Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators filled the streets of Cape Town on Saturday, marching towards Parliament to demand an end to what they described as 'genocide' in Gaza.
Footage shows protesters carrying Palestinian flags and placards with slogans including 'If you’re silent, you're complicit, stop the genocide' and 'Don't feel bad, do something.'
"You cannot be watching a live stream genocide, with children being massacred, bombed to pieces, babies being torn from the wombs of their mothers, not to have a feeling," a protester said.
"I am saying globally, to our country in South Africa as well, pool together your military and stop the genocide that's happening in Gaza," she added.
Another marcher stressed the importance of global solidarity, saying: "We can't be on the front lines to assist the people of Palestine, but at least we can raise our voices and show our support in these marches."
The demonstration, organised by the Al-Quds Foundation, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the Muslim Judicial Council, and others, reportedly culminated in the handing over of a memorandum of demands to a government representative.
South Africa has played a prominent role in international legal efforts, filing a case at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention. The ICJ ordered provisional measures in January, directing Israel to prevent acts of genocide.
Israel has strongly denied 'genocide' or 'famine' in Gaza, and maintained that "unauthorised attempts to breach the blockade are dangerous, unlawful and undermine ongoing humanitarian efforts."
The Israel-Hamas war in Gaza erupted on October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian group launched an attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people and kidnapping more than 200 others, according to Israeli officials.
Israel's subsequent military operations in Gaza have killed more than 65,549 people and injured over 167,518 others at the time of publication, according to Gaza's Ministry of Health.
