00:00The federal court today dismissed former Para Exco member Paul Yong's final appeal
00:05against his conviction for raping his Indonesian maid six years ago.
00:10Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Saleh, sitting with Justices Nordin Hasan and Hanipa Farikullah,
00:15ruled that Yong's conviction was sound and ordered him to begin serving his eight-year prison
00:20sentence immediately. Yong was found guilty by the Ipohai court in 2022 of raping his Indonesian
00:26maid at the time. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison and ordered to be whipped twice.
00:33In a majority ruling last year, the Court of Appeal upheld Yong's conviction but reduced his jail
00:38sentence to eight years. The maid told the court that after the incident, Yong warned her not to
00:44tell his wife or else she will die. She then called her embassy and lodged a police report one day later.
00:51Wan Farid also said there was no procedural breach of Section 265A of the Criminal Procedure Code,
00:57which allows a court to hold an inquiry to determine whether certain witnesses can
01:01testify without being seen by the accused or lawyers.
