00:30There was a really somber atmosphere and now there is a darker side to Tell City.
00:37This coroner determined it to be a suicide.
00:41It just didn't make sense that you would kill yourself that way.
00:44Why is everybody lying?
00:46I'm telling you everything I know.
00:48Rumors around the area, people talk.
00:50I kind of believe that he did kill himself because I don't know who would want to murder him.
00:54You're the last person to see Dave and the next person that sees him he's dead.
00:59I didn't touch a gun.
01:01What exactly happened at this crime scene?
01:29David is my big brother.
01:30He's seven years older than me.
01:31He was the baby until I came along.
01:33David had a son and stepdaughter in Tell City and his son was going to have twin boys and he was so excited about that.
01:41Me and my friend had went to my brother's house to see him. David lived out there alone. As soon as we got there, his truck was backed in backwards.
01:48So I'd never seen him back his truck in. He always pulled in. He knocked on the door. Nobody came.
01:55But the odd thing was, usually if my brother would leave, he would put his dog outside. And she wasn't around. And she wasn't around.
02:02So we thought maybe he had left and took the dog with him. He did huntin' and fishin' and he did huntin' and fishin' and he'd put his dog outside. And she wasn't around.
02:09So we thought maybe he had left and took the dog with him. He did huntin' and fishin' and he had a lot of friends. You know, he was an active person.
02:21We didn't have no reason to think anything happened. He didn't have no reason to think anything happened.
02:27And he had a lot of friends. He was an active person. We didn't have no reason to think anything happened.
02:38to him.
02:43Hi. I have lived in the area 20 years. I moved to Tell City and started working at the Alpine. The Alpine is a sports bar. And I loved it. I like everybody.
02:57Everybody likes, seems like everybody likes each other. I don't know. Hi.
03:03One day I was bartending and David's son came in the bar and asked me if I had seen his dad.
03:16David was a regular. He came in, not every night, but he came in a lot. He was well liked. Seemed like everybody wanted to hang out with David. And he always had people around him.
03:26His family was really worried about where he was, but I hadn't seen him.
03:31I was a year and seven months older than David. I called David's phone, but he wasn't there. We were always a close family. And he never called me back. So, you know, it was concerning.
03:58Dave's son and stepdaughter had not seen him for a few days. And so they were concerned. They went out several places looking for him. They went around town to people they knew. And on March 4th, they drove out to David's house.
04:17911. We've been looking for my stepfather. It's David Weidman. And my brother just going in the house and founding men. He's laying in the floor of the shop with the gun.
04:35Nobody else is in the residence with him. Right right now. Everybody's out. We're going to get somebody right away. OK? OK.

06:07There was blood spatter
06:09The blood was consistent
06:11with dropping immediately to the floor
06:15and bleeding out
06:17The holster was at the scene
06:21A deputada coronavírus, que estava na cena,
06:25fez a determinação que o shot foi self-inflicted.
06:29Em sua estimation,
06:32isso foi um caso de suicídio
06:35e que não ia haverá autopsia.
06:38Sem autopsia,
06:41muitas coisas podem ser aprendido, não se encontram.
06:46Mas, em minha opinião,
06:48eram coisas que se encontram,
06:51que indicavam que havia mais a esta história
06:54do que o que apareceu.
06:57Durante o suicídio,
06:59muitas vezes a vítima
07:01vai perder o controle
07:04e derrotar a arma.
07:06Para o revólver ainda estar
07:08na sua mão esquerda,
07:10isso é algo que não é perigoso.
07:18Minha mãe,
07:21ela me chamou.
07:25Ela disse que David estava morto.
07:32Eu não sei, eu só me hunguia
07:33porque eu não queria ouvir.
07:35Eu não sei.
07:37E aí eu só fui embora
07:38e fui embora para um pouco de dias
07:39e não consegui acordar.
07:41Eu não consegui acreditar que ele estava morto.
07:46Ele foi meu melhor amigo.
07:50Ele foi meu melhor amigo.
07:53Não só meu irmão,
07:55mas meu melhor amigo.
07:56Eu tenho todos esses de David.
08:05Estes são plantas plantas.
08:087 ou 8 anos
08:09antes de ele morrer,
08:11ele foi diagnosticado com canção,
08:13com canção de canção.
08:14O canção nunca me deslouou.
08:16Ele ainda foi procurando e pesquisando.
08:19Ele nunca parou de trabalhar.
08:21Nós dizemos que era um suicídio,
08:23e eu disse que não era.
08:25Eu não sei se que ele não fazia.
08:27Ele ama vida.
08:29Tudo bem.
