00:00American dream
00:01Come on!
00:02Until it became an American nightmare
00:05Saying, hey, my wife never came home, my wife never came home
00:07What's going on?
00:09Multiple suspects with multiple motives
00:12Who's that guy?
00:12Come on up the back stairwell
00:13Do you know what that means?
00:16This is it between us, huh?
00:17Is there anything going on between them that would lead to Mitra's death?
00:21She had been shot multiple times
00:23You think Brett and Mitra have a thing going on?
00:26Gossip can definitely be poison
00:28There's something you're not telling me
00:29I'm the one with the gun
00:31And could a chilling message hold the key to a baffling murder?
00:35Some crazed maniac
00:36Who's just come through and done God knows what
00:39What are you doing here?
00:43The Pacific Northwest
00:45Rugged
00:47Mysterious
00:48And remote
00:50It's called Wonderland
00:53But this paradise can be a hunting ground
00:57A graveyard
00:59And the perfect place
01:02For murder
01:03For most Portlanders
01:13Autumn weekends are a chance to get outside before the winter rain sets in
01:18But Mitra Mehrabadi
01:21And Keely Tubbs
01:22Know exactly where they'll be spending some of this October weekend
01:26At work
01:27Oi!
01:27You plan on working at all this weekend?
01:29Yes, Saturday morning
01:31My daughter has a recital in the afternoon
01:33What about you?
01:34Working weekends
01:34Was a common practice
01:36For our company
01:38Because we had the additional work
01:41That needed to be done
01:42It's the next morning
01:47And around 6.30am
01:49Mitra heads off to work
01:50She'll see her husband Mari
01:52Later that Saturday afternoon
01:54At their daughter's recital
01:55I wouldn't miss your recital for anything in the world
01:57Promise?
01:58I promise
01:59I'll be back around 3
02:02I'll call you around lunch
02:04Okay, bye
02:05Mitra settles in at her desk
02:12Tackling a pile of insurance claims
02:35But it's now 4pm
02:37Mari's calls to Mitra have gone unanswered
02:39And she never showed up for her daughter's recital
02:43Mari races down to her office
02:46Hello, is anyone in there?
02:48No
02:49He's letting me in
02:51Come on
02:51Hello
02:52I had to go do the normal perimeter check
02:54Started walking back towards the front door
02:56And this man was standing there
02:58Is there something I can help you with?
03:00Yes, my wife
03:00She is missing
03:01I cannot get a hold of her
03:02It's been five hours
03:04She missed our daughter's recital
03:05It's not like her
03:06It was a frantic look
03:07Like scared
03:08Because it was almost one of those things
03:09Like first time ever being late
03:11Where is she?
03:12Your wife
03:13She works here?
03:14Yes, for the last three years
03:15Mitra Mehrabadi
03:16What's that?
03:17Mitra Mehrabadi
03:19Saying, hey, my wife never came home
03:20My wife never came home
03:21I'm like, okay, well
03:22Who's your wife?
03:23He kept saying her name over and over again
03:25M-E-H-R-A-B-A-D-I
03:28I don't recognize that name
03:29Here's a photo of her
03:31And so he shows me a picture
03:33And I was like, well
03:33I really don't know who this is
03:35I was like, I can go look
03:37I'll come with you
03:38No, no
03:38Stay here, company policy
03:40I can't let you in
03:41What's your name, by the way?
03:42It's Mari
03:43She works in the underwriting department
03:45I'll check it out, okay?
03:47I was like, I'll be upstairs
03:48And I'll come right back down
03:49To be honest, in my mind too
03:52It was like
03:52Picture of her looking young
03:53Maybe she says she's going to work
03:55And she went somewhere else
03:56It does happen
03:57And then I'm walking around
04:00I'm looking through every cubicle
04:02And pretty much I had to work my whole
04:03All the way around
04:04Before I came up to her
04:06I saw it laying there
04:10And the first thing I actually noticed
04:13Was the bullet hole
04:14That's when I seen the picture of her
04:18And I think it was her daughter
04:19And that's when I realized who it was
04:21I just looked down
04:22I was like, you know
04:23I was like, that's done
04:23Kind of like
04:24Okay, that's not what I was expecting
04:25I was just thinking of the steps
04:27What do I got to do now?
04:289-1-1
04:29Within minutes
04:31Cops are on the scene
04:33What?
04:35What's going on?
04:37Did you find her?
04:38Did you find Mitra?
04:39What's up?
04:39Wait right here
04:40I don't have any information
04:41What's wrong?
04:41He started screaming at me
04:42What's wrong?
04:43What's wrong?
04:44What'd you find?
04:45And I was like
04:45I was looking at him like
04:47It's not my place to say it
04:48No, please
04:49Do we have any eyewitnesses?
04:56Not that I know of yet
04:57Our best bet is to check
04:58With security guard who found her
04:59When Portland homicide detectives
05:02Michelle Michaels
05:03And Brian Steed show up
05:04They have little to go on
05:06Very minimal
05:07Just that a person
05:08Was shot in the workplace
05:09So we go there
05:11The security guard
05:14Had gone upstairs
05:14And found our victim
05:16Lying in her cubicle
05:17And that's what we sort of
05:18Knew right now
05:19Our victim
05:21Her name is Mitra Makrabadi
05:23You think she shot herself?
