00:13If you would be traveling on the Orient Express in its golden age, this is the kind of carriage
00:18you would be traveling on. Until its withdrawal, the train tied Europe together. Prince Ferdinand
00:26was quoted in saying that the Orient Express is of vital interest to us.
00:31A service famed for its glamour and luxury.
00:35This space was for the creme de la creme, the best of the best.
00:39That became world famous.
00:42The Cold War made the Orient Express the hotbed of spice.
00:47And whose legacy is still felt.
00:50Let's say 150 years ago you came here with the Orient Express.
00:53You would have seen exactly the same mosque of today.
00:59In this series, we'll take a 2,000 mile journey across Europe.
01:05It's always a very exciting moment when we are doing a route for the first time.
01:11And follow a new luxury train as it retraces the fabled route.
01:16Exploring the history of a golden age of train travel along the way.
01:23In the golden age of rail, a single ticket on the Orient Express network took passengers
01:35from London all the way to Istanbul, the gateway to the east.
01:40In the 1920s, Waggon-Li, the company that ran the Orient Express,
01:45had a luxury train network that stretched across three continents.
01:51At the core of this network were their multiple Orient Express services.
01:56After travelling through France and Germany,
01:59passengers from London would head for the imperial capital of Vienna
02:02before passing through Budapest, Belgrade and Sofia on their way to Istanbul.
02:08On this part of the legendary journey, a shocking attack...
02:14It exploded and the locomotive and four carriages fell down to the abyss.
02:21A close escape...
02:22It was extremely dangerous and Freud, of course,
02:26spent the most horrible hours of his life.
02:29And a rare survivor.
02:30It was a luxurious carriage from top to bottom.
02:40895 metres above sea level,
02:43the Semering Pass is one of the few ways to cross the Alps.
02:47For centuries, people used trackways and roads to cross the mountains.
02:51Then came the railways.
02:53In one of the greatest feats of railway engineering ever,
02:59the Semering Bar was driven through this pass.
03:02It's still a unique highlight for anyone who travels through it,
03:06like passengers on the Golden Eagle Danube Express,
03:09a modern-day luxury train,
03:11on its inaugural run from Paris to Istanbul.
03:14The 41-kilometre-long line took 10,000 people just six years to build by hand.
03:26It traverses 14 viaducts, 129 bridges and 14 tunnels as it crosses the mountains.
03:36The route, the world's first mountain railway, was long thought impossible.
03:41The highlight of the route is the Kalta Rinna viaduct,
03:48a 46-metre-high, double-storey structure that carries the line across the river.
03:56Since 1998, this railway has been a World Heritage Site,
04:00standing alongside the Taj Mahal, Stonehenge and the Great Wall of China.
04:05The Semering Bar is a highlight for seasoned traveller Helen Burnham.
04:12It's a great adventure.
04:14It's a great way to travel.
04:17Look at all this nice scenery here.
04:21But Austria is a beautiful country.
04:24Helen has travelled on luxury trains across the world.
04:27I got hooked on luxury travel by the Royal Scotsman,
04:33a trip which I did in 96, which is a long time ago.
04:38Almost 30 years later, there's just one route left on her bucket list.
04:43Everybody raves about the old Orient Express,
04:48which is sort of an epic journey, Paris to Istanbul.
04:52That was missing on my programme.
04:57But there are benefits to doing the journey on a modern luxury train.
05:02There is a lot of history attached to the Orient Express.
05:07The old Orient Express didn't have private bathrooms.
05:13They never talked about that,
05:16but when they show the old films of the Orient Express,
05:19it's always about the dining.
05:221,400 kilometres after leaving Paris,
05:29the Orient Express approached the halfway point of its journey.
05:33After travelling through Germany and having navigated the Alps,
05:36the train pulled into the imperial capital of Vienna,
05:42one of the most architecturally impressive cities in Europe.
05:46It was rebuilt in the mid-19th century.
05:48It's old city walls were replaced with a sweeping Ringstrasse and grand buildings.
05:56It was also one of Europe's great railway cities.
05:59The city was surrounded by workshops that produced railway locomotives and carriages,
06:07including the first Orient Express carriages.
