01:54It's a black Audi A4.
01:5510 miles north of Derby.
01:57Sergeant Scott Riley is racing to catch up with a repeat offender.
02:00Yes, yes.
02:01So we've got the report of a drink driver who got good information as to where he is.
02:05repeat offender this report of a drink driver we've got good information as to
02:14areas so I'm going to try and intercept him I'm quite keen to get this one so
02:20now is a band driver and therefore any update yes just those individuals that
02:33are repeat offending are taking nearly all of the police's time you're dealing with the same
02:39people that are still drink driving the year after the mid-court drink driving or even sometimes two
02:45or three days after the mid-court drink driving police are dealing with those same individuals
02:49time and time again it should come straight on top of me contact contact with that vehicle held at
03:01large when you are dealing with an offender like this who's been through the system a lot is already
03:07banned from driving for drink driving and failing to stop the likelihood is is going to fail to stop
03:14again I'm going to go for a compliance stop and if that doesn't work have a colleague to deploy stinger
03:20and it is a offside indication I know he knows I'm behind him be aware he's dragging around yes
03:29speed slightly increasing both of our speeds increase simultaneously position for the
03:35offside and it's left left left back towards where it's come from and a 10-0-0-4 vehicles failing to stop
03:44failing to stop the RAs are low at this time can I have a stinger please
03:52the RAs are high the RAs are high this a crash crash it's a crash crash
04:00Chris look after the member of the public
04:07yeah it's a total loss it's a total loss I do now know that he'll do anything to get away so my
04:24motivation levels to catch this offender have just gone through the roof and there is nothing
04:31I want more than to catch him there's going to be quite some substantial damage to that vehicle
04:36is that driver okay Chris
04:40thank god there's no interest to the member of the public
04:48where has he gone
04:51where has he gone
04:58as Scott continues searching for the driver control updates
05:06a vehicle has crashed through some fences into the garden
05:09yeah we've also had a call saying they've heard a big crash and the driver was running off
05:18when he got to the top of the road he ran down the estate
05:21I believe he's just headed westbound description of Turkish or Asian six foot tall and black t-shirt
05:29I think we were nearly there you know I think we went down it
05:34the car's now been found abandoned in somebody's garden
05:41oh I never saw it
05:46I've driven straight past that that's why I've not seen it it's in the garden
05:52may no wonder because I just went straight off
05:55he's got black trousers yeah
05:59yeah we're beard short black in and which way did he go walk straight that way okay
06:05all right
06:13say that pal
06:22say it pal
06:25my arm's out
06:26what's going on
06:27you just match the description of somebody that I'm looking for all right
06:30just stop there
06:32yes yes one male detained
06:34down from where you were
06:36no you're not resisting mate it's all good
06:38you're under arrest
06:39submitting drink driving
06:40failing to stop at the scene of an accident
06:42and dangerous driving
06:43you do not have to say anything but it may harm your friend to not make sure when questioning
06:46something which you later are in court
06:49colleagues arrive as backup
06:51it's really important for your safety if you've got any injuries
06:54injuries from what
06:55from the high-speed crash that you've just been in
06:57no I'm not interviewing you what I'm saying is if you need an ambulance
07:06now is the time to tell me
07:08if you feel that you need taken to hospital for any injuries that I cannot see
07:13now is the time to tell me
07:15that that's not admitting guilt that's just telling me that you need some medical attention
07:18I'm not interviewing you here and now we're going to get you in the car
07:23all right
07:24what you had
07:25Lee's the member of the public's not injured
07:27with the suspect on his way to custody
07:30that is an excellent resort
07:32Scott heads back to the crash scene
07:34I'm so glad we've got him
07:36the damage that is caused to this person's property
07:39the damage that is caused to that member of the public's car
07:42all started from an incident where it's probably caused some harm
07:46so it's it's a really pleasing result for me
07:49I'm now interested to see what this car's going to look like
07:54the accidents happen just up there in them roadworks
07:57and the skid mark has come all the way across here
08:00so literally it's been out of control all the way down here
08:03see it from here
08:04in fact you can see it all the way
08:06that tyre mark
08:10well that's a really massive impact
08:12straight through this concrete fence
08:14fortunately it's missed the house
08:16it's fortunate where it's hit that member of the public
08:20it's engine block to engine block
08:22if that had been an impact straight into the side
08:24that could have killed that member of the public
08:26if it had not been wearing a seatbelt
08:28he'd have easily killed himself
08:29it's ridiculous
08:30and it really frustrates me
08:33of course
08:34it's all totally unnecessary
08:37custody for us
08:39in terms of dangerous driving
08:44to get away from the police
08:46that's one of the worst that I've seen
08:48he could have killed somebody there quite easily
08:50we need to do everything we can do now
08:53to stop him being released
08:55and stop him being allowed to drive the vehicle again
09:04coming up
09:05you must be
09:07Darvish's most unluckiest criminal
09:09I've got a criminal
09:11back at custody
09:13an ambulance has been called
09:15there's a medical emergency
09:19have you had a drink tonight chap?