05:25I don't know
05:26I was only with her
05:26For a short time
05:27So when he called 911
05:29He said
05:29Well looks like she shot herself
05:31I don't know why
05:32But that's just how it came out
05:34There's been a shooting
05:35A woman shot herself at her desk
05:37She's dead
05:41And when the police showed up
05:43At the scene
05:44The officers initially
05:45The security guard said something about
05:47It looks like she shot herself
05:49That's her husband
05:52Did you get his name?
05:55Maury
05:55He showed up looking for her
05:56He's all panicked
05:57Well maybe the husband's involved somehow
06:00That thought's going through her mind
06:02As we're processing the scene
06:03And looking at things
06:04If we have a suicide
06:05And significant other is there
06:06We will go out
06:07And investigate it
06:09And just check
06:09And make sure that
06:10It's really a suicide
06:12Is there anything going on
06:15Between them
06:16That would lead to
06:17Mitra's death?
06:20Is he upset with Mitra?
06:21Do we want to get a look at the scene
06:23And see what things were like?
06:24Detective
06:25Detectives
06:25Please can you
06:26Please tell me what is going on
06:28The detectives know
06:29Their first stop
06:30Is the crime scene
06:31But sometimes
06:32They have to make an exception
06:34When I first saw Maury
06:35When I like looked inside the building
06:37He looked lost
06:38He was upset
06:41He was troubled
06:42And again maybe
06:45Maybe he's the guy who did this
06:47And he's just sort of
06:48In that realm of
06:49What am I going to do?
06:50What am I going to do?
06:51Where is Mitra?
06:52What is wrong?
06:53Unfortunately I don't have any information
06:55For you right now
06:55But I'm headed upstairs
06:57And then I will come down
06:58And give you all the information
06:59That I can
07:00Okay?
07:01Okay
07:02Brian and I talked
07:06And we decided that
07:06We'll go up and just take
07:07A quick look at the scene
07:08We did not want it to go fully in
07:13To look at her just yet
07:14We wanted to make sure
07:16That our crime scene team
07:17Had a chance to come in
07:18Do the photographs they needed
07:20There's cubbies everywhere
07:22There's like a sea of cubbies
07:24But it was pretty clear
07:25As soon as we got in
07:26And got a look at things
07:27And this was not going to be a suicide
07:29She's laying face down
07:34I could clearly see
07:36What looked like gunshot wounds
07:38We came in with someone saying
07:43She shot herself
07:44I'm past that now
07:45You don't have multiple casings
07:46When you've shot yourself
07:47That they were 9mm
07:50How many points of entry do you see?
07:53One
07:54Two
07:56Three
07:58Mitra was shot
07:59Four times
08:00And
08:02One of those was to the head
08:03One to the back
08:06In the center
08:07Somebody sure wanted this poor woman dead
08:11To have this happen to her
08:14It was just tragic on several different levels
08:17Is this somebody who
08:22For some reason
08:24Has gotten into some altercations with Mitra?
08:27Somebody gets in and out without being seen
08:29My killer here
08:31So Brian and I keep bouncing ideas off each other
08:35About what's going on
08:36The idea that maybe this was a disgruntled customer
08:42Of the insurance company
08:43That their claim wasn't handled right or something
08:46That thought crossed their mind
08:47And they didn't get the amount of money they wanted
08:49Or they got their policy
08:51They've been paying on it
08:52And they thought it did one thing
08:53But it doesn't do that
08:54And so now they're upset
08:55And they blame everybody in the world
08:57For what's going on
08:58It's just hard to know
08:59A disgruntled claimant?
09:01Totally legit
09:02While it's a valid theory
09:06And one to look into
09:07Detectives can't rule out anything at this point
09:10I've had some trouble around here
09:11Including the possibility
09:13This could be a random crime of opportunity
09:15The insurance office borders a rough part of town
09:19Known as Sullivan's Gulch
09:20It's a very lively neighborhood
09:22There's a lot going on
09:23In and around where this building is located
09:26You never know who's going to try
09:28And creep up in here
09:28But there is a large number
09:30Of transit homeless people
09:32That camp in that area
09:33And wander the streets
09:35All times of night and day
09:36Being paired with alcohol
09:38Or some sort of mental illness
09:40You never remember to come up
09:42And start something
09:43All the time
09:44I've had people come at me
09:45With syringe needles
09:46Guys breaking into cars
09:50I try to stop them
09:51They come at me with knives
09:52They can get all kinds of weapons
09:54You don't normally see guns with them
09:56But they do occasionally get them
09:59We are still exploring that possibility
10:01The first thing that we're dealing with
10:03Is figuring out
10:04How does this building work
10:05How do we come and go?
10:07How many entrances do you have?
10:08Counting garage access four
10:10Is this a tight building?
10:12Airtight
10:13Not today it wasn't
10:14Do you ever have anybody slip in
10:16Under your radar?
