00:00welcome to another episode of five aside on being sports and we are fresh off the 69th
00:22ballon d'or ceremony where usman dan bailey won the awards let's clap it up for our newest
00:27fall floor winner fresh off of a treble with paris saint-chaumain winning them their first ever
00:34champions league trophy do we feel this was a deserved winner of the award everybody wants to
00:40say i mean we all said it yep before a week ago today we all said it deserves to be in that ballet
00:46treble winner over 40 goals and assists did everything he needed to do yeah it's well
00:53deserved not to even mention the impact he had pressing as an attacker yeah so yeah i think was
00:59in total 51 ga but the impact he had in causing those turnovers and just making the other team
01:04that much more uncomfortable on top of all the stats that's the type of stuff that shows his work rate
01:08and part of the reason they were able to be so successful as a team which is what was very
01:12unique about paris this season so yeah just congrats to him beautiful moment with uh his mother being
01:17there him getting emotional brought to tears his boys from the neighboring city of paris so it is
01:21very inspiring to see and very happy for a deserved winner i would say bringing in the overall top 10
01:26for the award of course we had first place usman dembele second place laminya mao third vitinia
01:31fourth muhammad sala fifth rafinha six ashraf hakimi seventh killing mbappe eighth cole palmer very
01:38debatable and ninth gianluigi donnarumma and tenth nuno minch any thoughts on the top 10 anybody who
01:43maybe should have been there or should not be in the top 10 uh rafinha at five was not something i was
01:50expecting i agree um honestly the talent of that top five is great but you can't knock the the
01:57trophies you can't knock the goals and assists just how they kind of did to get there um it's yeah i
02:03think everyone that's probably the most shocking part of those ratings is that rafinha was so low
02:06everyone kind of thought he was one of the finalists to win it so there's a lot of kind of outcry from
02:11the public and understanding of what that trophy really what is it what does it take to win the
02:15ballon door yeah i i would say too pedri 11 but cole palmer 8 we might need to flip those just a
02:20little bit in my opinion probably for sure i think for me rafinha was probably the biggest shock yeah
02:26yeah yeah um and i think like there's a lot of parallels and just the story between even him and
02:30dembele not necessarily not necessarily like where they come from but just the trials that they've
02:34overcome the transfer to different clubs and just where they were at at certain points in his career
02:39like his acceleration his expedited acceleration is has been crazy so i think he got kind of snubbed
02:46not being in the top three but then salah too uh top goal scorer of the year premier league player of
02:52the year won the league became the highest uh foreign goal scorer in the premier league history just
02:58uh surpassing sergio aguero goal contribution record bro goal contribution record he could have been second
03:05yeah i think like i still think dembele deserved it but i think he should have been second 100 and i
03:10think that kind of takes us into the discussion of is the ballon door still the world's most premier
03:16trophy in football and kind of the behind the scenes of what affects the voting that we just mentioned
03:20um because as it it excuse me as it is being voted on by journalists a lot of things that get taken
03:26into it is the narratives when you think about muhammad salah the egyptian you just spoke of
03:30they wrapped up the title race very early so the second half of the season which is most recently
03:35in mind for the voters was not as exciting for liverpool despite his goals and assists the
03:39title is already wrapped up if they had won the title in a super tight race maybe last day of the
03:44season he scores last minute penalty and they beat out arsenal that changes the narrative then maybe he
03:49could have won it so i think that's very interesting um concept to think about but y'all thoughts on the
03:53award overall and has it lost some of its shine or do you think it's still yeah at the peak of football
03:57it's a very competitive award to win which is why obviously the top rankings are very tight
04:02um but no i definitely would say that it still has you know its value its prestige you see the emotion
04:07that denbele had when he won that you know there's no award that even touches the ballon d'or
04:11yep um obviously the voting process is something that you know is often talked about and shine light
04:16on but what else can compete with the ballon d'or you know they used to be you know the fifa
04:21one player of the year exactly they were together at one point i think too yeah yeah like it was a
04:26collaborative team and they were separate at points because vinnie just won fifa the best but not the
04:31ballon d'or um i will say one thing that's really cool about the ballon d'or now you know the freaks
04:36of ronaldo and messi have let go yeah the era of terror is over the era of terror of those it's exciting
04:42you don't know who's gonna win it now you know having a ballon d'or could be one you know two years
04:47instead of some freaks trying to hold it every single year yeah yeah i think even i don't know even the
04:52fact that lamine was second and he was so close to winning it i think is a testament to like i don't
04:58know just like the journalistic element of it where it's like people appreciate like other than just the
05:03stats like the age like how he is doing all the things that he's doing the poise that he's had
05:09doing it um i do i do think that there's something to be said about the like storytelling and the
05:15generalistic like perspective on like who's the best player that i do appreciate about the award even
05:20though like some people are like no it should just be most goals assist you're the best player
05:25i appreciate that there's a little bit of like personal and even maybe like eye test that's like
05:30kind of incorporated into the award but with that it goes into like how is pedry 11 if we're doing eye
05:35tests and not just talking about stats you know what i mean and then how do you objectively decide
05:40what's a better story because that's yeah you can't active you know like this guy was injured a lot
05:44rafina just hit his prime but he's 18 like what's a better story you know i think that's the beauty
05:49about it it's like the ballon door and like an award like that like the best player it's never
05:53gonna it can never be objective of course so it's like exactly yeah the beauty about it is like yo
05:57the debates 100 people got together and said it was you bro dembele is a player that this generation
06:02of fans have grown up with and they've seen his career from dortmund to to barcelona to now psg
06:07and it's full circle and i think the ripple effect it will have on you know french youth and you
