00:00a fire leaves one woman dead and a five-year-old missing I never thought that this would be an
00:12arson to cover up a homicide to cover up an abduction a man with a dark past becomes the
00:20focus of the investigation could hurt a pin drop in that room we all knew his name it was a shock
00:25to everyone could one man hold all the clues all right I'm leaving he was gonna leave and we
00:32wanted to keep him there investigators searching for answers in the interrogation room every suspect
00:50accused of the crime has the right to remain silent many agree to be interrogated anyway but
00:56they can stop the interview at any moment making it a race against time justice hangs in the balance
01:20the fire was intense it was in a double-wide mobile home and those tend to burn very readily
01:33when I arrived on scene there was a fair amount of damage some of the windows had been blown out a
01:42distance away from the house it appeared that there may have been some type of a vapor explosion pressure
01:49built up inside when gasoline was ignited that pushed the glass out from the frame there was a bedroom that
02:01had some fire damage and in that area was where there was a red plastic gasoline container that seemed
02:08extremely out of place some of these things just didn't seem normal for regular fire
02:19shortly after crews put out the fire inside this Bemidji mobile home investigators found a body inside
02:29once we looked inside we found out that there was a body of a female and there was a mattress on top of
02:41her after removing some debris it was noticed that her hands were in fact bound with what appeared to
02:49be duct tape it turned it into a homicide investigation at that point and belief that someone was trying to
02:58cover something up by setting the place on fire police are investigating the death at the mobile home as
03:06murder and they are trying to piece together a timeline of events our victim at the scene was Melissa
03:14Norby Melissa's cousin had called me that morning and says please tell me it's not true and I was like
03:22what are you talking about and she goes Melissa's house is on fire and I'm like what my daughter is over
03:28there an officer contacted me and said that there was a female at the barricades that said her daughter
03:36had spent the night with Melissa so I went out I saw Amanda we searched through again we were confident
03:57there was no other human remains in the fire it went from a homicide investigation to now we had an
04:04active missing child case it was discovered that five-year-old had been visiting the residents the
04:10evening that the fire occurred the weekend of the 22nd of June Melissa called me she said can I come get
04:18your daughter to spend the night with me it was routine she would take my kids overnight and you know
04:24sometimes she would take them for three days because I trusted her I asked Amanda about what
04:31their fire safety plan would be at home I wanted to know what her daughter would do in a fire and
04:37Amanda said that her daughter would go outside and she would hide a team of investigators and volunteers
04:44searched the area but they could not find the missing five-year-old we were thinking there was no way that if
04:50we hadn't found her that you know we thought that she had been taken I never thought in a million years that this
04:57would be an arson to cover up a homicide to cover up an abduction this girl's been missing since roughly three o'clock in the
05:06morning we're worried that time is not on our side we're worried that we're going to be recovering as opposed to rescuing I was really scared to hear about it all the time if you don't find your
05:20child within first what 24 hours you probably won't get her back my heart dropped to the floor I said I
05:28don't care what you have to do find her we began to do victimology talking to everyone who may provide
05:36us some little piece of information about Melissa's life we started to learn more about Melissa Norby's life
05:44through interviews with co-workers and her friends Melissa's cousin was interviewed by agents regarding
05:51Melissa's relationships with other males her cousin told the agents that she was aware that Melissa had
05:57been seeing a male recently from the Bemidji area so you are the cousin to Melissa correct we talked about
06:07possible people who would be associated with Melissa or around her I knew the name Jake from very personal
06:18conversations Melissa and I had she said they had been playing it rough she was into not S&M but more like
06:27like daddy little girl stuff like that Melissa is always online Melissa referred to him as Jake she was
06:40also able to provide that this individual also owned a like a food truck we called the city clerk looking for
06:48our food truck licensees and she told us Jake's eats is owned by Jacob Kinn could hurt a pin drop in that room we all knew his name
07:04it was like a light bulb went off because we we were familiar with him in investigations Jacob Kinn had child
07:14pornography convictions he had tried to purchase a young girl online for photographing purposes based
