00:02:22Shown by the owner, the well-known fancier, Mr. Kylo Vance,
00:02:26whose kennel comprises some of the finest campaigners in America.
00:02:32That's fine.
00:02:33Smile, please.
00:02:35Cup to your right.
00:02:37That's great.
00:02:39Sorry, boys, but these are not trophies.
00:02:42Hold it.
00:02:43Hold it right there.
00:02:46Thank you so much.
00:02:47Mind if we go now?
00:02:49I can stand one dog, but this bedlam is getting on my nerves.
00:02:52Don't be impatient, darling.
00:02:54We'll have plenty of time for dinner.
00:03:12Hold it, uh, two and a half.
00:03:15So.
00:03:16Event number 728.
00:03:18The blue ribbon won by Gillespie of Heatherstone,
00:03:21Dundee Deviler is runner-up,
00:03:23and Midlothian gentleman receives the special.
00:03:26Better luck next time, Mr. Vance.
00:03:30Don't be down hard, Captain.
00:03:31You're still champion with me.
00:03:33Maybe we'll have better luck in Italy, huh?
00:03:35Tough luck, Vance.
00:03:36I was hoping to have the pleasure of greeting you tomorrow.
00:03:38Oh, thank you very much, Mr. Cole.
00:03:40Perhaps you'll get stiffer competition from Sir Thomas MacDonald.
00:03:43Perhaps.
00:03:43Well, I'll borrow Misty Morn for a second.
00:03:48But, Miss Mike, you know, Mr. Hart,
00:03:49you don't want anyone to borrow his dog.
00:03:51Come in on and protect him, if you like.
00:03:52That's enough, Sir Thomas.
00:04:01I wouldn't take off another whisk.
00:04:04I think you're right, Sandy.
00:04:06Get ready.
00:04:07Hold it.
00:04:08Thanks.
00:04:08Hey, uh, Gilly, laddie.
00:04:10Hello, Hilda.
00:04:11Hello, Tal.
00:04:12Well, what's the idea?
00:04:13Thought we'd do a little private judging.
00:04:14I don't imagine your uncle would particularly approve of this.
00:04:16I'm sure he wouldn't, but now.
00:04:18Hold him a minute, Sandy.
00:04:19Let's take a good look at him.
00:04:20A'ight.
00:04:21Oh, my friend.
00:04:22What do you?
00:04:26Mm-hmm.
00:04:31Well, what do you think?
00:04:33I think it's a pretty close thing.
00:04:34I'm not worried, eh, Sandy?
00:04:37I think you're betty safe, sir.
00:04:39Here we are, sir.
00:04:41What the devil do you think you're doing, Hilda?
00:04:43Well, I...
00:04:43How do you do?
00:04:44How do you do, sir?
00:04:44I just wanted to prove that you're going to lose money to Tom
00:04:47when these two get into the ring tomorrow.
00:04:48And have you proved it to your satisfaction?
00:04:50So much so that I want you to loan me $1,000 to place on Gilly.
00:04:53Hilda, that's a cheek for you.
00:04:55Wants to bet against me with $1,000 of my own money.
00:04:58I wasn't asking you for your money.
00:05:00I merely want you to loan me some of mine.
00:05:02As long as I control the purse strings,
00:05:03you're not going to do any betting against me.
00:05:06You'll be grateful that I've saved a few thousands of your fortune someday.
00:05:09But don't raise your hopes too high, Hilda.
00:05:12Bring that dog out here.
00:05:16I shouldn't let him worry you, my dear.
00:05:18You know how I hate him, Tom.
00:05:20Things he's done to me.
00:05:22I despise him.
00:05:24Darling.
00:05:26Now, let's see.
00:05:28Where did I put that?
00:05:29Ah.
00:05:31There it is.
00:05:32Unsolved murders.
00:05:34You know, I almost forgot it.
00:05:37I wouldn't have been able to sleep a wink tonight,
00:05:39wondering who murdered who and why.
00:05:41How any intelligent man can read that drivel is beyond me, Brisbane.
00:05:45What time does that Chicago train go?
00:05:46Five o'clock.
00:05:48Well, it's 4.15.
00:05:49Oh, you've got plenty of time.
00:05:50Yes, I know, but I want to get out of here before Archie gets home.
00:05:54Good afternoon, sir.
00:05:56Afternoon.
00:05:57Is my brother at home?
00:05:58Yes, sir.
00:05:59He's upstairs.
00:05:59Tell him I want to see him.
00:06:00Yes, sir.
00:06:03Your taxi's waiting, sir.
00:06:05All right, there's the bag.
00:06:06Did you get those reservations?
00:06:08Yes, sir.
00:06:09And Mr. Archer told me to tell you he wants to see you, sir.
00:06:12Oh, he did, eh?
00:06:14You tell him I don't want to see him.
00:06:16Tell him I said so.
00:06:17In those words, sir.
00:06:19That's exactly.
00:06:20Unless you can think of something stronger.
00:06:22Yes, sir.
00:06:24Of course.
00:06:26Of course, it's none of my business, Brisbane.
00:06:28But I wouldn't talk that way in front of Gamble.
00:06:30I don't trust him.
00:06:32I just couldn't resist it.
00:06:33I'd like to see the look on Archer's face when he tells him.
00:06:37I wouldn't.
00:06:38How the deuce can you stand it here?
00:06:40Why, there wouldn't be enough money in the world to compensate me for being Archer Coe's secretary.
00:06:45Oh, he's not as bad as all that.
00:06:46Say, you better be getting along.
00:06:47There's such a thing as carrying loyalty too far.
00:06:49Don't forget, I overheard a few of his choice remarks to you.
00:06:52When you dared to suggest that you were in love with Hilda and wanted to marry her.
00:06:55I'm afraid you're taking Archer a little too seriously, old man.
00:07:02Did you deliver my message?
00:07:04I thought it best to wait till you were safely away, sir.
00:07:08Do you mind dropping me off?
00:07:10I have an engagement with Hilda for dinner.
00:07:11Come ahead.
00:07:11Come ahead.
00:07:15All aboard.
00:07:17Albany Express.
00:07:19Stanford.
00:07:20Bridgeport.
00:07:22New London.
00:07:23New Haven.
00:07:24New Haven.
00:07:25West Gilly.
00:07:26Lawrence.
00:07:28Boston.
00:07:37Here is Sir Thomas MacDonald New.
00:07:42What's the matter, Sandy?
00:07:43Something terrible has happened, sir.
00:07:44Gilly's gone.
00:07:45What?
00:07:46And I cannot find him.
00:07:47They have taken him off the bench, sir.
00:07:49Well, he couldn't have got loose.
00:07:54He didn't break that lock himself, either.
00:07:58I haven't been away from that dog for ten minutes all day, sir.
00:08:01I just went into the restaurant to get a wee sandwich,
00:08:03and when I come back, he was gone.
00:08:06Sir Thomas.
00:08:06Yes.
00:08:08I think we found him, sir.
00:08:09Where?
00:08:10Out in the alley, sir.
00:08:18This way, sir.
00:08:19I'll kill the man who did this.
00:08:38Listen, Tom, you mustn't do anything until you're sure.
00:08:40Please.
00:08:42I've got my own ideas.
00:08:44Oh, I know Uncle Archer's mean and cruel,
00:08:46but I can't believe he'd do a thing like this.
00:08:57Hello?
00:09:00I'm sorry, but Mr. Archer Coe isn't here.
00:09:03Your dog dead.
00:09:06I'm terribly sorry.
00:09:09I'll try to locate him at once.
00:09:16Go away from me, you.
00:09:24Get out of here.
00:09:26Get out.
00:09:28I suspected it when I saw you together this afternoon.
00:09:31You're nothing but a two-timing...
00:09:32Get out of my apartment.
00:09:36Get out.
00:09:37From now on, it is your apartment.
00:09:39All yours.
00:09:40I'm getting out for good.
00:09:42Ah, Mr. Coe.
00:09:54My dear friend, I...
00:09:55Yes, I see you are.
00:09:57Pardon me.
00:09:58Yes.
00:09:59Oh, I am, how do you say it?
00:10:01Panto allegory.
00:10:02I came to see you.
00:10:03I received a cable from Milan authorizing me
00:10:05to complete the deal for your Chinese collection
00:10:07and confirming the price of $117,000.
00:10:10It means decorations and all that sort of thing
00:10:13from a very grateful government, I suppose.
00:10:15Oh, no memento.
00:10:16But it's no good now, of course.
00:10:18I've changed my mind.
00:10:19Oh, but you have promised me
00:10:19you can't go back on your word.
00:10:21What will I tell my people?
00:10:22What will I say?
00:10:23Pity you didn't think of this before.
00:10:24You might have been a little more discreet, eh, Grassy?
00:10:27But you have signed a contract with me.
00:10:28Too bad for you.
00:10:29It's still at my home, in my safe.
00:10:31Oh, but you will...
00:10:31Most certainly destroy it.
00:10:33Tonight.
00:10:35I'll tell you what I'll do.
00:10:36I'll give you Miss Delafield
00:10:38for nothing.
00:10:40You're open.
00:11:10Hey, Liang, out of the game, eh?
00:11:15I was led to believe that a cook's place is in the kitchen.
00:11:17The next time I saw it.
00:11:18I have been expecting my dismissal, Mr. Cole.
00:11:20We have served our purpose, these priceless treasures and I.
00:11:24I overheard Mr. Reid saying you were preparing to sell this whole collection.
