01:30ڈانلڈ ٹرمپ
01:59held in prison. It's where other Taliban members were held in prison. It's where U.S. aircraft
02:04used to take off from and bombard the Taliban. So for them to hand it over to the Trump
02:09administration would really put their own legitimacy in question. And then secondly,
02:16you know, logistically, it would be quite difficult. I mean, he said 5,000 troops,
02:20but you would need force protection. It's not as if the United States trusts the Taliban
02:24and there's also ISK roaming around. So it would be difficult to re-secure that base.
02:32It would be very costly.
02:34So in terms of Taliban's own credibility, but even if it's coming in from the United States,
02:39which obviously is, you know, one of the economic backbones and guarantor to the entire Doha
02:45agreement as well. The Taliban have moved on in the last four to five years and we've seen them
02:50building up relationships with China as well as the United States. I wonder if my question here
02:55specifically is related to the Chinese part of it, because in Donald Trump's approach,
03:00it's very clear there were no minced words in it, in which he's actually stressed about what the
03:05reason for Bagram is and how he requires it for reasons to come to China.
03:11Yeah, well, look, I actually think the Chinese are going to laugh to themselves if the Trump
03:16administration actually goes through with this, because they'll be busy building ships and building
03:21a modern Navy and the Trump administration is going to be busy trying to take over Bagram again.
03:26I understand that it's strategically close to alleged Chinese nuclear sites, but it's an old
03:35approach to warfare. And I think the Chinese are busy modernizing their military.
03:40But do you think that the entire way that this argument is phrased, does it actually make sense
03:49or is there something else, a pressure from somewhere else to ask for something else? Do you think that
03:55that could be one of the reasons as well? It could be. It's hard to know with the Trump
03:59administration. It could be one of a few things. It could be that the Trump administration is simply
04:04saying this to annoy China as part of its strategy. It could be for domestic political reasons.
04:12There's always been a lot of criticism from the Republicans for abandoning Bagram and for Biden's
04:17withdrawal. And it could be that Trump simply wants to get back Bagram so he can say, look, Biden left
04:23Bagram and I had to go get it back and to score political points at home. It could be, although I
04:29highly doubt this is the reason that they want it for counterterrorism purposes. I don't think that's the
04:34reason, because it doesn't make much sense. It would be better to simply partner with Pakistan.
04:39So I think the reasons are either that it actually views it as a strategic asset against China or it's
04:45being used as a political prop.
04:48But even if you look at it in terms of the larger politics that surround this entire Bagram debate
04:53and the wider connotations attached to it, we've seen him meeting Pakistani leadership. We've seen him
04:59meeting the Middle Eastern and Gulf country leadership as well on the sides of the UNGA.
05:05But simultaneously, we've seen some words being exchanged on the Russia and Ukraine front as well.
05:10Do you think Bagram sort of centers in any of these arguments the way that the United States is framing
05:15its policy right now?
05:16Do I think Bagram centers in terms of Russia and Ukraine?
05:27It's possible, but no, I don't think that's the main driver. I don't think that's the main driver of Bagram.
05:32But we've also seen, you know, in recent times, the House passing sort of a bill for the next, you know,
05:42intelligence sharing formula as well, saying that they'll be able to share intelligence with opposing
05:48factions to the Afghan Taliban by next year. That bill still has to sail through different processes as well
05:54for becoming part of the entire act. But do you think that there is a sort of a toleration where the Taliban
06:01have sort of, you know, exasperated the sort of waiting and patience of the United States?
06:08And that's why we see all of this coming in together?
06:12Well, you're talking about the amendment to the NDA.
06:16First of all, I'd be shocked if they're not already sharing intelligence with Afghan opposition in a sort of
06:22clandestine way. But but who knows how those things work?
06:25But in terms of Congress, you know, members of Congress trying to make it an official policy.
06:31Yeah, that's to be expected, although I think the opposition doesn't really have much much strength in Afghanistan.
06:37But no, even that, I don't think that's the reason I think this is I don't think
06:40President Trump operates in that kind of way that's coordinated with Congress or even responds to much pressure from Congress.
06:47But I think it really probably has to do with either the political messaging at home where he wants to say,
06:55look, I went and got Bagram back and Joe Biden abandoned it, probably combined a little bit with
07:01a view from his Pentagon that if they have this base and it's close to China, it's a strategic asset.
07:07His Pentagon looks at things in a very basic kind of old school way, which is why wouldn't we have a base
07:14that's close to China if we could have a base that's close to China? So that's their mentality.
07:20So one last question before I let you go, Adam. In terms of the future prospects for Afghanistan,
07:25the way that things have shaped up till now, based on these current statements,
07:29as well as coming in from different parts of Pakistan as well, from different segments within Pakistan as well,
07:35what do you see in the near future? By the end of this year, how do we see Afghanistan?
07:38Do you see any shift in policy? Do you see any major CT ops on ground or any major shift in terms of
07:45how the larger contours of the region could be shaped? Or do you think that it's going to be business as usual?
07:51Look, it's always possible. I'm not in government, so everything I say is speculative.
07:56But with the Trump administration, it's always possible that they come up with some grand bargain
08:02with the Taliban, where perhaps some amount of U.S. troops are allowed to be in Bagram.
08:08And then they say, and then, you know, to the United States, President Trump, to U.S. citizens, he says,
08:14hey, we've taken back Bagram. But in reality, he hasn't. He just has some troops there.
08:19And in exchange, he offers the Taliban recognition. And then we have normalized relations.
08:25That's possible. I mean, look what's going on in Syria.
08:27The President of Syria, who had a $10 million bounty on his head, similar to Sir Rajuddin Haqqani,
08:33is meeting with Trump and is going to address the U.N. General Assembly.
08:37So anything is possible.
08:39Thank you very much. Thank you, Adam. Anything is possible.
08:42The President of the United States, the U.N. General Assembly of U.S.
09:12Taliban will give us a great conversation.
09:14Break from U.S. Partner of U.S. Department, and the U.S. Department for U.S. Department.

09:54Do you want to call them?
09:57Yes, President Trump has a good point.
10:04There are two angles,
10:08one is domestic angle,
10:10where he has a supporter base
10:12which has been mobilized.
10:15This is a larger strategic angle.
10:18This is where we can see that
10:20we can see how many times we can see
10:23that we can achieve.
10:25We said before,
10:26we said that we have weapons
10:29that we can see.
10:31Then we can see that we can see
