00:00In this new opus released in 2013, a not-so-handsome evil alien escapes from a lunar prison in order to take revenge on the man he imprisoned there, Agent K.
00:08He decides to go back in time in order to kill K and prevent him from cutting off his arm and arresting him.
00:12He succeeds in his plan and K disappears from the present timeline.
00:15Everyone now thinks he's been dead for 40 years, except J, who decides to go back in time to 1969 to save his colleague.
00:23So yes, in terms of story, we are on something much more substantial.
00:26And there's some really cool stuff in this movie.
00:27The staging is still as interesting and dynamic as ever.
00:31Barry Sonnenfield returns for this third opus and continues to put his stamp on it.
00:35Like all those very cool aerial shots that he often uses, or even those barely distorted close-ups that accentuate a gag.
00:41I find that his work has charm and above all has now become inseparable from this universe.
00:45The characters are great too.
00:46Agent O, played by Emma Thompson, who comes in to replace Zed at short notice.
00:50The young Agent K played by Josh Brolin who does a remarkable job since we firmly believe that he is the same character 40 years earlier.
00:56Do I have a pimple on my nose, Zoro?
00:58The actor imitates Tommy Lee Jones' voice, expressions, and gestures, but does so with such subtlety that he manages to embody another side of the character without making you think he's overdoing it.
01:07Griffin is also an interesting character and I don't know why but he always reminded me of Robin Williams, who would have been perfect in this universe by the way.
01:14Then how can we not mention Boris the animal, who tends to overdo it a bit sometimes.
01:24But which sports an incredibly frighteningly realistic design.
01:27When the creature enters his hand, it's still just as disgustingly awesome.
01:31Another fabulous work from Rick Baker, who has definitely lived up to his reputation and is giving it his all here again.
01:37Especially with this constraint of making the aliens evolve at the end of the 60s and which allows him to bring a new vision to the universe by drawing on old material, notably the SF serials of this period.
01:47The dynamics of the film are quite nice, we feel that there is work.
01:50Will Smith clearly carries the film on his shoulders.
01:52Of course, you'll tell me that with Tommy Lee Jones becoming increasingly jaded and giving nothing, the star of the Bad Boys saga has to give twice as much.
01:59Now this Men in Black 3 is far from perfect.
02:02If we ignore the mega inconsistencies linked to time travel, like all films that use this process ultimately,
02:07we can notice a false rhythm in the middle of the story.
02:09Which is a shame for a 90-minute film.
02:11And some digital effects haven't aged very well.
02:14But unfortunately, we owe this to an era where all films had to include 3D scenes in order to justify wearing disgustingly bulky glasses.
02:21And so we end up with scenes like this, pretty cool on paper, but not super pretty and which take us out of the film a bit I think.
02:27The idea of 3D glasses in cinemas is a mocking thing that exasperates me.
02:30Apart from the fact that it obviously costs a lot more than a standard place.
02:33I find it less complete than the two previous opuses.
02:35In his universe, in his bestiary sometimes, it lacks a little touch of madness I find.
02:40In reality, modern, clean New York doesn't fit in with this sticky, sticky world.
02:44There is a noticeable difference in the art direction between the first two films and this one.
02:48And that bothers me a little.
02:49Then the fact of distorting the chance encounter of the two protagonists with this saccharine ending is a bit too much.
02:55This can be explained by the fact that the film had a rather chaotic production.
02:59The ending had still not been clearly defined at the start of filming, which was put on hold for a very long time in order to rethink all the retro sequences.
03:05Not to mention the temperamental Tommy Lee Jones who clearly doesn't want to be there, and the ego battle between Will Smith and the director.
03:11Now it remains a more than decent sequel, which can be watched without displeasure.
03:14Then it's always funny.
03:15Making us believe that Andy Warhol is just a crook hiding an undercover MIB agent is a pretty clever move.
03:21And Gilles' instructions after neuralyzing the population are all very well written.
03:25Okay, you know when you're on a plane and the flight attendant asks you to turn off your cell phone.
03:29And then you say to yourself I won't turn off my cell phone, yeah that won't do anything to this damn plane.
03:32Of course, look at the result.
03:34I think two films would have been enough.
03:36But three is still good.
03:37As Will Smith said at the time, a trilogy is the perfect way to close a cinematic universe.
03:41The thing is, this third film is the biggest hit of the trilogy, grossing over $630 million worldwide.
03:47And of course, the Man in Black wasn't going to rest for eternity.
03:50We can say that it was from this observation that the real problems began.