00:11:28You've been listening at the keyhole, have you?
00:11:30You cannot sell them, Mr. Cole.
00:11:32Do you think I would have dishonored my ancestors, perched my soul,
00:11:35cheated my own countrymen to acquire these for you?
00:11:38Had I not believed that you would reverence them as I do?
00:11:41That's the worst of your race,
00:11:42a pack of mawkish sentimentalists about your ancestors.
00:11:45I don't need you tonight. Go on, get out.
00:11:51I would suggest you consider most carefully before you sell.
00:12:08I would suggest that you'd like to go to the store,
00:12:10which for you would do not have to be affiliated with the finest people.
00:12:12In the light of my life.
00:12:13Because I was surrounded by the camera,
00:12:14it's thought that you'd like the others.
00:12:15At the time it may have continued to nurture.
00:12:17I'd like to move my own country to eat the most.
00:12:18I'd like to go.
00:12:19I'd like to go.
00:12:20And as I do, I've ever known for my own country.
00:12:21I'd like to go.
00:12:22And as I was at the time that came from the street,
00:12:24I'd like to go.
00:12:25I'd like to go.
00:12:27What do you know?
00:12:28I'd like to go.
00:12:29I'd like to go to the home.
00:12:30I'd like to go.
00:12:31I'd like to go.
00:12:33I'd like to go.
00:12:34Come on, Mr. Cole.
00:12:51Mr. Cole.
00:12:56Mr. Cole.
00:12:57Mr. Cole.
00:13:03Breakfast, Mr. Cole.

00:13:21Mr. Reed!
00:13:22Mr. Reed!
00:13:24What is it, Amble?
00:13:25Mr. Cole.
00:13:26Mr. Archer Cole has killed himself.
00:13:28Killed himself?
00:13:29When?
00:13:30How?
00:13:31He's sitting in there like...
00:13:32and the door's bolted.
00:13:33You're positive?
00:13:34Yes, sir.
00:13:35In his bedroom.
00:13:36Phone the police.
00:13:37Yes, sir.
00:13:47Hello?
00:13:48Give me police headquarters, quick.
00:13:53Armors are had.
00:13:54Sergeant Miller speaking.
00:13:57Wait a minute.
00:13:58Wait a minute.
00:13:59I don't get you.
00:14:00Take it easy.
00:14:01All right.
00:14:02Suicide.
00:14:03Suicide?
00:14:05Wait a minute.
00:14:06You're not gonna run out on this hand.
00:14:08Yeah.
00:14:09Who?
00:14:11Archer Cole.
00:14:1298 D. 71st Street.
00:14:14Okay, I got you.
00:14:15Is that it, Sergeant?
00:14:17Yeah.
00:14:18Well, goodbye, Ernest.
00:14:19Sergeant Heath, to you, Cub.
00:14:21Kick in with that six-bitch.
00:14:22Oh, relax, will you?
00:14:25This is your case, Sergeant.
00:14:26You better get the boys out.
00:14:2898 71st Street?
00:14:30That's right.
00:14:31All right.
00:14:32Come on, Sniff.
00:14:33Tell Dr. Amos to hurry right out to 98 East 71st Street.
00:14:37Did you say East, Sergeant?
00:14:38East?
00:14:39Yes.
00:14:40I got it.
00:14:41Daily Mail?
00:14:42Yes.
00:14:43Calling car 18, car one eight.
00:14:44Oh, Times?
00:14:45Charlie Adler.
00:14:4698 East 71st Street.
00:14:47Last night, Archer Cole committed suicide.
00:14:49Proceed immediately, and call your station for instruction.
00:14:59Fire and warmer with lights amounted winds from New York vicinity today and tomorrow.
00:15:02Yes, sir.
00:15:03And now for the latest news flashes.
00:15:05Archer Cole, the well-known sportsman and collector committed suicide last night at his home,
00:15:1048 East 71st Street.
00:15:12His body was discovered by the butler at 8 this morning when he took up a breakfast tray.
00:15:16No reason has been advanced for this action as Mr. Cole was an excellent help and had no financial trouble.
00:15:21Yes.
00:15:22No news has been received from the crew of the accident.
00:15:28Is the land phone still connected?
00:15:29Yes, sir.
00:15:30But it will be disconnected in about two minutes, sir.
00:15:32I see.
00:15:33Hello.
00:15:34Hello, Markham.
00:15:35Hello, Vance.
00:15:36I thought you were on your way to Italy.
00:15:37I am.
00:15:38I say, Markham.
00:15:39I just heard about Archer Cole.
00:15:40Yes.
00:15:41Too bad he had to bump himself off like that.
00:15:42That's why I called you.
00:15:43Are you sure that he did bump himself off?
00:15:44Well, his butler tells us he's sitting in a locked room with a revolver in his hand and a bullet in his head.
00:15:48I don't know what else you'd call him.
00:15:49I don't know what else you'd call him.
00:15:50I don't want to butt into your affairs, but, uh, aren't you a bit hasty in jumping to that conclusion?
00:15:54Hasty?
00:15:55Why?
00:15:56Well, if you knew Archer Cole, you would know that suicide is almost a psychological impossibility for him.
00:16:00Psychological, Bosh.
00:16:01A two and two may be a good man.
00:16:02I just heard about Archer Cole.
00:16:03Yes.
00:16:04Too bad he had to bump himself off like that.
00:16:05That's why I called you.
00:16:06Are you sure that he did bump himself off?
00:16:07Well, his butler tells us he's sitting in a locked room with a revolver in his hand and a bullet in his head.
00:16:10I don't know what else you'd call him.
00:16:11I don't know what else you'd call him.
00:16:12Well, you know that suicide is almost a psychological impossibility for him.
00:16:15Psychological, Bosh.
00:16:17A two and two make four, don't they?
00:16:19Well, how do you know you have two and two?
00:16:21Just let me point out to you.
00:16:22Oh, point out the Statue of Liberty.
00:16:24Say, Vance.
00:16:25Hello?
00:16:26Hello?
00:16:27The land phone has been disconnected, sir.
00:16:30Oh.
00:16:35Uh, will you have my luggage brought up?
00:16:37Yes, sir.
00:16:38Steward.
00:16:39Uh, just have them send it ashore.
00:16:40I've decided not to sail.
00:16:41Sir?
00:16:44Vance, you've been right about a lot of cases in the past.
00:16:46But I can't help smiling at you getting off that boat and giving up a swell trip all because of a hunch.
00:16:52As a matter of fact, Markham, it's more than a hunch.
00:16:54Huh?
00:16:56It just so happens that I talked with Archer Coe only yesterday.
00:16:59What?
00:17:00Where?
00:17:01The Long Island Kennel Club.
00:17:03You know, I can't conceive of a man on the verge of suicide
00:17:07being very deeply concerned over winning a championship at a dog show.
00:17:11Can you?
00:17:12No.
00:17:13What do you mean?
00:17:14Simply this.
00:17:15As late as yesterday afternoon, Archer Coe was looking forward with the keenest anticipation to winning a blue ribbon from Sir Thomas McDonald's today.
00:17:22Sir Thomas McDonald's.
00:17:23Say, wasn't it his dog that was found dead last night?
00:17:25Right.
00:17:26And Archer Coe found dead this morning.
00:17:29You suppose there might be some connection there?
00:17:31I don't know.
00:17:33But if someone were to try to kill Captain McTavish, I'd probably turn murderer myself, wouldn't I, Captain?
00:17:37Hello, Mr. Markham.
00:17:38I got your message to hold everything up.
00:17:39What's the idea?
00:17:40Hello, Mr. Van.
00:17:41Good morning, Sergeant.
00:17:42Well, it's been a long time.
00:17:43Several years.
00:17:44I might have known it would be you.
00:17:45The world's champion troubleshooter.
00:17:46Now, come on, boys.
00:17:47Come inside.
00:17:48Well, Chief, this is another just open and shut case.
00:17:50Mr. Reed, the secretary.
00:17:51The secretary.
00:17:52The secretary.
00:17:53The secretary.
00:17:54The secretary.
00:17:55The secretary.
00:17:56The secretary.
00:17:57The secretary.
00:17:58The secretary.
00:17:59The secretary.
00:18:00The secretary.
00:18:01The secretary.
00:18:02The secretary.
00:18:03The secretary.
00:18:05The secretary.
00:18:06The secretary.
00:18:07This is Gamble, the butler.
00:18:08Yes, sir.
00:18:09Mr. Markham, the district attorney.
00:18:10How do you do, sir?
00:18:11And, uh, Mr. Vance.
00:18:13How do you do?
00:18:14How do you do?
00:18:15Everything just as it was?
00:18:16Well, they said they haven't touched anything.
00:18:18We thought it best to leave everything intact, sir.
00:18:20Good.
00:18:21Where's the room?
00:18:22Upstairs.
00:18:23This way, please.
00:18:29You, uh, been in Mr. Coe's service long?
00:18:31About three months, sir.
00:18:33And before that?
00:18:34Why, uh, unfortunately, I was unemployed, sir.
00:18:37This is it, sir.
00:18:43Yep, he's there, all right.
00:18:44Just like I told the police on the phone.
00:18:46I tried the door, found it, locked, looked through the keyhole,
00:18:48and there he was, dead.
00:18:53I think this is a job for you, sergeant.
00:18:54Certainly, Mr. Vance.
00:18:55Well, Hennessy.
00:18:56What are you standing there for?
00:18:57Your health?
