00:00I can't think of a better time for Grandy's Grades than a victory Friday, and that's what we got right now.
00:05As always, we begin with the quarterback position. This is an easy one.
00:10Mac Jones, he was flawless, and he gets my first A-plus of the year, an A-plus for Mac Jones.
00:16A-plus. Yeah, strong. I don't give A-pluses. I don't believe in them, but you're right, and I just gave him a straight-up A.
00:24He did everything. He almost threw a pick, but it doesn't count because they didn't catch it.
00:29Otherwise, he was spectacular.
00:30Which one are you thinking of when you say he almost threw a pick?
00:33I don't even remember one that looked like it was going to get picked.
00:35It was late, late in the game, and I mean, it wasn't straight to the guy, but it was one where they got hands on it.
00:43Was it an overtime? Pressured and hit. Good block there. Yeah, I'll get back to you.
00:50Okay. I'll get back to you. I'll find it.
00:53Anyway, yeah, I'll give him an A-2.
00:55It was right before the 59-yard field goal.
00:57Okay, okay.
00:58I'm 30-10. Whatever.
00:59Yeah, I just, like, I'm going to give him an A-2.
01:01I don't know.
01:03Anything that you might have seen on the field that didn't look great, like, for instance,
01:09watching him crumble that time that he got sacked, and it was a very, very poor time to take a sack,
01:15anything that you saw out there that you didn't like, to me, is totally overwhelmed by the toughness he displayed,
01:23by the moxie that he displayed.
01:25But there also wasn't really a whole lot to not like.
01:28He was accurate.
01:29He made wonderful decisions.
01:31He moved the team.
01:33It wasn't, you know, dynamic.
01:36Certainly not in the second half.
01:37But I don't know how you can't come away inspired by Mac Jones last night.
01:42Yeah, toughness.
01:43He definitely seems to be underrated toughness.
01:45Up next is skill positions, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends.
01:50This group was also really good once again.
01:53Not a very successful day on the ground.
01:55Maybe a little bit more so in the first half.
01:56Not as much in the second half.
01:58But McCaffrey, I mean, he was awesome again in this one.
02:01Kendrick Bourne off the street for a career-high 142 yards.
02:06Jake Tonjes with another touchdown.
02:08Demarcus Robinson, a few big catches.
02:11They were very, very good in this one.
02:13I gave the skill positions an A for their performance.
02:16I am going to go A- for one annoying little reason.
02:19One tiny, teeny, tiny reason I share everything that you just said.
02:23I loved almost everything about it.
02:26Demarcus Robinson, underrated.
02:28I really think he's going to have an impact with the Niners throughout the entire year.
02:33And Kendrick Bourne was dynamic.
02:35But we get an A- because, once again, Granny, how many points did he get in your fantasy league?
02:4027.
02:4027.
02:41He should have had 28 and a half.
02:44One drop.
02:45Dude, squeeze the orange.
02:48One drop, yeah.
02:48But we're coming off of a three drop, and you had another drop, and it was a big one at the time.
02:54Third and five.
02:55Squeeze the orange.
02:57Great, great game.
02:59But squeeze the orange.
03:01A-.
03:01One drop is not going to take me from an A to an A-.
03:04I give them an A.
03:06And, you know, McCaffrey made some big plays, even though they can't really run it.
03:09Tonjes again in the end zone.
03:11I'm glad you said that about Brian Robinson.
03:13I'm sorry, Demarcus Robinson, because he had a huge block in overtime on a CMC play.
03:20And that, to me, counts for the skill guys.
03:22He was able to get Christian down the right sideline, set him up for a field goal.
03:26They get an A for me, Grandy.
03:27All right.
03:27Up next is the offensive line.
03:29I thought this was one of their better performances of the year, going up against the best defensive line, maybe in the entire NFL, certainly, that they've faced so far this year.
03:38Not a lot of running room in the second half.
03:40And in the second half, Mack was pressured often and very quickly.
03:44I think the only one sack by the Rams was more to do with Shanahan and the game plan as opposed to the offensive line.
03:52But still, they held up much better than expected.
03:54They got a B-plus for what they did yesterday.
03:56I gave them a B-minus, a couple of penalties, you had some illegal procedure, a couple of false starts, McKivitts with a hold, and they still can't really run it.
04:05And poor Mack Jones was absolutely beleaguered.
04:09There were a couple where Trent just straight-up missed on verse.
04:12Verse got him with a little wiggle move, and Trent's like, uh, sorry, Mack, it's coming.
04:17B-minus might be too harsh, but that's what I went with.
04:19Yeah, I'm going to stick with B-plus along with you, Grandy.
04:22I thought Trent Williams played pretty well last night.
04:24And here's the bottom line, I look at Mora as a collective, they have got an immobile quarterback who became even more immobile as the game wore on because of his leg, and they allowed one sack.
04:36That's impressive.
04:37They can't get an A because we still can't run the ball.
04:40But the bottom line is, they kept Mack upright enough in a really tough situation against a great defensive line.
04:48And I go B-plus.
04:48Let's move over to the defensive side of the ball.
04:50The front seven, the down linemen, and the linebacking group.
04:53This was a group that I think got outplayed for the most part in this game.
04:57Kyron Williams averaged four and a half per carry.
05:00The Rams as a team averaged five per carry.
05:03And there was not a lot of pressure on Matthew Stafford other than that one sack by Huff very early in the game.
05:10They didn't really impact Stafford the rest of the way.
05:12But maybe the biggest play of the game, Alfred Collins punching the ball free and recovering it, that takes this from an okay grade to a good grade.
05:20Front seven gets a B, and carrying the heavyweight is that one play by Alfred Collins.
05:24Yeah, and I'm going to move it up to a B-plus just because I'm going to give that group, and I know it was a whole team thing,
05:28but I'm going to give them credit for the play that won them the game on fourth and one.