09:21no mate
09:22at least that's something
09:23I guess that's something
09:24and a wanted suspect
09:26put me in the cello at night
09:27for what?
09:28for what?
09:29for what?
09:30won't come quietly
09:31I ain't done no wrong
09:32I'm not no criminal
09:33any sudden movements
09:34let's do it now
09:35let's do it now
09:36listen to what I'm going to say to you
09:52I'm further arresting you for disqualified driving
09:55there's not any proof
09:56I've actually found out that you're disqualified now
09:58so we'll just interview you about the driving later
10:00there's no proof though is there?
10:01I'm not going to interview you here and now
10:03it's not for me to interview you now
10:06that's what interviews are for
10:08when you've got a solicitor later
10:10I'll get somebody now
10:11from the night shift
10:12Sergeant Scott Riley is dealing with the driver
10:14suspected of failing to stop
10:16the RAs are high
10:18the RAs are high
10:19this a crash crash
10:20and crashed into a garden
10:22so now I've got a lot of work to do
10:25I've got half an hour of my shift left
10:27and in that time I've got to
10:28hand the job over to the next sergeant
10:30that's coming on
10:31then I've got to do my arrest statement
10:32get all the paperwork sorted
10:34I've got to download all the videos
10:36from my police vehicle
10:37because that will be needed for evidence
10:39download my body-worn video
10:41so I'll just go and crack on and do it
10:43while Scott prepares his report
10:45I do chap alright
10:47traffic officer Craig Dawes is starting a day shift
10:50and is booking in the suspect
10:52I'm not going to
10:54just hit us there pal
10:55we'll have a seat to you
10:56I've tried staying out of trouble
10:57I've tried staying out of trouble
10:58but
10:59two weeks in a row now
11:00I've been here
11:01someone reported me for drink driving
11:02last week
11:03and
11:04I was sat at home
11:05I'm in a good boy
11:07I'm on the suspended sentence
11:12it's what I didn't do
11:14you're unlucky you are aren't you
11:16you must be
11:17Darvish's most unluckiest criminal
11:20I'm not a criminal
11:25just surprised me how cocky he is
11:27his kind of carefree attitude
11:28that he's not bothered of what he's just done
11:31or
11:32what he's caused
11:33or
11:34the risks he's taken
11:35it just appeared to be a game to him
11:37and you know
11:38in his opinion
11:39he was going to be home in a few hours
11:40he'd done nothing wrong
11:41quite shocking
11:48failed to stop
11:49dangerous driving
11:50leaving scene of an accident
11:52and section 4
11:53unthicked
11:54through drink or drugs
11:55and disqualified driving
11:57I've heard the officer's explanation
11:58as to why you're here
11:59in a minute
12:00did you have any principal
12:01ulcer injuries
12:02they've got pain
12:03inside your chest?
12:04common
12:05huh
12:06make sure you did
12:07yeah
12:08no
12:09no
12:10it was clear to see
12:11that he'd got injuries
12:12what coincided with
12:14you know
12:15being inside a car
12:17when it had crashed
12:18but he was adamant
12:19that he'd not been in any car
12:20he'd not been in any crash
12:22not calling?
12:23not yet
12:24no
12:25no
12:26no
12:27no
12:28no
12:29no
12:30no
12:31no
12:32have you done one of these before?
12:33yes
12:34yeah
12:35so you know you're going in the red animal
12:36on the middle there
12:37or
12:38I got banned when I was 17
12:40a week before me test
12:42drink
12:43I got done for a drink drive
12:44and I've loved one drinking drinking
12:45thank you
12:46ok then pal
12:47alright then
12:48come over stand up next to me
12:51keep going
12:52keep going
12:53keep going
12:54keep going
12:55keep going
12:56nice one mate
12:57take a seat
12:58beautiful
12:5959.54
13:00what
13:01are you disappointed on that one?
