00:00Breaking tonight, Donald Trump orders Israel to stop bombing Gaza
00:05after Hamas agrees to part of his peace plan.
00:09This is a big day. We'll see how it all turns out.
00:13Hamas agrees to release Israeli hostages but wants to negotiate terms.
00:18We break down where this leaves hopes for peace nearly two years on.
00:24Mark Carney is heading back to Washington.
00:27The Prime Minister is heading once more into the lion's den.
00:30What CBC News has learned about the high-stakes trade talks.
00:36Your Royal Highness.
00:38The Prince of Wales, the Canadian comedian and a promise to change the monarchy.
00:44I think it's safe to say that change is on my agenda. Change for good.
00:49What else was revealed in this unusually personal interview?
00:52From CBC News, this is The National with Christine Birak.
01:00Thank you for joining us.
01:02We begin tonight with breaking news from the Middle East,
01:05where two days before an American deadline,
01:08Hamas has agreed, in part, to Donald Trump's peace plan.
01:12The biggest concession.
01:14Hamas says it is willing to release the remaining hostages.
01:17The sudden revelation met almost immediately with praise by Trump.
01:22The U.S. president saying we are now close to ending this war,
01:26while also stating Israel must immediately stop bombing Gaza.
01:30Tonight, Israel says it's preparing to implement the first stage of the U.S. plan,
01:36but there are still terms to be negotiated.
01:38Paul Hunter is in Jerusalem for us
01:40and takes us through where the hopes for peace stand tonight.
01:44With countless Gazans in abject misery,
01:49the remaining Israeli hostages hidden by Hamas out there somewhere,
01:53and as Israel continued its assault on Hamas in Gaza,
01:57a potential breakthrough, finally.
02:00In a statement from Hamas,
02:01agreement to immediately begin talks toward the release of all hostages alive and dead,
02:08though it also underlined a number of apparent disagreements with the U.S. peace plan put before it,
02:13but said it was ready to negotiate on the details.
02:16This is a big day.
02:18We'll see how it all turns out.
02:20We have to get the final word down in concrete.
02:24From U.S. President Trump,
02:25a clear signal he interprets Hamas' statement as a giant positive.
02:29Posting on his Truth Social platform,
02:31I believe they are ready for a lasting peace.
02:35Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza
02:38so that we can get the hostages out safely and quickly.
02:41Adding,
02:42We are already in discussions on details to be worked out.
02:45This is not about Gaza alone, he writes.
02:48This is about long-sought peace in the Middle East.
02:52But Trump's remarkable demand Israel now stop bombing Gaza
02:58reportedly caught Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by surprise.
03:01His office now saying he'll work with the president to end the war
03:06in accordance with principles set out by Israel.
03:11Netanyahu has faced growing pressure in Israel to end the war,
03:15but his coalition government is backed by right-wing parties
03:19who want no part of any compromise with Hamas.
03:23And yet, it's equally clear Donald Trump is intent on pushing for a way
03:28to end the war and quickly.
03:31Everybody was unified in wanting this war to end
03:35and seeing peace in the Middle East.
03:37And we're very close to achieving that.
03:40Thank you all, and everybody will be treated fairly.
03:43I say some, if somehow steps are now taken,
03:48maybe indeed it grows from there.
03:50If we pass the 72 hours, then we can actually reach a good next step.
03:55But if we don't, then it's going to be, yeah, more hell, more war.
04:0272 hours being the deadline set by Donald Trump
04:05to have all of this resolved, Christine.
04:07Trump's view now, it may happen.
04:11Paul, what are the impediments?
04:13Potentially many.
04:15For one, the politics facing Benjamin Netanyahu
04:19and as well the ability of Hamas, the U.S. and Israel
04:22to now negotiate their way through the details.
04:26Worth noting, for example, that was absent from the Hamas statement
04:30was any mention of Hamas laying down its arms,
04:32one of the demands of the peace deal.
04:35So much work to be done.
04:36The fate of countless Gazans
04:38and the remaining hostages in the balance.
04:42Christine.
04:43Thanks, Paul.
04:43The CBC's Paul Hunter tonight in Jerusalem.
04:47A major update from police in Manchester, England.
04:50They now say two of the victims in yesterday's ramming
04:53and stabbing attack at a local synagogue
04:55were very likely shot by an officer.
04:58They say a pathologist has determined one of the men who died
05:02appears to have a gunshot wound.
05:05The attacker did not have a gun.
05:07They also say one of the people injured was also shot.
05:10Police say both victims were close together behind the synagogue door
05:14trying to keep the attacker out.
05:16Mark Carney is heading back to Washington in a few days
05:20to meet face-to-face with Donald Trump
05:23as tariffs continue to take their toll on Canada.
05:26Kate McKenna with what we know about why this is happening now.
05:31Mark Carney is going back for round two,
05:34a meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House next Tuesday.
