particularly
01:06:11high rate
01:06:11but the activity
01:06:13level was important
01:06:14in setting up
01:06:15his power punches
01:06:16which he landed
01:06:17at an astonishing
01:06:18rate of accuracy.
01:06:19Look at that
01:06:19145 out of
01:06:22254
01:06:23crosses
01:06:24hooks
01:06:25and uppercuts
01:06:26that ultimately
01:06:28gave Reed
01:06:29the margin
01:06:30of victory
01:06:30in a unanimous
01:06:32decision that
01:06:33was slightly
01:06:34more one-sided
01:06:35than you might
01:06:35have expected
01:06:36it to be.
01:06:37And now Larry
01:06:37Merchant stands
01:06:38by with the
01:06:39third member
01:06:40of the 1996
01:06:41American Olympic
01:06:42boxing team
01:06:42to have won
01:06:43a world title
01:06:44David Reed.
01:06:45Alright, thank you
01:06:47very much Jim
01:06:47and congratulations
01:06:48David.
01:06:49You said that
01:06:50this was going
01:06:51for another
01:06:52gold medal.
01:06:53Does it feel
01:06:54that way?
01:06:55It felt just like
01:06:56it.
01:06:56You know, I was
01:06:56in my hometown
01:06:57crowd and
01:06:58everybody was here
01:06:59for me.
01:07:00They was pulling
01:07:00for me.
01:07:01First of all,
01:07:01I would like to
01:07:02thank America
01:07:02Presents
01:07:03and everybody
01:07:05that was in
01:07:05my corner out
01:07:06there around
01:07:07the country
01:07:07and around
01:07:07the world.
01:07:08And it was
01:07:10a well-harded
01:07:11tremendous fight.
01:07:12You know, the guy
01:07:13did not want
01:07:14him to give
01:07:15his belt up.
01:07:16Everyone thought
01:07:17of you coming
01:07:18out of the Olympics
01:07:18as a one-punch
01:07:21kind of fighter
01:07:22but you had
01:07:24to show tonight
01:07:25that you have
01:07:26learned a lot
01:07:26since that time
01:07:27to be able
01:07:28to beat a clever
01:07:29and tough boxer
01:07:31as Boudouani was.
01:07:32Well, Boudouani,
01:07:33like I said before,
01:07:34Boudouani was tough.
01:07:35He didn't want
01:07:36to lose his belt
01:07:37today but I had
01:07:38to take it to him
01:07:38the last round
01:07:39and show him
01:07:40who was the better man.
01:07:40Did you do anything
01:07:42to adjust to the fact
01:07:43that he was hitting you
01:07:44with those sneak
01:07:45right hands?
01:07:46Well, it was very sneaky.
01:07:48You know, the whole time
01:07:49in his training camp
01:07:50I know he was working
01:07:51on it because of
01:07:51my left eye
01:07:52but, you know,
01:07:53as you can see
01:07:54that wasn't a factor.
01:07:55He caught me with
01:07:56a couple of good
01:07:56right hands
01:07:57but I was able
01:07:58to stand up to it.
01:07:59Were you ever hurt
01:08:00by any punches
01:08:01he threw?
01:08:02He shook me
01:08:03a couple of times.
01:08:04I ain't gonna lie
01:08:04but, you know,
01:08:05every fighter gets shook.
01:08:07If you can get shook,
01:08:08can you come back?
01:08:10And I came back.
01:08:11It looked as though
01:08:12you had a chance
01:08:13to close the show
01:08:15in the eighth round.
01:08:17Do you remember
01:08:17how that went?
01:08:18What was going
01:08:19through your mind
01:08:20after you hurt him?
01:08:21Yeah, I was exchanging
01:08:23him from the body
01:08:23and I ended up
01:08:24throwing the left hook
01:08:25from the body
01:08:26and, you know,
01:08:29it hit him
01:08:29and he was shook,
01:08:30you know,
01:08:30so I tried to take him out
01:08:32but I couldn't.
01:08:33You know,
01:08:33he was a more veteran
01:08:34to stay in the fight.
01:08:36What are your thoughts
01:08:37about joining
01:08:39Floyd Mayweather Jr.
01:08:40and Fernando Vargas,
01:08:42your Olympic teammates,
01:08:44as a professional champion?
01:08:46I feel real good.
01:08:47You know,
01:08:48when I fought
01:08:48in the Olympic trials,
01:08:49you know,
01:08:50in the Olympic box-off,
01:08:50Zaire Raheem
01:08:53and Terrence Carlton,
01:08:55they all fought first
01:08:56and I was the last
01:08:57Philadelphia guy
01:08:57to make the Olympic team.
01:09:00So, you know,
01:09:01it's the same there.
01:09:02You know,
01:09:02I was the last one
01:09:03to win a world title
01:09:05so now I'm joining PAC.
01:09:09Don't count me out.
01:09:11Nobody will.
01:09:11Thank you very, very much,
01:09:13David Reed.
01:09:13David Reed,
01:09:13David Reed.
01:09:14David Reed,
01:09:14David Reed,
01:09:15David Reed,
01:09:16David Reed,
01:09:17of these remarkable young men
01:09:19from the 1996 Olympic team,
01:09:22which is that there is
01:09:23no Y2K problem
01:09:25for the youth of America.
01:09:28The millennium bug
01:09:30will be squashed
01:09:31as they rush in
01:09:33to the new century,
01:09:35the next generation
01:09:36of American champions.