07:23on his past history based on his relationship with Melissa Jacob Kinn was likely our guy he was on
07:31probation at the time of this investigation we asked the probation officer to call him and say you know
07:39how these things work every time a kid goes missing they always look at the people around probation for
07:45similar crimes just come on in it's not a big deal you'll be excluded very quickly the whole idea of making
07:53a very nonchalant encounter the first thing we do we reach out to the cell phone company and begin to get
08:02locations for Jacob's cell phone we wanted to know exactly where he was
08:06agent Girardi and agent Musaeus had been tasked with interviewing Mr. Kinn when he arrived at the
08:36law enforcement center that night largely because they didn't know him they didn't have any
08:40connection to him all right you came into the police department we're inside the interview room
08:45we got two officers talking you're not under arrest you understand that yep and Jacob there's any point
08:51that you don't want to talk to us you know walk right out the door and walk through the double
08:54where it's just like you came in it's fun when Ken first came in it was important for us to just
09:02establish rapport with him that was my goal not challenge him or get him upset that he would
09:08walk out of the interview room here's the deal we get missing kids guess who the first people we
09:15talked to us yeah I already knew that yeah and that's why you're here you've seen the reports of
09:23this missing girl have you seen I haven't seen any reports okay um my ex brought it up because her
09:30boyfriend works for the fire department yeah did you hear about the fire um yeah okay I do know
09:37that lady actually um and what's her name Melissa Nari if that's right when's the last time that you've
09:45seen her like six or eight months ago oh so it's been a long time yeah he didn't know that Melissa had
09:52talked to her cousin about Jacob being back in her life so he probably thought that we weren't aware
10:00of that information you know there was a fire you know there was a body found um we don't know
10:09what happened okay I stopped at her house once was that house at Hillcrest yeah okay that was like
10:20a year and a half ago when I stopped there as we're interviewing Jacob and we know because we've talked
10:28to all these other people who say they're in a relationship they know each other they know each
10:34other well and I'm watching to see how he is gonna answer the question he is distancing himself from
10:43her and there's only one reason why deadly house fire yesterday morning fire started around 3 30 in the
11:00morning police in Bemidji search for a five-year-old girl she was last seen wearing a black shirt a pink
11:07skirt and a pink bandage on her arm
11:09all right last 48 hours
11:26oh let's see um we want him to lock in his time frame establish his his timeline on where he was
11:37and who he had been with where'd you just come from um well I was fishing up north okay fishing where
11:46we just want to keep him talking because the more he talks the more comfortable he is
12:03so when we do ask the hard questions he feels comfortable enough with our relationship to answer
12:10okay let's uh just so I can verify whereabouts so if I'm going to drive up there what does it look
12:19like what something you know okay I don't know what really this has to do with tonight though I mean
12:30it's okay okay well help me out with it so we can cross out our list our resort
12:38good mark resort we'll sign it says resort okay how many cabins are there I don't know
12:48I haven't come back but I'm I just don't know why it matters you know where it was fishing tonight
12:57there was very little eye contact he was he had held a defensive posture he became defensive
13:06over very basic questions to establish alibi when these were questions that most people would have
13:14no problem answering having that prior knowledge of where his cell phone location was and he started
13:20to give us a different story of his location were you fishing with anybody he had no knowledge that we
13:29had a cell phone location prior to the interview so from seven till you know a little while ago you're
13:36out fishing yeah do you you're pretty sure of your time break I'm positive okay he told us that he had
13:47been fishing by North Holm Minnesota but his actual location was near Big Fork Minnesota and those two
13:55locations were approximately 30 miles apart so we knew that was likely a lie but lies are just as good as
14:06the truth in our business especially when we can prove that he's lying everything you told us is
14:11the truth you're not I your whereabouts anything like that my whereabouts are exactly what it was
14:18his story about going to where he was at was just a blatant lie at this point I'm not confronting him
14:28on those lies I'm just letting him talk I'm fairly laid back you'll see that my legs are kind of
14:34stretched out my arms are are crossed in fact I'm pretending to sound somewhat disinterested and the