08:29Eu ia ir para o meu irmão e visitar ele,
08:32porque se você gostou de fazer algo,
08:33ir para o David.
08:34Ele está fazendo algo.
08:35Fica para o fogo,
08:37ou grilando algo.
08:39Ele queria divertir.
08:40E ele queria divertir.
08:42E ele queria todo mundo around ele
08:42para ganhar um tempo.
08:43Ele levava muita gente em casa.
08:45kept him at his house, fed him, gave him food, whatever, you know.
08:50He didn't know no danger.
08:53He would pick up hitchhikers, he didn't care.
08:55Everybody was his friend.
08:57That's his problem, I think. He trusted everybody.
09:05We thought at the time that it was suspicious that David is right-handed,
09:10but yet his gun was in his left hand.
09:13It just didn't make sense.
09:14Definitely an autopsy should have been conducted.
09:25David was supposed to be cremated.
09:29And so we went to the funeral home,
09:31told him we did not want the cremation to go ahead,
09:34and we wanted an autopsy conducted,
09:36because we did not think it was suicide.
09:39They told me they would get back with me,
09:41so waited hours and hours.
09:44No one ever called me back, so I was getting worried.
09:49Donna had called in and said that she did not believe it could have been a suicide.
09:55and she said that he is right-handed, not left-handed,
10:01and the gun was found in his left hand.
10:04The information that came to the detective who was in charge of this case,
10:09he was able to go to the coroner and convince them that there should be an autopsy.
10:14It was very fortunate that they were able to stop the cremation.
10:22What do you think that is?
10:23Well, I think it might be part of an arm or a leg.
10:26I'm a forensic pathologist, started in 1978, so that's over 40 years.
10:33I did receive message that they were suspicious of this particular case,
10:38so they asked me to come to do an autopsy examination,
10:41which I did at the funeral home in Tell City, Indiana.
10:47What I found is that there was a large wound on the top of his head,
10:51and a gunshot exit wound.
10:54I found an entrance wound of the skin and of the bone behind the right ear.
10:59Sometimes the end of the barrel of the weapon actually leaves an imprint of the barrel itself,
11:05but he did not have that.
11:06When you combine that with the scene investigation,
11:12then the logistics of trying to hold the gun in your left hand
11:16and shoot yourself behind your right ear is rather difficult, if not impossible.
11:23The other thing is this particular weapon had a long barrel to it.
11:28It was, I believe, a 10-inch barrel, which would make it even more difficult
11:32because then you'd have to hold it 10 inches away
11:35towards the back of your head and aiming in an upward direction.
11:41That would make me actually think that this was not a suicide,
11:47that it was a staged scene.
11:49We will not go home.
12:15We will not sleep.
12:16Weedman was lying on the living room floor with a gunshot wound to the head.
12:26At first, investigators thought he'd killed himself.
12:29Just a few days later, an autopsy revealed he'd been murdered.
12:32It was set up and staged to look like he had taken his own life.
12:46We were so, you know, relieved that it wasn't a suicide,
12:56but, you know, it was just a senseless thing.
12:59We were just, you know, wondering why would someone murder my brother
13:03who has never hurt anyone in his life
13:05and has always been, you know, helpful to people.
13:08It made no sense to us.
13:10Well, then we were determined to find out, you know, who killed our brother.
13:15I was a staff writer and reporter at Perry County News from 2015 to 2017.
13:29Small town journalism is mostly very mundane life events.
13:34That's a lot of what I handled.
13:37I did not expect a murder case to come my way as a journalist.
13:42It really kind of shook up the town
13:44because this type of thing just doesn't happen in Tell City.
13:49And I remember thinking, this is going to be a huge deal here.
13:53Dave was one of my friends.
14:00The word of Dave getting shot, it was already all over the place.
14:04It was everywhere.
14:05People talk.
14:06They hear stuff.
14:06They talk, whether they know or not.
14:10Of course, we all had our suspicions, you know,
14:13Tell City's a small town and, you know, it's hard to keep a secret,
14:17especially one of this magnitude.
14:20We had heard about our friend wanting to rob my brother.
14:24The family was, you know, frankly, quite scared
14:27because could they come after anyone else in the family, you know?
14:32I had done heard from people on the street
14:35that an acquaintance of David's had maybe shot him.
14:41David gave everybody the benefit of the doubt, you know?
14:45I mean, he gave everybody a second chance or third chance
14:49or whatever.
14:50I mean, he didn't just throw people away, you know?
14:57But maybe he should have this one.
14:59I'm a retired editor of the Perry County News in Tell City, Indiana.
