00:26Zach, what can you do as a coaching staff to help Jake,
00:28and maybe what can Jake do to better help himself?
00:31Yeah, I think first and foremost it's my job to help Jake
00:34and find ways to give our guys the best chance to help Jake as well.
00:43So I know that's a very broad answer, but each defense is a little bit unique.
00:48I think it's going to be nice playing at home,
00:49being able to use our verbal cadence,
00:51allows us to do some things that maybe is a little more difficult to utilize on the road,
00:55knowing you're going to be late with the play call and all that kind of stuff,
00:58getting to the line of scrimmage.
00:59So I'm optimistic right now that we've put together a really good plan.
01:02I'm excited to get to work, practice today.
01:05We're all accountable that three points isn't good enough,
01:08ten points isn't good enough.
01:09Our expectation is that we have to score a lot to take pressure off our defense,
01:13put pressure on the opponent.
01:14We have not done that the last two weeks in particular.
01:17And it really starts with me on offense, getting those guys in a rhythm,
01:22create some momentum.
01:23Again, so our defense isn't out there all day.
01:27Zach, after watching the film Monday night,
01:30what is the best starting point for getting to the root cause of all the penalties?
01:35Well, you've got to look at each one of them individually.
01:38One of them was a fourth and two that called on Ted for his head bob.
01:42That only comes up on the road.
01:46Sometimes that will be called, sometimes it won't.
01:49One of them was an illegal formation with the tackle being back.
01:52That's something that they're on every single rep, every single tackle.
01:57We have to do a better job playing within the lines there.
02:00Two were false starts by a rookie guard.
02:03We've got to clean that up.
02:04That's something we can't allow us to set ourselves back.
02:06And then one of them was a procedural third and long.
02:11We got stuck in the wrong formation on third.
02:14So we took the delay game.
02:15Instead of trying to make it right on the third and 15 or calling a timeout,
02:19we took a change.
02:21Whether it was the call came in, the huddle call, whatever it was,
02:25when we lined up, we could see we weren't right.
02:27And so instead of banging it tied in on third and 15, timeout on third and 15,
02:31we took the delay.
02:32So those were, to my recollection, all of them.
02:37The false starts we can't have.
02:38We have to line up appropriately with our tackles.
02:41Again, something every team's warned about every game.
02:43It's a big point of emphasis with the league right now.
02:45So those are things that are nothing to do with Denver, nothing to do with Detroit,
02:50all things we have to do better at.
02:52We prided ourselves on being a disciplined team.
02:55There's been exceptions in the past where we haven't been.
02:58But I would say through and through we've been a very disciplined team.
03:01And too many penalties on unforced stuff the other night.
03:05Coach, those are two tough losses in a row.
03:07You're a dad.
03:08What do you do?
03:09What do you say to these guys to keep them up and ready to go?
03:13Well, I mean, this is part of playing in the NFL is dealing with adversity.
03:18Every team at some point is going to face some adversity we're facing early in the season.
03:22We've done this before.
03:23And so it's part of our job is to come to work, ready to roll, given our best, have a sense of urgency.
03:30Not hang our heads because we've lost two games.
03:32That's unacceptable to me.
03:36Urgency is the word I would say.
03:39Has our standard been acceptable on every single play in the last two games?
03:43I would say it hasn't been.
03:45So you've got to look within yourself.
03:47Is my standard acceptable?
03:48Hey, it wasn't that bad.
03:49Well, that bad is not good enough.
03:52It's got to be great.
03:53And this week on a short week, I expect our guys to hold themselves to that standard.
03:58I'll hold them to that standard.
03:59Hold myself to that standard.

04:02Anything less than that is unacceptable right now where we're at.
04:05We've just got to find a way to get our third win and get it quickly and build on that momentum from that.
04:11How would you evaluate Jake Browning so far?
04:13I think it's not an evaluation of Jake Browning.
04:16It's an evaluation of all of us on offense.
04:18We all have to do our part to put ourselves in the best position possible to go score points.
04:22And that's me giving Jake everything he needs, giving the linemen everything they need.
04:28Really, first and foremost, as the head coach, it's not a reflection on one player.
04:32It's on me.
04:33And so I've got to get ourselves in a better position to be able to go.
04:38That means that though, but how do you feel like he's – how's he –
04:41I'm not giving a grade on a single player.
04:44I'm just saying I think we can all support our quarterback a little bit better.
04:47To that end, Zach, there was a lot of talk about improving the running game, going into Denver,
04:52and wanting to have more balance and whatnot.
04:57Based on what you have seen, what is this – what did you see from the running game?
05:02I thought our guys came off the ball.
05:04I thought they gave us some opportunity.
05:06There weren't explosives that we gained there.
05:08I felt better about it coming out of that game than I had the previous game.
05:12And so, again, we just got to continue to make improvement each week.
05:15Each team is going to present some different structures we got to deal with,
05:18different personnel we got to deal with.
05:19So, the scheme can evolve a little bit each week.
05:22But I felt like there was improvement there.
05:25I don't – again, kind of talking about the standard, where we should be in order to do all the things
05:30that we set out to do before the year.
05:31We're not there yet.
05:33And I'm not going to say that there's time to do that,
05:36but we do need to continue to improve every single week so that as this thing gets going,
05:40we're rolling and feel really good about that.
05:41Do you feel like you need to add competition at quarterback for Jake at this point?
05:46I don't.
05:46I think with every position, we're always assessing.
05:49That's Duke's job.
05:49That's the personnel department.
05:51They do a great job of that, presenting us options when Joe went down of other guys we can bring in the room as well.
05:56So, we thoroughly exhaust that.
05:58I've got a ton of confidence in Jake.
06:00I'm unwavering in that.
06:02I've seen the best of Jake.
06:03I know that we can do a great job supporting him to where he can go winning games for us.
06:07So, I feel extremely confident in Jake Browning.
06:09How did you think Jalen played Monday and will he start again this week?
06:13Yes, he will.
06:13Well, I felt like he did some good things for us against a really, really difficult front.
06:19I mean, he's got some all-pro players up there that he had to do battle with.
06:23And, again, I'm not going to say that anybody played at a Pro Bowl level for us,
06:30but to say in his first start on the road in Denver against that front, I was pleased with what Jalen did.
06:35And I think he continued to build off of that.
06:37And I really liked his demeanor throughout the game.
06:40You know, I spent time over there with those linemen and was really pleased with the demeanor that he had.
06:44And we just got to continue to build off of that.
06:46They said when you guys drafted him, he was here the first couple weeks.
06:51People said he acted like a 10-year vet.
06:54And I wonder what those are.
06:55There's a maturity to him, certainly.
06:57When you meet him, when you just watch him go about his business.
07:02Obviously, it's the first year in the league.
07:03But there's certainly a maturity to Jalen that you appreciate, that you feel like when you give him a coaching point or instruction, he's, okay, I got it.
07:11And not something you're going to have to remind him about, ability to self-correct when something doesn't go right.
07:18I think instead of giving him, hey, this is what it should have been differently, he can speak it very quickly on what he can do to better himself.
07:25And so he's a guy that over his time here already has played a lot of different spots for us.
07:31We're trying to let him settle in at guard.
07:32And I'm pleased with the progress that he's making and the direction that he's in right now.