14:42reason for that is I'm gathering information the more information we're gathering the more
14:48relationship building is occurring this Melissa did you ever have sex with me never even years ago no do
15:00you have any way to get all over no yeah did she ever want to have sex with you did she tell you that she
15:10she texted flirty stuff but and when was the last time that you got a text message from her
15:17wait
15:18it's true
15:19he's already told us some stuff that contradicts what he told us before I didn't have a way to get
15:27a hold of her but she's flirty in her text messages
15:30Jake everything you told us is true yes there's nothing that's going to interfere with your
15:36recollection of your timeline and where you were once we felt we got all that information from him
15:43it was time to start confronting him on what we actually knew and to find out why he doesn't want
15:48to go there
15:49tonight the investigation continues five-year-old was discovered missing after a fatal mobile home fire
16:18there is a time in which the investigators determine we are moving from an interview to a confrontation
16:36Jake
16:38we got reports that you had a relationship with Melissa
16:43there was never actually a relationship
16:46um
16:47which is what I already said
16:50it was a balance of how hard should we push him and and confront him on what we know
16:57what about our co-workers where she's working now
17:01I don't know any of the co-workers
17:03okay well she the co-workers indicated that
17:07you guys were having sex
17:10I don't know any of the co-workers so I can't say anything to that
17:15Jake remains in the same position he has been in this entire interview
17:20every chance that he gets to say I didn't do it he's saying I didn't do it
17:26they said you're having sex you're again saying no way
17:29we're at a stalemate here
17:34there were several times where Paul or I would leave the room
17:41sometimes we find people confess better to one person than two
17:47who can put you at that lake
17:55nobody
17:58nobody
17:59I'm still not seeing why that matters
18:03at all
18:04I'll tell you why
18:05basically take your cell phone doesn't put you in that spot
18:10we started asking very pointed questions and questions that challenged his alibi and challenged
18:18him to his story to us getting him to try to account for the information that we know
18:26the frustration level increased with him being uncomfortable answering questions you could you could see that in his demeanor
18:53Paul and I both leave the room and that was a time in which we wanted to make sure we'd cover all our bases
19:23when Jacob Kennedy showed up the sheriff's department we observed right away that his boots were wet his pants were wet
19:31we walked outside and took a look at his vehicle and saw flower material and weeds
19:36so it looked like he'd been driving off of the road
19:39Jacob parked right in front of the law enforcement center
19:42his vehicle looked like he'd been driving out in the field certainly not to a resort to go fishing like he said he was
19:48we said all right let's do a search warrant on the vehicle let's do a search warrant on this person and for his house
19:55the atmosphere at the police department at that point was like a full court press
20:00everybody is high intensity
20:03we're aware of the clock
20:05if we don't find her in the first 24 hours
20:08the chances of her being alive are pretty much none
20:11pretty much none
20:12we'd step out of the room not only to get advice on what to ask next but
20:16what's Jacob's body language looking like without us in the room
20:20he appeared stressed
20:24he appeared as though this was the last place he wanted to be
20:29all right I'm leaving now
20:31like I said I was going to do a run
20:33five times but they kept like
20:36goodbye
20:38he was going to leave and we wanted to keep him there
20:49I don't want to hold him in the room because then constitutionally it looks like a detention
20:56we're still waiting for search warrants
20:58we're still waiting for other pieces of information
21:01we want to keep him in that room
21:03we kind of walked this fine line hoping that he stays there
21:07willingly
21:09he probably thought the gas can went up in the fire and was surprised that there was actually a gas stand fully intact
21:16still at the at the fire scene
21:29the entire focus of our evening is this little girl
21:31yeah
21:32I didn't do anything to the little girl I haven't seen the little girl I haven't seen Melissa in a long time
21:36I haven't seen Melissa in a long time
21:39I haven't done anything
21:43what we're going to do is we're going to proceed
21:45the confrontation of we think that you abducted the fire scene
21:49the fire scene
21:51the entire focus of our evening is this little girl
21:53yeah
21:55I didn't do anything to the little girl I haven't seen the little girl
21:57I haven't seen Melissa in a long time
22:00we're going to proceed
22:01the confrontation of we think that you abducted the five-year-old occurs right here
22:08we're going to collect some evidence
22:10and the evidence will show either you did or you didn't
22:13okay, like what?
