England's vice-captain admitted that they will be looking to tackle Bangladesh's Marufa Akter's swing early on in their upcoming clash in the Women's World Cup.
00:00Hi Chandi, you've been to India at least a couple of times before for T20GI series, but in terms of ODI cricket, what's been your preparation like in terms of ODI as well as practice?
00:14I guess we've come off the back of a practice camp in Dubai. We're sort of training and playing some practice games in 40 degree heat, so I guess acclimatising there and moving across to Bangalore.
00:29I think we've got a lot of game timing before this World Cup, which I think has been really important for both our batters and bowlers to really, I guess, meet match intensity and get out there as a team.
00:41You know, 50 over cricket really comes with its challenges, especially in the heat and humidity and especially here in Guwahati where it has been hot.
00:50And there's lots of dew out there as well, I guess, when it gets a bit later.
00:55We've done a lot of prep bowling with sort of wet balls and trying to really nail our skills when they're challenged in different ways that maybe we don't have back at home.
01:04And given that you are also, you are an all-rounder and I saw you like working on specifics on batting, like if you can throw some light on, what is it that with the bat you are trying or like what adjustment you had to make in subcontinent conditions?
01:21Yeah, I think, you know, with subcontinent conditions comes the offer of extra spin, so trying to really make sure that you're hitting with the spin and going through all your different options.
01:33I've been sweeping quite a lot, reverse sweeping, which is something that I might not get out in a game, you know, straight away.
01:39But it's something that I've put a lot of hours into to make sure that when I do, hopefully it goes well.
01:44Probably in England it feels like a high-risk shot, but the players out here in India, you know, play a sweep, a reverse sweep, like they do a cover drive.
01:52So I guess, yeah, trying to really get deep into the nitty-gritty of batting and I think, you know, every next session you have, having a specific focus so that you can get better and be prepared to what you're about to face.
02:08I'm not sure.
02:36I'm not sure what that's going to do at the task, really.
02:39What is the captain that used to be on it for other teams?
02:43What is it that people are thinking about giving better some extra time?
02:48I'm sorry.
02:51What team is thinking about giving extra time to battles?
02:54That's what you're asking.
02:56I don't know what the team's going to be.
02:59Sorry.
03:01Sorry.
03:03Sorry.
03:04Hi.
03:08Hi.
03:09Great start of the tournament, especially for Lindsay Smith.
03:13It's been quite a journey for her.
03:14She debuted in 2018.
03:16Didn't play for a few years.
03:17Made a comeback last year.
03:18Made a comeback last year.
03:19Made a comeback this year.
03:20And just tell us about the way she performed.
03:23What does it say about her character?
03:25Yeah, I think she's had an incredible journey in international cricket.
03:29I guess breaking through in 2018 and then having a bit of a break.
03:34And she's been working really hard for, you know, well, I guess her whole career.
03:39But I guess specifically the last three years, she's really nailed her stuff in regional cricket and been so good that she's been hard to ignore.
03:48And I think that's a credit to her character.
03:51You know, she's fiery and she's determined and she's someone that you want in your team.
03:57I think, you know, she's been exceptional for us, especially this summer.
04:01And I guess that's credit to the work that she's put in.
04:03And it's really exciting to be out there and loving her celebrations as well.
04:08Almost shocked, I think, when she got that first wicket.
04:11So, yeah, I think with those kind of people, it's always amazing to see their success and celebrate as a team.
04:20It's a first welcome for you since you've been into leadership position, you've captain spirit for a couple of years now.
04:39And this is also an influence site that is slightly, has a newer leadership, a new captain and a new coach.
04:48How much inputs do you give or like what in terms of the team environment itself?
04:54With you, are you among the leadership group and what those sort of like, in your mind as well, like someone who's captain the team and all that, how does it all fit in?
05:05Yeah, I guess having Nat and Lottie sort of feels like a bit of a fresh start for us all.
05:11You know, the players in the team might not have changed usually, but I guess the things that we're looking to do and,
05:17and being really specific about how we go, go about our ODI cricket.
05:22I guess that attention to detail and, and we want to show our grit and determination.