10:17And employees have access keys?
10:19Yep
10:19Like this
10:20There is a chance
10:21That someone could just come in
10:22From off the street
10:23And not have to
10:25Use a key card
10:26It's a slim chance
10:27But there's a chance
10:28I've seen places where
10:30People could get into a building
10:31Following somebody else in
10:33Real closely
10:34People don't realize
10:36They're being followed in
10:36You have eyes everywhere
10:38Yes ma'am
10:40We learned that they have
10:43Surveillance video
10:44We learned they have
10:44Key card operations
10:45We learned that those key cards
10:46Are all identifiers
10:48To an individual person
10:49Portland police found the body
10:51Of a Lake Oswego mother
10:52Inside here
10:54In northeast Portland's
10:55Lloyd district
10:56We're going to need
10:59All your logs
11:00That match up
11:01With the time-coded video
11:02We're going to want
11:03Every frame
11:03Every second
11:04Of anything recorded
11:05Okay
11:06It records all
11:07Onto a motherboard
11:08For months at a time
11:09That'll take me
11:10About 15 minutes
11:11To get that queued up
11:11For you okay
11:12Thanks
11:12Detectives then focus
11:15On Mitra's husband
11:16Please
11:17Tell me what's
11:19Happening now
11:19She's dead isn't she
11:22I'm so sorry
11:24This was raw
11:25Pure emotion
11:26And he realized
11:28He had just lost
11:28His wife
11:29In the time
11:30I've been a homicide detective
11:32There have been times
11:32When I have said
11:33Your loved one
11:35You know is dead
11:36It was just hard
11:38It was hard for him
11:39It was hard for us
11:40Mitra was shot
11:42There's nothing else
11:44I can tell you right now
11:45But if you come with us
11:46Excuse me detectives
11:46They need you
11:47In the back office
11:48They can't wait
11:50You ever see anything
11:56Like this
11:57Yeah
11:57It's not like you have
12:02To put a neon sign up
12:04For us
12:04But it kind of was one
12:05It's sort of like
12:06Oh my god
12:06And there was
12:07Already dead
12:08Already dead
12:09Already dead
12:09Like three to five times
12:10Written on it
12:11Written in big bold red letters
12:13And then
12:14A skull and crossbone
12:16On either side of it
12:17Where do we start
12:20I don't know
12:21Could be like
12:22Some crazed maniac
12:23Who's just come through
12:25And done god knows what
12:27In this facility
12:28The investigation
12:43Into Mitra Mehrabadi's homicide
12:45Is barely an hour old
12:46And a bizarre message
12:48Written on an office whiteboard
12:50Has gotten detectives attention
12:51Already dead
12:53Written four times
12:55For shots
12:57You think there's a connection
13:01Some kind of sick coincidence
13:03You know anything about this
13:05No I have no idea
13:06Let me see what I can find out
13:08Thank you
13:09Is this the killer
13:11If so
13:12Why would they stop
13:13To write this on this whiteboard
13:15If they're running away
13:16From a crime they just committed
13:17It didn't make a whole lot of sense
13:25Detectives Michaels and Steed
13:26Sit down with Mitra's husband Mari
13:28In a conference room
13:29Away from the crime scene
13:30Still unsure of his involvement
13:33He was visibly and audibly upset
13:36It was incredibly real
13:39There was no holding back
13:41There's nothing like having to tell him
13:44Face to face
13:45We wanted to make sure that
13:47We had treated him fairly
13:48When we were talking to him
13:49Mari
13:51Mitra was shot at her cubicle
13:54Several times
13:55No
13:56Not Mitra
13:58We have a daughter
13:59But we will tell him
14:00What has happened
14:01To his wife
14:02And
14:03That's a brutal moment
14:05It can also be
14:08A really enlightening moment
14:09So if he is the person
14:11Who did this
14:12The response might be
14:13A little different
14:14Than if he is not
14:15The person who did this
14:16Is there someone
14:17Who could watch your daughter
14:18For a while
14:19Yes
14:20She's with family friends
14:21His response was
14:25Amazingly appropriate
14:27He had tears in his eyes
14:29He became one of our best assets
14:32As far as this investigation goes
14:34Gave him a little time
14:36Asked him if he would continue
14:37To talk with us
14:38And he said he would
14:39He really wanted to help
14:40Figure this out
14:40We need to ask you
14:42Some questions
14:42To lead to a possible suspect
14:44Is that okay?
14:47We asked him about
14:48Mitra's life
14:49And he told us
14:53A lot of stuff
14:54That was really good information
14:55So Mitra Mabadi
14:56And her family
14:57Come from Iran
14:58To Portland
15:00To build a life
15:02Why do you like it?
15:04I want this to be my room
15:05It's so pretty
15:06This is the living room
15:07This is going to be your room?
15:09Yes
15:10They came
15:11In search of better life
15:13To create a better life
15:15For their daughter
15:15And accomplish the things
15:18That they couldn't accomplish
15:19Back home
15:20If it's safe enough
15:21And the schools are good
15:22It's okay
15:22Yeah?