15:16Being a journalist has been a great experience,
15:18so 20-plus years of covering everyday life in the community.
15:22David's homicide was an attention grabber, obviously a tragedy.
15:27There was a lot of public interest in what had happened to David.
15:31David had operated a trash route.
15:34In the rural areas, folks either have a dumpster
15:37or they subscribe to a trash service.
15:39I think David, for a number of years, operated a trash service
15:42and was known as a dependable provider of that service
15:47and was well-liked for him.
15:50A lot of people knew him
15:51and were surprised what had happened,
15:55that it actually wasn't a suicide,
15:57but was, you know, a murder.
16:00Murders don't happen in our community often,
16:03so there was unease in the community
16:06about a murder in our community often.
16:09So there was unease in the community
16:11about a murder that hadn't yet been solved
16:15or one that had no one been arrested yet.
16:18An important lead came
16:33when a rumor about a photograph
16:37appeared through social media.
16:40It was mentioned.
16:41I don't exactly know who mentioned it,
16:43but there was a picture of Dave Wiedemann
16:45and Bob Hunter on Facebook.
16:48Dave was wearing that same shirt
16:50when they found him dead.
16:52It looks really creepy to me.
16:54When I did see that, I told the investigators,
16:57because if I didn't reach out,
16:58then it'd be like, I would feel like I was hiding something.
17:02The arrangements were made to meet with Bobby
17:05and interview him at the Tell City Police Department.
17:08We're missing some pieces on this puzzle,
17:10and we're going to need people like you
17:11to put these pieces back together for us.
17:13When was the last time you saw Dave?
17:15This Sunday before they found him.
17:18Okay.
17:20Tell us a little bit about that.
17:22We had a good visit.
17:23We just kind of sat around there talking.
17:25On your Facebook site,
17:27you got a picture of you and Dave.
17:30It said it was posted on Tuesday,
17:31but I was just curious when it was taken.
17:34Any idea?
17:35Matter of fact, this was back last February or January.
17:42Last February, January, like 2015.
17:4416 or 17?
17:4616.
17:47Yeah.
17:47Ones on the couch.
17:49So they were over a year old.
17:52Yeah.
17:52Okay.
17:53Me and Dave was all best friends.
17:56There probably ain't nobody with me,
17:58any sister,
17:59no one any better.
18:01They're not my best friends, y'all.
18:03The detectives were able to release him at that time.
18:10All right.
18:11We'll call you if we got any questions, man.
18:18I was in shock.
18:20The police maybe thought I didn't kill David,
18:22and I didn't know how to handle that.
18:26I mean, right off the bat,
18:28I'm sure the investigation knew that.
18:30He was just somebody really special to me.
18:34He was more than a friend.
18:35He was like a brother.
18:38We became really, really close friends
18:39about 25 years.
18:41The last time I saw David alive
18:45was in February,
18:46maybe a week before he was killed.
18:48He asked me when I was leaving.
18:49He said, where's your jacket at?
18:51And I said, I left it at home.
18:53He took the plentile shirt right off his back.
18:57He said, here, put this on.
18:58You might break down.
19:00I need something warm.
19:00So, that's my very last memory of him.
19:10If anybody doesn't know anything about David,
19:13that right there tells it all.
19:17He would give you the shirt off his back
19:19if you needed it and you asked for it,
19:22or even if you didn't ask for it.
19:24Come here.
19:40Sit.
19:43Sit.
19:45So, I'm at the Alpine working,
19:47bartending during the day,
19:48and an investigator had contacted me
19:52to want to know, you know,
19:54what day I had seen David
19:56and who he was with.
19:58And I told him,
20:00I think it was on Tuesday,
20:02he had came in the bar.
20:04I remember that David was drinking
20:06a Calvert and Coke
20:07and he was there with a male and a female.
20:12I showed him exactly
20:12where they were sitting in the bar
20:14and so that's when he got the camera.
20:17You know, the camera footage
20:19and looked at the video.
20:21It was pointing right down on him,
20:23sitting at the bar.
20:41An investigator called me
20:42and wanted to know
20:43what day I had seen David
20:44and, you know,
20:45approximately what time
20:46and who he was in there with.
20:48He came in with Nicky Anderson
20:50and Randy Coulter.
20:54I knew Randy
20:55from the time I started
20:5611 years ago.
20:58He, you know,
20:58he always came in.
20:59I liked Randy.
21:01I mean, he was very kind to me.
21:03I mean, he seemed
21:03to be a really nice guy.
21:05I mean, I think
21:06even that night,
21:07Randy had actually paid
21:09for all the drinks.
