00:00A bride-to-be murdered a week before her wedding.
00:12We're going to find out what happened.
00:15Somebody wanted her dead.
00:17Who did it? Who the hell did it?
00:19If you had any suspicions, would you tell us?
00:22Yeah, because if y'all find out I knew, I'm f***ed.
00:26Can detectives get a confession?
00:28Or will a cold-blooded killer go free?
00:32Don't lie for him. I'm not lying for him.
00:35We just needed really that one person to finally break.
00:40Investigators searching for answers.
00:43There are problems!
00:45In the interrogation room.
00:47This is probably the most important moment of your life.
00:58Every suspect accused of a crime has the right to remain silent.
01:04Many agree to be interrogated anyway.
01:06But they can stop the interview at any moment.
01:10Making it a race against time.
01:13Justice hangs in the balance.
01:16We're out at 9-1-1-1, so there's just an emergency.
01:28Yeah, uh, we, um...
01:30Anybody answer?
01:31I just shot off and I...
01:33Went to the kitchen and I saw...
01:36She ran on the kitchen's door.
01:39Okay.
01:39She's not moving?
01:44Not that I saw.
01:45Okay.
01:45What is your name?
01:47My name's Brian.
01:49Hold on, just a minute.
01:50Let me get just some help going, okay?
01:51When we arrived on scene, the fire department advised on the radio that they had gone in and backed out
02:05because they had found a bullet, uh, casing, uh, next to the body.
02:11Uh, uh, room to the head.
02:13Don't get dropped to the body.
02:15God.
02:18There are patterns!
02:19Just stay on me, Drew.
02:23Clear.
02:27Clear.
02:30Got blood in the kitchen.
02:32Blood down this hall.
02:34We've got one down, showcasing on the floor.
02:39Her spam right there next to her.
02:41I'm wondering if she just got here.
02:47She was shot.
02:47One time in the eyebrow, and she died right there.
02:52Now to our other breaking news in Rowlet, where police are trying to figure out what led to a woman's death inside her home.
03:00Right now, police only calling it a death investigation and could not go into many details surrounding the nature of the death or who it is.
03:08As we were in the process of the death penalty, we were able to determine the death penalty.
03:09As we were in the process of obtaining a search warrant, we were able to determine that it was Laura Grillo that was deceased on the floor in the kitchen.
03:19And Laura Grillo was 37 years old.
03:28She was very active in her community.
03:32She was like this ray of sunshine.
03:35She wanted to just make the world a better place.
03:39She was going to get married in a week.
03:44Laura and John were together about seven years total.
03:48Together, they have one child, four years old.
03:51And Laura has two older children from previous relationships.
03:56And they live together with Laura Grillo's brother, Brian.
04:01John had asked Laura to marry him on more than one occasion.
04:07She finally said yes.
04:09She really was excited about the wedding.
04:12And she asked me to be the maid of honor.
04:15We were having a good time planning.
04:17We went and picked out dresses together.
04:21Laura's youngest daughter was with us during a lot of this planning.
04:25You know, it was really sweet.
04:27She was so in love with her.
04:29I'm really sad.
04:31We were supposed to grow old together, you know,
04:33and be best friends.
04:43JOHN AND LAURA WERE BOTH VOLUNTEERS WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT IN A PROGRAM CALLED VIPS,
04:49WHICH IS VOLUNTEERS IN PUBLIC SAFETY.
04:51JOHN ENGAGED IN A CONVERSATION WITH ME.
04:54HE'S FROM GREECE, SO HE SPOKE WITH A HEAVY ACCENT.
04:58HE HAD ASKED IF LAURA WAS IN THE HOUSE.
05:02Listen to me.
05:03It looks like a gunshot wound.
05:04That is all I can tell you.
05:05Do you have cameras on the house?
05:06Yes.
05:07Do they record?
05:08They used to.
05:09I don't know if they do.
05:10Okay.
05:23As we were searching the master bedroom,
05:25we observed some drawers flipped over,
05:28and the safe was actually open,
05:31where it looked like possibly a burglary had occurred.
05:34But there were things inside the scene that just didn't look right.
05:38We did not find any forced entry to the residence at all.
