Neil and Pam Murray, are celebrating running their business Double K Tattoos in Newport for fifteen years.

00:00Okay, Pam and Neil, we're at Double K Tattoo Studio here in Newport, and I believe you're celebrating 15 years now, aren't you?

00:07Yeah, 15 years, yeah.

00:09Fantastic. Did you think you'd make it that far?

00:12I didn't think I'd make it 15 weeks, because we pretty much gambled everything we've got on this 15 years ago.

00:20No, it's fantastic, it's great news.

00:22Now, I believe there's an interesting story on how you actually started becoming a tattoo artist, I believe.

00:28It's her fault.

00:28Now, is it true, Pam, you had a bit of a dodgy tattoo?

00:33On the whole of my back is a big fairy.

00:35Right.

00:36It's a bit dodgy.

00:37Yeah.

00:37And he used to look at it and take the mickey.

00:40So, for his birthday, I thought, right, buy a tattoo machine.

00:45Great idea.

00:45And see how he goes.

00:46I give it to him, and he says, ooh, what am I going to do with this?

00:50Put your money where your mouth is.

00:51That's it.

00:52So, yeah, he practised.

00:54And how did you practise? I've got to hear this.

00:56Tattooing grapefruit, bananas, anything that doesn't move or scream.

01:02Brilliant, brilliant.

01:03Best looking fruit ball.

01:05I bet it was, I bet it was.

01:06But it worked, and you've been here 15 years now.

01:09Yeah.

01:09And you were telling me earlier that, you know, you had a bit of a wobble through COVID.

01:14You were a bit worried then, weren't you?

01:16Yeah.

01:16As everybody was, I suppose.

01:17I mean, luckily, they come forward with the small business grants, which kept us going.

01:23Yeah.

01:23And to be honest, that's the only time in my life am I ever going to say, thank God I pay a tax.

01:30Yeah.

01:30No, that's true.

01:32That's right, yeah.

01:33But it was hard.

01:34It was hard, yeah.

01:35Yeah.

01:36Because you get frustrated, especially when it's your own business and you can't.

01:40Of course.

01:40You just don't know what's coming next week.

01:42No, that's true, yeah.

01:43And the kind of business you did as well, you know, with the contacts and everything.

01:47Post contact, yeah.

01:48Yeah, it was a difficult time.

01:48And when we did open it, I mean, the hygiene rules were very high anyhow, but we had to up it a bit.

01:55Regulations with masks and like screens between different people.

02:01That's it, that's it.

02:02But all that's behind you now.

02:03Yeah.

02:04You're celebrating 15 years.

02:05Fantastic.

02:06Have you got any plans to celebrate?

02:08Well, we're doing a few giveaways today.

02:11Yeah, later on today.

02:13And we're going to launch a Christmas raffle and we're going to launch a couple of other things.

02:19Because over the years, we've raised thousands for combat stress and blind veterans.

02:25So we're going to be doing something, launching something for them again today.

02:28That's great, that's a great idea.

02:30Well, congratulations anyway, and here's another 15.

02:32Yeah, yeah.

02:33If not longer.

02:34I don't know whether I've got another 15.

02:37I'll give it a go.