13:02yeah
13:03normally it's high 90s
13:04that's
13:05that's quite a bad
13:0659
13:0959
13:1154
13:12the legal limit for a drink drive is 35
13:15as a fourth week prosecutor of 14 and above
13:17so it's still well over
13:19and it's been some time since he's been arrested
13:21as he says he's had several pints bottle of rum and stuff
13:24he's been quite open with that
13:29obviously speaking to him and er
13:31having some interaction with him he's spent some time in custody for driving offences so
13:36he knows the score
13:38my worry because he's so laid back and so cocky with this is is he going to carry on doing it
13:43at some point he's either going to kill himself or kill somebody else
13:46and that's my concern
13:52if you don't mind
13:54tea
13:55two sugars
13:56a cup of water
13:57biscuits
13:58and a chicken curry
13:59chicken curry
14:00get somebody who's been in three four five six seven times
14:04they don't care
14:05they've got nothing to lose
14:06you know it's a day in the office for them
14:07and it is quite sad to see that state of affairs
14:15the er
14:16suspected driver
14:17has now
14:18said that he's
14:19is injured
14:20and
14:21an ambulance has been called
14:23once he tells us he's feeling the pain
14:25we've got a duty of care
14:27to make sure that he receives the best treatment that we can
14:29the injuries he's complaining about
14:32are the ones that we take consistent with a road traffic collision
14:36it's not uncommon for our regular offenders to fake injury
14:41they know they'd rather spend 24 or 48 hours in a nice warm hospital bed
14:46rather than a plastic mat and a cell in Ripley custody
14:48but this lad
14:50at the impact it's suffered in that car
14:52I think it was quite clear that he wasn't faking any injuries
14:55and he was in a mess
14:56we don't know if he got internal bleeding
14:58head injuries
14:59he was refusing to tell us
15:00simply because he didn't want to implicate himself
15:02in that crash
15:03the chances are we will probably meet again now
15:06hopefully not
15:07cause I'm hoping that he may be
15:09you know
15:10serving some time in prison
15:14catching habitual offenders on the run
15:25is a daily challenge for officers like Scott Riley
15:29we've just seen a Range Rover revoke on the traffic cameras
15:33where the driver's wanted for a domestic burglary
15:38at the same time we want this chap for assaulting his partner
15:43so it's a good opportunity to get him detained while he's driving a car
15:48it's quite often that we come across repeat offenders in domestics
16:01it's quite often that we get called to the same households
16:05the same couples
16:07the same victims
16:09what's the location of this vehicle now please?
16:11head in general direction please
16:13should be at 4 by the time you get there
16:17a local unit's got behind it
16:19so
16:20we're making some ground
16:22to give the local officers some support
16:25and then obviously if it fails to stop
16:27we're in an appropriate vehicle
16:29where we could deal with that
16:31if you come towards Wellington
16:34try and put a stop in
16:36prior
16:37albeit that pulling
16:38I'll try and get a stinger out
16:39to receive
16:40so we're heading towards Hilton now?
16:44yeah
16:45so that's away from Wellington
16:46yeah
16:47so I'll just try to get in a position to put a stinger out
16:49should it fail to stop
16:51but then it turned the other way
16:53and we've got it stopped
16:58it looks like it's stopped
16:59we've got it
17:00and
17:01mandate
17:02I'll arrest you for burglary
17:03you know what I'm saying
17:04you know what I'm saying
17:05if you don't think you may have been fed to you know what I mean
17:08you know what I mean
17:09fed to you
17:10and later on your court
17:11and if you do say maybe give an evidence
17:12how can I burgle my own house?
17:13get them all lit
17:14and look at the details on it
17:15I don't know the details of this burglary
17:17you had a drink tonight chap?
17:19no mate
17:20breathalise me
17:21excellent work
17:22at least that's something
17:24this is mum
17:26my
17:27the address is on the driving licence
17:29I would like to remind you
17:30obviously not all in deportions
17:31so I
17:32recommend not talking about it
17:33the necessity for the arrest is prompt an investigation
17:35so we can interview around it
17:37and protection of the
17:39vulnerable individual in question
17:40she is
17:41manipulative
17:43lying
17:44we'll have to get your details
17:46we'll have to get your details
17:48you ain't got a
17:49man under me
17:50I'm not arresting
17:51am I?
17:52just stop
17:53because this is bullshit
17:54are you banging me up overnight
17:55you're going to put me in the cello overnight
17:56for what?
17:57for what?
17:58I ain't done no wrong
17:59I'm not no criminal
18:00I was going to my brother's house out of the way
18:02ok
18:03I do need to change your account
18:04any sort of immigrants
18:05and we will use force
18:06ok
18:07and sometimes think
18:09whoever shouts the loudest will be heard
18:11and it's not uncommon
18:12to hear how they've been treated
18:14or hear how it's not their fault
18:17why is the other person the bad person
18:19but you're only getting one side of the story
18:22but what I do know with this individual is
18:24is making it all about him
18:26you've been arrested for assault
18:27on what?
18:28on your partner
18:29on your partner
18:30on your partner's phone
18:32ok
18:33with the suspect detained
18:35cops search his car for the victim's phone
18:38we can just use any phone that's in there can't we
18:41then we can sort it out
18:42any phones that are in there
18:43because we don't know exactly what it is
18:45there's no phone
18:47but there are other suspicious items
18:49right
18:50because we've found a grinder in your car
18:52and because of how you behave
18:53I suspect that you're under the influence of some controlled substance
18:56some drug
18:57ok so what I want you to do is provide me a specimen of saliva
19:01so you're not going to give us a sample
19:03how am I behaving?
19:04look into my eyes mate
19:05look into my eyes mate
19:06look into my eyes
19:07would you not be angry if you were getting arrested for burglary on your own house?
19:11but you're also acting like somebody that's under the influence of drugs
19:13do my eyes look like I'm under the influence of drugs?
19:15they do actually yeah
19:16no they don't
19:17will you
19:18will you provide a sample of saliva for analysis?