05:42And the rest of the home appeared to be untouched.
05:46This did not appear to us to be a random attack.
05:50Somebody wanted her dead.
05:56New information from Rowlett where neighbors are in disbelief.
05:59We just got an update from Rowlett police about 30 minutes ago,
06:03and they tell us the death investigation that's happening just behind us here inside this home
06:07is now considered a homicide.
06:10With no signs of a forced entry,
06:12investigators say on Friday morning either someone followed Laura into her home
06:16or was already inside when she returned home from taking her children to school.
06:21Laura Grillo's brother Brian told us that he was asleep at the house.
06:35He got up about noon and he found the female body face down in the kitchen.
06:42A lot of blood.
06:44He exited the house and called 911.
06:47That was a concern for us initially that a gunshot that goes off inside a house is typically pretty loud.
06:56But he told us that he's hearing impaired.
06:59And we were able to confirm, so Brian was eliminated as a suspect.
07:04We didn't find any motive.
07:05There was nothing but love between Laura and Brian.
07:19I had the children.
07:20They were staying the night with me.
07:22They couldn't go back home, of course.
07:24And then that's when John was at the police station being questioned.
07:54Basically, the goal was to confirm John's whereabouts on the morning of the murder.
08:01When we started the interview, he cried quietly for about 60 seconds.
08:29What would be the motive for someone to come in the house, attack Laura?
08:36No idea.
08:37No idea.
08:39Somebody chose to come in that house.
08:42But why?
08:43That's what we're going to find out.
08:45Did Laura receive any bone news?
08:47No leak.
08:48No, do my noise.
08:49Okay, everything was good.
08:50I understand y'all.
08:51Hey, a lady coming out.
08:52Yes.
08:53In a week?
08:54In a week?
08:55She was a lot happier because of the love.
08:57She was really exposed to me.
08:58John answered my questions that he didn't owe anybody no money.
09:02Nobody was threatening the family.
09:05They were pending a wedding and he seems to be excited.
09:12He was able to start a detailed written statement.
09:15John said that he had left early in the morning and went to a home improvement store in North Dallas and that he had met up with two workers in his construction business.
09:27A lot of times in my past when I investigated something, a tragic event, people are not physically able to actually start writing down.
09:37We have to give them some time, you know, a day or two to collect themselves.
09:42So that struck me a little bit odd.
09:44But my first interview with John, he didn't stand out to be a suspect.
09:49The very next day, John showed up at the police department unannounced wanting to speak with me.
10:04Everybody's asking me what's going on?
10:06Everybody's asking me what's going on.
10:07My answer is I don't know.
10:09I still don't know.
10:10I need you guys to give answers.
10:12I need answers.
10:13OK?
10:14I need to know what is going on.
10:17What is your speculation?
10:19What?
10:20He wanted to be in charge of what was going on and kind of control what information was going to be released to the public.
10:28And we just let John talk to get as much information from him as we possibly could.
10:33I will answer what I can and what I can tell you at this point.
10:38My biggest concern right now is the kids.
10:43How am I going to talk to them now?
10:45My plan was to bring the kids to the house.
10:48After you get it all cleaned up?
10:50Yes, of course.
10:53He doesn't really seem to be too upset about the fact that his fiancee that he was supposed to marry in a week is dead.
11:03He's more concerned about wanting to clean everything up and move on with his life.
11:09And he's not talking about any security measures that he's going to implement after he's returning to the murder scene
11:17with not only his own life but also the kids.
11:24Now to a developing story. Investigators say the death of a 37-year-old Rowlett mother appears to be a homicide.
11:31Lori Grillo was shot and killed inside her own home Friday morning shortly after returning from dropping her children off at school.
11:38She was supposed to be getting ready for her wedding, scheduled one week from tonight.
11:43But instead, friends and family are planning her funeral.
11:47She was a fantastic loving mom, friend, sister.
11:56She had a rough childhood growing up, but she was trying to create this really fantastic life for her kids that she didn't have when she was a kid.
12:06It's a real nightmare not knowing what happened to someone when they're here one day and then they're just, like, murdered the next day.