01:09:39Jim?
01:09:40The millennium bug
01:09:42will be squashed
01:09:44as they rush in
01:09:46to the new century,
01:09:48the next generation
01:09:49of American champions.
01:09:51Jim?
01:09:52All right.
01:09:53Thanks very much, Larry.
01:09:54George, what a show.
01:09:55And you look back
01:09:56at what has happened
01:09:57to David Reed
01:09:58since he left the Olympics
01:09:59in 1996.
01:10:00First, the surgery
01:10:01on the eyelid
01:10:01and the long delay
01:10:02before his professional career
01:10:04got underway.
01:10:04And since that time,
01:10:06as we said earlier,
01:10:07you might argue
01:10:08that nobody's ever fought
01:10:09a tougher catalog
01:10:10of opponents
01:10:11in the first dozen fights
01:10:12than this guy
01:10:13has been in with.
01:10:14Tonight,
01:10:14all those hard fights
01:10:15against tough opponents
01:10:16really paid off for Dave.
01:10:18Yeah, you look at that resume
01:10:19and he fought
01:10:19as though he's been fighting
01:10:20maybe 50 or 60 boxing matches.
01:10:23An excellent boxer
01:10:24with a great left jab
01:10:26and combinations.
01:10:27And he stays in the pocket.
01:10:28I like that most of all.
01:10:29Yet another fight
01:10:30that he can grow from
01:10:31tonight, huh?
01:10:32Oh, yeah.
01:10:32And I don't think
01:10:33the eye's gonna be any factor.
01:10:34So everyone that had
01:10:35some surgery,
01:10:35go get a job.
01:10:37David Reed got his surgery
01:10:38and he went to work.
01:10:39It's great to see
01:10:39a natural knockout punter
01:10:41like Reed
01:10:42who understands
01:10:43when you settle
01:10:44for a decision
01:10:44to win the fight.
01:10:45Yeah, he did everything
01:10:46like his corner told him.
01:10:47A few times he would be still
01:10:49and he got caught
01:10:49but then he would jump up
01:10:51and start boxing again.
01:10:52He's excellent.
01:10:53I'm gonna catch you
01:10:54in New York next week,
01:10:55Madison Square Garden.
01:10:56I'd like to see
01:10:56a rematch of these guys too.
01:10:58Maybe someday.
01:10:59All right.
01:11:00Thanks very much
01:11:01for being with us.
01:11:01We'll have a final word
01:11:02on boxing in just a moment.
01:11:03Let's look ahead
01:11:04to some upcoming programs.
01:11:06He's got a gun.
01:11:08Take the money.
01:11:12Run!
01:11:13The suspect has been
01:11:14identified as
01:11:15Jake Sims Jr.,
01:11:17a recent escapee
01:11:18from the Clarion County Jail.
01:11:20I'm not gonna tell anybody
01:11:21if that's what you're thinking.
01:11:22The first thing you learn
01:11:23as a kid is not this real, right?
01:11:25It's funny how your life
01:11:26can change.
01:11:27She's a good woman.
01:11:29I'm certain she'll be back.
01:11:31That's your husband?
01:11:32In the blink of an eye.
01:11:33Maybe you will never
01:11:34see me again.
01:11:35Did that ever occur to you?
01:11:36Get a hold of yourself.
01:11:38There is conflicting
01:11:39information as to whether
01:11:40Charlotte Emery is a...
01:11:42That ultimately gave Reed
01:11:44the margin of victory
01:11:45in a unanimous decision
01:11:47that was slightly more
01:11:49one-sided than you might
01:11:50have expected it to be.
01:11:51And boxing after dark
01:11:53returns later this month.
01:11:54Aiki Bayabuchi,
01:11:55best known for his
01:11:55thrilling decision
01:11:56over David Tua,
01:11:57takes on another good one
01:11:58in Chris Byrd.
01:11:59Also, Canadian
01:11:59Kirk Johnson and Al Cole
01:12:01fight a rematch
01:12:01on their rock'em-sock'em
01:12:03majority draw
01:12:04from December.
01:12:05And in April,
01:12:05the King of Swing,
01:12:06Prince Nassim Ahmed,
01:12:07returns.
01:12:08He'll be cheered on
01:12:09by 15,000 English
01:12:11faithful in Manchester
01:12:12as he takes on
01:12:13European and
01:12:14Commonwealth champion
01:12:15Paul Engel.
01:12:16Tonight in Atlantic City,
01:12:1722 rounds of fighting
01:12:19here on HBO.
01:12:21Lou Savarese and
01:12:22Lance Mount-Whitaker
01:12:24fought a big man's war.
01:12:26Both fighters over
01:12:27240 pounds,
01:12:28both landing thunderous
01:12:29blows throughout
01:12:3010 rounds.
01:12:31Savarese getting the
01:12:32decision on greater
01:12:34craftsmanship.
01:12:34You might have seen it
01:12:36that way going in.
01:12:37And then David Reed
01:12:38became the third
01:12:38member of the 1996
01:12:39Olympic team to win
01:12:41a world championship,
01:12:42joining Fernando Vargas
01:12:44and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
01:12:45with a stirring
01:12:4612-round decision
01:12:47over tough French
01:12:48champion
01:12:49Laurent Buduani.
01:12:50Congratulations,
01:12:51the American dream,