15:24Yeah
15:24All my friends go to the school
15:26Really?
15:27Yeah
15:27All we know
15:29United States
15:30Is a land of opportunities
15:32Say what?
15:33What did you say?
15:34I like it
15:35Have you or Mitra
15:37Ever received any threats?
15:39What do you mean threats?
15:41Any sort of indication
15:42That Mitra might have been targeted
15:43Not everybody feels the same way
15:46About people from other places
15:47And so it was on the forefront
15:48Of our mind
15:49That perhaps this could be a reason
15:51No
15:52Everyone has been very welcoming here
15:54Everyone you know about
15:55No
15:56If Mitra received any threats
15:58She would have told me
15:59Can you tell us how Mitra came to work here?
16:03I remember
16:04She was very excited about
16:06Having the chance to
16:07Get her foot in the door
16:09Armita feed these ones
16:10Look here
16:10They're so cute
16:11I have like
16:13Maybe steady salary
16:14Health benefits
16:15She was very energetic
16:18Very optimistic
16:21And full of ambitions
16:25And with this kind of a person
16:31Of course many corporations
16:34Love this kind of energy
16:36And I believe
16:38This helped her to
16:42Way their path
16:44Her careers
16:45Much quicker
16:46She wants to provide
16:48More income for her family
16:51And she was a very happy person
16:52She looks very happy
16:53I never saw her unhappy
16:55So proud of you
16:56In Tehran
17:00Mitra earned her master's
17:02In library science
17:03A job in an insurance company
17:04Would allow her to put
17:05Those organizational skills
17:07To good use
17:08For Mitra
17:10It was a big challenge
17:11As a new immigrant
17:13To find that kind of a job
17:17That quick
17:17Was not easy
17:19She has a lot of talent
17:21And that was
17:23How long ago?
17:23Three years or so
17:24And she fit in well?
17:27It wasn't so easy at first
17:29You look a bit lost
17:35Yes, my first day
17:38Mine was 20 years ago
17:40Jim Morgan
17:42They go fast
17:46Save her the day
17:47Jim was one of the first people
17:50That befriended Mitra
17:51When she first came
17:52To the country
17:53And when she first
17:54Got that job
17:55Jim was already
17:56In insurance when we met
17:58He started in the mailroom
18:00Let me give you
18:01The 25 cent tour
18:02He said
18:03It was his work peeps
18:04That kept him there
18:05People he really cared about
18:08Jim and Mitra
18:09Would go walk to a food truck
18:11Maybe
18:11Laugh and have fun
18:16We need to know
18:20About everyone
18:21She worked with here
18:22People she was close to
18:23Was she happy here?
18:26Was there any conflict
18:27Around the office?
18:28Maybe it's going to be
18:30Somebody that
18:30Knew her at work
18:32Worked with her at work
18:34Or somehow
18:34Was connected
18:36To the work environment
18:37There
18:37Well, Maury told us
18:39That she loved her job
18:41There was a tight-knit group
18:43Of folks that were there
18:44Maury also became close
18:46With Mitra's co-worker
18:47Jim Morgan
18:48And his wife, Diane
18:50They call it shucking
18:52Jim and Mitra
18:53They had a little
18:54Bantering back and forth
18:57Playful, you know
18:58Like teasing each other
19:00Kind of thing
19:00It was always there
19:02For friends and neighbors
19:04They needed to borrow
19:06Something
19:07He was the first one
19:08To bring it on over
19:09Very generous
19:10Jim had loaned
19:13Mitra and Maury money
19:13So they could buy a car
19:14And they appreciated him
19:16For that
19:16Our pleasure
19:18Good job
19:19Good job
19:20The couple
19:23Is also grateful
19:24For Jim's guidance
19:25Helping Mitra navigate
19:27The often tricky
19:28Office politics
19:29For the most part
19:30The morale is positive
19:32It does have its
19:34Ups and downs
19:35Mitra's department
19:37Specifically
19:38And that department
19:40Includes two ambitious
19:41Young underwriters
19:42Josh Allenwood
19:44And Brett Hendler
19:45So Mitra
19:47And Josh
19:48And Brett
19:49Were all hired
19:49At the same time
19:50They all went through
19:51Training at the same time
19:52Look at these
19:53Columns
19:53What I did was
19:54I put green for property
19:57Red is casualty
19:58Mortgage is the purple one
20:00And life is blue
20:01That's a horrible thought
20:03What?
20:06Life
20:06Should never be blue
20:08It's too short
20:08You know
20:09While Mitra and Brett
20:10Become friends
20:11That's not the case
20:13For Mitra and Josh
20:14As they both
20:15Buy for the same job
20:16You're pricing our policies
20:20Way too low
20:21For new clients
20:22They are in the
20:23High risk pool
20:24Do you know
20:24What that means?
20:26I did take
20:27Insurance 101
20:28When there is opportunity
20:34For promotion
20:35There's a lot of competition
20:37And various ways
20:39To get ahead
20:40Hey
20:41You think Brett and Mitra
20:43Have a thing going on?