19:22another cup
19:23hello?
19:24hello?
19:25what time did you rest in?
19:3020th
19:31are you willing to give me a sample of saliva
19:35for the purpose of screening to see if you've got cannabis or cocaine in your system
19:40yes or no?
19:41no I'm not giving a sample
19:42you're not giving me a sample
19:43ok
19:44right just listen to this officer then
19:46he's going to arrest you for that offence
19:47you're under arrest
19:48he's going to provide a specimen of saliva for that drug swipe
19:51alright that's a long, deep burglary you've already been arrested for
19:54lovely
19:55given his behaviour tonight
19:57I've got every confidence that he will behave in the cells like he's behaved with me at the roadside
20:02and he won't provide
20:04I now know why he won't do the drug fight
20:07he stinks of it in there, he's definitely have some anti
20:10those individuals need to be dealt with a lot harsher
20:13thanks for that, no problem
20:14the first time that somebody comes into the system and into police contact and through the court system
20:19in an ideal world that should be the last
20:22but the reality is quite different
20:28coming up
20:30danger on the motorway
20:33opposite carriageway
20:35as another repeat offender
20:37he's still trying to make his way with the brambles
20:40is desperate to avoid arrest
20:43and
20:44the sergeant's got behind a suspicious vehicle
20:47tracking down seasoned criminals
20:50you've gone off, you're riding down there
20:52if they hadn't done anything wrong
20:54they wouldn't be wandering off
20:55some people are like police that's all it is
20:57traffic officer Matt Cooling is on patrol
21:14targeting repeat offenders stealing from heavy goods vehicles
21:18and a tango 29
21:20tango 29
21:21tango 29 go ahead
21:22there's a possible clone going south on the motorway
21:25LV 07
21:26can you just have a look at it
21:27are you able to tell if it is the clone or not
21:29what's the make and model please
21:31it is a problem for Derbyshire
21:33we've got lots of arterial routes, airports
21:36you know we've got lots of vehicles
21:37that are transporting lots of goods
21:39you know that ultimately become a target for these sorts of people
21:42Matt's following a suspected stolen truck
21:46a bit of ANPR here on the motorway
21:49a vehicle that's travelling south
21:51it's potentially a clone vehicle
21:53someone's cloning a HGV
21:56in my mind that's simply a red flag
21:58it's probably part of an organised gang
22:00that are going out each night
22:02you know stealing from lorries in and around the country
22:04and taking stolen goods back to where they come from
22:07this lorry that's ahead of us now
22:10when we've checked to ANPR
22:12it's just raising the suspicions that it might
22:14it might be a dodgy, you know, the dodgy lorry
22:16as Matt follows the truck
22:19control updates
22:21looking at the plate images
22:23appears to be a clone
22:24suspected it's a vehicle involved
22:26best of five value goods from HGV
22:29yep, I'm snug
22:31I've got behind the vehicle
22:33I've followed it for a short distance
22:34while I've done some checks
22:35and quite happy then that it is the clone I'm dealing with
22:38I'm very conscious that I'm by myself
22:40when I'm dealing with these vehicles
22:42there's a lot of unknowns
22:43you know, I don't know who's driving it
22:45could be stolen
22:46so there's lots of ambiguity
22:48and you've just got to be aware of that
22:50there's only time for you
22:51it's going to be a month
22:52as other units join the chase
22:57that's it now
22:59Matt tries to slow the truck down
23:01Matt try and ram his way out
23:03this is the best option
23:04put the lights on to try and stop it
23:09it's not complying
23:11it's not reacted
23:12I just got the feeling
23:13there's something not right
23:14yeah, this vehicle
23:16should definitely tell us to stop
23:19any pursuit is dangerous
23:21but ones that involve HGVs in particular
23:24really do raise the stakes
23:26you know, it's a bigger vehicle
23:28and it's much more difficult to stop than a car
23:30because of the size of it
23:37because of the size of it
23:38it could quite easily ram us out of the way
23:42prepare for a D come here
23:44yeah
23:54with the officers closing in
23:58opposite carriageway
24:01the suspect makes a run for it
24:03it is a complete shock to see something like that
24:13you know, I've got to think
24:14I've got to react very quickly
24:16I'll get round
24:17until I get a block off
24:18to try and warn the other traffic
24:20or to deal with the aftermath
24:21if you know, this person gets hit
24:23it is a heart in hand sort of moment
24:25as Matt races to the other side of the motorway
24:28the hunt is on for the runaway suspect
24:34we've got the motorway held behind us
24:36for safety
24:39we've just got cops
24:40just on the southbound carriageway at the minute
24:43and they're just searching the woodland
24:45a drone is sent up to help with the search
24:47there's definitely something in there
24:49if the heat source keeps moving
24:51is that where we're from now?