12:16But Laura's Beyoncé, John, was acting strange from the get-go.
12:21Just a few days after Laura was killed, John asked me, he's like,
12:27I have a feeling that the Rowlett Police Department is going to try to pin this on me and take the kids.
12:34I knew something was wrong.
12:36We were able to gather video surveillance footage from a couple of home improvement stores that John told us he went to that morning in Dallas,
12:58which proved that he was actually there at the time that Laura was killed.
13:02So we knew that he wasn't responsible for this himself, but we couldn't say at that point that he didn't have some involvement in setting this up.
13:11And we were able to confirm that a short time later, he had met up with two workers in his construction business.
13:20Jesus worked with John, and they were best friends. He was going to be part of the wedding party.
13:34Jesus was John's right-hand man, kind of his job foreman, John's go-to person.
13:39James said that he had only been working for the company for three weeks, so he had barely met John.
13:45My goal was to find out, are they a person of interest or a suspect?
14:12And he texted me, don't be late, whatever.
14:18On the way to...
14:20Yeah, God. We were going to meet up at Home Depot.
14:22Which one?
14:23Um, in Dallas.
14:25What happened then?
14:27Just started moving doors.
14:29Okay.
14:30He pulled up and, um...
14:31Pete being...
14:32John.
14:33John?
14:34John showed up and everything.
14:35We started working.
14:36Yeah, okay.
14:37Both Jesus and James were very upfront, very cooperative, very talkative.
14:43The stories matched.
14:45They both said they were together the entire morning, and both James and Jesus denied being in Rowlett that morning, having any knowledge about what happened to Laura, who was responsible for it.
14:55Let me ask you this, I'm gonna ask you something.
14:57All right, yeah, go ahead.
14:59If you had any suspicions, or if you had any personal knowledge that John was responsible for Laura living her life, would you tell us?
15:08Yeah.
15:09Okay.
15:10Because if y'all find out I knew, I'm f***ing up.
15:20I mean, if that's what y'all are wondering, if he could have done it?
15:23I don't see him doing it, he's an a*****.
15:27I don't see it like that.
15:29Right.
15:30You know what I mean?
15:31I mean, since it happened, just like y'all been doing, you know?
15:34Is it the husband?
15:35Is it the brother?
15:36Is it, you know what I'm saying?
15:38Is it true?
15:39Is it Liz?
15:40I've been doing the same thing.
15:41Exactly.
15:42You know, and that's the same thing we do.
15:43And you kind of brought it up, you know, because you said, I don't think he did it.
15:47He's an a*****.
15:48He's an a*****.
15:49I'm an a*****.
15:50That's why we get along.
15:51All right.
15:52Jesus seemed a little too laid back.
15:55You know, just laughing and joking around in the interview room.
15:59Some of that stuff didn't really make sense when his boss's fiancee, who he had also known
16:05for several years, was just killed.
16:08He kind of felt like he was making a very good effort to deflect any attention from himself.
16:29We found some things that were suspicious to us.
16:35Rowlett is about 30 minutes east of Dallas.
16:38Jesus told us in his initial interview that he stayed in Dallas the entire morning.
16:43Laura was killed.
16:44And his phone records showed otherwise.
16:47And what we found is about 8.26, he pinged a tower in Rowlett.
16:54And the time that his phone hit a cell tower in Rowlett, about a mile from Laura's house,
17:00was right about the time that we believed that Laura was killed.
17:03That was a big problem for him.
17:06There was a lot more to this that he wasn't telling us.
17:10We needed to figure out exactly what did happen.
17:13A lot of the people that we talked to described John as a very controlling person.
17:38He didn't treat Laura very well in public.
17:41He was mean.
17:42He yelled.
17:44He had a terrible temper.
17:46He was possessive.
17:48It was a little surprising when she accepted his proposal.
17:54There were actually several times when Laura was thinking about leaving John.
18:00The last time I spoke with Laura was the night before she was murdered.
18:06She said there was just a big fight that happened regarding the wedding dress.
18:11There was definitely turmoil.
18:13We found out that John wanted out of the relationship with Laura.
18:17But he also was trying to maintain possession of his daughter.
