Women’s World Cup: South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt said that the Proteas will look to bounce back after their 10-wicket defeat to England in Guwahati on October 3.
00:00Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Proteus Women's post-match present.
00:05We've got the Captain Laura Bolfaji at the top of the table.
00:08Please use your hands and we'll bring the mic over to you.
00:11It's for the gentleman up front.
00:14Hello.
00:16Do you have a very good morning on Lozda toss?
00:21Sorry, what was the second bar?
00:23Do you have a very good morning on Lozda toss?
00:26Oh, the toss?
00:28No, I wouldn't put it down to the toss.
00:31I think they did bowl very well.
00:33I think there was a lot of swing around early.
00:35I think Lindsay Smith was excellent with the new ball.
00:38I think it was just one of those days with the bat where top order failed and middle order failed on the same day.
00:44So, yeah, not the ideal way to start the tournament.
00:47But I do think that we have shown some resilience with the bat in the last 18 months.
00:52And I'm sure that we will bounce back and come back better in the rest of this competition.
00:57Hi, Rana.
00:58Hi.
00:59Very tough luck today.
01:00But if the score would have been 69, 169 instead of 69, I might not be asking that question.
01:09But again, the score is 69.
01:10I'm asking this.
01:11Can you say that your preparation, according to the Indian situation and Indian, which is not complete or there is a lot of work to be done because we know a World Cup in the score like this in the first match, it has been much more disappointing.
01:28Yeah.
01:29No, I think our prep has been good.
01:31I think we, I don't think there were too many demons in that pitch.
01:36I think it was just one of those days where everyone went out early.
01:39And I think that happens in cricket sometimes.
01:41I think if you look at the way that they batted, the wicket was all right.
01:45It's not a wicket that we were super foreign to.
01:48I think we spent a lot of time in these conditions the last couple of months.
01:52So definitely wouldn't put it on the wicket.
01:55I think we are much, much better than 69 all out.
01:59So yeah, just one of those days.
02:01Yeah, I think as a group, we just need to put it behind us as quick as we can and move forward because if we're going to take that into the next game, it's going to be a very long tournament for us.
02:10Yesterday you talked about the game against the spin.
02:15You have to walk on it.
02:16Sri Lanka, Pakistan, again in India.
02:19The problems with the spin still continue.
02:23In the last T20i against Pakistan, you gave six wickets to left-hand spin.
02:29Again, today there was some problems.
02:31So what's your thought on that?
02:33I think those were two quite different spinners.
02:37I think Smith was very good with her swing and her drift today.
02:41Whereas Sandhu in that game sort of got a lot of turn out of the wicket.
02:45So very different conditions.
02:47Yeah, I think in that game, the Pakistan game, we probably didn't adapt well to a turning wicket.
02:53Probably a lot more turning than what we were used to.
02:56Very out of our comfort zone conditions wise.
02:58Whereas today, I would say it was just a total collapse.
03:01Just didn't apply ourselves well enough with the bat.
03:05Hi, a couple from me.
03:08Firstly, South Africa's openers have been tremendous for the last, say, two years or so.
03:14But has that kind of masked the kind of lower scores or inconsistency of the middle order,
03:20which was kind of exposed today?
03:22Because was it about just spinners today?
03:24I think our middle order has actually been better this year than they've ever been.
03:28I think the likes of Sunay, Marazan, Chloe, Dirksen, who didn't play today, have really been scoring a lot of runs throughout the past few series.
03:37So yeah, I think, yeah, it's just one of those days.
03:41I don't think that we have any trouble in our middle order at the moment.
03:45It's just one of those days where both top order and middle order didn't fire.
03:50And during training specifically yesterday, I saw your batting coach, Abraham's, you know, working a lot with,
03:57specifically you, even Tasmic Nets for that matter, with left arm spin.
04:01And I spotted him instruct a couple of net bowlers to, like, go wide up the crease, etc.
04:07Yeah, so what, can you, like, tell us about what the objective was specifically in those drills?
04:12And because it was left arm spin and because it was left arm spin that prepared you today, what was, like,
04:17some insight on that?
04:19Yeah, so you can't really fault our preparation.
04:22I think we try to cover all bases in training.
04:25Yesterday, me personally, I was super specific in my training.
04:28I had someone throw like Lauren Bell would throw, and I had the left armor throwing at me,
04:32and I'd already planned which guard I would take and what my options were and what my strong options were.
04:36So, to have that soft dismissal today was very disappointing with all the preparation that we had put in.
04:41So, yeah, it's definitely not a lack of prep.
04:44I think we've been very well informed by all of our coaches.
04:47I think our plans were decent as well.
04:50It's just one of those days where we played the wrong line for the ball swinging and so.
04:56Hi, Pratnam, Zahika here.
04:58Hard luck.
04:59And like you mentioned in the very first answer that you allowed the team to make 69 all out.
05:04So, how would you like to take the team forward in this tournament?
05:08Because I believe for every women across the globe, the ICC Women World Cup is a very, very fusion
05:14and a great platform to perform.
05:16And take the cup home to prove it and that you can make a career in cricket
05:21and inspire a lot of young girls back home, the factors that I have to do.
05:25So, how would you like to take the team forward after this loss?
05:29Definitely, I think this tournament is massive for us as a team.
05:33The opportunity that we have to possibly make semis in the final and win a tournament like this
05:38is absolutely amazing for all those young girls back at home to see us play on the global stage.
05:42Obviously not the way we would have liked to start today.
05:45But like I said, I think we need to just park this game as quickly as we can.
05:50I think each and every one of us know that we are much better than 69 all out.
05:54I think, yeah, we individually want to score more than 69.
05:58So, it's just a day that we need to forget as quickly as we can and really move on and keep doing our processes,
06:05keep sticking up to our preparation for the next game.
06:08So, Lora, this is a long tournament and the format is round-robin.
06:12So, is that a confident factor looking ahead?
06:15Yeah, definitely.
06:17I think that's the one nice thing knowing is that we still have six other games to play.
06:21Still a lot of time to rectify it.
06:23Obviously, you want to start the tournament with a win.
06:26It's never nice losing your first game.
06:28But I think with a game like this, just parking it and moving forward as quickly as you can
06:32onto that New Zealand game is what we're going to have to do.
06:35Do you think the spin, looking into things so far, the spin could play a significant role in the World Cup?
06:42Definitely, in these conditions.
06:44The spin will be massive.
06:46We knew that coming into this, that's why we've put in a lot of prep in subcontinent
06:50and facing a lot of spin at home and talking about a lot of different options and plans.
06:54Didn't play well enough today.
06:57They balled really well, so hopefully next game we can be a lot better.