00:18:58This takes beef.
00:18:59All right.
00:19:00Congratulations, sergeant.
00:19:02What is this?
00:19:03A bedroom or a museum?
00:19:04More junk here than a Chinese Josh house.
00:19:05Well, Hennessy, what are you standing there for?
00:19:06Your health?
00:19:07This takes beef.
00:19:08All right.
00:19:09Congratulations, sergeant.
00:19:11Congratulations, sergeant.
00:19:12What is this?
00:19:13A bedroom or a museum?
00:19:14More junk here than a Chinese Josh house.
00:19:18What is this, a bedroom or a museum?
00:19:20More junk here than a Chinese Josh house.
00:19:21More junk here than a Chinese Josh house.
00:19:34I trust I did the right thing, sir, by not breaking down the door.
00:19:37I realized I could be of no help to him.
00:19:39Oh, he's been quite dead for hours.
00:19:42Bumped himself off, that's plain enough.
00:19:44Certainly looks that way, Vance.
00:19:45I'm afraid your trip was spoiled for nothing.
00:19:46I'm afraid your trip was spoiled for nothing.
00:19:48I think not, Markham.
00:19:50This may prove far more interesting than a trip to Europe.
00:20:00You carry a gun?
00:20:02No, sir.
00:20:03You?
00:20:05Uh, yes, sir, but only at night for the protection of the household.
00:20:08Is that it?
00:20:09Why, I...
00:20:11Come on.
00:20:12No, that was Mr. Archer's.
00:20:14But, uh, he always kept it in a desk drawer downstairs.
00:20:17I saw it yesterday morning as I was putting away some papers.
00:20:19Oh, you did, eh?
00:20:21Did, uh, Mr. Coe generally keep his windows locked?
00:20:24Why, no, sir.
00:20:26As a matter of fact, he was a great believer in fresh air.
00:20:29Ah, indeed.
00:20:30I wondered if these gentlemen would mind waiting downstairs.
00:20:33Well, certainly not.
00:20:33I'm sorry we had to damage your door.
00:20:36That's quite all right. It's easily repaired.
00:20:38I'll have it attended to at once, sir.
00:20:39Hennessy, see that no one leaves the house without my permission.
00:20:41All right.
00:20:44It's as plain as a nose on your face.
00:20:47This guy locked himself in here and blew out his brains.
00:20:50I wish I could agree with you, Sergeant.
00:20:52How the devil could it be anything but suicide?
00:20:56It was all very well for you to theorize before we got here, Vance.
00:21:00But now that you've seen this and there are no signs of a struggle...
00:21:03And the door bolted on the inside and no means of entrance to the room.
00:21:08Ah, no other means of entrance.
00:21:09All right you are, Sergeant.
00:21:11But we can hardly call a second-story window a means of entrance.
00:21:19And nothing here that even a human fly could crawl up.
00:21:22So why should Archer Cole lock his windows?
00:21:24Particularly if he was a fresh air enthusiast.
00:21:26I'm afraid your reasoning is not altogether convincing.
00:21:29Well, perhaps so, but doesn't it strike you as rather odd that a man should suddenly decide to commit suicide...
00:21:35...while changing from his street clothes to pajamas?
00:21:37Well, why not?
00:21:38A man debating suicide might get partially undressed and walk up and down for hours trying to make up his mind.
00:21:43Yes, he might walk up and down for hours but not with one shoe half off.
00:21:47No, Markham, something stopped him as he was removing that shoe.
00:21:51This was supposed to suggest suicide, but someone miscalculated.
00:21:57But you can't get away from that bolted door.
00:21:59I wish I could.
00:22:01The way you figure it out, the man was murdered.
00:22:04As soon as the killer is gone, he gets up, goes and bolts the door.
00:22:08Plants himself in a comfortable chair with a loaded gun in his hand to suggest suicide.
00:22:13That's a swell theory.
00:22:21Hello, Gamble.
00:22:23What is this? What's happened?
00:22:25Something terrible has happened, Miss Lake.
00:22:27Hilda.
00:22:28What is it, Raymond? What is it?
00:22:30It's your Uncle Archer, Hilda. He killed himself last night.
00:22:34Where?
00:22:35They're upstairs.
00:22:43Hey, don't touch that body, Miss.
00:22:51Oh, Mr. Vance.
00:22:53How do you do, Miss Lake?
00:22:55This is Mr. Markham, the district attorney.
00:22:57How do you do?
00:22:59Miss Lake is Coe's niece.
00:23:01I'm sorry, Miss Lake, but you mustn't touch anything until the medical examiner arrives.
00:23:05It's against regulation.
00:23:06Is it also against regulations to tell me what's happened?
00:23:08We arrived only a few moments ago. We found your uncle as you see him.
00:23:13It has every appearance of suicide.
00:23:15I doubt it.
00:23:17Do you know of anyone who would have reason to kill your uncle?
00:23:21Yes, I had for one.
00:23:24Why, Miss Lake?
00:23:25Because he stood in the way of everything I wanted.
00:23:27He made my life miserable because he held the purse strings.
00:23:31And because...
00:23:32Because he was jealous of every man who came near me.
00:23:35I was afraid of him.
00:23:37Oh, the horrible nights I've spent in this house.
00:23:43Are we to accept your comments as a confession of murder, Miss Lake?
00:23:46Look here, Markham. That's ridiculous.
00:23:48Please, Raymond.
00:23:49I think I can handle this situation myself.
00:23:51When we find out, Miss Lake, I'm going to find out.
00:23:54The door was bolted from the inside.
00:23:58Bolted inside?
00:24:01Oh.
00:24:02Maybe he did shoot himself.
00:24:03Can't you make up your mind?
00:24:04Do you know of anyone else who felt as you do about your uncle?
00:24:06Practically everyone he came in contact with.
00:24:08He was ruthless.
00:24:09He wanted his own way and everything.
00:24:11I imagine there are plenty of Chinese who will be glad to know that his collecting days are over.
00:24:14I think I can handle this situation myself.
00:24:16When we found your uncle, Miss Lake,
00:24:18the door was bolted from the inside.
00:24:20I imagine there are plenty of Chinese who will be glad to know that his collecting days are over.
00:24:24Ask our cook.
00:24:26I shall.
00:24:28Can you think of anyone else?
00:24:29Well, Uncle Brisbane shared my feelings toward him, I'm sure.
00:24:31Where is this Brisbane guy?
00:24:33Maybe he decided to do something about it.
00:24:35That's impossible.
00:24:37He's on his way to Chicago.
00:24:38He left on the five o'clock train yesterday afternoon.
00:24:40He'd be just about getting there by now.
00:24:43Well, you'd probably like to wire him, wouldn't you?
00:24:46Why, yes, of course.
00:24:48Is that all?
00:24:49Before the present, yes.
00:24:56Suppose we check up enough of Brisbane on that Chicago train.
00:24:59Won't take me but a minute.
00:25:07Hello?
00:25:08Come on, Snitkin.
00:25:09Get your feet off the boss's desk and jump down to Grand Central.
00:25:12All right, I'll get you.
00:25:18Yes, Mr. Heath.
00:25:19Langham Hotel?
00:25:20Chicago?
00:25:21Yes, sir, I'll rush the call.
00:25:22Hold the wire, please.
00:25:23Oh, yes, Mr. Heath.
00:25:28We're expecting Mr. Brisbane call this morning.
00:25:29Oh, yes.
00:25:30He...
00:25:31He...
00:25:32He wired for a reservation last night.
00:25:34Goodbye.
00:25:35Here.
00:25:36He took the five o'clock train all right.
00:25:38Good.
00:25:39Oh, yes, Mr. Heath. We're expecting Mr. Brisbane called this morning.
00:25:42Oh, yes. He... He wired for a reservation last night.
00:25:45Thank you. Goodbye.
00:25:48Yeah. He took the five o'clock train, all right.
00:25:51Good.
00:25:52You know, there's a few things I'd like to find out about this girl, Hilda Lake.
00:25:56Why are you always trying to check up on me?
00:25:58I'm not trying to check up on you, Hilda. I want to help you.
00:26:03Well, you know how I feel about you. You know that I love you.
00:26:06But lately, you seem to have changed.
00:26:08Every time I want to speak to you about marriage, you evade me.
00:26:11What's on your mind?
00:26:13Oh, nothing, nothing.
00:26:15Raymond, I never said I'd marry you.
00:26:17But I thought that now we...
00:26:19Well, that...
00:26:20That I could take you away from here.
00:26:22You might as well know now as later.
00:26:24When all this is cleared up, I'm going to marry Tal MacDonald.
00:26:28Oh.
00:26:29Oh, try to understand, Raymond.
00:26:32I'm sorry.
00:26:34Oh, don't tell me. Come on, don't you...
00:26:35Be quiet.
00:26:37Oh, suicide, my eye. With the DA himself and Vance on the job?
00:26:39It's suicide and that's that.
00:26:40Oh, come on. Have a cigar.
00:26:42It's still suicide.
00:26:46Hey, wait a minute.
00:26:48Are you a reporter?
00:26:50No, I'm Sir Thomas and Ronald.
00:26:52I'd like to talk to the officer in charge here.
00:26:53Oh, come on inside.
00:26:59Tom!
00:27:03Why didn't you stay away from here?
00:27:05And leave you to face this thing alone?
00:27:06But you promised me last night you wouldn't come here.
00:27:08Won't you go, please? I can bluff it through.
00:27:10I don't want the police asking you questions.
