00:10Investigators are looking for several men who made off with what officials describe as priceless jewels following a brazen robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday morning.
00:20NPR was informed by a spokesperson for the museum that the suspects broke in through a window that led to the Apollo Gallery,
00:26which houses some of the museum's most valuable exhibits, shortly after the museum opened.
00:32Armed with small chainsaws and box cutters, they smashed display cases before fleeing on Yamaha T-Max scooters toward a nearby highway.
00:40Authorities say the exact list of stolen items is still being drawn up, but the pieces are believed to come from the museum's Napoleonic collection.
00:48Culture Minister Rakata Dady told the French TV channel TF1 that one of the stolen jewels was later found near the museum.
00:55Apparently abandoned as the thieves fled.
00:58The Louvre spokesperson described the items as being of inestimable cultural and historical value.
01:05France's interior minister, Laurent Nunez, called the theft a major, highly organized operation that lasted just seven minutes.
01:14The missing items were of true heritage value, truly priceless.
01:19Nunez told France into radio, adding,
01:22There's a judicial investigation underway.
01:25Before entering, the robbers, according to Nunez, used a truck-mounted lift platform to reach a window.
01:32He said there were three to four suspects in total, describing them as a very experienced team that acted extremely quickly,
01:38and adding that all central police units in Paris have been mobilized to track them down.
01:43The museum was quickly evacuated, and will remain closed Sunday to preserve evidence for investigators.
01:50One of the Louvre's most famous rooms, the Apollo Gallery houses many of France's royal treasures,
01:55and will reopen in 2020 after extensive renovations.