05:38Would you like to say a few words?
05:40Thank you, Mr. President.
05:41I'm on the edge of my seat, actually.
05:43It'll be his first since this one in May.
05:46With Donald Trump, you really never know, do you?
05:49I mean, the Prime Minister is heading once more into the lion's den.
05:52Carney is already in a pressure cooker.
05:54We hope the visit and meeting is a great success.
05:58Opposition leader Pierre Polyev is once again calling on Carney
06:01to make good on his commitment to get a new trade deal with the U.S.
06:05Carney had promised that he would have a deal by July 21st.
06:10Here we are in October.
06:11There's no deal, and the American tariffs have doubled
06:16on Canadian industry under Carney's watch.
06:20This trip comes just days after Trump made yet another quip
06:24about Canada joining the United States
06:26while telling American military officials
06:29Canada wants to be part of a missile defence system.
06:32To which I said, well, why don't you just join our country?
06:35You become 51, become the 51st state, and you get it for free.
06:39Canada's point person on U.S. trade says he's optimistic some sort of agreement
06:43can still be reached as industry deals with biting tariffs on the steel,
06:48aluminum, auto, and lumber sectors.
06:50I have lost the illusion that we should predict in precise time when we might get to an agreement.
06:59An agreement can take many different forms.
07:01My view is an agreement is something that would improve the circumstance that we're in today.
07:05Carney has maintained a relationship with Trump, texting, and meeting at international summits.
07:11It's clearly a good thing that Mark Carney and Donald Trump seem to have a good working relationship,
07:16and the tone between them is constructive, positive, and respectful.
07:20But I would say that only goes so far, because Donald Trump believes in what he believes in.
07:25And if there's one thing Donald Trump has made clear he believes in, it's tariffs.
07:30Mark Carney so far hasn't changed the president's mind on that.
07:34Kate, do we know what led to this meeting, or what the federal government is hoping to get out of it?
07:39That is the biggest lingering question, and there are some hints.
07:44Mark Carney will be joined by some of his ministers, including Melanie Jolie in industry,
07:48perhaps signaling that some of the sectoral tariffs could be up for discussion.
07:53A senior government source says Canadian officials see the potential for movement on some of the tariffs,
07:57for instance, on steel and aluminum, but they also underscore there's no deal yet,
08:02and history has shown Trump is unpredictable.
08:06Thanks, Kate. Kate McKenna in Ottawa.
08:08Marine Land is calling on the federal government to provide emergency funding by Tuesday,
08:14or it will be forced to euthanize 30 beluga whales.
08:19The Niagara Falls Amusement Park sent a letter to Ottawa today
08:22after the federal fisheries minister denied permits to export the whales.
08:27A theme park in China was considering purchasing the mammals,
08:31but the minister said she didn't want them used for entertainment any longer.
08:36More than a week into a strike that has paralyzed mail delivery across this country,
08:42Canada Post has submitted a new contract offer.
08:45The union president's frustrated response, why did they bother?
08:50Olivia Stefanovic now on where this leaves the strike,
08:53and Canadians waiting for their mail.
08:55For Linda Butcher, Canada Post is more than a mail carrier.
09:00When we've had bad winters and seniors are not going out,
09:04sometimes neighbors notice it,
09:06but the postman is the one who actually comes to the door every day.
09:09A lifeline for her and many others who still rely on written communication.
09:14The senior population is really being left behind,
09:21especially when it comes to technology.
09:24The nationwide postal strike also holding up voter registration cards
09:28and candidates flyers in municipal elections.
09:32We ultimately decided to go with a third party if it's needed,
09:37just because of the lack of reliability with Canada Post.
09:40As postal workers enter their second week on the picket line,
09:46Canada Post has made a new contract offer.
09:48It means we're going to be a smaller organization,
09:51and we're going to be leaner, but we can still provide a good service.
09:54The proposal includes many of the same terms presented before,
09:58notably this time without a signing bonus.
10:01We have to put forward offers that we can afford.
10:05That offer comes as the federal government demands an overhaul,
10:09directing Canada Post to end door-to-door service where it still exists,
10:14allow for slower delivery, and close some rural post offices.
10:19This is a really serious time for Canada Post.
10:21The corporation's been losing $10 million a day.
10:24We are on strike until something breaks.
10:29The Canadian Union of Postal Workers says
10:31it will likely make a decision by mid-next week.
10:34They put in things that are poison pills that we will never agree to,
10:39and Canada Post knows it.
10:41The union says it expected improvements,
10:44but instead calls what's on the table worse than what Canada Post previously offered,
10:49and what postal workers overwhelmingly rejected in a vote two months ago.
10:53Olivia Stevanovic, CBC News, Ottawa.
10:58Voters in Yukon will head to the polls next month.