22:15any evidence on you?
22:17any evidence in your vehicle?
22:18any evidence in your house?
22:20we're going to be executing a search warrant
22:23it's fine
22:25you can't have access to those things right now
22:28I have to
22:30I can't sleep anywhere else
22:31and you don't have the search warrant yet
22:33that's
22:35it's being done
22:36I'll go check the status of the court orders
22:41alright
22:43so what happens when I drive away?
22:45um
22:47until
22:49I don't see a court order
22:51I don't see a warrant
22:53I'm trying to
22:55play along
22:58exit
23:00been telling you guys the f***ing truth
23:04can we run you up to your house and get you some clothes?
23:07no
23:08you gotta go
23:09sit down
23:10no
23:11sit down
23:12you said I was free to leave
23:13sit down
23:14you said I was free to leave
23:15sit down
23:16we all knew that Jacob Kinn was likely our guy
23:19we were very aware
23:21of the urgency
23:22and the time
23:23that we didn't have
23:24we want to keep him in that room
23:26to gather the evidence
23:27to find this little girl
23:28at this point
23:30we knew that we'd put the pressure on
23:44and he wants to leave
23:46sit down
23:47you said I was free to leave
23:48sit down
23:49we have opted
23:50to try to
23:51keep him there
23:52in order to get
23:53the search warrant signed
23:54at this point
23:56I won't call an attorney
23:57you can call whoever you want
23:58have a seat
23:59have a seat
24:00you're being detained
24:01you're being detained
24:02in court order
24:03so have a seat
24:04we're
24:05awaiting
24:06the signature
24:07from a judge
24:08on the search warrants
24:09I made the decision
24:10that he needs to stay here
24:11legally
24:12we're able to detain him
24:13for a short period of time
24:15waiting for that search warrant
24:16to get signed
24:17the court orders come
24:18right
24:19just
24:20you said I was free to leave
24:21so then when I say I want to leave
24:22it's you have to stay
24:24at this point in the interview
24:26he's had enough
24:27I believe
24:28he's read between the lines
24:29that we know
24:30far more than what he
24:32believed we knew
24:34we search your house
24:35your person
24:36your clothes
24:37we find no connection
24:39guess what
24:40we move on to the next person
24:42so if I hand over my keys
24:43and my clothes
24:45could I call my parents
24:46and have them come pick me up
24:47definitely
24:48you definitely
24:49you're resting around in your head
24:51it's like
24:52we should just arrest them
24:53put them behind bars
24:55and then it was
24:56do I have enough to arrest them
24:57but with the
24:58investigative team there
24:59it was sorry
25:00we're gonna let them walk
25:01hey
25:02hey
25:03hello
25:04can you come pick me up
25:05from the police department
25:07we just didn't feel
25:08that there was probably
25:09enough to hold him at the time
25:11we watched Jacob Kinn walk out of our police department
25:17not in handcuffs
25:19but a free man
25:21he wasn't ready to confess
25:23and time is not on our side
25:26but we had other officers and agents
25:29investigating his vehicle
25:31and it was evident to them
25:33that he'd been somewhere rural
25:35and we were interested
25:37in where that was
25:39part of the problem
25:40with the data
25:41that we got
25:42from the cell phone
25:43was it landed
25:44out in the middle
25:45of a very rural area
25:47in Big Fork
25:48we took the latitude and longitude coordinates
25:50provided by the
25:51Verizon Telephone Company
25:53we were able to map those coordinates
25:55and it put the cell phone
25:57as to possibly being 5.2 miles
26:00northeast of the cell phone tower
26:02in Big Fork, Minnesota
26:05we were doing a map reconnaissance
26:08of the area
26:09checking to see what other houses
26:11might be in the area
26:12we found a property listed to a relative
