00:00Rather than running away from danger, discomfort and hunger, these incredibly brave men and
00:05women stay behind to bring whatever respite, compassion and care they can to those who
00:11need it the most.
00:14We must champion and fight for their access to people in the most desperate of circumstances.
00:21I have had the privilege to hear from humanitarian aid workers directly about the challenging
00:26conditions they work in, from the representatives of humanitarian organisations in Palestine
00:31and Israel whom I met during my visit to the West Bank and Israel in 2018, and to the passionate
00:38UN staff who hosted me at the Jalazan refugee camp on that same visit, and of course to
00:44those in Poland and Estonia supporting Ukrainian children and families fleeing the conflicts
00:51as a result of Russia's invasion.
00:54They do essential work in the most challenging of places.
00:59Often aid workers are local responders, first on the ground and with a local knowledge to
01:04respond quickly and effectively.
01:07And they are supported by volunteers and teams from around the world who selflessly travel
01:13from places of safety to those of desperation to do what they can to make a difference.