06:13know how they approach football seeing how france unified to support try to just reach for him
06:18holding that ballon door it's a beautiful thing to say coach of the year was luis enrique who's
06:22been through a lot in life of course losing his daughter just a few years ago and just had to
06:26fight through a lot of personal struggles on top of what he's dealt with as a coach but to be able
06:30to bring paris their first ever champions league the treble help coach up these guys like in the
06:35belly to learn how to press and have that level of intensity on the defensive end well deserved award
06:39as well so just want to make sure he got his shout out speaking of great coaches we have
06:43jose morinho returning to portugal this time to coach benfica where he started his career in the
06:49year 2000 he's back in liga portugal not with porto though so there is a little bit of that
06:54interesting rivalry because porto of course is where he made a name for himself on the 2004
06:58champions league which was such an iconic moment not just for that club but for that country but he's
07:03going actually to benfica where he was before that so thoughts on this transfer there's a little bit
07:09of a debate right now is this actually the right move or is it just a little bit of nostalgia so
07:12curious your thoughts on marino back in portugal it's interesting because for marino that's back
07:17where he started coaching honestly back in 2000 you know um and there's a quote from him as well
07:22he said i'm honest i always thought i'll be back to portugal but i always thought i'll come back to
07:27the national team you know um and he said that he thinks it's a natural consequence of his career it
07:32happened to be benfica a giant club and i don't say it's a giant club because i am in benfica
07:38you know what i mean and so he was just trying to say that you know there's a lot of history with
07:42the club even from the social perspective of it yeah you know um he's a representative of portuguese
07:46football and culture so so why not do it 100 y'all thoughts is it symbolic is this the right move
07:53long-term short-term effects for benfica he did just lose out in the champions league with fenerbahce
07:57then got this job so he lost he lost out in the champions league with fenerbahce but he won the
08:01conference league a few years ago with roma um 26 european trophies in general obviously one of the
08:07most storied and the accomplice managers ever i'm curious to see how you know because benfica again
08:12huge club but their reign on the league has kind of loosened fresh off that loss too the caribbean
08:17yep fresh off that loss uh in the champions league uh they're now going to play porto on october 5th so
08:23a lot of storylines going into that game yeah but it's interesting to see how he'll oppose his kind
08:27of style of play and his you know charisma but yeah he if there's anyone who can bring benfica back
08:33it's him but you know it can go either way it's either going to be great it's going to be bad that's
08:37the kind of thing you get with marina 100 yeah and just a lot more exciting for liga portugal so
08:41bringing it back to liga on though we have ansu fati who is in blistering form which is amazing to
08:47see for a guy that struggled through a lot of injuries and we're talking about laminya maul and
08:51how good he is at 18 well ansu fati was the star boy before him at barcelona yeah if y'all remember
08:56what he was doing as a teenager scoring his champions league debut back two more goals this weekend
09:00what is it what do you guys think it means to see ansu fati back and balling and scoring like this
09:04it's a great moment to see it coincides with another star boy who took some time to get to
09:10the ballon door you know what i'm saying yeah so it's it's it's one of those things that's
09:15encouraging you hope you can continue to stay healthy because you know healthy ansu fati is the
09:19truth the interesting thing to me will be to see how just like the impact of him being there with
09:25pogba will be yeah obviously pogba being like arguably like a living legend in the game um and
09:32somebody that has also just dealt with a lot of adversity throughout his entire career whether
09:35that be injuries or the press yep um so it'll be interesting to see if he can kind of just be like
09:40a good influence and kind of like them kind of grow and come back together you know what i'm saying
09:47um so yeah i'm excited to see what happens with that partnership for sure we've spoken about turkey
09:51we've spoken about portugal i want to ask you guys which league would you rather play in
09:56considering fan atmosphere weather food competition in the league even wages which one would y'all go
10:03with it'll be portugal bro yeah i got to i'm with you i'm with you you know i'm spanish too i'm with
10:07you not fair you know what i mean there's a lot of good football and culture there a lot of history
10:11of ballers who come through the ranks yep you know one of my personal favorites growing up um when i was
10:16younger was crash one you know what i mean different different sauce playstation tricks on the pitch
10:21yeah so sporting lisbon will have to see me yeah i'm with you on that bro what about you i'm gonna
10:26have to take turkey actually i think the passion is different it's just yeah as as you know young
10:32african watching you know the heritage that's gone through that league drugba it's if you can if you
10:38can you know test the metal and like you can kind of you know rise up to the level that they the fans
10:43hold you to you're a living legend in turkey and they'll never forget you as long as you live
10:47and i think that you know the appeal like how intense it is and how integrated football and
10:52culture is to all different aspects of culture there in life i think that would be super interesting
10:58obviously i'm not a pro footballer so i wouldn't know what it took to get there but yeah of course
11:01i'd love to see what that would be like uh for me it's easily turkey i'm a foodie
11:06kebab cheese meze yeah turkish turkish coffee oh heavy baklava yeah i'm in there bro i didn't even
11:14think about baklava it's a coach coach he's thinking about eating
11:16you need boiled chicken broccoli and protein powder buddy and water just eating
11:23coaches come here to eat i gotta go i'm spanish so i gotta go with portugal just seeing the kind
11:28of talent that's come out of there you mentioned koreshma obviously you have cristiano ronaldo and
11:32figo like deco i mean layout the new young boy kenda i don't know if y'all saw the goal he recently
11:39scored unbelievable winger he looked like a new layout out of portugal so and then the weather
11:43too i think is a little bit better in portugal but food wise even though i'm spanish i might be
11:47rocking with you so i'm gonna go with you on that but let us know your thoughts in the comments and
11:52this has been another episode of five aside on being sports we'll see you at the next one
