00:00Good morning, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Now something
00:07really interesting is brewing at the University of Sussex at the Attenborough Centre for the
00:12Creative Arts. Thursday, October the 23rd, it's going to be Push to Play. And it's the
00:17debut showcase from Patch. Now what is Patch? Lovely to speak to you, Jordina. What is Patch?
00:23Nice to speak to you too. Patch is a student, staff and alumni collective from the University
00:30of Sussex. It's a network of people who are all interested in putting on events that celebrate
00:37curiosity and play. And what links all the students and is that interest is it? That is, yeah, that's
00:44what links us. So we all really want to put on things that celebrate the fact that none of us
00:53know what we're really doing. You never really know what you're truly doing.
00:57How nice that you admit that.
00:59Yeah, no one ever does. Events that celebrate research and passion, you know, events that
01:10feature artists that are niche, are a little bit weird, might not get highlighted in other
01:17shows. And yeah.
01:20And this is the debut show then. How do you see Patch developing from here? What are the
01:25aims behind it, do you think?
01:28So we want to keep putting on shows. We are all at the moment associated with Sussex University,
01:36but at some point we might move on to celebrating works that may not be associated with the
01:44university. That's, yeah, we always want to just celebrate what we are drawn to. And, you know,
01:52if we move on from the university, then we might be drawn to something else. But always curiosity,
01:57always play.
01:59Are you thinking in terms of regular events from Patch?
02:03Yeah, perhaps. We're going to be exploring other venues as well. The Attingborough Centre is,
02:08of course, an amazing venue in terms of programme. The programme really, really celebrates electronic
02:17events and it really celebrates the niche, you know, more than other Brighton venues do.
02:26So we absolutely love to keep our events at the ACCA. But if, you know, if we move on to other
02:33venues and, yeah, there are lots of lovely venues at Brighton that we'd love to put together.
02:38And how long has this been in the planning? That you're going public with it on October
02:42the 23rd?
02:43January. Yeah, since January, we've been planning it. It started off as Louis, one of the organisers,
02:51put on a student showcase at the Rose Hill. And I attended and I was absolutely blown away.
02:58The talent that was in Sussex that wasn't, you know, indie. It wasn't rock. You know, lots of the
03:06shows that I've been to before in Brighton really celebrate Sussex University as, you know,
03:12quite normal music with stuff I've heard before. But, you know, this showcase celebrated something
03:17that I don't hear as much of. And that was, you know, modular electronic works. And so
03:24this is really off the beaten track stuff. Yeah. A little bit. I mean, Brighton is obviously full
03:29of electronic musicians. But I don't think Sussex University is celebrated as having incredible
03:36electronic musicians. And of course we do. It's a really big part of the course. But yeah,
03:42it's, you know, kind of overshined by BIM and Brighton because they are the more creative,
03:48but, you know, we're very research based, which is something that you really need for music
03:52like this. And it's such an intriguing variety you've got on the day, haven't you? Fabulous
03:57range of things. You must be pleased with the way it's come together.
04:01Really, really pleased. It's a really good mix of past students, current past students and
04:09staff. I think it's really important to highlight the incredible staff that we have at the university.
04:14Yeah. So as organisers, how will you evaluate the day? What are you looking for on that day for it to
04:22be the sets you want it to be?
04:24Oh, well, the sets I know are going to be great. I have absolutely no worries for the sets.
04:30What I kind of want is I want the demographic to be people who have not yet discovered the Attenborough
04:38Centre or people who have not yet discovered that there is such a community for music like this.
04:44At the university and in Brighton. Freshers would be amazing if freshers could attend and make
04:51like-minded friends and make connections and form communities. That would be my dream for this
04:57event. I'm not worried about the performers. I know they're going to be amazing. The sets are
05:01going to be brilliant. Fantastic. Well, it sounds genuinely exciting. It's University of Sussex,
05:07Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, Thursday, October the 23rd, push to play. Do people need
05:13tickets in advance? How do they attend? Yeah. Yeah. So you can buy tickets on the Attenborough Centre
05:19for Creative Arts website with concessions available for students and for, if you want to buy a concession
05:27ticket, buy a concession ticket. Fantastic. And they're also available on DICE, but concession is
05:32not on DICE. So Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts website. Fantastic. Well, I hope it's the success
05:38it deserves to be. And I hope we hear lots more of Patch. Good luck with the whole thing. Hope it goes
05:43brilliantly. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you.
