Spurs 1 Wolves 1 - Liam Keen and Nathan Judah analysis
Transcript
00:00Hello I'm Nathan Dujo, I'm here with Wolves supporters. Mr Liam Keane with London Stadium
00:13where it's finished Spurs 1, Wolverhampton Wanderers 1, 93 minutes gone and Wolves were
00:17looking like their first three points of the season and Gio Paolini broke about a couple
00:23of thousand fans in the corner there, their hearts, our hearts and Vito Pereira and his staff. At the
00:28same time it will be hurting now but Wolves can look back on this game I think with a lot of pride and
00:34a lot of confidence more importantly going forward this season. Yeah there are positives to take from
00:39it and let's come on to those because it's really important to cover them but initially we're sat
00:44here after five consecutive Premier League defeats gutted at a 1-1 draw away at Spurs and the reason
00:50for that is because Wolves put in a performance I think was worthy of the win. Yeah the first half
00:56was you know pragmatic, they were solid enough without a lot of quality going forward, where they
01:03look a little bit at times with a couple of opportunities Sam Johnson with a couple of really
01:06good saves but otherwise Spurs weren't sort of opening Wolves up by any means and you know get
01:11through to half-time and nil-nil and you think right that is a solid enough start to the game.
01:15Santi Bueno gets his first Wolves goal 10 minutes into the second half and all of a sudden we're
01:19dreaming of three points and Wolves' performance from then onwards was actually the most impressive
01:23part of the day for me, of the evening rather because Wolves stifled Spurs, they were really
01:30good in possession, they were really good out of possession with their positioning before
01:34there was a lot, there was a few last week's tackles and putting your body on the line but
01:37the majority of it was actually managing the occasion really well and lots of really good
01:41performances both in players that started and players that came off on the bench. Spurs
01:45weren't very good at all in that second half, Spurs really struggled to break Wolves down
01:49and one ball falls luckily. It's a good finish. It takes a deflection, falls luckily. It's a
01:55fantastic finish but it's very fortunate the way it falls through and that's just the way
01:58football is sometimes. As I say, brilliant finish from Palina but it leaves us desperately frustrated
02:04because Wolves, based on that performance, should have won that game.
02:09Were they going to be a back four? Was it going to be a back three? Who knows? It was a back four
02:12to start with. They went with the majority of the team that beat Everton on Tuesday night and I think
02:15it worked well and then two substitutes to come on in the second half. They went back to a back three.
02:20I think maybe unforced with Matt Doherty picking up a yellow card. Gio Gomez got early substitution,
02:25early hook as well in the second half. I think for the same reason. We'll speak to Vitor afterwards
02:28but both worked out well and you know even the substitutes that came on, the likes of
02:32Jean-Rynne Bellegarde, Jackson Tatua. I thought everybody played a part today.
02:37Yeah, definitely. There was lots of good performance from the start but I'm glad you mentioned those two
02:40in Tatua and Bellegarde. I thought they made a real difference when they came on. I thought Minneti was very
02:44hard-working and did a lot of really good things in his 90-minute performance. Santi Brennan with
02:49the goal and the overall performance. I thought he was fantastic today. Sam Johnson with lots of
02:53good saves. You can go through the team really. There were lots of really good performances and
02:56that's why you try, as you mentioned at the top of the video, try and take some of the posses from him
03:01because you're on the board, you're off the mark, you've got your first point of the season.
03:05It's a tough away game at a good side and you put a performance in that was worthy, in my opinion,
03:10of picking the three points up. Wolves can now look at that and say, well, there's no reason that we
03:15can't go and get a performance, whether it's at home to Brighton next, you go away to Sunderland
03:19after some tough games to come, some big games to come. There's no reason you don't go and get your
03:23first win and follow that up very quickly. Wolves have to maintain a certain level of performance
03:29and considering they need wins sooner rather than later, they cannot afford to now creep into
03:35inconsistency. They have to continue to perform. Vito Pereira said that the time is now really,
03:40you know, my players have to start. We can't wait. We can't wait to gel. We can't wait for new
03:43signings to get used to English football. We need to start performing. There were plenty of players
03:49that stood up and were counted today, weren't there? Yeah, there were. And that's pleasing,
03:54I think, because I really respected the way Vito went about that press conference yesterday.