26:16Jacob that was right in alignment
26:18with where that phone ping showed up at
26:21we knew we had to go check
26:24grabbed my vehicle, my squad
26:26a pair of boots
26:27got a full tank of gas
26:29and we made the drive to Big Fork
26:42when we got close to the area
26:44up in Big Fork
26:45it was just starting to get light out
26:47we were looking for any spots
26:49where a vehicle might have pulled off
26:51or turned around
26:54it had rained the night before
26:56and as we're driving up
26:57driving up to the intersection of
26:59Township Road 288
27:00which is a dirt road
27:01heading west off of the paved
27:03two lane road that we were driving on
27:05we could see a set of vehicle tracks
27:08to us
27:09it looked like the tire tracks
27:10were very similar to
27:11Jacob Kinn's tracks
27:13on his Jeep
27:14that we had looked at previously
27:16it was exactly what we had traveled the Big Fork to find
27:24we got to the west end of the township road
27:27and saw that the tire tracks had coming out of a field road
27:30that also proceeded west and down a hill
27:33and into a low area
27:35we parked the squad
27:37and proceeded on foot
27:40the grass was about knee high
27:44and we followed the tracks
27:46it was probably at least a half mile walk
27:49I was afraid that we were going to find a little girl's body
27:52somewhere along that trail
27:54as we got up over the rise
27:57on the top of the field
27:58we could see a pickup camper
28:00tucked back into the woods
28:02the tracks pulled right up to the south side of the camper
28:09I walked up to the camper
28:11and the door was tied tight
28:14with a big wad of electrical tape
28:17I was nervous and I opened up the camper door
28:21I didn't know what we were going to find
28:27we got up to the camper
28:52and around the door of the camper
28:54you could see that somebody had placed electrical tape
28:57around the doorknob
28:59to prevent the door from being opened
29:01and Rob looked at me
29:02and I said, Rob, just go ahead and open it
29:07and that's when we found her
29:14Hi, what did you say your name was again?
29:16I'm going to take a little video
29:17How'd you get here?
29:20How'd you get here?
29:21Don was right next to me
29:27Turn on your cell phone, he said
29:29we didn't have body cameras and stuff at the time
29:32Okay, you don't have to be scared, okay?
29:35We're the police
29:36I saw a little girl sitting on a bed
29:39it looked like she had just woke up
29:41sitting there, ten fingers, ten toes
29:46My name's Rob and this is Don
29:48How old are you?
29:50Probably five or something
29:52Finding that little girl alive
29:54I don't know if words can describe it
29:56Is there anybody else around here with you?
29:59Okay
30:00Is it okay if we take a few more pictures?
30:03Okay
30:04We had a text thread going on to share information
30:10Don took a picture of me and little girl
30:13and put it on that text thread
30:166.15am is when I got the call from Don
30:20He said we have her
30:22I said alive, he said alive
30:25What went through your mind at that moment?
30:27That was fantastic
30:29Never would have believed
30:35When I saw that text, it still
30:41Are you thirsty?
30:42Okay
30:43For water
30:45It was amazing
30:47that we
30:49we were able to find her alive
30:52My mommy's name is Amanda
30:54Okay
30:55They had called me and said
30:57we have your daughter
30:58She is safe
31:00She is asking for her mom
31:02I mean I just want to hold her
31:04I want to hug her
31:05I want her in my arms
31:09She told us her name
31:10Her mother's name
31:11We could see that she had tape around her legs
31:14That she had tape around her arms
31:16Do you remember what Missy's friend looked like?
31:19And she told us about the man that put her there
31:21What kind of car does he have?