06:13Orient Express passengers arrived into the city via its west station.
06:17The original grand 19th century station was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in the 1950s.
06:25Its modernist ticket hall remains much as it looked when the station reopened.
06:31Vienna was one of the most popular stops for Orient Express passengers.
06:35Many would leave the train and immediately head to their hotel.
06:38But if you were looking for luxury, you would have headed straight for Vienna's most famous one.
06:45Michael Moser was the head concierge at the Hotel Imperial for over 30 years.
06:51The building itself was not built as a hotel.
06:55It was built as a private palace from a German duke.
06:58He was very rich and married a very rich princess of Austria.
07:02The duke Philip of Württemberg only enjoyed his lavish palace for five years.
07:09They built the Ringstrasse, so much noise, trouble.
07:12And he was so rich, he said, I don't like the place anymore.
07:15I built another palace on the 9th District.
07:19It was empty for two years.
07:21And 1873, Viennese World Exhibition, no hotels.
07:25Some of the water place and changed it within one year into a hotel.
07:30And since 1873, we are a hotel now.
07:35The hotel's grand staircase remains today exactly as it was when this was a royal palace.
07:44It leads to the lavish double-height first floor.
07:48Once, these were royal apartments.
07:50Now, they're the best rooms in Vienna.
07:52So, here we are on the first floor of the palace.
07:57And here where our wealthy guests from the Orient Express stayed when they came to the imperial.
08:04This is a part of our royal suite.
08:07We have two of these, actually.
08:10460 metres squared, with ceilings almost seven metres tall,
08:15the royal suite has a palatial living room
08:17and a separate bedroom with en-suite bathroom and changing rooms.
08:22And just to mention, the two rooms, they have 100-metre curtain.
08:28Because every window has four curtains.
08:31Because if somebody would like to relive in the dark,
08:33we have double curtain on each side.
08:36If we look up, there are still the crowns from the Duke of Württemberg.
08:41This is, the decoration is all absolutely original.
08:45This is, this is really 160 years old, too.
08:49Michael Moser fell in love with the hotel the moment he walked into it for the first time.
08:54I started, actually, in 1983 here.
08:58Second row concierge and my head concierge retired in 86 and then I became head concierge.
09:11We had a lot of charming, very charming guests from the Orient Express.
09:17And if I remember well, they always came on Friday late afternoon.
09:21Then they stayed a little bit in Vienna, one or two days or three.
09:24When I started here, there were not so many luxury hotels in Vienna.
09:28So, more or less, every party, every famous person who was staying in Vienna was staying with us.
09:34The hotel's famous visitors are recorded in its guest books.
09:39Unfortunately, the first guest book from 1873 till 1915 got lost.
09:47But, I show you, this is our guest book.
09:51The oldest we have, they start in 1915.
09:55Some, we cannot read the signature, but a lot of we found.
10:00This is, for example, Charlie Chaplin.
10:02He wrote, Beautiful and Splendid.
10:04Charlie Chaplin, March 1931.
10:07This is Alfred Hitchcock, the famous film designer, film regisseur.
10:16He made his face and then he wrote also his signature.
10:21He stayed actually in this room and in an interview he said,
10:25I was staying at the Hotel Imperial in a very, very large suite.
10:28I lost my wife and half an hour later I found her behind a marble column.
10:33Despite retiring in 2014 from concierge duties,
10:38Michael's love of the hotel keeps him here almost daily.
10:41I mean, actually, I'm proud to be a little a part of the history itself, you know,
10:47because I'm so long here, I'm the longest running man here in the hotel.
10:52I always say people worked very hard 100 years before and made a good job,
10:58otherwise the hotel would be not as famous as it is.
11:15For decades, Orient Express passengers could alight at Vienna,
11:19one of Europe's greatest cities.
11:21It was the heart of the Habsburg Empire and its imperial glory is clear to see.
11:31Once Orient Express passengers had checked into the hotel,
11:34they'd be looking to stretch their legs and blow off a little steam
11:37after such a long journey.
11:40Luckily, Vienna had them covered.
11:43Paul Propp is the fifth generation of his family to work at Prater.