00:27:12I know all the answers.
00:27:13Oh, but please go for my sake.
00:27:15Let's forget about it, shall we?
00:27:16It's too late now. In any case, the police are guarding every entrance.
00:27:18Wait a moment.
00:27:20You can cross through that yard and get to your apartment.
00:27:21No one will see you.
00:27:22Take the first boat to England and I'll join you as soon as I can.
00:27:26Watch out for those newspaper vans, Sir Thomas.
00:27:28They're even deadlier than the police.
00:27:30I had no intention of leaving.
00:27:31Ah, good.
00:27:33Oh, by the way, I was sorry to hear about the death of your dog last night.
00:27:36Oh, thanks.
00:27:37You didn't by any chance discuss it with Archer Cole, did you?
00:27:41No.
00:27:42If I had, I might have killed him.
00:27:44Well, did you?
00:27:45That's your problem.
00:27:50Right in here.
00:27:51I want to see.
00:27:52You mean you're a doctor?
00:27:53How about a statement?
00:27:54Give me a chance.
00:27:55Oh, wait a minute.
00:27:56I'm a doctor, not a magician.
00:27:57Ha, ha.
00:27:58Almost fallen funny.
00:27:59Go on, now.
00:28:00Scream.
00:28:01Wait a minute.
00:28:02Wait a minute.
00:28:03Hello, Dad.
00:28:04Hello, Kelsey.
00:28:05Where have you been?
00:28:06Haven't seen you for a long time.
00:28:07Working hard.
00:28:08What?
00:28:09What kept you so long?
00:28:10Did you walk all the way?
00:28:11You always pick on me at mealtime.
00:28:12I was in the middle of cakes and sausage.
00:28:14What have you got?
00:28:15Just plain suicide.
00:28:16This guy locked himself in the room, bumped himself off.
00:28:19Suicide?
00:28:20Then why didn't you let me finish my breakfast?
00:28:21Hello, Doc.
00:28:22Hello, Markham.
00:28:23All you need is an order to remove the body.
00:28:25If you told me that over the phone, I would have sent my assistant.
00:28:28Mr. Markham told me to phone you personally.
00:28:30Don't crab at me about it.
00:28:31I'll give you the approximate hour of the death, if you want it.
00:28:34That's big-hearted of you, Doc.
00:28:35And the routine autopsy, we can do tomorrow.
00:28:38As it's just a case of suicide.
00:28:40Why do you jump to that conclusion, Doctor?
00:28:43I know a dead man when I see one.
00:28:46Besides, the door was bolted.
00:28:47I know.
00:28:48The door was bolted from the inside.
00:28:49But what about the body?
00:28:50Hadn't you better have a look at it?
00:28:52I was going to.
00:28:54I'm a doctor, not a detective.
00:28:57This man is dead with a bullet hole in his right temple.
00:28:59He's holding a gun in his right hand.
00:29:01Just the kind of wound that might have been self-inflected.
00:29:04The position is natural and the door was locked on the inside.
00:29:09Well, let me see.
00:29:12That's strange.
00:29:14Did you find something to disturb you, Doctor?
00:29:16Plenty.
00:29:17There's blood in his mouth.
00:29:19And he's got a skull fracture from some club-like instrument.
00:29:23Now what about the bullet wound in his temple?
00:29:25There's no blood there.
00:29:28That's so.
00:29:32Gentlemen.
00:29:34When that bullet entered this man's head,
00:29:37he had been dead for hours.
00:29:41Can you place the time of his death?
00:29:43I'd say from eight to twelve hours ago.
00:29:45Would you say that the revolver was placed in his hand
00:29:47before rigor mortis set in?
00:29:49Yes.
00:29:50Did he die from the effects of the blow on the head?
00:29:52No.
00:29:53Probably rendered him unconscious for a while.
00:29:55But that wouldn't have killed him.
00:29:56Not powerful enough.
00:29:58The blow didn't kill him.
00:29:59The bullet didn't kill him.
00:30:00And yet he's dead.
00:30:01Suppose we try to find out just what did kill him.
00:30:03Glad you thought of that, Mr. Vance.
00:30:05It's not a bad idea.
00:30:08Perhaps I'd better take another look.
00:30:13All right, boys.
00:30:15Let's pick up these clues before they get messed up here.
00:30:18All right, please.
00:30:19Just a minute, Doc.
00:30:20Please.
00:30:24Ready?
00:30:26Give me a hand, Sergeant.
00:30:27Help me lift the body over to the dead.
00:30:28Where do you want to put it?
00:30:29All right, boys.
00:30:30Where do you want to put it?
00:30:31Get this body over on the dead.
00:30:32All right, boys.
00:30:33Get this body over on the dead.
00:30:38All right, geez.
00:30:39There he is.
00:30:40All right, boy.
00:30:41That's it.
00:30:42There couldn't have been much of a struggle.
00:30:43His hair isn't even must.
00:30:44Maybe somebody slugged him and then combed his hair.
00:30:46By George.
00:30:47Now I've got it.
00:30:48Stabbed.
00:30:49Below the left shoulder blade.
00:30:50Near the spine.
00:30:52There's no external bleeding.
00:30:54Internal hemorrhage, huh?
00:30:55That's it.
00:30:56What do you think of the suicide theory now, Sergeant?
00:30:57Well, it's slightly complicated for him to shot, slugged and stabbed himself.
00:31:00Particularly in the back.
00:31:01Yes, very complicated.
00:31:02Oh, Markham.
00:31:03Yes.
00:31:04You see, there's no hole in the back of his head.
00:31:05You see, there's no hole in the back of his head.
00:31:06And then combed his hair.
00:31:07By George!
00:31:08Now I've got it.
00:31:09Stabbed.
00:31:10Below the left shoulder blade.
00:31:11Near the spine.
00:31:12There's no external bleeding.
00:31:13Internal hemorrhage, huh?
00:31:14That's it.
00:31:15What do you think of the suicide theory now, Sergeant?
00:31:16Well, it's slightly complicated for him to be shot, slugged and stabbed himself.
00:31:18Particularly in the back.
00:31:19Yeah, it's very complicated.
00:31:20Oh, Markham.
00:31:21Yes.
00:31:22You see, there's no hole in the back of his pajama jacket.
00:31:26So he couldn't have been wearing that when he was stabbed.
00:31:28But get this.
00:31:29There's a hole in the back of his coat.
00:31:32And another in his waistcoat.
00:31:34Bloodstained.
00:31:35He must have been fully dressed when he was attacked.
00:31:38That lets me out.
00:31:39I've finished.
00:31:40I suppose you want a quick autopsy?
00:31:41Yes.
00:31:42Get that body down to the morgue as soon as possible.
00:31:44Good day, gentlemen.
00:31:45Good day.
00:31:46Hey, now.
00:31:47Yes.
00:31:48Do you think there's any possible chance of that being suicide?
00:31:51What?
00:31:52All right, all right.
00:31:53Just a fair question, big boy.
00:31:54Go on home and get your hotcakes and sausage.
00:31:56You need the strength.
00:31:57Ten a second.
00:31:58Yeah.
00:31:59Right after that dead light.
00:32:00Right.
00:32:01Any report on that wire?
00:32:02Not yet, Sarge.
00:32:08Let's send a wire to this guy, Markham.
00:32:1098 East 71st Street in New York City.
00:32:12And tell him, um...
00:32:14Brisbane Coe, not aboard this train.
00:32:17Wallace, conductor.
00:32:18Train number seven.
00:32:19Sit down.
00:32:26What time did Brisbane Coe leave for Chicago?
00:32:29In time to catch the five o'clock train, sir.
00:32:32How do you know he caught the five o'clock train?
00:32:34I phoned for the reservation,
00:32:36brought him his walking stick and overcoat,
00:32:38and put his bag in the taxi.
00:32:40Ah.
00:32:41Did you remain in the house all evening?
00:32:43Why, no, sir.
00:32:44I went out about 6.30.
00:32:45It was a servant's night off.
00:32:47Everyone was out to dinner.
00:32:48Hmm.
00:32:49Did you notice anything unusual in Mr. Brisbane's manor when he left?
00:32:52Oh, now that you mention it, he was distracted and...
00:32:55and very irritable.
00:32:57Hmm.
00:32:58You say you gave him his stick?
00:32:59Yes, sir.
00:33:00What kind of stick?
00:33:01His favorite.
00:33:02An ivory-handled one.
00:33:04He never went anywhere without it, sir.
00:33:06You're quite sure he took that particular stick with him?
00:33:08Positive.
00:33:09I handed it to him myself, sir.
00:33:11Did you see him when he returned here last evening?
00:33:13Returned?
00:33:14Yes.
00:33:15I didn't know he had returned, sir.
00:33:17Then whose ivory-headed stick is that hanging over that chair in the hall?
00:33:20Sit down.
00:33:21I swear I don't know.
00:33:22Sit down.
00:33:23Steady, Gamble.
00:33:24Steady.
00:33:27Is this it?
00:33:28Is it?
00:33:30Yes, sir.
00:33:31I can't understand it.
00:33:32I suppose you saw nothing of his bag.
00:33:34Why, no, sir.
00:33:35Well, if he brought his cane back here, what did he do with his bag?
00:33:39Ah, very good, Sergeant.
00:33:40That's just the point.
00:33:41He undoubtedly left it somewhere.
00:33:42But where?
00:33:43I should think the most logical place would be the check room at the Grand Central Station.