18:21We know that James and Jesus were together that morning prior to them meeting up with his daughter.
18:28We wanted to talk to James again to let James know that we knew Jesus was lying to us.
18:35We wanted to talk to James again to let James know that we knew Jesus was lying to us.
18:44I've listened to the interviews of everybody that's involved with this case.
18:49And there's some things that just don't add up.
18:50I hope I can repeat as much as I can.
18:51I hope so too.
18:52I hope so too.
18:53And the first point I want to figure out is you said this twice that you, that Manuel went to your house.
18:58About 830, 845.
18:59But I've got information that puts Manuel somewhere else.
19:03Just be honest.
19:04That time frame.
19:05Not at your place.
19:06Not at your place.
19:07Not at your place.
19:08Not at your place.
19:09Not at your place.
19:10I've listened to the interviews of everybody that's involved with this case.
19:11And there's some things that just don't add up.
19:12I hope I can repeat as much as I can.
19:13I hope so too.
19:14And the first point I want to figure out is you said this twice that you, that Manuel went
19:21to your house.
19:22About 830, 845.
19:24But I've got information that puts Manuel somewhere else.
19:28Just be honest.
19:31That time frame.
19:32Not at your place.
19:33He was at my place.
19:34I have proof that he was not at your place that early.
19:37That's what time he was at my place.
19:40I'm telling you, I've analyzed everything.
19:43He was not there.
19:44In any interview, we've got to get that person to understand that we do know more than what
19:52we're leading on.
19:53And we explained what the penalties are for, you know, murdering.
19:56He could spend the rest of his life in prison.
19:59I think the thought of that scared him.
20:01You've known him for 15 years, and this is what I want.
20:04Sometimes, our friends will put us in a difficult situation.
20:08Don't lie for him.
20:09I'm not lying for him.
20:10You're not.
20:11It's serious business, dude.
20:13I'm not lying for him.
20:14If you know something, even if you suspect something, lay it out.
20:19I was trying to let him know, don't cover for him.
20:24It helps build rapport.
20:26And if you have rapport with somebody, it makes it more difficult for them to lie to you.
20:31If we gave you a polygraph today and I asked you, do you have knowledge or did you participate in the taking of the life of Laura?
20:40Yes or no?
20:41What would you answer?
20:42No.
20:43Knowledge.
20:44No, no, no.
20:45Do you have knowledge of it?
20:46No.
20:47No one has mentioned it to you?
20:49No.
20:50What do you think the testimony showed?
20:52I'm coming to tell you the truth.
20:54Still, even as we confronted him with facts that we knew, he continued to deny, but I classified him as a weak denial.
21:02We knew that he knew something about the murder.
21:24He gave us consent to search.
21:29We did recover a usable amount of marijuana and a backpack that was underneath his bed.
21:36Whose bag is this?
21:37This is?
21:38All his?
21:39I noticed a change in his demeanor when I pulled out the backpack.
21:45I opened it up.
21:47It had latex gloves in there.
21:49It had two brand new phones in there.
21:52It was a little bit odd for me.
21:55So that gave us even more suspicion that now we're on to the right people.
22:04Also happening right now, police are looking for a man who they say is a person of interest in the murder of a Rowlett mother.
22:10Rowlett police say this new person of interest, Jesus Emmanuel Trevino, lied about where he was the day that Laura Grillo was murdered here in her home and that he's now on the run.
22:19He fled the area.
22:21We were not able to locate him and we had some concern that James may do the same.
22:25We decided to go ahead and charge him with that marijuana.
22:28That's the reason why James ended up back in jail.
22:31Texas Rangers are the state police here in Texas that are very helpful in assisting smaller agencies to investigate crimes available.
22:37of this nature.
23:02James seemed to be very intrigued by the Texas Rangers.
23:15He seemed to be impressed.
23:26I'm not interested in games at this point.
23:28We're way too far into this,
23:30and this is not something that you're going to get in the middle of
23:33by trying to cover for anybody.
23:42I've been trying to go over it more and more
23:45in case y'all come to talk to me
23:47because I want to help out as much as I can.
23:50James knew that it was a very serious situation,
23:52but we just couldn't get James to tell us
23:56what he knew at that point.