20:46No
20:46And even if they did
20:47What business is it of yours?
20:49None
20:49Just speaks to
20:51Who someone really is
20:52I suppose
20:53And this wouldn't have
20:54Anything to do
20:54With the fact
20:55That both you and Mitra
20:56Are for the same promotion?
21:01Gossip can definitely
21:02Be poisoned
21:03At the beginning of the day
21:04Or at the end of the day
21:06Yeah
21:07Despite Josh's best efforts
21:13Mitra gets the promotion
21:14And that means one thing
21:16Good night
21:17Good night
21:18More work
21:19There are certain positions
21:21That open up
21:22Promotions that happen
21:23That's something
21:24That they're all up for
21:25So we also have to look at
21:27Is it possible
21:27That somebody is upset
21:28That she just got that promotion
21:30And maybe they didn't
21:34Mitra Mehrabadi
21:48Was gunned down
21:49At her cubicle
21:50And detectives believe
21:52Her killer
21:52Could be one of her coworkers
21:54So who else did Mitra
21:56Spend a lot of time with here?
21:58There was also Brett
22:00She talked about him
22:04Gotta seize the moment
22:06Just like this one
22:07You haven't got a
22:11Sister or anything
22:12That's as cute as you
22:13You could set me up with
22:14No
22:14It's just me
22:16You want to grab a quick bite?
22:23Sure
22:24Brett Handler and Mitra
22:25Began working at the insurance company
22:27Around the same time
22:29But was that all
22:30They had in common?
22:32Brett did joke with Mitra
22:33About hey can you set me up
22:34With one of your sisters?
22:35And that they would kind of
22:36Banter back and forth
22:37With that kind of thing
22:38So
22:41Tell me about Iran
22:43It sounds so intriguing
22:45Oh Iran is
22:48It's very different
22:50Than the US
22:50And I
22:52I miss it
22:54I would like to take
22:55Brett
22:56Really admired Mitra
22:58For being able to come
22:59From a totally different country
23:00Come here
23:00Set up her life
23:02And kind of get things going
23:03How much time did Mitra and Brett
23:06Spend together
23:07Outside of business hours?
23:09Sometimes every day
23:10They took
23:11The same drive-in
23:13To work together
23:13Maury told us
23:15Mitra and Brett
23:16Got to become friends at work
23:18She had asked him
23:20If he would be willing
23:21To carpool
23:21And Brett said he would
23:23Interesting thing about Brett
23:25Was he actually lived
23:26Near Mitra
23:27They just drove back and forth
23:29To work
23:29And that he got to know Mitra
23:31Pretty well during that time
23:32You're very funny
23:33Yes
23:34And he listened to that
23:35Please don't take this
23:35The wrong way
23:36But we have to ask
23:37Is there any chance
23:39That Mitra had feelings
23:40For Brett?
23:41No
23:41I don't believe so
23:45We always kind of take that
23:53With a grain of salt
23:53Because a lot of times
23:54The husband and her wife
23:56Doesn't necessarily know
23:57What the other one's doing
23:58We were still exploring
24:00That possibility
24:00That maybe this was
24:01Some sort of
24:02Workplace romance
24:03Everything good?
24:11Yeah
24:12Yeah, good
24:13Maybe there was an affair
24:15Maybe something was happening
24:16Is there something
24:17You're not telling me?
24:18Like what?
24:20Like I love you
24:20Come to bed
24:22While Brett's attention
24:24Might be appreciated
24:25Josh Underwood
24:27Is focused on Mitra
24:28For a different reason
24:29As she continues
24:30Rising up through the ranks
24:32Congratulations
24:33And by the way
24:35There's a big difference
24:37Between reporting to someone
24:38And looking up to them
24:39Don't let him get to you
24:45You got nothing to worry about
24:46You deserve this job
24:47We have Brett
24:53And Josh
24:55Very
24:58Lightweight
25:00What's going on there?
25:01What are the dynamics?
25:03Not trying to be inappropriate
25:04But we should celebrate
25:06Celebrate your promotion
25:08Is there something more
25:10Underneath the surface
25:11That we need to know about?
25:12Let me take you out to dinner
25:13But Mitra celebrates that promotion
25:17With those closest to her
25:19Her husband and the Morgans
25:20I cooked Persian
25:22Oh my gosh
25:24That's beautiful
25:25Thank you
25:27You don't need to shock it
25:28It's the best
25:30Cheers
25:31Cheers
25:31And congratulations
25:34Thank you
25:34Oh my gosh
25:35She just had a look on her face
25:38That she was happy to move up
25:40And have the opportunity
25:42To live the American dream
25:43But who in Mitra's life
25:49Wanted to turn that dream
25:50Into a nightmare?
25:52Hey
25:56Hey Brent
25:58Haven't carpooled in a week
26:01Yeah, no
26:02My husband's schedule has changed
26:05So
26:05I have to pick up my daughter now
26:07This is it between us, huh?
26:10The driving, I mean
26:11Is there anything going on
26:13Between them
26:14That would lead to Mitra's death?