24:56yeah
24:57you're directly with it
24:58right where you are
25:00with nowhere to hide
25:04keep coming mate
25:05when you get to this railing
25:06what I'd do is I'd stand on railing if I were you
25:08the suspect hands himself in
25:10yeah, stand up where you are
25:12yeah, stand up like that
25:13you're going to have to stand up at some point mate
25:15it's exactly the same all around you
25:16it's going to be shit for you
25:17just stand up
25:19these people just don't care
25:21they don't care what aftermath they leave behind
25:23what damage they cause
25:24or who they hurt
25:25abandoning the vehicle
25:27in a live lane
25:28in the motorway
25:29you know, is extremely dangerous
25:30it's a recipe for disaster
25:31you know, in my mind
25:32it's just selfishness
25:33they just want to get away
25:34that is their primary goal
25:38and just confirm the transport for this male
25:41you're going to be southbound carriageway
25:43is that correct?
25:44yes, yes
25:45he's still trying to make his way
25:46through the bramble
25:48I've cleared some steps for you mate
25:51because I'm like that
25:53yeah
25:54about a whip, bag off
25:55yeah
25:56you're under arrest for theft of motor vehicle
25:58and theft of some tyres
26:01this sort of crime is rife
26:03you know, up and down the country
26:04I've seen what's in the back of the lorry
26:06and you know, it's quite evident
26:07that they've had a good night
26:08there are tens of thousands of pounds
26:10worth of premium tyres
26:12that have been stolen
26:13do you not have to say anything about the defence
26:14if you don't mention one question
26:15to place it on court
26:16anything you do say
26:17may be given evidence
26:18and assess to the arrest for a prompt
26:19and effective investigation
26:20just go and search your pockets mate
26:23the suspect is a disqualified driver
26:26and repeat offender
26:27with over 20 previous convictions
26:30we need to get him moved
26:33get him immediately
26:34because we're on a motorway
26:35and there's a danger of us being killed
26:37it's sort of the modern day highwayman
26:39travelling the roads
26:40nicking what they can
26:41to sell for profit
26:42you know, well
26:43it's got to work
26:44and you know
26:45like the rest of us
26:46and
26:47you know, earn a living
26:51as the suspect is taken away for questioning
26:53the abandoned stolen truck is recovered
26:56and
26:58the motorway reopened
27:00freight crime cost the UK economy
27:03around 420 million pounds a year
27:06with organised gangs targeting service stations on motorways
27:10I know Tango T5
27:22just confirm exactly where the sergeant is please
27:25traffic cop Martin Carter
27:27is responding to a call for help
27:31yeah, this vehicle's about five up
27:33you can get some back on
27:36so the sergeant's got behind a suspicious vehicle
27:39and he's asked for some backup
27:41so
27:42that's what we're travelling to
27:44just off the M1
27:45sergeant Neil Hopwell has stopped a suspicious car
27:48off at 29
27:50first exit to Claycross
27:54when you're outnumbered
27:55particularly
27:56four or five to one
27:57it's very dangerous
27:59and it can go very wrong
28:00a lot of people we deal with
28:01don't like the police
28:02and
28:03the reason they don't like the police
28:04is
28:05because they're
28:06being caught
28:07doing stuff that they shouldn't be doing
28:08you won't get anywhere that way mate
28:11for me like they're scared or something
28:13or usually when they've done something wrong
28:14er
28:15the thing is if they're walking off
28:16it makes them suspicious
28:17so they'll get stopped anyway
28:18the vehicle's come off the motorway
28:21and it's got five people in it
28:23apparently three of them have ran off
28:26first car is it then
28:29mine
28:30yours is it
28:31right
28:32say jump in the back of my motorway
28:33mate
28:34yeah yeah yeah
28:41so I've arrived on scene
28:42and the sergeant's got the driver in the back of his car
28:44and there's a passenger
28:45still at the side of the road
28:47so what I'm saying is
28:49about three o'clock in the morning
28:51what are you using this vehicle for
28:52now in connection with your business then
28:53yeah
28:55have you got some evidence
28:56that that's your motor in your possession then
28:58no not yet
28:59no
29:00how long had it then
29:01er
29:02since tea time
29:03there's one study here
29:05one's gone in through the bushes over here
29:06and the other two walked down to 29
29:10how come your mates have ran off then or scarpered
29:12i don't know
29:13you ask them
29:14they're young and beans
29:15i don't i don't know
29:16what er
29:17what brings you out of this town by night
29:18i can come out any time of night can i
29:20of course you can yeah
29:21have you got any idea with your fella
29:22i don't know i can give you my name
29:23what's your first name sir
29:25have you ever been in trouble with the police before
29:28about
29:30roughly
29:31about ten maybe other years
29:33take it it's not your car
29:34my friends
29:35all right
29:36you're going with him when he's finished
29:37yeah yeah yeah
29:38some people don't like police that's all it is
29:40you know it's that's all it is
29:41just a bit odd innit
29:42right i don't know
29:43the police car
29:44i don't know i don't know