24:00They still haven't released it, James.
24:10No, I mean, no, I hope not.
24:15He was with me that whole time.
24:16They were clearly concerned about James being at the police department
24:34for so many hours and what he was telling us.
24:37We needed to determine if there was anything that John was willing to provide us
24:50that would explain why he would be having a conversation with Jesus
25:06about what James was going to say.
25:08He was surprised to see us approaching at the home improvement parking lot.
25:13He seemed very nervous.
25:15You got this a second?
25:17I wanted to show you something.
25:18We got something that came up in the case.
25:20Going in my lawyer?
25:23If he was not involved, that was an opportunity for him to say
25:29and explain that he was not involved in the murder of his fiancee.
25:35Listen to it, listen to it.
26:03You said hopefully he didn't tell them how.
26:11What do you mean?
26:12In other words, us, the police.
26:14Because we were interviewing James.
26:16OK.
26:17And you said, I hope he doesn't tell them how.
26:20And Jesus said, I know, because I was with him.
26:23In other words, James was with me.
26:25No, I don't remember, man.
26:27No, that's the recording right there.
26:29That's you talking to Jesus.
26:31OK.
26:32That means you know how Laura was killed.
26:34No, sir.
26:35I do not know how Laura was killed.
26:36OK.
26:37And why would you say that?
26:38I don't remember how and why I had this conversation with him.
26:44He seemed very nervous.
26:46And he couldn't explain it.
26:48He could not explain the recorded conversation.
26:51If you look at everything that we have found out during this investigation,
26:56and I'm just being honest with you, OK,
26:58it's pointing right back to you and Jesus and James.
27:01I don't know, guys.
27:02I know, but you see how it looks?
27:05I really have no idea.
27:07I mean, I don't know what to tell you.
27:09Technically, I don't think that I should be talking to you guys right now,
27:13because my lawyer told me, you know,
27:15if the police wants to talk to you, I need to be present.
27:18You're free to go.
27:19We're not detaining you.
27:21We're not hacked up in you.
27:23We just have some questions.
27:25We were able to get in contact with a couple of his ex-girlfriends,
27:45a former roommate of his.
27:48And these people had direct knowledge about Jesus being hired by John
27:54to kill Laura.
27:57Two of these people gave us information
27:59that Jesus personally came to them
28:01and offered them money to drive him out to Rowlett
28:04so that he could commit this murder.
28:08Both of those people didn't want anything to do with his plan.
28:12So at this point in the investigation,
28:14our theory was that James was most likely the driver,
28:18and we felt that John paid Jesus to kill Laura.
28:23Also, we were able to get a tip that Jesus was in Florida,
28:29and we provided that information
28:31to the United States Marshal Service.
28:34All new at 10 o'clock, handcuffed in Florida.
28:36Take a good look at the photo.
28:37This is on a warrant out of Rowlett,
28:39U.S. Marshals arresting Jesus Trevino.
28:42Jesus had been arrested, but we still did not have proof
28:59that John was an active role co-defendant in the murder of Laura Grillo.
29:05We just needed really that one person to finally break
29:11and just confirm everything that the investigation
29:14had showed up to that point.
29:16Jesus had a felony criminal history.
29:18He has multiple arrests.
29:20He has a lot of knowledge of dealing with police.
29:22And James didn't have as close of a relationship with John
29:27that Jesus did.
29:28So we felt that James would be the weaker person
29:31in that type of a situation to cooperate with us
29:34and tell us what he knew about how Laura was killed.
29:38James seemed to be very intrigued by the text
29:43of the story.
30:05James seemed to be very intrigued by the text
30:08of the Texas Rangers.
30:09He really seemed to like dealing with the Rangers,
30:12like talking to the Rangers.
30:13Well, I know that he dealt with some guys,
30:15but I'm a little bit different than them
30:17because really all I do is homicides.
30:19My conviction rate, my solvency rate, 100%.
30:26You actually remind me of the legend of the Texas Rangers
30:29that I heard about, the old Wild West days.
30:31Yeah, yeah.
30:32They'll send all these marshals and sheriffs in there
30:35and it took one Texas Ranger to go through.