11:01The Liberals are looking to stay in power,
11:04but they're facing challenges from the New Democrats and the opposition Yukon Party.
11:09Electoral reform is also on the ballot.
11:11Voters will be asked whether they want to keep the current first-past-the-post system
11:15or switch to a ranked-choice voting system.
11:19A glitch that temporarily knocked out CBSA inspection kiosks on Sunday
11:24is still causing delays at the border.
11:26On Thursday, kiosks at some airports were also down.
11:30And as Chris Ensing shows us,
11:32the disruption has affected not only air travellers,
11:35but also truckers and cross-border trade.
11:38The trucks are moving again,
11:42but the IT outage that paralysed the Canada Border Service Agency this week
11:47was another shock to Canada's cross-border traffic.
11:50It seems to be happening more frequently,
11:52more than it was before anyways.
11:54Yves Duran tried to return to Ontario Wednesday night,
11:57but was stuck in his truck at a rest stop for more than 30 hours.
12:02They were letting maybe 10, 15, 20 trucks at a time go through,
12:07and they would just process it manually.
12:10CBSA staff couldn't process electronic forms because of a system outage.
12:14Officials say it started Sunday following routine maintenance.
12:18Even after it came back online, there was a second outage on Thursday,
12:22creating delays at airports across the country,
12:25while backlog from Sunday's outage continued.
12:28This week, drivers waited up to five hours crossing into Canada for Manitoba,
12:32eight hours in Michigan, and up to 36 hours in New York.
12:36More than $3 billion in goods and services
12:39crossed between the two countries every day.
12:42At the mercy of the system,
12:44Canadian trucking companies say is old, unreliable, and needs to be fixed.
12:49The level of frustration in the industry has been growing,
12:52I would say, the last two to three years.
12:54The public safety minister has ordered the CBSA
12:56to deliver a report on the outage in 30 days
12:59that includes a plan to prevent future outages.
13:02Investing in the IT that facilitates Canada-U.S. trade by truck
13:07is a nation-building exercise.
13:09It's just not as sexy as some of the others.
13:12Duran is now heading home to New Brunswick.
13:14I probably won't be home until Saturday evening.
13:19Then it's back on the road, hoping it's free of glitches
13:22that waste both money and precious time with family.
13:26Chris Hensing, CBC News, Windsor.
13:28For the second time in 24 hours, Munich's airport was shut down
13:33after sightings of unidentified drones.
13:36The airport called her precautionary measure.
13:39It comes after drones were seen in both Belgian and German airspace,
13:43including over Munich airport,
13:45prompting a long shutdown overnight Thursday,
13:47grounding or diverting dozens of flights.
13:50Mysterious drones have been sighted in recent months
13:53over at least 10 European countries.
13:55Russia has denied accusations that it's behind them.
14:01Sean Diddy Combs has been sentenced to more than four years in prison.
14:05The former music mogul was convicted in July
14:08on prostitution-related offences.
14:10Chris Reyes was in the New York court today
14:13as Combs begged the judge for mercy.
14:17The mother of Sean Diddy Combs
14:19waved to supporters outside of the New York courthouse.
14:22Moments after her son was sentenced to 50 months in prison
14:26for prostitution-related charges
14:29in connection to drug-fueled sex parties
14:31known as freak-offs involving his ex-girlfriends.
14:35Combs' lawyer said they will appeal.
14:38It is really a sad day for everybody.
14:41I don't feel that way.
14:43I feel just that he should be released now.
14:46Mr. Combs should be home.
14:49After an eight-week trial,
14:51Combs was acquitted of the more serious charges
14:53of sex trafficking and racketeering.
14:56In his first time speaking in court,
14:58Combs delivered an emotional statement,
15:01expressing remorse and regret over his actions
15:03that he called disgusting, despicable, shameful, and sick
15:07and saying,
15:09I'm just a human being.
15:11I got lost in my excess and my ego.
15:13I beg your honor for mercy.
15:16The defense painted Combs as a loving father,
15:20presenting this video.
15:21His children also tearfully begged the court for leniency.
15:25But the judge said he wanted to send a message
15:27to abusers and victims alike
15:29that abuse against women is met with real accountability.
15:34So the judge was not overly swayed by Sean Combs' celebrity,
15:38by his history,
15:41or really by the very seemingly heartfelt testimony
15:45he put out there.
15:46The judge ruled the evidence of abuse and violence
15:49presented during the trial,
15:50including video of the savage beating of Cassie Ventura
15:54in a hotel hallway,
15:55called for a more substantial sentence
15:57than the 14 months requested by the defense.
16:01The prosecution asked for 11 years.
16:04Ventura's lawyer responded with a statement.
16:06While nothing can undo the trauma caused by Combs,
16:09the sentence imposed today recognizes the impact
16:12of the serious offenses he committed.