00:33:47What kind of a bag was it?
00:33:49Just an ordinary pigskin bag, sir, with his initials BC on it.
00:33:53Is that it?
00:33:55Yeah, that looks like it.
00:34:00There's your police department receipt.
00:34:02What time was this checked?
00:34:044.45.
00:34:06Thanks, pal.
00:34:07Okay.
00:34:10Well, here it is.
00:34:12Put it here.
00:34:13Did you examine the contents?
00:34:14No.
00:34:15I brought it right up here.
00:34:16I'll open it.
00:34:17Did you find out what time this was checked?
00:34:19Yeah.
00:34:20There you are.
00:34:214.45.
00:34:24He must have gone direct from the house to the station.
00:34:26Did the attendant remember who left this?
00:34:28No.
00:34:29He said there were so many of them, but most of the time he didn't even notice the people.
00:34:33Well, there's a shaving kit, shirts, underwear, socks, collars, slippers.
00:34:42Nothing in there that a man wouldn't ordinarily take with him on a short trip.
00:34:46Except this, perhaps.
00:34:48Unsolved murders.
00:34:50That's a swell book to take to Chicago.
00:34:53That's rather odd, isn't it?
00:34:54Yes, more than that.
00:34:56Gentlemen, the mist is beginning to rise.
00:34:59I think I know at least a part of what happened here last night.
00:35:03How about this?
00:35:05Let's say that Brisbane Coe started for Chicago on a night when he knew that no one but Archer would be at home.
00:35:10He missed his train purposely.
00:35:12Checked his bag at the station and returned here to kill his brother.
00:35:16To make a perfect alibi, he planned to take a later train to Chicago.
00:35:20But something stopped him.
00:35:22And something stopped Archer Coe before he could remove his shoes last night.
00:35:25You see what I mean?
00:35:26Those shoes of Archer's?
00:35:27That bag of Brisbane's?
00:35:28His stick hanging there in the hall?
00:35:29It shouldn't have been there.
00:35:31Say, just a minute.
00:35:34Oh, uh, Gamble.
00:35:36Where did Mr. Brisbane usually put his half an overcoat when he came in?
00:35:39He always hung them in the closet, sir.
00:35:40Which closet?
00:35:41This one.
00:35:43Mr. Brisbane.
00:35:44Well, Mr. Vance, where are we now?
00:35:59I should say somewhere in the middle of the Gobi Desert.
00:36:04Well, Mr. Vance, where are we now?
00:36:08I should say somewhere in the middle of the Gobi Desert.
00:36:12Hello.
00:36:20Hello.
00:36:21What?
00:36:22Again?
00:36:24I'm right in the middle of my lunch.
00:36:26First you interview with my breakfast.
00:36:27Then you ruin my lunch.
00:36:29Don't you boys ever eat?
00:36:30No.
00:36:31I'm on a diet.
00:36:32Oh, all right.
00:36:38Hello.
00:36:39All right, I'll attend to that later.
00:36:40Get me the wagon and the fingerprint gang.
00:36:48Just a minute, fellas.
00:36:49One side, please.
00:36:50Just a moment, please.
00:36:52Ready?
00:36:53That's all.
00:36:54All right, go ahead.
00:36:55Here.
00:37:00He's been dead for hours.
00:37:02And me thinking all the time he was playing parson.
00:37:04No.
00:37:06Well, there are too many people in the world anyway.
00:37:09Mr. Vance, this is just ordinary junk.
00:37:12I'm afraid so.
00:37:14And I'd rather hope for something important.
00:37:16Which one of the two victims died first, Arthur?
00:37:18Archaco, I think.
00:37:19This one, a little later.
00:37:20And the weapon?
00:37:21The same.
00:37:22Sharp and narrow.
00:37:25Second.
00:37:26Tag and list these.
00:37:27I think I'd better fingerprint everything inside and outside here.
00:37:30Right, Captain.
00:37:31Hennessy.
00:37:32Yes.
00:37:33Look for a sharp and narrow weapon.
00:37:37Palm something?
00:37:38Well, it looks like fishing tackle.
00:37:39It's tackle, all right, but not fishing.
00:37:42Markham, we're dealing with a shrewd brain.
00:37:45The technique of this crime was very cleverly worked out.
00:37:48But something went wrong.
00:37:49Sergeant.
00:37:51Here's your order for the removal of the body.
00:37:52Thanks, Doctor.
00:37:53So long.
00:37:54I want food.
00:37:56Well, nobody's stopping you.
00:37:57And if you've got any more corpses, bring them out now, will you?
00:37:59I can't be running up and down here all day.
00:38:01What do you mean running up and down all day?
00:38:03With that swell car the city gave you?
00:38:06Yes.
00:38:07Oh.
00:38:08Nothing upsets the doctor.
00:38:36There any more before.
00:38:37Well, there things happened.
00:38:38I just want this.
00:38:39I understand peace.
00:38:40Right.
00:38:41Why is your four there?
00:38:42This area is more people to hold up.
00:38:43You to read these questions your interest in your audience,
00:38:44who will recommendcia may or may WATć‹’ce your life?
00:38:46You will tell them, eh, enough, not to let it out here.
00:38:47I'm formas of seeing this.
00:38:48Please show please.
00:38:49Yes.
00:38:50Yes, sir?
00:38:51The right thing is safe to understand
00:38:52This mean that not onlyatten you all the way to talk about
00:38:53our Mail.
00:38:54Yeah.
00:38:55It changes.
00:38:57You will help us?
00:38:59Yep, run by Grace.
00:39:00The next time is internet realm.
00:39:01Let's go.
00:39:17Hi, Captain.
00:39:19Going in to take charge?
00:39:21Well, if you hurry up and solve this case, maybe I can go home.
00:39:24Come on.
00:39:31I can handle everything if I don't get too much interference.
00:39:35Oh, Markham.
00:39:37Yes?
00:39:38You're just in time for a demonstration.
00:39:40I think I can show you how Brisbane Coe used this fishing tackle.
00:39:44He started for Chicago, and Bill needs to provide an alibi.
00:39:48He had other plans in this room.
00:39:50Watch this.
00:39:52Notice the bent pin, which is hooked on the bolt handle?
00:39:56This is attached to the string I am now pulling through the keyhole.
00:39:59If you follow the string, you will see that it passes around a pin in the wall.
00:40:03This acts as a pulley, and is also attached to a string passing through the keyhole.
00:40:08You see, the bolt is now being forced into its socket.
00:40:11Well, upon my word.
00:40:13I now pull the first string through the keyhole, and then the second string.
00:40:17And with it comes the pin, leaving no evidence.
00:40:20Now let me in.
00:40:23It worked?
00:40:24Yes, it worked.
00:40:25Well, that explains that, then.
00:40:27Very clever.
00:40:28It could have been done that way.
00:40:30But if Brisbane killed Archer Coe, who killed Brisbane and hung him in the closet?
00:40:34Why did he do it?
00:40:36That's what we want to find out, isn't it?
00:40:38Exactly.
00:40:39Yeah.
00:40:40Gentlemen.
00:40:42Two persons planned the murder of Archer Coe.
00:40:44Two?
00:40:45What?
00:40:46But their paths crossed.
00:40:47Brisbane was one of them.
00:40:48The other?
00:40:49I've got it.
00:40:50The Chinese cook, they're full of those tricks.
00:40:52But get this.
00:40:53Dr. DeRema said the Coe was struck over the head with a blunt instrument.
00:40:58This poker would answer that description, wouldn't it?
00:41:00Yes.
00:41:01And that certainly looks like dried blood.
00:41:03It certainly does.
00:41:04But what about those short, coarse hairs?
00:41:07They don't look like coes.
00:41:09No.
00:41:10Well, Mr. Vance, why didn't you find that when you looked in there this morning?
00:41:15It wasn't in there this morning.
00:41:18Besides, it doesn't belong in this room.
00:41:20It belongs downstairs in the library.
00:41:22Is that you, cap'nain'?
00:41:24What's the matter with you?
00:41:25What is it, cap'nain'?
00:41:44Now, what is it, cap'nain'?
00:41:48Oh good boy captain. This dog's been struck a nasty bull. That explains the coarse hairs on the poker.
00:42:12Whose dog is this? I don't know. I mean I've often seen it in the vacant lots.
00:42:17Just tell the truth, Gamble. Yes, why don't you? It belongs to the lady next door, sir.
00:42:28Ah, Hennessy, get that fellow to a bet as fast as you can, will you? Yes, sir.
00:42:37Easy, easy, easy. Now Gamble, let's have the name of the lady next door. Doris Delafield.
00:42:46Yes, I'm Miss Delafield. Won't you sit down, gentlemen?
00:42:50Thank you. I'm sorry I didn't win you a trophy at the dog show. You're quite a fancier, aren't you?
00:42:54Yes, somewhat. I'm interested in one of your dogs. The Doberman.
00:42:58You mean Figaro? I wonder if I could have a look at him.
00:43:01I'm terribly sorry. You know, he slipped his leash last night and ran away.
00:43:05I've notified the police my maid's been scouring the neighborhood trying to find him.
00:43:10Well, did she inquire at Mr. Ko's house next door?
00:43:14Well, I don't know.
00:43:17You and Mr. Ko have been good friends, haven't you?
00:43:20I know him. Why?
00:43:25Your dog was found in his house this morning, badly wounded.
00:43:30What?
00:43:31Have you any idea how he got there?
00:43:33No.
00:43:34Do you suppose he would follow someone into the house?