30:37One Wyatt wrote one Ranger, right?
30:39OK.
30:40Texas Rangers, they're a legend here in Texas.
30:43I think it made an influence on James
30:46in order to give more of the truth.
30:48You know this young lady?
30:49Guess who she dated?
30:50Jesus.
30:51Would it surprise you to know that this young lady told us
30:53that Jesus talked to her about how he was going to get paid
30:55to commit a murder?
30:56He was going to kill his boss's wife near this joker.
31:03He approaches him and offers him some money to drive a car so he can do what?
31:11Kill his boss's wife so you think those two stories are legitimate.
31:18I mean that's a lot to make up.
31:20He understands that now we know a little bit more than we did the last time we sat down.
31:27You see? His arms are open. He's pretty relaxed. And that's a good posture to move in to draw in more of the truth.
31:46You don't have to get caught up in this deal. Why should you be worried? Because capital murder is an all-inclusive offense. It doesn't matter who pulled the trigger. Right? Don't be part of it. Lay it out. Separate yourself. The only way that you can do that is be honest.
32:15You just want to go home. There's an opportunity for that. The only way I think that you can stay out of this thing is to help yourself out.
32:27It's your decision. This is probably the most important moment of your life.
32:33You have to get involved. You have to get involved in your life again.
32:45You can't do anything. You can't do anything. There's nothing anyone can do for you.
32:51I don't think this is your fault, I don't even think that you necessarily knew why you
33:17were driving him there.
33:18Did you know why you were driving him there?
33:21I don't think, I know the answer, you're not a killer, you're not a guy who plans murders,
33:32and you're not a bad person.
33:35But good people say that they're sorry for the mistakes that they made, they make amends.
33:42If you recognize the person, not just for the event of the criminal act, but for other
33:48things in their life, they feel that they've got some type of connection with you, that
33:53you're not judging them on one criminal act.
33:55In some witnesses, it can give them the comfort that they need in order for them to provide
34:01truthful information.
34:02You're on the edge of the Grand Canyon, right?
34:11And what I'm going to ask you to do is take a leap of faith.
34:14You're going to trust me.
34:15You're my friend, right?
34:16I'm trying to be your friend.
34:17I'm the best friend you have in the whole freaking world.
34:18I'm trying to get you a pen and paper.
34:19So how does it kick off?
34:20When I first mentioned anything about this, I disregarded it.
34:23I thought he was just about stuck.
34:25He shows up in the morning, and we get a car and we go.
34:29The whole time, I'm like, I'm still thinking he's bull****.
34:35Even when he gets there.
34:36He does his thing.
34:37I heard nothing.
34:38And when he gets back in the car, what does he say to you?
34:40That's all.
34:41That's what I said.
34:42The whole time, I'm like, I'm still thinking he's
34:49even when he gets there.
34:52Mm-hmm.
34:53Every time he does his thing, I heard nothing.
34:57Mm-hmm.
34:58And when he gets back in the car, what does he say to you?
35:03That's him.
35:04That's what he said.
35:05Yeah, he shot her.
35:06Did he say how he did it, or?
35:08He just shot her in the head.
35:11Right.
35:22But it's pretty obvious that John ordered it.
35:25Yeah.
35:26Did you ever say how much John paid him for it?
35:31He was boasting about something about 15 grand.
35:37Were they threatening you at all, or just shut up,
35:40or the same man?
35:41Don't talk or else.
35:43I got that right from Jesus.
35:45What's he do with you?
35:47He got rid of it.
35:48Where?
35:51At the gas station on the street.
35:53Put me some cuff, and let's get in the car,
35:55and I'll take you.
35:56I don't know the street, but I can take you that way.
35:59James did agree to get in the car and actually show us the route that he and Jesus drove from Dallas to Rowlett that morning.
36:18And James was able to show us several places that evidence was discarded.
36:31OK.
36:32What was it?
36:33In a container or something?
36:36It was in what?
36:37Black trash bag.
36:38Once James finally did decide to tell us what he knew, we were able to take John into custody as well.
37:01We entered through a garage where he was doing some work.
37:07He was taken to the ground and handcuffed.