21:09I didn't know that Nicky
21:12was Randy's girlfriend
21:13because I actually seen her,
21:15you know,
21:16with different people a lot
21:17so I didn't know.
21:19They seemed in a really good mood.
21:21I didn't notice any trouble
21:23or they didn't seem
21:25to be fighting or anything.
21:26My name is Rod Acchiardo.
21:36I'm a criminal defense attorney
21:37here in Tell City, Indiana.
21:39I've been practicing law
21:41for 32 years now.
21:43I've been on both sides
21:44of the fence.
21:45I know about prosecuting criminals
21:46and I know about defending them.
21:48There is very little
21:50violent crime here.
21:52So in a bigger place,
21:53a lot of crimes go on,
21:55a lot of murders
21:55may go unsolved
21:56because you don't have
21:57that same type of small town,
22:00you know,
22:00interconnection of people,
22:02everyone knowing everyone else
22:03and helping you
22:04to solve criminal cases.
22:07In this case,
22:08after the Alpine,
22:10the three of them leave
22:11to go to Mr. Weidman's house
22:14and they continue their partying.
22:17This got back to the police
22:19and then they decided,
22:20well, wait a second,
22:21we need to look at this
22:22a little harder.
22:25What can you tell me
22:31about your relationship
22:33with David?
22:34I've known him all my life.
22:35Really?
22:36Yes, sir.
22:37Okay.
22:38What do you think happened?
22:39Weidman's been talking about
22:41doing something to himself
22:42for months now.
22:44Well, we know
22:44that he didn't do this
22:45to himself.
22:46And you guys are
22:47the last people
22:48that I could find
22:49that had any interaction
22:51with him.
22:52You guys were at the bars
22:53together.
22:53I got all kinds of people
22:54that you guys were.
22:54Was he at his house?
22:56The last I seen him
22:57was at his home.
22:58And whenever we left,
23:01David was still loving well.
23:02Okay.
23:03What was going on there?
23:07Well, we was all
23:08sitting there drinking
23:08and having a good time.
23:10And then my old man
23:11had a fallout
23:12argument and I left.
23:14He left.
23:14He went one way,
23:15I went the other way.
23:16Then when we got into it,
23:20she went this way
23:21and I went this way.
23:22And where is that way?
23:24Down his driveway.
23:25Okay.
23:25And where is that way?
23:26Down through the woods.
23:28Okay.
23:28And where is Dave?
23:30Dave's sitting up here.
23:31Come on, guys.
23:32I went this way,
23:33he went that way.
23:35Police are suspicious
23:35because they use
23:36similar type of wording
23:38to describe
23:40what had happened.
23:42They've talked about this
23:43and they got a story down
23:45and that's what they're
23:45going to continue to say
23:46over and over and over.
23:48What were you guys
23:49arguing about
23:50or fighting about?
23:51Something stupid.
23:52Do you remember what it was?
23:53I don't really remember
23:54what I was arguing about
23:56but I know he was arguing
23:57and we both left
23:59and Whitman's son-in-law
24:00picked me up
24:01and gave me a ride
24:01to tell City.
24:04So when you and Randall
24:06got into it,
24:08you didn't hit him?
24:08He never hit you?
24:09No.
24:10Okay.
24:12Courtney is saying
24:13that you had told her
24:15that Randy did this.
24:18I've never ever seen Courtney.
24:19And then according to Courtney,
24:21you left with a bloody lip
24:23and I understand
24:23things get out of hand
24:24like that too
24:25but I mean,
24:26did David,
24:27did David try to interview,
24:28did he try to break you guys up
24:29to keep you guys open?
24:32So you're the last person
24:34to see Dave.
24:36And then there's a black area,
24:38there's, hold on,
24:39hold on, hold on.
24:39There's a huge black area
24:41with her.
24:45You're the last person
24:46to see her
24:47and the next person
24:48that sees him,
24:49he's dead.
24:51Randy.
24:52That's not me, bro.
24:53Me and her left
24:54at the same time.
24:55So when I hook you
24:56up to a polygraph,
24:58you're going to say
24:59you had nothing
25:00to do with it?
25:00Yes, sir.
25:01Sure will.
25:04That's my friend, man.
25:06Never.
25:06The interrogation
25:10of Nicky
25:10and Randy Coulter
25:13seemed to point
25:14to another man
25:16was actually
25:16at David's house
25:17on the day
25:19that he was killed.
25:21And one of Dave's buddies
25:22come by too
25:22named Jimmy.
25:24You know his last name
25:24by chance?
25:25No, I don't.
25:26Is there anybody else
25:27out there?