00:43:38Why, I hardly think...
00:43:44Now, what are you driving at?
00:43:46Mr. Archer Ko and his brother were murdered last night.
00:43:51Murdered? I was afraid that...
00:43:56Just a moment.
00:43:58Hello. Is that Miss Doris Delafield's apartment?
00:44:02Would you please tell Miss Delafield that we couldn't get the reservations for her and Mr. Grassy on A deck?
00:44:07And ask her if B deck would be satisfactory.
00:44:10Miss Delafield will not be sailing.
00:44:12You can cancel the reservation for them both.
00:44:15Both?
00:44:17Do you mind telling me whom the other reservation was for?
00:44:22I refuse to answer that question.
00:44:24Would it be Mr. Grassy?
00:44:27But I am Mr. Grassy.
00:44:29And if I didn't cancel those reservations, who did?
00:44:32What?
00:44:33Miss Delafield.
00:44:34Oh, no, no, no, she didn't.
00:44:35No, really, there's been a mistake.
00:44:37As soon as I can find out about this, I'll call you back.
00:44:45I don't think you'll find Miss Delafield at home just now.
00:44:48And as for the consolation of your steamship reservations, we regret very much that it was necessary.
00:44:53Who are you?
00:44:54This is Mr. Markham, the district attorney.
00:44:58Oh, I'm honored, but I'm afraid I don't quite understand.
00:45:01It's about this.
00:45:03As a matter of fact, Mr. Cole didn't commit suicide, he was murdered.
00:45:06Murdered?
00:45:07Would you mind coming along with us?
00:45:09Just a little matter of comparing fingerprints.
00:45:12No, not in the least.
00:45:15No, not in the least.
00:45:42I think that's all.
00:46:00Found anything yet?
00:46:01The one taken from the doorknob is too blurred for identification.
00:46:04But this one is very clear.
00:46:06It appears to be that of Liang, the Chinese cook.
00:46:34The Chinese cook.
00:46:40Any luck?
00:46:42No, not yet.
00:46:43It must be here somewhere.
00:46:45I'm positive that the dagger that killed the coals belongs in that sheath.
00:46:50Tired, mother?
00:46:51No, no.
00:47:04Well.
00:47:11That's strange.
00:47:12What is?
00:47:13The Tingya vase is missing.
00:47:15It's the most valuable in the whole collection.
00:47:17That's all that's left of it.
00:47:20Well, I'm not mistaken.
00:47:21That's blood.
00:47:22Blood?
00:47:25Markham, I'm coming more and more to the belief that Archer Cole was killed in this room.
00:47:28That poker, this dagger sheath, now these fragments, all here.
00:47:31But Vance, do you mean to tell me that the dead man walked upstairs?
00:47:36I'm not trying to tell you anything but the facts.
00:47:39It's the most remarkable case in my experience.
00:47:47Find anything, Cap?
00:47:49Yes, sir.
00:47:50Plenty.
00:47:58Oh, uh, Mr. Reed.
00:47:59Oh, uh, Mr. Reed.
00:48:00Oh, yes, Mr. Van.
00:48:01Would you, uh, step in for a moment, please?
00:48:02Why, certainly.
00:48:06Good smoke?
00:48:07No, thanks.
00:48:08Did you, uh, notice that the Tingya was missing?
00:48:13Missing?
00:48:18Why, it was here yesterday evening.
00:48:20At what time?
00:48:21At about 6.30 or 7 o'clock.
00:48:24I came back to talk to Mr. Cole.
00:48:25About what?
00:48:26Well, as a matter of fact, I, I wanted to quit my job as his secretary.
00:48:32Oh, you'd been having some difficulties with him?
00:48:35It was rather a personal matter.
00:48:37I wanted his permission to marry Miss Lake.
00:48:39What did he say to that?
00:48:41Hmm.
00:48:42He ordered me out.
00:48:44You went?
00:48:45Yes.
00:48:46Where?
00:48:47I went to find Miss Lake.
00:48:48I thought she was at the Kennel Club.
00:48:49But I had a puncture on the way, so it was rather late when I got there.
00:48:52She'd already left with Sir Thomas MacDonald.
00:48:55Then I came home and went directly to bed.
00:48:58Did you hear anything or see anything when you came into the house?
00:49:01No.
00:49:02But after I'd been in bed for a while, I heard some noises downstairs.
00:49:05I opened the door and looked down, but it was only Liang, the Chinese cook, coming in.
00:49:11Was he customarily noisy in entering the house?
00:49:15Oh.
00:49:16As a matter of fact, it's the first time I ever heard him come in.
00:49:19Indeed.
00:49:21Well, I think that's all, Mr. Reed. Thank you.
00:49:24If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.
00:49:25Right, right.
00:49:26Good night.
00:49:27Good night.
00:49:31I think I'd check up on that Kennel Club alibi.
00:49:33I will.
00:49:35You might have those fragments checked for fingerprints, if you will.
00:49:37Yes.
00:49:39Meanwhile, I'll do a little exploring in the kitchen.
00:49:55Why, Mr. Vance, I thought, get Markham.
00:50:04Mr. Liang, I believe, you're the cook.
00:50:08We cook.
00:50:10You can drop the pitch in English.
00:50:12That isn't necessary with me.
00:50:14Where did you go to school?
00:50:16Columbia University.
00:50:17Ah, that's considerable education for a cook, isn't it?
00:50:20Mr. Koh employed me because I know a great deal about Chinese porcelain.
00:50:23Ah, I see.
00:50:25Ah, that's a very lovely piece of Ting Yao, isn't it?
00:50:28How did he get broken?
00:50:30I don't know, sir.
00:50:31I found the pieces in the waste basket in the library.
00:50:33You want me, Vance?
00:50:35Oh, yes.
00:50:37See that, Markham?
00:50:39More blood spots on the inside.
00:50:41Apparently, the murderer dropped the dagger in here to hide it.
00:50:43But he dropped it too hard and the vase broke.
00:50:47When did you find these pieces?
00:50:49This morning.
00:50:50This morning?
00:50:51You sure it wasn't last night, about eight o'clock, let us say?
00:50:55No, sir.
00:50:57I did not get in until after midnight.
00:50:59I'm sure Mr. Reid or Mr. Gamble will tell you that.
00:51:02What time did you find the poker?
00:51:04The poker?
00:51:06Yes, the poker.
00:51:08The one you hid in the Chinese chest in Mr. Archer's room this afternoon.
00:51:11But I don't know what you mean.
00:51:13Oh, yes, you do.
00:51:14I was behind the door in that room when you hid it.
00:51:17Let me handle this, Mr. Vance.
00:51:19Are you going to talk?
00:51:20Or do I have to make you?
00:51:22Wait.
00:51:23I'll tell you the truth.
00:51:24Well, spit it out.
00:51:26When I returned to my room here about eight o'clock last night...
00:51:29Ah, I thought so.
00:51:31I heard angry muffled voices in the library.
00:51:34Then a dull sound as of someone falling.
00:51:37I stood at my door here and listened.
00:51:40Then I heard footsteps cross the kitchen and go out the back door.
00:51:44And then?
00:51:46I walked up the corridor and everything was very quiet.
00:51:49I opened the library door and looked in.
00:51:52The furniture was overturned.
00:51:55The poker was there, the desk was disarranged,
00:51:58and the valuable tenue vase was broken.
00:52:01I thought there must be something wrong.
00:52:03So I went upstairs and looked into Mr. Coe's bedroom.
00:52:07He was dead.
00:52:09Fearing that I might be suspected,
00:52:11I went back to the library and picked up the broken pieces of the vase.
00:52:15And together with the poker, I took them to my room.
00:52:18And knowing that you were alone in the house, you were afraid you might be suspected.
00:52:22So you hid the weapons and left.
00:52:24Yes, sir.
00:52:26You returned to the house about midnight.
00:52:28And purposely made a lot of noise so as to establish your alibi, is that right?
00:52:31Yes, sir.
00:52:32All right then, where'd you put the dagger?
00:52:35I did not find the dagger.
00:52:37Don't give me that.
00:52:38What did you do with it after you stuck it in Archer Coe's back?
00:52:41I've got it, Mr. Markham.
00:52:42Yes?
00:52:43What?
00:52:44The fingerprint on this broken fragment belongs to the Italian, Eduardo Grassi.
00:52:49Well, Mr. Vance, looks like somebody else miscalculated.
00:52:53Yes, it fits.
00:52:54Oh, that doesn't prove anything.
00:52:57What about this?
00:52:59Where did you get it?
00:53:01It was in Archer Coe's pocket.
00:53:02What were you doing outside the drawing room window last night?
00:53:03Why?
00:53:04I wanted to be sure that he was alone.
00:53:05Why?
00:53:06For weeks we had been negotiating for the sale of his collection to the museum at Milan.
00:53:07It meant everything to me.
00:53:08He kept raising the price, but on Monday we came to an understanding.
00:53:09And I cabled the museum that I had succeeded.
00:53:10And last night he turned me down.
00:53:11Because he saw me with Miss Delafield.
00:53:12Let me explain.
00:53:13Archer was extremely jealous of me.
00:53:14Well, you can't blame me for that.
00:53:15You can't blame me for that.
00:53:16You can't blame me for that.
00:53:17What are you doing outside the drawing room window last night?
00:53:18Why?
00:53:19I wanted to be sure that he was alone.
00:53:20Why?
00:53:21For weeks we had been negotiating for the sale of his collection to the museum at Milan.