11:47The large public park is one of Vienna's most famous landmarks.
11:53So if you decided to step down from the Orient Express
11:56and visited the Prater 100 years ago,
12:00you will find most of the similarities you will see now
12:03with the Hauptallee and the trees.
12:06And we even have the Lusthaus on the top of our hill here
12:10where all the people back then drank the coffee and ate their schnitzel.
12:16Prater was transformed for the 1873 World's Fair.
12:21Paths were paved, gas streetlights installed
12:24and a brand new amusement park created,
12:27the centerpiece of which was a recreation of Venice,
12:31complete with canals and gondolas.
12:33Venice in Vienna Prater was an amazing entertainment area
12:37where they brought different culture
12:39to a very, very famous attraction park.
12:43My family actually came into the Wiener Prater in the year 1887.
12:49And it's so interesting and so funny
12:51because the people that came from the Orient Express, for example,
12:56they had the experience probably with my grand-grandfather
12:59operating these businesses back in the days.
13:02Two years after Venice in Vienna opened,
13:05a brand new attraction was unveiled.
13:08This is our famous Ferris wheel, built in the year 1897.
13:13And it was built actually for our emperor, Franz Josef I.
13:16It was built by a British engineer, a very brilliant guy,
13:20because in the end he decided to have a different operational system.
13:25Here you can see a wire that is getting pulled in by a mechanical system.
13:31And it is totally different compared to normal Ferris wheels
13:36because they use tires to operate the whole wheel.
13:45Incredibly, this 128-year-old wheel still operates daily.
13:50It's one of Paul's favourite places in the city.
13:53If you think about it, people from the Orient Express
13:58had the same experience what we are having right now
14:03is mind-blowing, in my opinion.
14:06And it's not only the experience being in the same gondola,
14:10but also having almost the same view like back then.
14:15This is what makes the Wiener Prater very special.
14:28At the start of the 20th century,
14:30Vienna buzzed with excitement and culture.
14:35It was the famous city of music,
14:38once home to Beethoven, Brahms and Strauss.
14:42Philosophers, politicians and artists
14:45all sat at its famed coffee houses
14:47and discussed the issues of the day.
14:50It was one of the most exciting cities in Europe
14:53and one that helped to shape the modern world.
14:57But perhaps the city's most famous resident
14:59was altogether less flashy.
15:03Despite this, some Orient Express passengers
15:05travelled to Vienna, especially to see him.
15:08The patients who arrived here for the first time
15:13or even another time,
15:15it was always the same procedure.
15:18It's a private apartment, it's a private building,
15:21so you have to ring the bell and push the door.
15:26Daniela Finzi is the research director
15:28of the Sigmund Freud Museum.
15:29Behind this door on Burghasser 19
15:34were the consulting rooms of Freud,
15:37the father of psychoanalysis.
15:39Just imagine that all these patients
15:42and all the family members and Freud himself
15:46took the same stairs which we are taking now
15:50and nothing has changed.
15:53Patients would climb these stairs to the first floor.
15:56So it's the same thing as in former days
16:00you have as downstairs to ring and push the door.
16:07Yeah, and then we enter Freud's wardrobe,
16:13the practice wardrobe, which, and this is a miracle,
16:17which is basically the same as it was 100 years ago.
16:22I would now go to the waiting room
16:25which is just over here
16:28waiting for Dr. Freud opening the door.
16:34And this is also a very special setting
16:37because we see the original furniture of the waiting room.
16:41We see different edgings
16:45and different photographs which were hanging here.
16:50Freud's patients were largely
16:52from the upper echelons of society.
16:54Some travelled across Europe to see him,
16:57including on the Orient Express.
17:00We enter now Freud's practice.
17:04This was a room
17:05designated to secrets,
17:09to intimacy,
17:11to a very personal relationship.
17:14This is where the patients
17:15had the task
17:18to freely associate.
17:20Psychoanalysis was developed by Freud over many years.
17:25He believed that our behaviour is shaped by repressed subconscious experiences,
17:30often from our childhood.
17:33By coming to a consulting room,
17:35freely associating and talking out loud,
17:38Freud believed troublesome behaviour and feelings could be eased.