26:16Oh, eh
26:17No
26:18No
26:19No
26:19I have to just drive myself
26:22All right
26:23Yeah
26:24Knowing that Brent
26:25Got knowledge of how to get in
26:26And out of the building
26:27Is there anything
26:28Between the two of them
26:29That may have triggered
26:32This homicidal violence
26:35Please
26:37Find out who did this to my Mitra
26:39We'll do our best
26:41But one of the things
26:43That we have to consider
26:44As we look at
26:46Someone who has now been
26:47Shot several times
26:48And shot in the back
26:48And that
26:49It's
26:50Personal to do that
26:52So personal
26:53That Mitra's killer
26:54Would actually brag
26:55About the murder?
26:57Detectives
26:57I found out who wrote
26:59Already dead on the whiteboard
27:01Who was it?
27:06Debbie Brent
27:07A co-worker
27:08Apparently it's just a joke
27:10In reference to a missing stapler
27:12Some joke
27:14Check off the box
27:15About the already dead
27:16Once I find out
27:17That that was just a prank
27:18Between office mates
27:20The whiteboard was a long shot
27:21At best
27:22So detectives turned
27:24To the surveillance video
27:25What else you got on there?
27:30It has a pretty good bit of video
27:31It doesn't have video
27:32On the actual floors
27:33Where people work
27:33It just has video
27:34In the corridors
27:35And the comings and goings
27:36And the doors
27:36Let's start with Mitra
27:38Uh, here
27:40Arrived super early
27:42You definitely see Mitra coming in
27:44She comes in
27:46It's really early in the morning
27:47I think it was like
27:476.45 in the morning
27:49What else do you have on there?
27:52Who's that?
27:53That's Keeley Tubbs
27:55She works down the hallway
27:56In claims
27:57Same floor as Mitra
27:58Keeley was only in the office building
28:01Briefly that morning
28:02And left
28:05Before police ever arrived
28:06On the scene
28:07It's now been several hours
28:09Since Mitra's body
28:10Was discovered
28:11And it continues
28:13To be on the news
28:14Police found the body
28:15Of a Lake Oswego mother
28:16Inside the Liberty Center
28:18Here in northeast Portland
28:19I never would have expected
28:23To have that happen
28:25At work
28:26At all
28:27Um
28:29It's just not someplace
28:31You expect something
28:32Like that to happen
28:32You expect it to happen
28:34On
28:34Maybe on the streets
28:35They were looking for
28:36Any information
28:37Whatsoever
28:38That anybody might know
28:40About the situation
28:41And
28:42Once I had heard
28:44She had been shot
28:45Hello
28:46My name is Keeley Tubbs
28:48I work in the
28:49I proceeded to
28:51Call the Portland police
28:52Tell them what I knew
28:54That Saturday morning
28:55I was in the office
28:57I have some information
28:58For you
28:58I started questioning
29:00Whether or not
29:00This was something
29:01Other co-worker
29:02Would have done
29:03What about that guy
29:06No
29:08No
29:08That's one of the janitors
29:09The investigation is expanding
29:11We're learning more information
29:13Detectives
29:15There's a Keeley Tubbs
29:16In the atrium
29:17Waiting to see you
29:18That's the one
29:18On the surveillance tape
29:19Keeley
29:23She had found out
29:24That Mitra had died
29:25And
29:26She told me
29:27About the morning
29:28Did you think anyone else
29:29Was on the floor
29:30No
29:30I had no idea
29:31She heard
29:32The scream
29:34Like a child screaming
29:35And it kind of came
29:36From the other side
29:37Of the floor
29:37And at the time
29:38I just thought to myself
29:40Well what is that
29:41Wait a minute
29:42Who's that guy
29:44Coming up the back stairwell
29:46Well that's the emergency stairwell
29:48Let me see if I can get a closer look
29:51Now he decided to use the emergency stairwell
29:54Instead of actually using the elevators
29:56Like everybody else does
29:57Which was kind of odd
29:59As they try to make sense
30:01Of what they see
30:02On the video
30:03A 911 operator
30:05Hears this disturbing request
30:08What's going on then
30:09Look for a black four door sedan
30:12No
30:13No
30:13That's not how this works
30:14You have to tell me
30:15What the emergency is
30:16A man with a gun then
30:20There's somebody there with a gun
30:22Are you seeing this person now
30:23I'm the one with a gun
30:25I'm happy to send you help
30:27I just need you to tell me
30:28A little bit about
30:28What's going on today
30:29Just do it dummy
30:31That's Jim Morgan
30:35Sneaking up the back stairwell
30:37I saw Jim
30:39Rushing from Mitra's area
30:41Earlier this morning
30:42He was in a panic
30:44Now hi Jim
30:45As I was walking
30:46To the other side of the building
30:47I passed Jim Morgan
30:49Walking towards me
30:51Rather hurriedly
30:53Did you just hear that noise?
30:54Yeah that was weird
30:55Sorry running late
30:56He didn't say anything else
31:01To me after that
31:02I proceeded to walk
31:04Towards the noise
31:06That I had heard
31:07But I didn't hear it anymore
31:08See you Monday
31:10And I just turned around
31:11And walked back
31:12Towards my desk
31:13And that's it?