00:53:23It meant everything to me.
00:53:24He kept raising the price, but on Monday we came to an understanding.
00:53:28And I cabled the museum that I had succeeded.
00:53:31And last night he turned me down.
00:53:33Because he saw me with Miss Delafield.
00:53:37Let me explain.
00:53:38Archer was extremely jealous of me.
00:53:41Well, you can't blame him for that.
00:53:43You went there to threaten him, didn't you?
00:53:45Which I had every right to do.
00:53:46I told him I would use any means to make him fulfill his contract.
00:53:50He laughed at me.
00:53:51Said that he would smash every piece in his collection before he'd let me have it.
00:53:54So you picked up the poker and did a little smashing on your own account, eh?
00:53:58I did not.
00:53:59Let me have the fragment, will you?
00:54:02You know how that was broken?
00:54:04Tignoreau vase?
00:54:06With blood stains on the inside and your fingerprint on the outside.
00:54:10I don't know.
00:54:11Sergeant.
00:54:12I think you better book him.
00:54:13Right.
00:54:15Come on.
00:54:16Let's get out of that monkey suit.
00:54:19Let's get going.
00:54:20Come on.
00:54:21Don't worry.
00:54:22I'm not running away.
00:54:23You telling me?
00:54:24I suspected the Italian all along.
00:54:31Exactly.
00:54:33But why should Grassi also stab Brisbane?
00:54:36And what about the Doberman?
00:54:37You see, Markham, we have nearly all the pieces of the puzzle, but none of them seems to fit.
00:54:42Here they are.
00:54:43This isn't it.
00:54:44This is the basement.
00:54:45I know.
00:54:46Come on.
00:54:47I just want to see where this goes.
00:55:17Oh, good evening, sir.
00:55:18Gamble.
00:55:19By the way, uh, how long have you been using that name?
00:55:24All my life, sir.
00:55:25Hmm.
00:55:26Doobard checked Gamble's fingerprints at the identification bureau, and who do you think he turns out to be?
00:55:31Not Gamble?
00:55:32No.
00:55:33Atlantic Eddie.
00:55:34He used to work the boats on both sides of the ocean.
00:55:36Honestly, Mr. Vance, I haven't turned a trick in five years.
00:55:39Oh, that's all right, Eddie.
00:55:40I just wanted to let you know that we're old pals.
00:55:43Sir, someone slipped in the back door and went into one of the front rooms.
00:55:57Well, Miss Detherfield.
00:55:59Don't be surprised, gentlemen.
00:56:00I'm used to coming in here like this.
00:56:02You seem to know your way around here pretty well.
00:56:05As a district attorney, you're responsible for this case, aren't you?
00:56:08That's right.
00:56:09Well, I'm tired of detectives.
00:56:10I'm tired of being spied on.
00:56:12All you want to know is who killed Archer Coe, isn't it?
00:56:15Naturally.
00:56:16Well, I did.
00:56:17What?
00:56:18Yes.
00:56:19And there isn't a jury on earth will convict me when they hear my story.
00:56:23You don't believe me, do you?
00:56:25You were wondering this afternoon how my dog, Figaro, could get into this house.
00:56:30Well, he was following me.
00:56:32He was defending me when he was struck.
00:56:35Well, where did you kill Mr. Coe?
00:56:37In his bedroom.
00:56:39What kind of lipstick do you use?
00:56:41Lipstick?
00:56:42What's that got to do with it?
00:56:44Is that yours?
00:56:46Yes, that's mine.
00:56:50While I was struggling with Archer, my bag dropped on the floor and everything spilt out.
00:56:54Won't do, Miss Detherfield. It's an old trick.
00:56:59It's not a trick.
00:57:00I didn't realize that you were so fond of Mr. Grassi.
00:57:03Mr. Grassi has nothing to do with it.
00:57:05Take me down to the station.
00:57:06I'll say nothing more until I get an attorney.
00:57:08Help!
00:57:09Help!
00:57:10Help!
00:57:11Help!
00:57:12Help!
00:57:13Help!
00:57:39Hey.
00:57:41There.
00:57:43This guy's been stabbed, Hennessey.
00:57:56Is this it, Mr. Vance?
00:57:57Yes, that's it. Thank you very much.
00:58:02First you spoil my breakfast. Then you break up my lunch.
00:58:05Now you pull me out of bed in the middle of the night.
00:58:08And this fellow not even dead.
00:58:10Why don't you put that in your report, Doc?
00:58:12Of course, fingerprints would never pick up on that silk handle.
00:58:16But it fits perfectly.
00:58:18Where do you find it, Sergeant?
00:58:20Under the bed.
00:58:21Congratulations.
00:58:23That's all right, Mr. Vance.
00:58:25Three crimes with the same weapon, Markham.
00:58:30Tom, what is it?
00:58:33What's happened?
00:58:35I don't know, dear. Somebody stabbed me.
00:58:38Is it serious, Doctor?
00:58:39Oh, no.
00:58:40I gave him three grains of sodium ametold to quiet his nerves.
00:58:43He'll be all right.
00:58:44I'd like to rent a room here till they finish this case.
00:58:50Poor darling.
00:58:51I wish I hadn't got you mixed up in all this.
00:58:54You shouldn't have come here.
00:58:55Let me see this through alone.
00:58:57Oh, I won't leave you.
00:58:59Can't we get away from here?
00:59:01We leave tomorrow. Together.
00:59:03Well, what do you think about it, Doc?
00:59:05Well, the thrust punctured the median basilic vein and caused a hemorrhage.
00:59:09Could the wound have been self-inflicted, Doctor?
00:59:12I'm the city butcher, not the detective.
00:59:15Don't bother me with any murders after three tomorrow.
00:59:18I'm going to the World Series.
00:59:20Hey, Doc.
00:59:21Hold me the score between anythings, will you?
00:59:23Get these people out of this.
00:59:25What are they waiting for?
00:59:26We just want to ask you a few questions, Sir Thomas.
00:59:29You say that when you were stabbed, you saw nothing, huh?
00:59:33That's right.
00:59:34It was dark.
00:59:36I heard a noise and jumped out of bed.
00:59:39Somebody threw a chair and just missed my head and struck the window.
00:59:43I shouted for help and ran towards the door.
00:59:46Then I felt a sharp pain in my arm as I lost consciousness.
00:59:50Knife by a ghost.
00:59:52That's a hot one.
00:59:53I think he'd done it himself.
00:59:55How dare you, sir?
00:59:56That's not fair.
00:59:57Do you know anything about that?
00:59:59Where'd you find it?
01:00:01Under your bed.
01:00:03I never saw it before.
01:00:06Yeah.
01:00:07Like I never saw a pair of handcuffs.
01:00:09You've no right to question him now and his condition.
01:00:13Rather funny.
01:00:22You see what I see in Archer Coe's room?
01:00:28I have a suspicion that whoever killed the Coe's came from this house.
01:00:33Probably from this room.
01:00:39Gentlemen, I think I can fit the pieces of this jigsaw puzzle together.
01:00:46Now here is East 71st Street.
01:00:48This is the Coe House.
01:00:50The yard.
01:00:51And the apartment house next door.
01:00:53Now let's have a look inside.
01:00:56This is a McDonald's apartment.
01:00:59Directly opposite is the window of Archer Coe's bedroom.
01:01:02Underneath McDonald's apartment.
01:01:04The cozy little nest of Miss Delafield and her temporary guest, Mr. Grassi.
01:01:10This is the elevator.
01:01:12And here are the stairs that lead directly to the back entrance.
01:01:15From there, it's easy to reach the back entrance to the Coe House across the yard.
01:01:19Now.
01:01:23That's the front hall.
01:01:24And here's the library.
01:01:27On Wednesday evening between 7.30 and 8 o'clock, Archer Coe was sitting alone in that room.
01:01:33Now remember, it was the servants night off.
01:01:37The killer must have known this when he came in the back door.
01:01:41He was so intent upon what he was planning to do,
01:01:45that he must have let the back door open.
01:01:48Because from somewhere in that vacant lot came a dog.
01:01:52A Doberman Pinscher.
01:01:54Belonging to Doris Delafield.
01:01:57He saw the back door standing open and went in.
01:02:02Meanwhile, the killer was moving along the hall toward the library.
01:02:06Making absolutely sure that Archer Coe was alone.
01:02:10He knew exactly where he was going,
01:02:13and exactly what he was going to do.
01:02:16He came so silently that it must have startled Archer Coe
01:02:20when he looked up and saw him carefully closing the doors.
01:02:23It is my conjecture, gentlemen, that a terrific argument was in place.
01:02:27Archer Coe must have struck him.
01:02:30And as he fell back, he picked up the poker as the first weapon that came into his hand.
01:02:35He struck Archer Coe on the head.
01:02:38Coe collapsed across the desk.
01:02:40His hands groping in the drawer of the desk for his gun.
01:02:44Then, in a blind rage of the moment, the killer saw a Chinese dagger.
01:02:48He seized it and stabbed Archer Coe in the back.
01:02:54Coe probably fell to the floor.
01:02:58Meantime, our Doberman Pinscher was coming closer and closer,
01:03:02probably attracted by the sound of the struggle in the library.
01:03:06As the killer opened the door to escape,
01:03:08he saw the Doberman Pinscher in the hall coming toward him.
01:03:11He again picked up the poker as the dog entered the room.
01:03:13Through to the instinct of his brain, the dog sensed an enemy.