25:28There was a Jimmy guy
25:30that came out there
25:30earlier that morning.
25:32Who?
25:32Jimmy who?
25:33I don't know
25:33his last name.
25:34And that's Jimmy Ransom.
25:37Randy became nervous
25:39about his answer
25:40and stopped
25:41talking to police.
25:44Randy at first
25:45said he would
25:45take the polygraph
25:47and then backed out
25:48as it became
25:49closer to the time
25:50to take the exam.
25:52And he's thinking,
25:53well, wait a second.
25:54You know,
25:54I probably should have
25:55some representation
25:56or something.
25:57I'm not comfortable
25:58just talking to you people
25:59and giving a polygraph
26:01and all of this
26:01for a guy,
26:01you're saying a guy
26:02was murdered.
26:03And so he gave
26:04an abbreviated statement
26:05and then he said,
26:05I'm done.
26:05I'm not saying anything else.
26:07But something's going on here.
26:08You've got some information
26:09that you're not giving us.
26:10I don't have no more information.
26:12What's going on here?
26:13I don't have no more information.
26:15I'm done until I go to the attorney.
26:18I don't have any more information.
26:20I can't tell y'all
26:22no more than what I know.
26:23Both Nikki and Randy
26:38had mentioned a witness
26:40who was apparently present
26:42just prior to when
26:44the shooting occurred,
26:46Jimmy Ransom.
26:47He said he figured the investigation
27:08would just catch up to him.
27:10That seems suspicious
27:12on the surface for sure.
27:14Jimmy admitted to being there
27:16on the day of the murder.
27:19These two men
27:20who were supposed to be friends,
27:22you would think
27:22he would have come to them
27:24with this information earlier,
27:26whether it's useful or not.
27:28I mean, you know
27:29what I'm investigating
27:29and all that stuff.
27:30What do you know about it?
27:31And that day
27:32I went over there
27:33March 1st.
27:35I got there probably
27:36at 10.30 that morning
27:37to get him to go to court
27:39to take my mowers up there
27:41to get them worked on.
27:42Mm-hmm.
27:43So what all were you guys
27:44doing while you were there?
27:45Just hanging out,
27:46just asking him
27:47if he was going to go.
27:49You know?
27:50Did you notice any
27:52guns out or anything like that
27:54while you were there?
27:56Do you know if Dave
27:58normally kept any guns out?
28:00No, he usually kept them
28:01in a bedroom.
28:01Every gun he had,
28:03he kept them in a bedroom.
28:03Okay.
28:05Have you ever handled
28:06any of his guns?
28:07No.
28:08But there on the first
28:09you didn't touch
28:10any of his guns?
28:11No.
28:11You didn't have any
28:11of his guns out
28:12or anything like that?
28:12Absolutely not.
28:14Would you be willing
28:15to give a DNA sample today?
28:17It's just a cheek swab.
28:19No, I didn't touch a gun.
28:20Yeah, I don't...
28:22I'm just trying to...
28:23That way I don't have
28:23to come back
28:24and track you down
28:24or do anything later
28:25and try to get that later.
28:28Would you be willing
28:29to do that?
28:30Sure.
28:30All I know Dave Weidman
28:32was live, well,
28:33and breathing
28:34whenever I was there.
28:45There was a series of things
28:46that normally,
28:47in a murder case,
28:48you know,
28:49line up for you.
28:50In this case,
28:50the physical evidence
28:51was not lining up.
28:53The DNA,
28:55there was no DNA
28:55on the gun
28:56from the state lab.
28:58So that's a problem,
29:00you know?
29:00And so what the prosecutor
29:02usually relies on,
29:03all the physical evidence,
29:04the CSI and all that,
29:06wasn't...
29:06really wasn't there
29:07in this case.
29:08And so you have a lot of what,
29:09you know,
29:10he said, she said
29:11type of evidence.
29:12And so the question is,
29:13who's telling the truth
29:14and who's not?
29:16Who can you believe?
29:17The police come
29:44and talk to me
29:44and there wasn't really
29:47nothing for me to hide.
29:49Dave was a good man.
29:50I mowed his grass
29:51and he let me hunt
29:52on his property
29:53and go fishing.
29:55I had no reason
29:56to harm Dave whatsoever.
29:59No reason for him
30:00not to be around today.
30:01My brother loved hunting
30:14arrowheads
30:15and so did I.
30:20They're everywhere
30:21around here.
30:22Really,
30:22Riverbank.
30:24Yeah,
30:24that's an axe.
30:27David
30:28started saving them first
30:30and then
30:31I started going.