29:45i can't tell people what to do
29:46no i get that
29:47ultimately from our perspective
29:49yeah but yeah of course i understand you
29:50police cars stopped
29:52and the people that are in it
29:54have wandered off
29:55like instantly
29:56people don't just run away in the dead of night
29:58in a county that they're not familiar with
30:00if they've done nothing wrong
30:01if you have done nothing wrong
30:03stop and have a conversation with us
30:04and if everything checks out
30:05you'll be on your way
30:06no issues
30:07you on bail at the minute
30:09yeah
30:10what for
30:11er going equipped i think
30:12looks like my spider senses aren't that far off then
30:14wouldn't it
30:15the sergeant's talking to the driver
30:17i've er checked one of the passengers details
30:19and he's er he's not done anything wrong
30:21so we'll wait and see what happens with the driver
30:24it can be incredibly frustrating
30:27when you know they're up to no good
30:28they know they're up to no good
30:30but what we can prove
30:31er is a different matter
30:32i think at the minute
30:33the driver has got some conditions
30:36and a curfew
30:37which he may be in breach of
30:39so the sergeant's just checking
30:40if he is in breach
30:41and if he is then
30:42he might be getting arrested
30:43local officers arrived
30:45to help search for the three men
30:47who walked off
30:48all i can tell you is
30:49the sergeant
30:50who's in this car
30:51was behind this car
30:53he's followed it up here
30:54as the car's pulled in
30:55three of the passengers ran off
30:57through the bushes
30:58down towards junction 29
30:59you can float round
31:00float round the roundabout
31:01and have a look if you want
31:02yeah
31:03just to see if there's anyone milling around
31:05yeah
31:06nice one
31:08it's three o'clock in the morning
31:10we have issues with
31:11lorries being broken into
31:13at service stations
31:14you can't help but think that
31:15if they hadn't done anything wrong
31:17they wouldn't be wandering off
31:19let's just be decent about it
31:21yep
31:22sergeant's found another one
31:23one of the suspects that ran off
31:25has been spotted in nearby bushes
31:27you've run off
31:28you're hiding down there
31:29sorry for
31:30alright so i'm going to be searching you
31:31yeah it's fine
31:32ok to make sure you've got nothing on you
31:33that you can never hurt me
31:34or my colleagues
31:35alright
31:36just
31:37have you got drugs on you
31:38no not a thing mate
31:39have you been smoking weed
31:40a bit yeah
31:41yeah
31:42have you got any weed on you now
31:43because i can smell it on you
31:44yeah
31:45alright
31:46sergeant's just found another one
31:47hiding in the bushes
31:48he's just doing the top search
31:49where's your mate's gone
31:50i don't know
31:51somewhere there
31:52literally if i wanted to get away
31:53i don't want to talk about it
31:54we're now going to go and search the vehicle under section one of pace
31:58just to see if there's any items for going in quick to steal
32:00empty
32:02nothing in there at all
32:15we're not finding anything untoward in the vehicle
32:17yes it's suspicious circumstances based on what's been witnessed and how these men have acted that they've ran off one was found hiding in the bushes across the road but ultimately if we don't find them in possession of anything and there's nothing stolen in the car i imagine they'll be on their way very shortly
32:24okay i'm just waiting to see what we need to do with the guards to breaching your bail
32:25what it's still breach when you're not in that county
32:26yeah of course it is you've got a curfew haven't you?
32:27curfew means you stop in that's it
32:28because you're not on bail for one force are you going to bail for a few?
32:29as sergeant hopwell continues with background checks on the detainment
32:31news comes in from officers searching nearby
32:32apparently the local officers that went to find the other two have found the other two
32:38and they're not in possession of anything
32:40they're not in possession of anything
32:41and there's nothing stolen in the car
32:42i imagine they'll be on their way very shortly
32:43okay i'm just waiting to see what we need to do with the guards to you breaching your bail
32:45what it's still breach when you're not in that county?
32:46yeah of course it is you've got a curfew haven't you?
32:47curfew means you stop in that's it
32:48because you're not on bail for one force are you?
32:49i'm going to bail for a few
32:50as sergeant hopwell continues with background checks on the detained man
32:54news comes in from officers searching nearby
32:57apparently the local officers that went to find the other two have found the other two
33:00i'm not sure of the outcome yet
33:02i'm sure their details will be checked
33:06i imagine they'll be sent on their way
33:08because we can't prove that they've committed any offences tonight
33:11but we are aware of this vehicle
33:13it's on the radar
33:14and i'm sure some intelligence will be updated on police systems
33:17to say what activity it's been up to tonight
33:21another suspect has been found by local officers
33:25where did you find him?
33:26he's heading towards don't link around there
33:28you know where the cabin is?