37:10During the arrest, his glasses fell off.
37:13And the only thing he said is, can I get my glasses?
37:16And he never said a word.
37:19He never spoke.
37:21We were instructed to drive him to the Dallas Sheriff's office and turn him over to Ranger Holland.
37:27Hey, come on in.
37:29Have a seat.
37:33This was a well-planned murder, and we needed to close this case.
37:38We needed John to confess.
37:48I'm guessing you really have about 50,000 questions right now if you're wondering what's going on.
37:53Would I be right with that?
37:55There's a couple of problems.
38:09What do you mean?
38:10There's a couple of problems.
38:12Let me explain them to you.
38:14So, you know James Beleta, right?
38:18Nothing he hears, yes.
38:20OK.
38:21And you know Mr. Trevenio there, right?
38:23Yes.
38:24With him, I know him several years.
38:26Let me cut to the chase a little bit.
38:28Jesus is a dumbass.
38:30Alright?
38:31At the end of the day, you shouldn't hire a dumbass to do a job.
38:35Because he's going to screw it up.
38:36Alright?
38:37And if he doesn't screw it up, he's going to talk about it.
38:39I didn't hire the dumbass.
38:40That's my problem.
38:42Do what?
38:43I did not hire the dumbass.
38:44Come on.
38:45I did not pay him any money.
38:46That's...
38:47That's my problem.
38:48I did not want Lota killed.
38:51I tried to get married with her for at least three years.
38:54Mm-hmm.
38:55I loved her.
38:56I still love her.
38:57There's not a question of if you did this or you didn't do that.
39:00I already know the answer to it.
39:01I already know that you hired him.
39:03You know this chick?
39:05She said that Jesus told her that you were going to pay Jesus $9,000 for killing your wife
39:13because you didn't want to get married and you wanted custody of the children.
39:22And at this point, you're looking at a long time in prison or the death penalty.
39:28But this country is very interesting in that if people show remorse and they tell the truth,
39:34things tend to go bad for them.
39:42Say this.
39:45I'm sorry.
39:46Oh, I am sorry that my wife was killed.
39:50I cry so many times.
39:54I mean, you're telling me that, you know, you're telling me that basically admitting that I hired him to do the murder.
40:04That's what you're telling me.
40:05Am I telling you to admit that?
40:07No, I already know that you did that.
40:08I'm giving you an opportunity to tell the truth.
40:11I need to talk to the attorney.
40:14You're telling me.
40:15I'm telling you.
40:16I'm
40:27look in aoki name here, you think.
40:28When Ranger Holland interviewed James, he was able to get his cooperation to the point that James agreed to testify against the other two defendants, which was very positive for our investigation.
40:43for our investigation.
40:49James says he drove Jesus to Rowlett to Laura Grillo's house.
40:55Jesus entered the house.
40:58He shot her to death.
41:01And then they drove to the home improvement store
41:05in North Dallas and met up with John.
41:08And that John wanted Jesus to kill Laura before the wedding.
41:16That wedding wasn't going to happen.
41:20It was all to cover up.
41:22There's a darkness to it.
41:26Both John and Jesus were sentenced to life in prison
41:31without the possibility of parole.
41:34And because James did decide to cooperate
41:37in this investigation, he was allowed
41:39to plead guilty to a murder charge instead of capital murder.
41:43And he was sentenced to 25 years.
41:47I was glad we were able to hold the individuals responsible,
41:50you know, accountable for what they did.
41:56They took a lot away from a lot of people.
42:00And they took a mother, a friend, a daughter.
42:04I'm just really glad that this case got solved
42:07and that they worked so hard for her.
42:08Because anybody's worth it.
42:11But, you know, Laura was worth it.
42:14They had been planning this murder for months.
42:17And they believed that they had a plan that was going to work.
42:22Luckily, in this case, we got justice for Laura Grillo.
42:26She's awesome, and she's strong, and she's like her mom.
42:43And Laura's always going to have a place in her heart.
42:47She's resilient.
42:50I'm really blessed to have her.
42:53Laura still lives on.
42:54She lives on through her daughter's smile
42:57and through me trying to be a better person every day
43:01because of her.
