00:00Well, the U.S. president, turning to other news now, escalated the militarization of his anti-crime and migration crackdown this week.
00:08Donald Trump, after weeks of speculation that he would do so, has indeed authorized the deployment of 300 troops to Chicago, which is the country's third largest city.
00:18That came as tensions were already running high after a federal agent shot an allegedly armed motorist there Saturday.
00:24Illinois Senator Dick Durbin describing the move as a shameful chapter in U.S. history.
00:31He accused the president of spreading fear, which is a sentiment that many residents largely echoed.
00:40Throwing out smoke bombs. I mean, we ain't in danger. We're in danger all the time with them here.
00:44They're leaving and they want to hurt us. They want to break us by throwing tear gas.
00:49Look at what's going on. These are war zones. These are war zones in neighborhoods that are full of life, full of culture, full of life, full of vibrancy.
00:58We love our diversity. This is perpetrated by people that want to go back 100 years ago to the civil rights, when people lynch, when there are people getting lynched.
01:07This is what this is about. And we've got to unite working people against this fascist authoritarian regime.
01:12Now, this is, of course, all a part of a much broader push by the Trump administration to deploy federal troops to Democratic-led cities.
01:20But it's worth mentioning that Donald Trump did face a temporary setback on similar efforts in the western city of Portland,
01:26where a federal judge blocked the administration from deploying the National Guard there.
01:30He argued that the relatively small protests the city has seen over immigration raids simply do not justify the use of federalized forces.
01:39So this is what we are saying to make the streets of the country, right?