31:14Yeah
31:14Nothing seemed all that different
31:16Until I found out
31:18What had happened
31:18Keely
31:19She had some really good information
31:21My heart goes out to her
31:22I think it's
31:23I think it was really tough on her
31:24Once she learned
31:25What had happened
31:26It makes my heart happy
31:30Knowing that she was right there
31:33In the building with us
31:35And that happened to her
31:37And just how I felt
31:40Because I turned back
31:42I felt
31:43Had I not turned back
31:45I could have probably helped her
31:46Her injuries were of such a nature
31:49That there was nothing
31:51That Keely could have done to help
31:52Mitra had died
31:54Right away
31:55And so would someone else
31:58Close to Mitra
31:59And tied to her murder
32:00Someone
32:01Who would send this case
32:03In a whole new direction
32:04On a quiet Portland street
32:21Just a mile away from his office
32:24Police discover Mitra's co-worker
32:26Jim Morgan
32:27Dead
32:28From a self-inflicted gunshot
32:30Detective Michaels
32:34How'd it happen?
32:40Jim Morgan's dead
32:41He shot himself
32:44And all at once
32:45The picture just kind of
32:47Unfolds in front of us
32:48Things kind of make sense
32:49From there
32:50When we send the forensics in
32:53To the crime lab
32:54And they come back
32:55And tell us
32:56Yeah
32:56That gun that Jim has
32:58Is the exact same gun
32:59That those casings and bullets
33:00Came out of
33:01Then we know
33:02He's the guy who did this
33:04Once detectives know
33:06Jim Morgan killed Mitra
33:08They create a timeline
33:10That links the two of them together
33:11Beginning on Friday
33:13October 21st
33:14The day before Mitra's murder
33:16You plan on working
33:17At all this weekend?
33:19Yes
33:19Saturday morning probably
33:20But Parmita has recital
33:22In the afternoon so
33:23And continuing on
33:27Saturday October 22nd
33:28After leaving her house
33:31Around 6.30 that morning
33:33Mitra was at her cubicle
33:36Just before 7
33:378.45
33:39Jim Morgan is entering
33:40The building
33:41He walked into his business
33:44That he's worked out
33:45For years
33:46Where he's going to retire from
33:47Where he and his wife
33:48Can like ride off
33:49Into the sunset
33:49With a great life
33:50I think Mitra saw him
33:56And realized what was
33:58About to happen
33:59What are you doing?
34:00What is this?
34:00A joke?
34:00There's a scream
34:03After the time of the homicide
34:08We could see him go
34:09Back down
34:10The stairway
34:12And out of the building
34:14Jim was not blinking
34:15Like he didn't look
34:17At the camera
34:17Nothing
34:17Just straight
34:18Here's the exit
34:19Walked straight to the exit
34:21And that was it
34:21Jim leaves the building
34:23At about 9.07
34:25Gets in his car
34:26Drives out
34:28After he killed her
34:31He just thought
34:31I don't have anywhere to go
34:33I'm not going to explain
34:34This to my wife
34:35Because she has no clue
34:36As to what's been going on
34:37Jim Morgan then
34:39Calls 911
34:40And then he shoots himself
34:46Detectives then
34:54Must break the agonizing news
34:55To Jim's wife Diane
34:57They hope she has some insight
34:59Into why her husband
35:01Of more than 20 years
35:02Did what he did
35:03You could have told
35:05Jim Morgan's wife
35:06The aliens had landed
35:07You know
35:08On the next block over
35:09And she wouldn't have been
35:10Any more shock
35:11Than she was then
35:12And I thought
35:13Right away
35:14That he must have been
35:15In an accident
35:16And they said
35:17That
35:19He committed suicide
35:23No
35:24Not Jim
35:26Not my husband
35:28You must have
35:29The wrong man
35:30I wish we did
35:31But it is your husband
35:33I had a picture
35:34Of us
35:35And I
35:36Asked them
35:37To please look
35:38And
35:39This is what
35:42Jim looks like
35:43Is that
35:44You know
35:44Is that what he looked like
35:46Because maybe
35:46That wasn't him
35:47And they knew
35:49It was him
35:50I'm sorry
35:53It's him
35:53He had his driver's license
35:56In his pocket
35:56And that's not the whole story
36:00What do you mean?
36:06When we told her
36:07That he had killed
36:08Mitra
36:09In the workplace
36:11In the workplace part
36:11Of committing suicide
36:12He murdered Mitra?
36:15What?
36:16We were hoping
36:17You could tell us
36:18He helped her at work
36:21We had dinners together
36:24They were friends of ours
36:28I don't know
36:33There were no signs
36:35Of anything
36:35No
36:37Jim woke up
36:39About 8 o'clock
36:40Wasn't normal
36:41For him
36:42To jump out of bed
36:43So quickly
36:44You're up early
36:46For a Saturday
36:47I have some things
36:49To get out of the way
36:50Before we go out later
36:51And I thought
36:52Why are you getting up
36:54So early?