17:42Patients would enter the consulting room
17:44and lie down on a couch.
17:48Everything was in dark, warm colours,
17:51a warm, dark red,
17:53but also the carpets
17:55and the different paintings were in dark colours.
18:00Freud was also smoking.
18:01There's not so much sun coming into this room.
18:06So it was already a very special atmosphere.
18:11Freud's theories and phenomenal success
18:13made him one of the most famous people in the world by the 1930s.
18:17But it also drew unwanted attention.
18:20Freud completely misjudged
18:25or even underestimated the Nazis.
18:27This is important
18:29because this meant that when
18:32in March 1938
18:35Nazis came to Austria
18:38and the so-called annexation took place,
18:41Freud was not so easily
18:44to convict
18:45that he had to leave the country.
18:47Daniela has been researching
18:50Freud's final months in Vienna
18:52and the role that the Orient Express played in his escape.
18:58Psychoanalysis was dubbed
19:00a Jewish science by the Nazis
19:02and drew its ire.
19:04When Hitler invaded Austria,
19:07Freud was one of his top targets.
19:11Despite this,
19:12Freud still refused to leave the city.
19:15There were two raids
19:16from the Nazis
19:17here at Berkasse 19.
19:20First of all,
19:22a few days after the Anschluss
19:24from the SA
19:25and one week later,
19:27the Gestapo came to Berkasse 19
19:29and the Gestapo arrested Anna Freud.
19:33Anna, Freud's daughter,
19:35spent hours in Nazi custody.
19:38It was extremely dangerous
19:40and frustrating situation.
19:42Anna Freud did not know
19:48what was happening,
19:49if she would be able to come back
19:52and Freud, of course,
19:55spent the most horrible hours
19:56of his life.
19:58Anna was eventually allowed to return,
20:01but Freud finally realized
20:03that he could not stay in Vienna.
20:05The challenge was not only
20:06to find a country
20:07which would allow you to enter.
20:11The challenge was also
20:12to be able to leave the country.
20:17Freud was helped
20:17by a network of friends
20:19and former patients,
20:21including the great-grandniece
20:22of Napoleon,
20:23Princess Marie Bonaparte,
20:25and the American ambassador
20:27to France,
20:28William C. Bullitt,
20:29a close friend
20:30of President Theodore Roosevelt.
20:32And then there was another person
20:35Freud only met
20:37during these dark days,
20:40a certain Anton Sauerwald.
20:43Sauerwald was sent from the Nazis
20:46in order to manage Freud's assets.
20:51And he said to have known
20:55anti-Semitic positions
20:57before he met Freud,
21:00but to change his mind
21:01in the way that he was
21:03actually helping Freud
21:04in order to get him
21:05out of the country.
21:08Sauerwald helped
21:09push through permissions
21:10for Freud to leave.
21:12They soon booked tickets
21:13for the Orient Express,
21:15leaving on the 4th of June, 1938.
21:18I think they chose
21:20the Orient Express
21:21because it was the most
21:23comfortable way of traveling
21:26for such a long journey.
21:29Yet there must have been
21:30a certain resistance
21:31to approach Germany
21:34in order to go to France.
21:36Leaving Austria meant
21:38to get even closer
21:39to the Nazis
21:40before being able
21:44to leave them behind.
21:46Leaving the city
21:47he had spent his life in
21:48was not easy for Freud.
21:50I have another quote
21:52of a niece of Freud
21:54who came to the railway station
21:56in order to say goodbye.
21:58We arrived at the train
22:00at the time indicated.
22:02I struggle to buy
22:04some red roses
22:05which I know he loves,
22:07but he doesn't speak
22:09to us anymore.
22:11He sits motionless
22:12in the simple coat
22:14I have known him in
22:15for years,
22:17wearing a grey velour hat.
22:20He sits in a carrying chair
22:22with his back
22:23against the city
22:24that drives him away.
22:33The train left Vienna
22:34and headed straight
22:35towards Germany.
22:37As Nazi officials
22:38patrolled the train,
22:40the entire party
22:41held their breath.