05:27And I think that comes from, from Nat in the, in the way in which she goes about her cricket.
05:32You know, you watch her bat and, and she's someone that really puts, puts her hand up and, and has those big innings for the team.
05:39And I think just from, I guess, the way that she behaves, sort of that filters down.
05:44Um, you know, Lottie's, um, a coach who reads the game really well and, and it seems really simple when she, when she talks it through.
05:51But we all know that, you know, cricket is, can be quite complicated.
05:55Um, so I guess breaking things down, keeping it really simple and, and going into specifics has really helped us, I guess, as a group.
06:04Um, I, feeling really, really honoured to be vice-captain for, for this tournament.
06:09Um, I guess being a bit of a sounding board for Nat, um, trying to make sure that she has everything she needs to, to be really clear and, um, you know, um, be the best version of herself.
06:23For us, um, and I guess, yeah, sort of just being there as, as an, as an option, um, more, more than anything.
06:31Um, I'm probably someone who's not going to come forward with 10 million different ideas, but, um, I guess thinking about the game and having a bit of a cricket brain.
06:40And, and trying to shout out when I, when I feel like I see something that, that could really help.
06:46Um, but we've got, we've got a lot of characters and leaders in this team.
06:49Um, you know, Heather's been brilliant.
06:52Um, to come back from injury.
06:54Um, I guess tapping into her knowledge when, when we can and, and really learning, um, as a group.
07:01And like, this is a question in two parts.
07:03One, like your vice-captain and you rub shoulders closely with Heather and London's grid as well.
07:10What kind of person are you?
07:12Because now the leadership is, like you're a part of, officially a part of the leadership group.
07:16What kind of a person are you?
07:18And secondly, how do you, uh, go about preparing for, against a team that you haven't really played?
07:24The only ODI you played was the last team, uh, last ODI World Cup.
07:28Uh, yes, there are these video bookages and games that you can like tap into.
07:33But in terms of on-ground preparations, how does that go?
07:37And given that you are now someone who's in the leadership as a team, who asked you?
07:43Um, I guess as a person I don't really change, no matter what role I have.
07:47Um, I'm a bit sarcastic and jovial, but, um, I really think about the game, uh, beyond that.
07:55Um, so I guess try not to change too much, um, bringing that into, into whatever discussions that we're having.
08:02Um, I guess we're playing, playing a team that we don't play very often comes with its challenges.
08:07Um, you know, we've all, um, they work really hard behind the scenes to, to bring a lot of information for us.
08:14Um, some people love it, uh, and they're watching all the videos, looking at all the stats,
08:18and others probably choose to, to just see the game in front of them.
08:22I guess in the nets in terms of today and yesterday, we, we tried to replicate a bit of their spin
08:27coming from a bit lower trajectories, a bit, you know, flatter and a bit slower.
08:31Um, so really trying to, I guess, simulate what we're, what we're probably going to see, um, tomorrow.
08:37Um, so I guess, yeah, being really specific with practices, but equally, uh, cricket's cricket.
08:43It, it doesn't change too much and you, you've got to be the best team on the day and hopefully we can do that.
08:48Sorry, I didn't hear you.
08:58I'm saying that, uh, how do you rate biology?
09:02Okay.
09:03And, uh, uh, since the only thing as practice, uh, that, when you were involved,
09:09uh, who do you think is great for you?
09:15I don't know, I don't know what you said.
09:17Um, I guess they had a, a really brilliant win against Pakistan, um, to start off their competition.
09:29I think their bowling attack is, is fantastic. Um, they're really good in these conditions.
09:34Um, so I guess looking to negate the swinging ball early, um, with Marufa and then, um, I guess settling in against the spin and batting really long, I think is, is how we're going to approach the game.
09:46Um, I think if we can bat 50 overs and put a really competitive score on the board, uh, if we bat first or, um, I guess replicate the game against Africa would be lovely.
09:56Um, but, um, you know, cricket doesn't, doesn't always go like that.
09:59So I think being, being really clinical and disciplined, uh, within our game and, and really extending our skills and, and, you know, being better for longer.
10:08I think if we, if we look at ourselves, then hopefully we can, um, yeah, perform well tomorrow.