30:34He'd find one
30:34and he'd throw it
30:35over my pathway
30:36or something
30:36so I'd find it.
30:39But usually I'd pass it up
30:40and he'd have to
30:41bring me back
30:42to help me find it,
30:43you know,
30:43because,
30:44yeah,
30:46he loved that kind of stuff.
30:48We were close,
30:49real close.
30:52When my dad died,
30:54that's when he started
30:55really taking care of me.
30:57He said he was going
30:57to make sure
30:59I made it,
31:00you know?
31:01and I was like
31:0214 or something
31:04and he has,
31:08David has taken care of me.
31:09The memorial service
31:24for Dave
31:25was really beautiful.
31:27There were pictures of him,
31:29you know,
31:30all over the building
31:32of all his younger years
31:35and later years
31:36and his friends
31:37and there were just
31:39hundreds and hundreds
31:40of people
31:41just keep coming in
31:42because we have
31:42a big family.
31:44I remember
31:45one young man
31:47said that he loved David.
31:49David took him in
31:50when he was younger
31:52and in trouble.
31:53He said that Dave
31:54gave him a second chance.
31:57That was just David.
31:59but he was always
32:01trying to help people.
32:03It seemed that he was
32:04kind of everyone's friend
32:05and that's maybe why,
32:08maybe his friendliness
32:09was part of the reason
32:10he got kind of tied up
32:12with some not-so-great people.
32:15Typically, you know,
32:26people discount
32:27he said, she said
32:28type of evidence
32:29which is generally
32:30not very strong
32:31but you get enough people
32:32saying the same thing.
32:33It builds up
32:34and becomes stronger.
32:36This being a small town,
32:37the rumor mill
32:37is always big
32:38and people would come to me
32:40and I had a couple
32:41of people come to me
32:41and they had
32:42some wild stories
32:44about what happened
32:44that night.
32:45A rumor came back
32:47to the investigator
32:48from a person
32:50who has been involved
32:51with law enforcement
32:52before.
32:53He was saying
32:54there was a guy
32:54that was friends
32:55with Ms. Anderson
32:56and was friends
32:57with Mr. Colton
32:58and the friend said
32:59no, I shot him.
33:02What's your, uh,
33:03what's your full name?
33:04Lawrence Archer.
33:06Has there been
33:07any, any situation
33:08where anybody
33:09has come up to you
33:11or you've been around
33:12and you've overheard
33:13people talk
33:13or any indication
33:15anybody saying
33:16I did this
33:18or, or confessing
33:19to you
33:20that they shot Dave?
33:22I ain't gonna lie
33:22to you about it.
33:23Just between me
33:24and you
33:24don't let nobody
33:25else hear this.
33:26I did hear
33:27my friend say
33:27I don't know
33:28what the hell
33:28you all
33:28about I was gonna die.
33:31Larry said
33:32that his friend
33:33Teddy Smith
33:34was the one
33:34who actually
33:35shot Dave.
33:37Arrangements
33:37were made
33:38to meet
33:38with Teddy
33:39to interview him
33:41at the Tell City
33:41Police Department.
33:44Teddy was, uh,
33:46somebody that hung
33:47really close
33:48with Randy.
33:50He had a, uh,
33:51a history
33:52of being in prison
33:52and, uh,
33:53what for exactly?
33:54I'm not sure.
33:55I don't know.
33:56I just, I know
33:57that he would come
33:57to Dave's
33:58and they were
33:58drinking buddies.
34:01David, he looked out
34:02for people
34:04that, that struggled.
34:06Teddy Smith,
34:09he has a history
34:10of stealing,
34:11a history of,
34:11um, just not
34:13being a good person
34:14like you're
34:14supposed to be.
34:15Especially when
34:16you have somebody
34:16like Dave Weidman,
34:18he'll give you
34:18everything you want
34:19and then get
34:20shot for it.
34:29Me and Mr. Weidman
34:30have been friends
34:31for years,
34:32over 30 years.
34:33He stayed out
34:33at that house a lot?
34:35About days?
34:35Mm-hmm.
34:36Not wise.
34:37I held,
34:38I don't know,
34:40whatever,
34:41every two, three days
34:41he was out there
34:42and I'd go out there
34:43to help me.
34:43Guns?
34:44Did he have guns
34:44at the house?
34:45Dave, uh,
34:46he had a few guns
34:47that I know of.
34:49He had a muzzleloader
34:50and he had a 30,
34:51uh, 6 or 30,
34:5230 or something
34:53and, uh,
34:55think a 9mm.
34:56Okay.
34:57I think it was.
34:58Where did he keep those?