36:57Where are you off to?
36:58I need some wood
36:59For the fence
37:00And I was like
37:03Okay well
37:03We had plans that night
37:04When will you be home?
37:09Soon
37:09He gave me a kiss
37:15And said goodbye
37:16And I said
37:18Okay bye
37:18And that's the last time
37:20I spoke to him
37:21What do I do now?
37:25How does somebody normal
37:26Do what he did?
37:28Turned into somebody
37:29That I didn't know
37:30I didn't know him anymore
37:31I don't have any insights
37:33I don't have any clues
37:35I don't have anything
37:36But if you look at
37:40What the build up was
37:41You look a bit lost
37:43Jim Morgan
37:45Nice to meet you
37:47Let me give you
37:48The 25 cent tour
37:49All the other employees
37:50Had said that
37:51He took Mitra in right away
37:53Jim was infatuated
37:55With Mitra
37:55Had a crush on her
37:58A crush
38:00Jim Morgan
38:01Was able to pass off
38:02To his wife and others
38:03As a friendship
38:04Jim
38:05He wasn't obsessed
38:06With her to the point
38:07Of doing anything
38:08Just because of Maury
38:08I don't know
38:09I don't know
38:09I don't know
38:10Quando detectives sit-down with Mitra's co-workers,
38:12they talk about how Jim slowly started to unravel.
38:16Returning to work that next week,
38:20it was still...
38:23The mood was heavy in the office.
38:25There were definitely moments
38:27when he was behaving strangely.
38:30I don't think there's any way to really know
38:31what was going through his mind.
38:35As time goes on, Jim became somewhat jealous
38:38of Mitra and Brett.
38:41Jim would follow them when they went to lunch.
38:45Lurking about as they went.
38:47It was super odd.
38:52Mitra.
38:53What? Jim, you scared me.
38:56I'm just protecting them.
38:58Protecting me?
38:59From Brett.
39:00Don't do anything stupid.
39:02I'm telling you this as a friend.
39:04Jim came to Mitra and was saying things about
39:07Mitra was being inappropriate with Brett.
39:11Mitra never had anything like that with Brett.
39:14She never had anything like that
39:16with any of her other co-workers.
39:21Even though Jim made Mitra uncomfortable,
39:23she never said a word to her husband.
39:25Do you think okay?
39:26Yeah.
39:27Is there something you're not telling me?
39:30Like, I love you?
39:32Come to bed.
39:36By October of 2016, Jim Morgan had gone off the rails.
39:40A week ago, he pounds on my cubicle.
39:47Just to kind of drive him nuts and make him jump.
39:49Cut it out, man.
39:51Cut it out, man.
39:53He was fine with sort of wanting her from a distance
39:57when it was just her and Maury.
39:58But when he thought that she liked Brett
40:01and that Brett liked her,
40:03all of a sudden, he just becomes explosive.
40:06I asked him to stop and he's like,
40:08I will if you will.
40:12It's the only thing I can think that set him off like this.
40:16Mitra stopped it before anything ever happened.
40:20Not that, uh, he even would've.
40:26I guess Jim saw something that wasn't there.
40:30Now she's gone.
40:32Forever.
40:41Wasn't who I married.
40:43I didn't marry a murderer.
40:45Jim would always joke, well, I've got four years,
40:5012 months, three days left until he's out of there
40:53because he was bored with insurance.
40:56What do you think?
40:57Um, Miami? Palm Springs?
40:59Nothing that could have ever given me any,
41:04any sort of reason to believe he would ever do that.
41:06How about Scottsdale?
41:08As long as there are plenty of sunny days ahead.
41:11See you guys later.
41:12Where are you heading?
41:13To the mall with Janie.
41:15My daughter.
41:19Doesn't have a dad.
41:21He missed her graduation.
41:24Picked me up something nice.
41:27I love that kid.
41:28It was somebody that you love, didn't ask for help.
41:40It took it as far and as beyond as possible.
41:46To have ruined so many lives, it just made no sense.
41:50I'll never forgive Jim what he did.
41:53I'll miss everything about him.
41:58I was shocked.
41:59I couldn't expect this kind of horrific events
42:04could really happen.
42:06No matter what the answer was,
42:08still Mitra was not come back to him and to their daughter.
42:15I miss mommy.
42:19So do I.
42:20To see that scene that someone lost
42:28a little girl lost her mother is not a pretty scene.
42:42It's not something that you can forget easily.
42:45Specifically, when these incidents
42:56and lost happened by a gunshot,
43:01a violence gunshot.
43:05This is why I couldn't forget that.
43:08And it's just a shame that this had to happen to her
43:12and that this guy had to take her life.
43:13Not only did he take her life,
43:15he took the life of her whole family.
43:17That they now have to deal with this.
43:19Do we really have to go back to Edom?
43:22We need to go home.
43:23I am angry at Jim for taking Mitra away from her family.
43:29It's like my daughter doesn't have a dad.
43:31And that's because of my husband.
43:40How do you, uh...
43:44How do you live with that?
43:47I thought this was home.
43:53So did I.