16:15In his final words,
16:17the judge told Combs that he now has the chance
16:19to show the world what real accountability
16:21and healing look like.
16:23And Chris, you were in the court
16:25as Combs delivered his statement?
16:27That's right.
16:27I was in the overflow room full of Diddy supporters.
16:31Many of them were in tears as he delivered his statement.
16:34In fact, security had to pass around a box of tissues.
16:37The woman behind me kept yelling out,
16:39Diddy, we believe you.
16:41Harlem needs you.
16:42The Bronx needs you.
16:43Which really speaks to his roots here in New York City.
16:45This is a man, Christine, who has lost his money,
16:49his career, his fame,
16:50but obviously not the support of many of his family,
16:53friends and community members.
16:54All of them believe that he deserves a second chance.
16:57You really got that sense in court today.
17:00All right.
17:00Thanks, Chris.
17:01Chris Reyes in New York tonight.
17:04For the first time in its 1,400-year history,
17:07a woman will lead the Church of England.
17:10As a church, we have to often fail to recognize
17:14or take seriously the misuse of power in all its forms.
17:19Sarah Mullally was named the next Archbishop of Canterbury,
17:24making her the spiritual leader
17:25of more than 80 million Anglicans around the world.
17:28The former nurse takes on the role
17:31after her predecessor resigned
17:33over his handling of an abuse scandal.
17:36Prince William is signaling even more change to come,
17:40this time to the monarchy.
17:42As Alexander Kwan explains,
17:44he opened up about his personal life
17:46and his future in an interview with Eugene Levy.
17:51It's not how you'd expect to see the future king
17:54enter Windsor Castle.
17:56But it set the stage for an unusual interview.
17:59Prince William with Canadian actor Eugene Levy
18:02on his travel show on Apple TV+.
18:04Eugene, good morning.
18:07Your Royal Highness.
18:09William opened up about his private life
18:11following cancer diagnoses for both his wife and father
18:15and signaled he plans to make changes to the monarchy
18:18when he becomes king.
18:20I think it's safe to say that change is on my agenda.
18:24Change for good.
18:24And I embrace that and I enjoy that change.
18:27I don't fear it.
18:29But no specifics.
18:31It's actually a very smart way to talk about change.
18:34It's a very safe way to talk about it.
18:36So it signals to everyone who may be around his age or younger
18:39that, yes, of course, the monarch is here to stay.
18:42Royal watchers say even this much is a shift.
18:45This is kind of the behind the scenes that he keeps so private.
18:50She says the palace made a deliberate choice to do an interview in this format.
18:55It was fun just having them sit down and have a pint together.
18:59And it just shows how relaxed William is in his role
19:04and that he might be a future king, but he is just like everyone else.
19:10Levy admits it was by no means a hard-hitting interrogation.
19:14To me, it was more a conversation.
19:19You know, I wasn't thinking of it in my own mind as, you know, any kind of, you know, scoop.
19:25But it showed a more human side of the Prince of Wales.
19:28And our experts agree it could be a sign of a more transparent monarchy in the years to come.
19:35Alexander Kwan, CBC News, Regina.
19:38Taylor Swift could soon have the world's top album and the world's top movie.
19:44I think the people that love Taylor probably just can't get enough of her.
19:49The pop icon's impressive double debut.
19:54The Yankees are coming to town and Jays fans are ready.
19:58It's Canada's team. It's the pride that we take.
20:01How they're prepping ahead of Game 1.
20:09And a TLC cover takes a turn.
20:17We're back in 2.
20:19This large fire erupted after an explosion at a Chevron oil refinery near Los Angeles.
20:33The facility supplies a good portion of the vehicle and jet fuel for Southern California.
20:39The company says no injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.
20:44Swifties around the world are celebrating a brand new album from the pop superstar.
20:51But it's not just new songs.
20:53There is a movie to go along with it.
20:55Jennifer LaGrassa shows us the marketing strategy behind taking music to the big screen.
21:01Glitter and friendship bracelets.
21:04My bracelets I've done up.
21:05Swifties have descended on theaters for the world premiere of Taylor Swift's new music video and exclusive behind-the-scenes content.
21:12Hey, it's Taylor. I want to invite you to the official release party of a showgirl.
21:17The theatrical event follows the release of Swift's highly anticipated 12th studio album.
21:25The life of a showgirl dropped at midnight and true Swifties have already devoured it.
21:30I've listened to the album a few times already.
21:32I love it.
21:33I already like memorised some lyrics.
21:36I already have some favourites.
21:37Swift says the album reflects her life during her wildly popular Eras Tour,
21:42which wrapped last year in Vancouver after more than 150 shows.
21:46This rollout is iconic.
21:49Experts say turning an album release into a weekend-long party is Swift marketing at its best.
21:55You literally feel, as a Swifty, you're one of her besties.
21:59The fans love it.