34:59I don't know
35:00because Dave,
35:00we used to have
35:01liver them
35:01and he put them up.
35:02But them guns,
35:04them guns,
35:04they all laid
35:05around the house
35:05for, you know,
35:07I guess about a month.
35:09And he had one
35:09on the kitchen table.
35:10He had one in the living room.
35:13Well, I swear to you,
35:13if I didn't anything,
35:14I'd tell you.
35:15I'd tell you
35:15you're going to burn him
35:16and the poor guy
35:17and get him
35:18because I,
35:18now I like my sweet.
35:20He's a good man.
35:21Yep.
35:21So he heard.
35:22He's not being charged
35:23with anything.
35:24If he denies having said it,
35:25you really can't go beyond that.
35:27The investigators were still
35:34looking for a motive,
35:36which you must have
35:38to get the true story.
35:39Why this person
35:40is now a victim
35:41of a murder.
35:42What happened?
35:43I mean,
35:44what exactly happened
35:45at this crime scene?
35:47You know,
35:49while the investigation
35:50was going on
35:51and they hadn't
35:52charged anyone yet,
35:53it was just kind of
35:54unnerving that,
35:55you know,
35:56this killer's out there.
35:57We don't know who it is.
35:58We were,
35:59you know,
36:00frankly terrified.
36:01It was reported
36:13to the police
36:14that a truck
36:15had been stolen
36:16and he believed
36:17by Randy Coulter
36:18and Nikki.
36:22Mr. Coulter
36:23and Miss Anderson
36:24were arrested
36:25and they tried
36:26to question him again.
36:27and they tried
36:31to act like
36:32they wanted to know
36:32about the car
36:33but they really wanted
36:33to know about
36:34how did Mr. Weidman die.
36:36Randy,
36:37they didn't make
36:38any further statements.
36:39But Nikki comes in
36:41and she had
36:42a different story.
36:43We want you to talk
36:44to us about
36:44what happened
36:45at Weidman's house.
36:46So the story
36:47that you told us
36:47originally wasn't
36:48100% true.
36:49Part of it was.
36:50Part of it was.
36:51I need 100% truth.
36:53What was the last thing
36:54you saw before
36:54you took off
36:54down the driveway?
36:57Has Randy
37:01said anything
37:01to you
37:02about what happened
37:03up there?
37:03No.
37:04You guys have been
37:04together for a couple
37:05weeks running now.
37:06They keep telling me
37:07to stick to the story,
37:09stick to the story,
37:10that story,
37:11everyone just wanted
37:11me going this way.
37:12So I didn't go,
37:13I went this way
37:14and he never went
37:15that way.
37:15Sure.
37:16But he hasn't told you
37:17what happened to Matt?
37:18No.
37:19Have you asked him
37:20what happened?
37:21No, I don't even
37:22want to let go.
37:23I don't even...
37:23Randy had told
37:27her to stick
37:28with the story
37:29that they ended up
37:31going their separate
37:32ways.
37:34But when you get
37:36conflicting stories
37:37from the same
37:38individual,
37:39is there a reason
37:40the story changed?
37:41So I want you
37:46to tell me
37:48this story
37:49from the beginning.
37:50Me, Randy, Dave.
37:51Okay.
37:52All right.
37:53When we're out,
37:54I should sit a little
37:54girl.
37:55Chit chat.
37:56Where at?
37:56At Dave's house.
37:59Randy's sitting
37:59on the big couch,
38:00Dave's sitting
38:01on the little couch.
38:02They're just sitting
38:02there talking to him.
38:03Randy drinks two mores,
38:04and the more he drinks,
38:05the more he gets...
38:07He starts running
38:08about the mouth.
38:09Don't lie to me
38:10because I know
38:11you're...
38:11He said,
38:12I know you're...
38:12I know you're lying.
38:13I know you're lying.
38:14He's talking to me.
38:15I'm trying to tell
38:16him no way to...
38:17I sat down
38:18beside Dave
38:18on the little couch.
38:21Randy comes over
38:21and busts in my mouth.
38:24I get up.
38:25I had a mouth full of blood,
38:27and I spit it on the floor.
38:28Okay.
38:30And I took off
38:31out the door.
38:32Randy comes out
38:33and as I was
38:34running out the door,
38:35and Dave took him
38:36running,
38:37running the doorway.
38:39Randy was pushing Dave
38:40in the house.
38:40Like he was
38:41shouldering him
38:42and pushing him
38:42back in the house?
38:44And I went into town.
38:45I told Dave
38:46with my son-in-law.
38:47I'm worried about Dave.
38:48I'm gonna go out there
38:49and check my Dave.