05:33They get a run play, and they were there to make the play and stuff them and pull the unlikely victory out.
05:39So I share that with you, but I don't really downgrade them for the difficult pass rush because they are so hampered.
05:46It's not even just Bosa anymore.
05:48Kalia Davis goes out in the game.
05:50The injuries are killing them right now, and they somehow, someway are still making enough plays.
05:57They need reinforcements, but I'm giving them a B for the effort last night.
06:02And I notch them down to a B-minus because of a lot of the things you guys are saying.
06:06There was literally no pass rush unless they blitzed.
06:10You had four guys who were just kind of loitering.
06:13It's like teenagers at a 7-11 on a Friday night.
06:18You don't really have anywhere to go, so you're just four dudes hanging out.
06:21The run game for the Rams was not that potent, but by and large, you've got to help your secondary with a little bit more heat on the QB.
06:29And the punch-out play was gigantic, which moved it into B territory, but I give them a B-minus.
06:35Rest of the defense, the secondary, kind of similar to the front seven.
06:39Honestly, they got beat often in the second half.
06:41Devontae, Puka, Tutu Atwell got behind them a few times.
06:45A great pass breakup by Demo in the fourth quarter.
06:49That might have been an overtime against Tutu Atwell.
06:51Whenever it was, it was late in the game, and it was a big moment.
06:53But, Dibs, you pointed out the Chase Lucas play on that fourth and one before Demo and Segal came in there to close it off.
07:02I thought that this was much like the front seven, a group that was outplayed for the majority of this game.
07:07But when it mattered most, they came through.
07:09They also got a B from me.
07:10You still can't get an interception.
07:12And you mentioned some of the big plays.
07:15Atwell goes for 38.
07:16Lenore with the pass breakup.
07:18A couple of holds for Demo as well.
07:20And there were some times where Segal was getting picked on.
07:23By and large, they came through huge in the last play.
07:26Those were secondary members.
07:28I had them as a B-.
07:29I'm going B because I keep looking at these situations and go, wait a minute, guys.
07:34What about the assignment?
07:36They're being asked to do more than is really possible.
07:39Upton Stout got pulled from this game.
07:41They do not have a pass rush to help them out.
07:44And they have a Hall of Fame receiver and a probable another Hall of Fame receiver with a Hall of Fame quarterback running around out there.
07:49This is not something that people can do.
07:51That's not an assignment you can do.
07:54So, the fact that they were able to make a couple plays here and there with a not doable assignment, I'm going to give you a B.
08:01Fair enough.
08:02Up next is special teams.
08:04They go from an F last week to an A.
08:07This week, Eddie Pinheiro made four field goals, including a 59-yarder career high.
08:14I was shocked they even trotted him out there for that attempt.
08:17He was awesome in this one.
08:18There was one touchback.
08:20And then Skymore and Garendo.
08:24I'm scared every time they touch the ball on kickoff return.
08:27It was the unique knuckleball kick that the Rams do.
08:31Skymore could not, for the life of him, figure it out.
08:34So, that's why it's not an A-plus for me, because of those issues.
08:37I give them an A also, just because, given them their comparison piece, the Rams made all the special teams' mistakes.
08:43And you see how it loses a game.
08:44Extra point block.
08:46Field goal missed.
08:47And their knuckleball kick that came up short late.
08:49That set up the 49ers with a really, really short field at the 40-yard line.
08:54So, yeah, A for these special teams.
08:56Yeah, A-minus.
08:56And you highlighted the drawbacks.
08:58And that short kick was actually overtime.
09:00So, the Niners were in great shape.
09:02And they also held on that punt when the Niners had to kick out of their own end zone.
09:05The Rams were the hold that backed them up.
09:08It's the Skymore-Garendo experience.
09:10Garendo fumbled.
09:11And he is fortunate that they ruled forward progress and they blew it dead.
09:15But great job by the special teams.
09:18They were huge, but I can't give them a straight A.
09:20They get a minus.
09:21Fair enough.
09:21And last but not least is coaching.
09:24An amazing, amazing job coaching today.
09:27This would be an A+.
09:29It's just an A for me.
09:30A couple of things I was a little frustrated by.
09:34Third and one from near midfield.
09:36First play of the fourth quarter.
09:37They just run it with McCaffrey despite having no room on the ground all game long.
09:41They lose three yards on that play.
09:43That one seemed a little confusing to me.
09:45And then off the shadow of the goal line from the one, they hand it off to Kyle Juszczyk.
09:50And they lose a yard.
09:51Next play, Mack gets hurt.
09:53And they have to settle for a field goal.
09:54I thought we could have seen some more creativity there.
09:57Other than that, though, Shanahan was in his bag all game.
10:00We know what Sala does defensively.
10:02Coaching gets an A.
10:02Yeah, an A.
10:03Absolute A.
10:04And you mentioned all the high points.
10:06And I'm not so bothered by the play calls.
10:08Because you can't run it.
10:09So, you know what?
10:09Juszczyk, you give it a shot.
10:11See if we can sneak in with the fullback.
10:13It didn't work, but I thought it was a master class.
10:16And he did a lot, too, with his timeouts early in the game where they were clearly confused out there.
10:21And he burned them as opposed to taking penalties.
10:23Great job by the coaches.
10:24Unbelievable A.
10:25How is this team 4-1?
10:27Right.
10:27That's it.
10:27A.
10:28How is this team 4-1?
10:31That's a great question.
10:32Yeah.
10:32That's it.
10:34All right.
10:34Grandy's grades, all right?
10:35Grandy's grades.
10:36Not a C in the group, I don't think.
10:38That's correct.
10:39No.
10:39Yeah.
10:39Yeah.
10:39Yeah.
