00:00According to satellite images analyzed by the Associated Press on Thursday,
00:05Iran has likely conducted an undeclared missile test at its Imam Khomeini spaceport.
00:10This highlights Tehran's efforts to maintain its weapons program despite the 12-day war with Israel in June.
00:17Last week's test at a circular pad that has previously hosted other significant launches
00:22by Iran's civilian space program has not been officially acknowledged.
00:27A single lawmaker in Iran's parliament, however, claimed, without offering evidence,
00:33that Tehran tested a possible intercontinental ballistic missile.
00:37The test and the claim raise concerns that Iran may be trying to expand the reach of its missiles
00:42as tensions remain high ahead of United Nations sanctions,
00:46which are likely to be reimposes this weekend over Tehran's nuclear program,
00:51as it also repairs missile sites that were struck by the Israelis.
00:54On September 18, Iranian social media users posted images of the sky over Seminan province,
01:02showing what appeared to be a rocket's contrail at sunset.
01:05Iranian state media did not report on the incident,
01:08and Iranian officials did not acknowledge what caused the contrail.
01:12The circular pad at Imam Khomeini's spaceport, which is approximately 230 kilometers, 145 miles,
01:19southeast of Iran's capital, Tehran, in Semin,
01:23is depicted in satellite images taken prior to that time by Planet Labs PBC.
01:28These images show the pad being painted blue and surrounded by red, white, and green lines,
01:35the colors of the Iranian flag.
01:37But in satellite images since September 18, the pad appeared discolored,
01:42though it wasn't fully clear until a more detailed planet image requested by the AP taken this Wednesday.
01:48That image shows significant scorch marks,
01:51the pattern of which resembled scorching scene at the pad following past launches.
01:56When rockets launch, the flames from their engines pour down onto pads.
02:01Fabian Hins, a research fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies,
02:07who studies missiles, said the scale of the scorching suggested Iran launched a solid fuel missile
02:12as burning aluminum oxide particles caused such marks.
02:17Mohsen Zangana, a member of the Iranian parliament,
02:20claimed on Saturday on Iranian state television
02:23that the Islamic Republic had launched an intercontinental ballistic missile on Thursday.
02:28He portrayed it as a sign of Iran's strength as it faces challenges from Israel in the West.
02:34The night before last, we tested one of the country's most advanced missiles,
02:38which until now had not, so to speak, been trialed.
02:42And that test was successful, he said.
02:44He then added,
02:46In other words,
02:47I mean to say that even under these conditions,
02:49we are conducting a security test of an intercontinental range missile.
02:54Zangana did not elaborate on where he got his information,
02:57nor did he provide any evidence to support his assertion.
03:01Iranian parliament members have made exaggerated claims in the past.
03:05Intercontinental ballistic missiles typically have ranges greater than 5,500 kilometers,
03:123,415 miles.
03:15That would go far beyond the 2,000 kilometer, 1,240 mile,
03:20range that is said to be permitted by Iran's supreme leader,
03:23Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
03:25The range of 2,000 kilometers encompasses much of the Middle East,
03:30including Israel and American military bases in the region.
03:34An intercontinental missile would at least put all of Europe in rage.
03:38A request for clarification from the U.S. military central command,
03:42which is in charge of its operations in the Middle East,