31:23And it has a name on it
31:25She told us all these little bits of describing information that described Jacob
31:31Ken to us
31:32What does he look like?
31:33He has a beard
31:36I'd received a text from Don Newhouse that says she's alive, arrest him
31:41Jacob William Ken, age 32, was identified as a person of interest
31:46I woke up to a picture of a girl that we had been looking for for now 26, 27 hours
31:53Alive and well in an agent's arms
31:57She's alive, arrest him
32:00And now we're like, where's Jacob right now?
32:03We need to find him and put cuffs on him
32:06Police found Jacob Ken driving his dad's pickup
32:19Traveling back to where he had held her captive
32:24They captured him and interviewed him again at the sheriff's office in Grand Rapids
32:29Our goal was, let's reconfirm his story that he had no connection with Melissa Norby
32:51And have him continue to deny that
32:58All right, Jake
33:00You're under arrest
33:01Okay
33:02I see that
33:04Um, since you are in custody
33:07I will read you the handle warning
33:09Okay
33:10He was very smug in appearance
33:12Um, said very little
33:14And I truly think when Agent Girardi and I walked into that interview room
33:18He had no idea we knew what we knew
33:21Okay, all right
33:23Has anything changed from when we talked last?
33:27No
33:28Other than being confused
33:30Why in arrest being arrested now
33:33And what changed?
33:35He was, why am I under arrest?
33:37What changed from a couple hours ago?
33:39So I just tried to settle him down
33:41And let's, uh, move on from there
33:43Last night when we talked
33:45He said you had no contact with Melissa Norby
33:51Is that true?
33:52No
33:53And you had no contact with the little girl
33:57Having Kin retell us this, you know, or his denial of him not being around Melissa
34:04Was to head off any type of story that he might try to create or explain his actions
34:08When you're in court
34:11Nothing's changed from last night
34:13Oh
34:14100% sure
34:1795% sure
34:19What's the 5% reason?
34:20Yeah
34:21I'm tired and groggy and you guys kept me up all night
34:25But you didn't really answer my question
34:28What was your question?
34:29What changed between two hours ago and now late?
34:32I had the photo that, uh, Don and Rob had sent me
34:37And, uh, I just, uh, I'm just gonna let him know he's caught
34:43Is that the 5% that you're talking about that you're not sure of?
34:58That was a moment I won't forget
35:00You could have heard a pin drop
35:02When, when Agent Girardi, uh, pulled his phone out and, and brought up that picture
35:07I'll remember this forever
35:08He stared at that phone and looked at that photo
35:11You can see him writhe in the chair a little bit
35:14And, and he knew at that moment that, that, that we had him
35:17They put that piece of evidence in front of him and he shut down
35:20That was really something to see
35:25Now, let's start over
35:28Now, now's the time Jake
35:30Okay, we, we know more than you think we do right now
35:35And, and now's the time for you to fill in those blanks
35:39Now's the time for you to come clean and tell us what really happened here
35:44And what's really gone on
35:46Take us through the knife
35:48I try to play on his emotions, tell us where you're at, tell us what's happened
35:50Let us fill in those gaps
35:51Start talking to, what's your name here
35:59Each two months ago
36:01Okay
36:02We actually hadn't had a sexual relationship where we, you know, role-played on the phone
36:09Role-played in, what was her role?
36:12It was daddy-daughter, um, that kind of stuff
36:16That kind of stuff
36:17Okay
36:19Um
36:25You know, I went over there the other night
36:29What, what night?
36:33Today's Thursday
36:34Did she get over here?
36:35Do you go there?
36:44Did she go there for her or for Melissa?
36:49It was for Melissa, but it was...
36:53Did you know that she was gonna be there?
36:54He's actually smart enough to just say,
37:19I want to talk to an attorney.
37:20However, we had enough evidence that we knew
37:23what had happened anyway.