01:03:19He leaped.
01:03:21The killer struck and the dog fell, badly wounded.
01:03:24Now he tried to hide the dagger in the ting-ya vase.
01:03:27He blocked it too hard and the porcelain broke into bits.
01:03:31He picked up the dagger again and went out the same way he came in.
01:03:35Meanwhile, Coe slowly regained consciousness and pulled himself to his feet.
01:03:44You remember, gentlemen, that Dr. Doremus said Coe died of an internal hemorrhage.
01:03:49That is the key to the whole situation.
01:03:52Archer Coe, already a dying man, walked upstairs.
01:03:57And what is even more terrible, he did not know that he had been stabbed.
01:04:00He went to his room and, feeling a little faint probably,
01:04:05he removed his coat and vest and hung them in the closet where we found them.
01:04:09He put on his pajama top and went to the window and raised the shade.
01:04:15Can you imagine the killer's emotions when, from some place in the apartment house,
01:04:22across the vacant lot, he looked over and saw the man he thought he had killed,
01:04:27standing there at a window.
01:04:30He knew then that he had to go back and complete his job to save himself.
01:04:35Feeling very faint by now,
01:04:38Archer Coe went from the window to the chair beside his desk,
01:04:42where he sat down.
01:04:44There, he started to remove his shoes.
01:04:47You remember just how we found him.
01:04:50In the very act of removing them,
01:04:52before he could get one of them entirely off,
01:04:56he died.
01:04:58I don't think he ever knew what killed him.
01:05:02Now we come to the most awful part of the tragedy.
01:05:06Brisbane Coe came back to the house with a cleverly worked out plan for killing his brother.
01:05:12He also knew that it was a servant's night out,
01:05:15and that he would not be disturbed.
01:05:16He went down the hall to the library,
01:05:19and from the drawer of the desk he took Archer Coe's own revolver and put it into his pocket.
01:05:26Then turning out the light on the desk, he went out of the room.
01:05:30He hung his stick over the chair in the hall,
01:05:33and tiptoed up the stairs, and into Archer Coe's room.
01:05:38He saw his brother sitting in his easy chair, apparently asleep.
01:05:42I can see him tiptoe across the room.
01:05:47And from somewhere just across the desk,
01:05:50he took out the revolver,
01:05:52and with careful aim,
01:05:54he pulled the trigger.
01:05:58Meantime, the killer,
01:06:01believing that he had only wounded Archer Coe,
01:06:04came back by the same route to finish his job.
01:06:07Then Brisbane closed the window and lowered the shade.
01:06:10And returning to the body,
01:06:13he carefully placed the gun in Archer's hand,
01:06:17as though it had been suicide.
01:06:19Then he went to the door,
01:06:23and with the two pieces of string,
01:06:25the pins,
01:06:27and the darning needle,
01:06:29he was able to bolt the door on the inside,
01:06:32just as I showed you.
01:06:34A very clever device, gentlemen,
01:06:36which he had discovered in the book of unsolved murders,
01:06:40which we found in his suitcase.
01:06:43Then, gentlemen, Brisbane went on down the stairs,
01:06:47little knowing what awaited him there.
01:06:50The killer mistook Brisbane for Archer Coe,
01:06:54and drove the dagger into Brisbane's back.
01:06:57Then, to hide the body,
01:06:59he dragged it into the closet.
01:07:03I doubt if he even discovered his mistake until the next day.
01:07:07That's great.
01:07:09But who did all that?
01:07:11Well, you can search me.
01:07:13I'm going stroy.
01:07:15You can include me in that, Sergeant.
01:07:17Haven't you got any ideas at all, Vance?
01:07:19Markham, it's a maze of conflicting clues.
01:07:21Any one of seven people might have done it.
01:07:24But we couldn't convict seven people, Mr. Vance.
01:07:27You couldn't convict one with the evidence you got.
01:07:30Gentlemen, I'm afraid we're completely stopped.
01:07:36Licked.
01:07:38Well, I hate to admit it, but it looks that way.
01:07:40Vance, in all the years we've worked together,
01:07:42I've never heard you say that before.
01:07:44I know. I'm sorry, Markham.
01:07:47Well, what are we going to do about it?
01:07:48I don't know.
01:07:50Are you sure you checked up on all the alibis?
01:07:52Every one of them.
01:07:53And you've gone over the fingerprint situation with your boy?
01:07:56Yes, sir.
01:07:57Well, we've slipped up somewhere, Sergeant.
01:07:59But there must be something that we can get our teeth into.
01:08:05Markham, I suggest that you dismiss this case.
01:08:08What?
01:08:09Dismiss it?
01:08:10Yes, turn all the suspects loose.
01:08:12I can just see all the newspapers in this town
01:08:14screaming for a new district attorney.
01:08:17Well, we can probably cover you up all right, Mr. Markham.
01:08:19I've said it was suicide all along.
01:08:21Yes, I know.
01:08:22We could put that solution on it, but I hate to do it.
01:08:25All right, Sergeant.
01:08:26Go ahead.
01:08:27Turn him loose.
01:08:28Turn him loose?
01:08:29Yes.
01:08:30Well, Mr. Vance, this is once we're both stuck.
01:08:37When you give up, Vance, I'm something.
01:08:40Oh, I haven't given up.
01:08:42I have another idea.
01:08:43What?
01:08:44If it works, I'll have your killer for you in half an hour.
01:08:47I'm going to arrange a little meeting with him now.
01:08:49What?
01:08:50Would you let me dismiss all the suspects?
01:08:52Yeah.
01:08:53That's just what I wanted you to do.
01:09:03Hello?
01:09:04Uh, this is Mr. Vance.
01:09:07I hope I haven't disturbed you.
01:09:10See, I wonder if you'd do me a little favor.
01:09:13Mr. Markham.
01:09:14Yes.
01:09:15I'll see you a minute.
01:09:17That suicide story might work all right for Archer Coe,
01:09:20but I forgot all about Brisbane.
01:09:22Well, never mind about that now.
01:09:24Just release the suspects as I told you.
01:09:26All right.
01:09:27That's it.
01:09:30Yes?
01:09:32That's right.
01:09:33At 4.30.
01:09:34And just get him into an argument.
01:09:37Oh, I'll have him with me.
01:09:38I'm depending on his instinct.
01:09:41That's right.
01:09:42Thanks.
01:09:44If we can catch him off his guard,
01:09:46I think he'll give himself away.
01:09:48Come on, Markham.
01:09:49We've got to get there before 4.25.
01:09:52Mr. Vance.
01:09:54They're in the library now.
01:09:57Oh, darling.
01:09:58Let me help you.
01:09:59All right, dear.
01:10:20Well, that's the first time we've used bloodhounds in police work
01:10:22since I wore a high-button shoe.
01:10:24On red flannel underwear.
01:10:25Oh, I always wear red flannel underwear.
01:10:27So do I.
01:10:29I want your bridal suite on the...
01:10:32On the coronia.
01:10:33They're sailing at midnight.
01:10:34That's right.
01:10:37Sailing at midnight.
01:10:39Lady MacDonald.
01:10:41Is it the title that dazzles you so much?
01:10:43Or is it the fortune she'll inherit
01:10:44that makes her so attractive, Sir Thomas?
01:10:46Raymond, are you crazy?
01:10:47It isn't the first time a fortune has bought a title.
01:10:49It so happens I'm not in need of a fortune.
01:10:51Possibly you are.
01:10:52Raymond, you've no right to interfere this way.
01:10:53No right?
01:10:54Well, I'll take that right.
01:10:56You think you're both sailing at midnight?
01:10:57Well, it won't work.
01:10:59You're going all right, Sir Thomas.
01:11:00But you're going along.
01:11:01Really?
01:11:02You're going now, or else?
01:11:03No!
01:11:16Raymond!
01:11:22Ah, the poker again, huh?
01:11:28Take them off!
01:11:29Take them off!
01:11:30No!
01:11:32Take them off!
01:11:37Take them off!
01:11:38Take them off, will you?
01:11:39Will you take them off?
01:11:41Help!
01:11:47Here, hold him.
01:11:48Why did you kill Archiko?
01:11:49Why did you kill him?
01:11:50I didn't mean to kill him.
01:11:51But you did, eh?
01:11:52I tell you, I didn't mean to kill him.
01:11:53He struck me when I told him I wanted to marry Hilda.
01:11:56And I lost my head.
01:11:57And I hit him with a poker.
01:11:59I don't remember anything after that.
01:12:01What about Brisbane?
01:12:02There was a terrible mistake.
01:12:03And McDonald?
01:12:05I still would kill him if I could.
01:12:09There's your man, Sergeant.
01:12:11You made a fatal mistake, Reid, when you reached for that poker.
01:12:14Somebody swipe my bracelets.
01:12:15You drop them in the pantry.
01:12:17Oh.
01:12:18All right, Hennessy.
01:12:19Leave down booking.
01:12:20All right.
01:12:21I want to thank you very much for your cooperation.
01:12:23Not at all.
01:12:24It was Sir Thomas.
01:12:25I telephoned from your office, Markham.
01:12:26He very cleverly helped us stage this little scene.
01:12:29We have to thank the dog for the rest.
01:12:32Well, we did it again, Mr. Vance.
01:12:35Congratulations, Sergeant.
01:12:37I'll certainly mention you in my story to the papers.
01:12:40Oh, that's all right, Mr. Vance.
01:12:41Ha, ha.
01:12:42Ha.