33:30yeah yeah
33:31they've just put back and out
33:32one man is still at large
33:34but for now the cops turn their attention back to the car
33:37just having a quick look at the plate
33:39so as you can see
33:41it's got this film on it
33:43on the front
33:44and ordinarily it wouldn't have that
33:47so that's effectively what we'd call a ghost plate
33:53and they put that on to avoid detection
33:56another tactic used by people out committing crime on the roads
34:00and obviously that just confirms it
34:02so yeah good spot from the sergeant
34:04as martin helps search for the remaining suspect
34:09there's an update
34:11so this minute in time
34:12so it's great in manchester police here on bail for
34:15and currently they want you arrested for being in breach of bail conditions
34:19the sergeant's arrest of the driver is in breach of his curfew
34:22and i imagine he'll be off to the nearest custody suite
34:25freight crime is a massive problem
34:28not only in derbyshire but up and down the country
34:31it costs billions of pounds to the industry every year
34:35criminals will travel up and down the motorway and the a-roads
34:39targeting heavy goods vehicles
34:41tear curtains open looking to steal loot
34:44steal it, put it in a cloned wagon, drive it off
34:50the M1 is obviously the main arterial route
34:53that criminals will use
34:55we all as police forces have to try and work together
34:58to try and stop them
35:06coming up
35:07traffic cops follow a suspicious car
35:10vehicle one
35:11it's currently failing to stop
35:13and bring down a runaway suspect
35:16down the floor now
35:18now down the floor
35:20down on the floor
35:21now
35:23you
35:26you
35:28you
35:30you
35:31you
35:33you
35:37you look how busy dog
35:39it's
35:40twenty two dollars
35:41it's very busy
35:42until
35:43two of the morning
35:44traffic cop
35:45chris wels jackson
35:46is halfway through a night shift
35:48Someone's having their aircraft at 3 p.m. and then we could have on the lap.
35:51It's... It's managed.
35:54It's just a cultural thing that people are awake at that time, aren't they?
35:58Two miles away, on the outskirts of Derby...
36:01Left, left, left, pedestrian accident, in sync.
36:04A colleague is tailing a suspicious car.
36:08Airport 1 is currently tailing to stop.
36:14Left, left, left.
36:15Half performance, full of our vehicle, advanced java, issue management, team and trade.
36:21To think that you've got a colleague that's chasing that vehicle on his own,
36:25the first thing in my mind is I need to get to him as quickly as possible to make sure that he's safe.
36:30The RA is high, the speed is 2-0.
36:33Why is this person failing to stop?
36:35There's no markers on the vehicle, pretty much a brand new car.
36:39There's something not right with it.
36:41Name's the speed bump.
36:45Slash, flash, flash.
36:46Onto the roundabout.
36:53Oh, I'm on the road.
37:01Stand by.
37:06Get me on mapping, then, eh?
37:07Somewhere to my vehicle.
37:11Get down to four now!
37:12Jesus!
37:13Down on the floor now!
37:15Now!
37:16Down on the floor!
37:17Down on the floor!
37:18Now!
37:20Down on the floor!
37:21Hands behind your back!
37:22Hands behind your back!
37:24Now!
37:25Hands behind your back!
37:26Don't move!
37:29Mail is at the taser point.
37:30Stand by.
37:31Get me your hands now!
37:32Don't reach!
37:33Do not reach!
37:35There's not in crofts.
37:37Get someone to me.
37:37Don't!
37:38Do not reach!
37:39If that hand moves towards your waist, mate, you're going to get tasered.
37:43You understand?
37:46You're under arrest failing to stop dangerous driving.
37:50Do not move.
37:52Okay.
37:54Two feet!
37:56Don't reach for anything.
37:58Walk with me.
37:59Walk.
37:59Four-nine-stake-six.
38:10For God's sake, he's not a bit search-tiny.
38:12Yeah.
38:13Keeps wanting to reach.
38:15Keeps wanting to reach into his front.
38:17What do you keep reaching into your waistband for?
38:20What?
38:20What do you keep reaching into your waistband for?
38:23Because I was checking if I had my phone.
38:24You had your phone in your hand, mate.
38:26Don't give me that.
38:27I'll put it in my pocket and they'll sign to the T-Pam.
38:29You've got it.
38:30He's mouthing off.
38:32Man, I don't want a recording, bro.
38:33Man.
38:34Hey, can you get recovery, please?
38:35Coding obstruction.
38:36You either get somebody that knows the game's up,
38:39they come quietly,
38:40or you get the complete opposite.
38:42Shouting, abuse, resistance.
38:45We very quickly get him under control.
38:46But then we need to start making sure that
38:48we get the evidence that we need as to why this person's failed to stop.
38:51What are you looking for?
38:53What have you got on your arm?
38:55Well, there's drugs in the vehicle.
38:57Go foggy.
38:58Yeah.
38:59It's illegal.
39:00Quite a lot of passion here as well.
39:03You might drive and get in the car.
39:05Initially, Dan's picked this vehicle up,
39:07and then once it's got to this junction here,
39:09for whatever reason,
39:09he's abandoned it in the middle of the road and ran off.
39:13I would hazard a guess that he probably lives somewhere nearby,
39:15or he knows somebody that lives nearby,
39:16and he was going to that address to try and get away and hide.
