00:00The journey of The Summer I Turned Pretty has finally reached the end of its television
00:04road, and what a ride it's been.
00:06I think we can all agree that the ending was one of those bittersweet ones.
00:10It made us pretty happy by finally bringing Conrad together with Belly.
00:14However, it also disappointed a lot of us by excluding some key details from the book's
00:18ending, and I think you all know what I am referring to.
00:21Thankfully though, Jenny Han and Prime Video have revealed that Belly's story isn't over
00:25just yet.
00:26The saga will continue, and this time conclude for good, with a feature film, directed by
00:31Jenny Han herself and co-written with Sarah Kucerka.
00:35So let's talk about it.
00:37As you all know, the finale of season 3 ended in Paris.
00:40Conrad surprised Belly outside her apartment, who had been living in France, embracing the
00:45independence and self-discovery that came with stepping out of her small-town summers and
00:49into a broader world.
00:50I mean, good for her.
00:52But despite the excitement of her Parisian life, the unresolved tension with Conrad resurfaced
00:57once she saw him in front of her door.
01:00He got the chance to know her new friends, her life, and even wondered if she was dating
01:04someone else.
01:05Belly, on the other hand, wrestled with her own fears and feelings.
01:09She basically got into an existential crisis with the visit of Conrad.
01:13Because, up until that point, she was pretty happy with her life in France.
01:17She was quite literally someone else here.
01:19She was now an independent, bold, femme fatale-like, attractive woman who lives a carefree life.
01:25But Conrad's return reminded her that his is not really who she is.
01:29And no, she can't avoid facing her true self any longer.
01:32So, needless to say, the reunion wasn't immediate bliss.
01:36In fact, it was pretty messy, filled with awkwardness and tension.
01:40But ultimately, they confronted their feelings, reconciled, and declared their love for one
01:44another.
01:45As I mentioned in my review video, the ending was basically a mix of sex and the city,
01:50and Bridget Jones's diary, and I truly enjoyed it.
01:53And yet, I could not brush off the feeling that some things were missing.
01:57But I'll get to that in a second.
01:59Meanwhile, back in the US, Jeremiah honed his skills as a chef, while Taylor organized
02:04a PR campaign for him.
02:06Taylor and Steven decided to work on their own future together.
02:09Now, the odd thing was the fact that while Belly and Conrad ended the series together
02:13with each other but alone when it comes to their families and friends, Jeremiah ended
02:17the series with a new love interest, and surrounded by people who love him.
02:21And, I don't know if it is just me, but it made me think about this reunion between
02:26Conrad and Belly.
02:27In fact, I genuinely believe that this was an intentional choice by Jenny Han to show Conrad
02:32and Belly isolated from anyone else.
02:35Because she was preparing a brand new conflict for the upcoming movie.
02:38Now, even though the series largely concluded with Conrad and Belly together,
02:42apparently Han knew there was still more story to tell.
02:45She revealed that the film will chronicle the one big milestone left in Belly's journey.
02:50She said,
02:59She wanted to give this next chapter its full due, rather than squeezing it into a hurried epilogue.
03:07So, this means that the film will explore what happens after Belly and Conrad reunite,
03:11addressing the realities of dating your ex's brother, and navigating the lingering presence
03:16of family and friends from past relationships.
03:19She said,
03:20It's like,
03:21What happens when you are dating your ex's brother?
03:23And you have to see them, and you have to be in their life still.
03:26What does that look like?
03:28What's especially exciting is that the movie will allow the story to expand in ways a fourth season
03:33might not have.
03:34Han explained that, for her, three seasons felt complete.
03:38Han said,
03:39It feels very complete to me as three seasons.
03:42Another season would be just a lot more story to cover,
03:45and also a lot more conflict that I think people don't really want.
03:49They were so eager to get Belly and Conrad together.
03:52Do you really want like a season of problems for them?
03:54So, clearly she believes that a film format provides a more focused, impactful medium
03:59to explore this final stage of Belly's journey.
04:02And, who am I to oppose her?
04:04That being said,
04:06Considering the fact that it takes more or less two years to produce a movie these days,
04:10I hate the idea that this story did not finish with the third season of the show,
04:14and is forcing us to wait even longer.
04:16But let me know if I am alone in these thoughts.
04:19By the way, the announcement of the film was made in Paris,
04:22following the season 3 finale screening,
04:24with Belly and Conrad's actors snapping photos in front of a new marquee that read,
04:29The Summer I Turned Pretty The Movie.
04:31I know a lot of you guys were caught off guard,
04:34many unaware that the series would continue beyond its televised episodes.
04:37Yet, as Han explained, the decision to transition to film was deliberate,
04:42providing a space to give this concluding chapter the weight and attention it deserves.
04:47She said,
04:48There is another big milestone left in Belly's journey,
04:51and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due.
04:54She said,
04:55Acknowledging the support of Prime Video in making this final chapter possible.
04:59So, it is said that the film promises to delve into the complex emotions that follow a long-awaited
05:04reunion.
05:05Han described the final season moments in Paris as particularly poignant,
05:09noting that Belly faced fears of hurting not just Conrad,
05:13but the entire family she holds dear.
05:15She said,
05:16When he says,
05:17You're stuck with me forever,
05:19because it's not something that she can really go back on if they go down this road,
05:23she knows it's for keeps.
05:24And I think when you already had a big blow up where she feels a lot of shame and guilt over
05:29what happened, you're fearful of hurting people.
05:32While the release date is still under wraps,
05:34Han has completed a draft of the script, and the project is actively in development.
05:39She emphasized that the timing is important, wanting the actors to feel closer to true adulthood,
05:45reflecting the character's growth authentically on screen.
05:48She said,
05:49I think the closer we can get them to true adulthood,
05:52to me, it feels like the most poignant and beautiful way to tell the story.
05:56So, perhaps the movie will come out sooner than the typical two years period?
06:00Who knows?
06:01As far as the plot is concerned, we know that we will finally get to see Belly,
06:05reading Susanna's letter.
06:07We will also get to see how Belly and Conrad managed to continue their relationship long distance.
06:12So, there will be a lot of letters, a lot of yearning,
06:15and preparations to face the family together once they are in the U.S. as a couple.
06:20So, more similar to the book's admittedly rushed, and yet still satisfactory ending.
06:25Also, we will get an explanation on who took those pictures in the Christmas that they showed
06:30us at the very end of the series.
06:32That being said, all these will be speed through as the main topic of the movie will be the wedding.
06:37This means we will get a major time jump, as we know they dated for a while before getting married.
06:42Of course, Belly still could not wait to get until 30, as Susanna predicted.
06:47But still, at least she won't be at university, and Conrad will be a doctor already.
06:51We will also see Jeremiah in a new relationship, which will be used as a tool to prove that he is
06:56truly over Belly now, and supporting her relationship with Conrad.
07:01Now personally, I doubt anyone can be over a relationship that lasted four long years,
07:05and ended up with a disastrous wedding.
07:08Especially if your bride ends up with your brother in the end.
07:11But yes, I am excited to see how will they pull off this plotline.
07:14Let me know what you are hoping to see in the upcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty movie.
