00:01With the indictment of James Comey, the Trump administration is wielding a new weapon against

00:06the president's political enemies, criminal prosecution.

00:10The former FBI director has been charged with lying to Congress after Donald Trump urged

00:14the Justice Department to act against him.

00:18Comey released a video saying he would stand up to Trump despite the costs.

00:22My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal

00:28judicial system, and I'm innocent.

00:31So let's have a trial.

00:33Comey was FBI director from 2013 to 2017.

00:37There he opened two particularly controversial investigations, one into the emails of former

00:42Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the other into Russian support for Trump's first election

00:48campaign.

00:50Trump supporters still want retaliation for the latter, despite Comey being fired months into

00:56Trump's first term, and government reviews confirming that Moscow did indeed interfere.

01:02Thursday's indictment is short on details.

01:05It charges Comey with lying to a Senate committee in 2020 when he said he had not authorized a

01:11leak to the media.