38:50Nikki was able
38:51to give information
38:53that could have
38:54possibly been
38:55the motive
38:56to the case.
38:58In her second interview,
39:00she said that
39:01there was a disagreement,
39:02that there had been
39:04sex between
39:06Nikki
39:07and David.
39:14During the investigation,
39:16another important
39:17piece of evidence
39:19was found
39:19that occurred
39:20the day of the shooting.
39:219-1-1.
39:28There is a suspicious guy
39:31is walking this road.
39:34He come up to the door
39:36and was wanting to know
39:39if this was surging.
39:41About how long ago?
39:42About 20 minutes ago?
39:46The police were looking
39:48for this person
39:49out in a remote area
39:51close to David's house
39:53the day of the shooting.
39:5510-4.
39:56No, I have not located
39:57the subject yet.
39:58The complainant said
39:59that he came out
40:00of those woods.
40:01He turned off
40:02of apricot
40:03onto Apollona.
40:0410-4.
40:06Randy Coulter
40:07was on a county road
40:09and a deputy sheriff
40:11stopped
40:12to ask
40:13what he was doing
40:15in that area
40:15and the fact
40:18that he did not
40:20flee
40:21upon seeing
40:22the police car
40:23indicates a certain
40:24coolness
40:25in his demeanor.
40:28He was kind of
40:28wandering around,
40:29I guess is what he said,
40:30and they offered
40:31to give him a ride.
40:32They gave him a ride
40:32back down to Tell City.
40:33So that becomes
40:35an important piece
40:36of information later.
40:38It was not
40:39of any importance
40:40at the time.
40:41It was just merely
40:42an encounter
40:43with an individual
40:43on a county road,
40:45but later becomes
40:45very important
40:46placing the suspect
40:48near the area
40:50where the crime
40:51was committed.
40:53What has Randy
40:54said to you
40:55that will help me
40:56to help you?
41:01Randy said he shot
41:03and he said
41:03I was next.
41:05And he said
41:05you were next
41:06if you said anything.
41:08He said...
41:09I did it.
41:10I did.
41:11I shot him in the face.
41:12I did it.
41:13He said.
41:14He said that
41:14directly to you?
41:15Yes.
41:20It's been eating
41:22at you, hasn't it?
41:27You've got to feel
41:28better knowing
41:29that this is
41:29off your chest.
41:33there was a lot
41:43of jealousy
41:44going on
41:44from what I heard
41:45and Randy
41:46just lost his cool.
41:48You know,
41:48maybe David
41:49was defending Nicky
41:50or defending himself,
41:52I'm not sure,
41:53and Randy
41:53just snapped.
41:54at the trial,
42:01Nicky gave
42:02a chronological
42:02account
42:03of what happened.
42:05There was an argument
42:06between David
42:07and Randy
42:08as to whether
42:09there had been
42:10a sexual relationship
42:12between David
42:13and Nicky.
42:14Randy struck her
42:15in the face
42:16causing her mouth
42:17to bleed.
42:19David said,
42:20we're not going
42:21to have that in here.
42:22Everybody has to go.
42:23Nicky spat on the floor
42:25and then ran out,
42:27leaving Randy alone
42:28with David.
42:30And then that's when
42:31Randy committed
42:32the shooting.
42:34Randy put the gun
42:35in the victim's left hand,
42:37locked the doors
42:38to make it look like
42:39no one had entered,
42:40and set it up
42:41to appear to be
42:42a suicide.
42:43If I could say
42:50one thing to David
42:51right now,
42:52I would say,
42:53brother,
42:53I love you.
42:55I miss you.
42:59I wish I could hug you
43:00one more time.
43:00I try not to think
43:12about all those years
43:14of police work.
43:15And I think
43:16the suicide rate
43:18among police officers
43:20and retired police officers
43:22is very high.
43:24It's good to cleanse
43:26your spirit
43:27of the bad parts
43:29of law enforcement
43:30that you have
43:31to deal with
43:32because some
43:34of these cases
43:35do stick with you.
43:39Lord, we want to thank you
43:41for bringing us all here.
43:42Second, we thank you
43:42for all you've given us.
43:44Thank you for this food.
43:46David was just
43:47lighthearted
43:48and just always
43:49great to be around.
43:51Always had a smile
43:52on his face.
43:54You know,
43:54it still hurts today.
43:56You know,
43:56we have our good days
43:57and our bad days.
44:00I still miss him
44:01every day.
44:03I want people
44:04to remember
44:05him by his love
44:06for life,
44:07and he was
44:09my best friend.
44:18Thank you.