39:19But Dan's been quick enough to catch him.
39:21Brought him back to the vehicle.
39:22There's a small amount of drugs in it,
39:24a bit of cannabis,
39:25a bit of cash.
39:26Because we found cannabis in the vehicle,
39:28I'm going to request you to provide a very sad drug test,
39:31test for the presence of cannabis.
39:32Stick your tongue out for me, please.
39:33I've got to watch this when you tell them.
39:35The test will take around eight minutes.
39:38He's quite low level.
39:39He's not got a massive quantity on him.
39:42As the man has previously been banned from the roads
39:45for driving without insurance,
39:47officers run more checks.
39:48Who's is this vehicle?
39:52On the keys.
39:53It says it's his uncle's.
39:55Right, he's got, say, four lessons.
39:58We've got keys in still.
40:00A search of the car raises further suspicions.
40:04It's a rental, mate.
40:05It's the same person that keeps renting it out.
40:08Looking at it, he's checked the car out on the 25th of May this year,
40:13and the lease is to run until the 29th of August.
40:18So it looks like, unless he's had any more paperwork,
40:22he's not returned it on time.
40:23Just insured as a rental as well.
40:25That's him.
40:26That's him.
40:27That's him.
40:28But he's a different person on the policy for the lease of this.
40:30Yeah.
40:32He's got no insurance.
40:33We'll have it as a 165 for no insurance
40:37until we can prove otherwise,
40:39because at the moment, obviously,
40:39the documentation's out of date.
40:43So the vehicle's going to be recovered
40:50under section 165 of the Road Traffic Act
40:52because the chap driving it wasn't insured.
40:56He's been taken off to custody
40:57for failing to stop dangerous driving
41:00and also some support drug drive as well.
41:02Just waiting on the results coming back for that now, so...
41:05I shall crack on getting it recovered.
41:07It's really common for criminals to use rented vehicles to commit crime
41:15because it doesn't directly trace back to them,
41:17so they would generally get somebody to take that car out
41:19and it wouldn't necessarily be that person that drives it.
41:22It would be driven by anybody that wants to use it for criminality.
41:26Obviously, the inquiries that we need to make in the daylight
41:28are just to get confirmation
41:30of who the actual owner of the vehicle is,
41:32who the leaser of the vehicle is,
41:34and did this chap have permission and insurance to drive it?
41:37At the moment, it looks like he didn't.
41:38Nearly a third of all offenders released from custody
41:58go on to re-offend.
42:01Like what bears being a traffic officer,
42:03that we tend to find the same people coming in the same offences.
42:06The people that we do intercept and arrest
42:09always tend to have a history of offences,
42:13not just traffic offences, but burglary, theft.
42:17I think you'd do well to stop someone that's in a stolen vehicle
42:19that's not known to the police.
42:22I don't think they take it serious.
42:24They laugh and joke to you when you deal with them.
42:27You know, they'll even say sometimes,
42:28oh, we'll be back out in 12 hours' time,
42:30or we'll see you this time next week.
42:32It's really sad that we spend the majority of our time
42:38dealing with those same individuals,
42:40because if those same individuals were in prison where they should be,
42:45then that would free our time up to be more proactive,
42:47but we're spending a lot of our time dealing with the same people
42:50in the custody suites and putting them back before the same corpse.
42:54In this episode,
42:59the suspect driver, who collided with a member of the public
43:03and crashed into someone's front garden,
43:06is awaiting trial for dangerous, drunk, disqualified,
43:11and uninsured driving.
43:13You aren't, Alex?
43:16Not yet.
43:16If found guilty, he's likely to be sent back to prison.
43:23The wanted male was prosecuted for driving whilst disqualified
43:26and with no insurance,
43:28and received six points and a £630 fine.
43:34No, I'm not giving you some.
43:35You're not giving me a sample?
43:36Do my eyes look like I'm on the ambulance?
43:38They do, actually, yeah.
43:39No action was taken for any drug-driving offences
43:42or the alleged burglary and assault.
43:46The suspect who fled from a rental car...
43:52Down on the floor!
43:54Now!
43:55Down on the floor!
43:56Hands behind your back!
43:58..is on police bail for failing to stop,
44:00dangerous driving, no insurance,
44:03possession of cannabis,
44:04and driving whilst unfit through drugs.
44:09The serial thief who abandoned a stolen lorry on the M1...
44:13Opposite carriageway.
44:14..with a load full of stolen tyres,
44:17admitted dangerous,
44:18disqualified and uninsured driving,
44:20and a breach of a suspended sentence.
44:23You're on arrest for theft of motor vehicle
44:25and theft of some tyres.
44:27He was jailed for 18 months.
44:32And the man arrested for breaching a curfew...
44:34What, it's still breach when you're not in that county?
44:36Yeah, of course it is.
44:38You've got curfew, haven't you?
44:39Curfew means you stop in.
44:40That's it.
44:41He's currently on police bail,
44:43awaiting a court appearance.
44:44...