03:58I thought that him admitting that the way he phrased it previously was wrong and now trying to put a
04:03little bit of responsibility onto himself and the players to say, look, we've not been good enough
04:08and we've got to perform now, I think is the right message at this point of the season. You know,
04:12you've lost five games coming into this game and you've got to now start to give these fans something
04:18because the fans are there, you know, desperately supporting the team and winning them on. But
04:24I've often seen a terrible product out on the pitch. Today, yeah, there's, do you lack a little bit
04:30of quality going forward? Yeah, definitely. Of course. Are you rough around the edges? Of course.
04:34But that was a performance I think the fans can get behind and be proud of. A way, as I say,
04:38a tough place to come and a good side. My biggest criticism from that second half,
04:42which there isn't many because I think it was a good performance, is that you're now
04:46ruining some of the missed chances because Wolves actually opened Spurs up quite a few times in that
04:50second half on the break. Belegaard got into some fantastic positions. Hugo Bueno had a shot.
04:54Tony Arakadari put himself about when he came on because last I thought was really
04:57struggled today and Arakadari came on and made a bit of a difference and you have to take that
05:02second goal. Now, Wolves should have seen the game out anyway and they haven't. But in hindsight now
05:07you look at it and think, if you get that second goal, you've won the game. And Wolves had to do
05:11that. And that's the biggest mistake and criticism for me is you don't take the opportunities in front
05:16of you. Yeah, I think they definitely have their spars. I think Spurs have their spars as well.
05:19I think probably when you look back at the game, I would say maybe 1-1 is probably a fair result,
05:22but I completely understand what you're saying. I think the Wolves were so much better than what they have
05:26done. And really, what have they done today? They've kept it simple. They've gone back to basics.
05:31No crazy errors, no horrendous errors at the back. Possession-based football. That's what they needed.
05:36Whether it's a back four or a back three, if you keep to those principles, you're going to be in this
05:41game. And that's exactly what they did. Yeah, and you had to strip it back a little bit, didn't you?
05:45Because Wolves were making too many mistakes. They were too easy to get at. But their performance is there
05:50with players that are coming from McCulloch. It was a brave team selection from Vito Pereira.
05:54Dock from out the squad to captain. Exactly. Santi Bueno, who I've been critical of in the past. I think
06:00he's been very good recently. One of the best centre-backs you would have thought out of these
06:02guys now. At the moment. I mean, obviously, Krejci continues his good performance as well. But
06:06Santi Bueno, yeah, I mean, I think fairly and rightly critical of him in the past. But these last few
06:12weeks, these last few games, and again today, and of course getting that goal, I've been really impressed with what I've seen
06:17from him. He looks physically, I think, better suited to the Premier League. And he's performing
06:22when Wolves need him to. Which is a blessing, really, because we've got so many players that
06:25have made some errors and have performed poorly and have been dragged out of the team again.
06:29So he'll, I imagine, keep his place going forward and deserves to. So yeah, look, there are players
06:33that have stepped up. There are reasons to be positive. But when you concede in the way you did,
06:38in the manner in which you did after winning the game 1-0 for the vast majority of that second
06:43half, it's so desperately, desperately disappointing. Well, there's no zero, there's no O in that column.
06:49They've got a point. They are on the board for the season, which, like you say, at this moment in
06:53time feels a little bit sour. But I think as the week goes on and when they can go back to Compton Park,
06:57it is something to build on with a big game coming home against Brighton. But they've got to start
07:02performing at home. If they're going to stay in this division, yes, we can get points away from home,
07:06but they're going to have to start winning games at home. They're going to have to make Molineux a fortress,
07:09and it's been anything but that recently. Yeah, Molineux is going to be so important
07:13to this Wolves team going forward. And the players have got to give the fans something.
07:18And if they do, the fans will be with them. The fans will be there. But you've got to give them
07:21something. You've got to start one. You've got to cut out the silly errors, which they have done today.
07:27I'm not suggesting you have to go and necessarily dominate possession and batter Brighton,
07:31because they're probably on a good side. I don't think you can do that to many teams,
07:33actually. Exactly. But you've got to be effective in the game plan. Wolves were effective today.
07:37They have been, for the most part, against Newcastle, despite losing that game.
07:42You've got to find a way to be effective against a Brighton side and give the fans something.
07:46If you can do those two things, you give yourself a great opportunity of getting
07:49a result. But again, Brighton side, not going to be easy.
07:51I thought I was going to get a .com in there. I was seconds away.