37:31As investigators got through Jacob Kinn's phone
37:35and Melissa Norby's phone, there was information
37:40that they had planned this together,
37:44that Jacob would have a relationship with her
37:47if she gave him access to a child.
37:53The plot thickened again.
37:54It was like, how many times can this case have a twist
37:57and turn like that?
37:59Melissa being involved to the extent that she was,
38:03it was a shock to everyone.
38:15After the initial investigation and the arrest,
38:17when we found a string of text messages that showed
38:21that this whole abduction was planned out, orchestrated,
38:27and discussed amongst Melissa and Jacob,
38:31they couldn't believe it.
38:36It really felt like we were in some movie.
38:40The plot just changed on us.
38:45It was very shocking.
38:47Authorities later learned that Norby had been working
38:49with this man, Jacob Kinn.
38:51He had previously been arrested for child pornography
38:54and soon became the number one suspect.
38:56Melissa had communicated to Jacob Kinn that they did do a staged abduction,
39:00that he would have to hurt her to make it look like she was assaulted,
39:04so that the police would believe that she was a victim as well,
39:06and that a stranger had abducted this girl.
39:10Obviously, Melissa didn't consent to her death.
39:12He put that twist in there on his own.
39:15Jacob Kinn wanted the little girl for himself,
39:18and his avenue to do that was through Melissa Nordby.
39:22It was just another chapter in Jacob Kinn's sick mind.
39:28This mother trusted her with her child,
39:31and she took total advantage of that and betrayed it
39:34because she wanted to have a relationship with someone
39:36who obviously did not value her.
39:39It just didn't make sense to me.
39:41The Melissa that I knew was loving, caring, protective,
39:45and then you find out that she actually helped plan this,
39:49and I just don't get how a mother can do that.
39:57As a police officer, I see victims of domestic abuse.
40:02Victims are manipulated in a way that preys on their self-worth.
40:06He made her feel so inadequate
40:09that she allowed him to abuse her family friend.
40:14She went to some pretty disgusting lengths
40:17to feel loved by somebody.
40:19He should be in prison for the rest of his life.
40:23As far as I'm concerned,
40:38I don't know if Jacob Kinn could be sentenced for long enough,
40:41but that plea deal kept the little girl
40:46from having to get up on the stand and testify
40:48and relive what happened.
40:52Today, my daughter, she's thriving.
40:55She's stubborn.
40:56She's pushy and bossy.
40:58She is a normal 11-year-old child.
41:01See, she's trying to get out of my head.
41:03Where'd she go?
41:03She's over here.
41:04She is amazing.
41:07Definitely my strength.
41:10This case is a career case for me.
41:13It's had a big impact in my life.
41:16This interview, looking back at it now,
41:20I realize how important it was.
41:22You see that link right there?
41:24Jacob was hard to interview
41:27because it was hard to play to his emotions.
41:30I wasn't there.
41:31I didn't do anything to her, and I hadn't seen her.
41:33He controlled the interview so much
41:35with his defensive responses to our questions,
41:38yet the longer he talked...
41:40Yeah, I wasn't in before.
41:42...the closer we got to recovering her.
41:45Every word out of his mouth was a piece of evidence.
41:49I had no reason to be in before.
41:52The fact that we were able to recover her alive is nothing but amazing.
41:59This, I think, will forever be the number one case that I've ever worked on
42:04just because we were able to bring her home, you know?
42:08We got her back.
42:14Today, if you go out to Big Fork, Minnesota, where we processed the camper scene,
42:19you can still see the camper tucked back into the woods.
42:24Pretty disturbing.
42:25To look at the vastness of the area in and around Big Fork and to find this little camper,
42:32it was basically a needle in a haystack.
42:35Just never would have believed.
42:38We go into law enforcement to help people and to put bad people away.
42:42To be able to do both in the same day, it was a really good feeling.
42:48There was no apology from Ken in court.
42:50The judge sentencing him to 52 years in prison.
42:54Everybody that helped bring her home, thank you so much.
42:57You guys are my heroes.
42:59If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have her today.