22:42We know from
22:43Freud's personal notes
22:45in his diary
22:46that he was extremely
22:49worrying about controls
22:51in the German territory
22:53and that he was
22:54extremely released
22:55when they passed
22:56the border at Kiel
22:57and no longer
22:59were in Germany.
23:01After a brief stay
23:02in Paris,
23:03Freud caught the boat train
23:04to London, Victoria.
23:06He spent the remainder
23:07of his life
23:08in Hampstead.
23:10The Orient Express
23:11was part of this
23:13helping machine
23:14and it was
23:15the vehicle
23:16which brought
23:17Freud out of Vienna,
23:18freed him from the Nazis
23:19and allowed him
23:21to spend his last month,
23:24one year and a quarter,
23:26in freedom.
23:39Crossing the border
23:41into Hungary,
23:42Orient Express passengers
23:43from London
23:44would pass
23:44into their sixth country.
23:48With Vienna
23:49three and a half hours
23:50behind it,
23:51the Orient Express
23:52pushed onwards
23:53towards its next major stop,
23:55Budapest.
23:58Just outside the city,
24:00the train would have run fast
24:01through the tiny town
24:02of Biotoroboy
24:03across these viaducts.
24:06In 1931,
24:08they became the scene
24:09of an infamous attack,
24:10one that threatened the future
24:13of the Orient Express.
24:17Tomáš Tóreján is a historian
24:19with a specialism
24:20in Hungarian railways.
24:22On the 13th of September,
24:251931,
24:26there was a huge explosion
24:28here on this viaduct,
24:30which became one of the most
24:32well-known and most tragical
24:36train catastrophes
24:38of the Hungarian history.
24:4020 minutes after midnight,
24:42a luxury express train
24:43heading towards Vienna
24:44passed a suspicious suitcase
24:46on the side of the tracks.
24:47It exploded
24:50with a huge noise
24:55and huge light
24:56and as a consequence,
24:58the locomotive
25:00and four carriages
25:02fell down
25:03to the abyss.
25:06The driver of the train
25:07noticed the problem
25:09and tried to stop the train
25:10as fast as possible
25:12and because of his fast reaction,
25:14the last six carriages
25:15were spared
25:16and instead of hundreds
25:18of victims,
25:2022 persons
25:21died in this incident,
25:23including the heroic
25:24driver of the train.
25:26As the sun came up
25:27the following morning,
25:29rescuers discovered
25:29a horrific scene.
25:32The remnants of the train
25:33which fell down
25:34to the abyss
25:35lied there.
25:37Four carriages
25:38and the locomotive
25:40fell down
25:42to that place
25:42with 22 dead bodies
25:45inside.
25:46With the tracks destroyed
25:47and the threat
25:48of more attacks assumed,
25:49all trains were stopped.
25:51Passengers had to make
25:52their way towards Istanbul
25:53via a different route.
25:55They had a strong fear
25:57that sooner or later
25:58another attacks
25:59will be committed
26:00on the Hungarian railways.
26:02Therefore,
26:03thousands of Hungarian
26:04policemen
26:05guarded
26:06the important rail lines
26:08for weeks.
26:10The investigators
26:10soon turned their attention
26:12to who carried out
26:13the attack
26:13and what their motivation
26:15might have been.
26:16They founded
26:17the remnants of the bomb
26:19and it became clear
26:21that the explosive
26:23which was used
26:23during the incidents
26:25was acquisite,
26:26which is mainly used
26:27in mining.
26:30A leaflet was found
26:31by the policemen
26:33with communist propaganda.
26:34on the paper
26:36the message said
26:38that workers of Hungary
26:39you had no rights
26:41so far
26:42but we will fight
26:43for those rights.
26:45Because of that
26:47and because of the
26:48regular political hysteria
26:50the authorities
26:51became suspicious
26:53about a potential
26:54communist terror attack.
26:57Hungary declared
26:58martial law
26:59as nerves began
27:00to rise
27:01about the safety
27:02of travelling
27:02across Europe
27:03on Grand Express trains
27:04such as the Orient Express.
27:08There were even rumours
27:10that it was the Orient Express
27:11that had been attacked.
27:14All resources
27:15were thrown
27:16into solving the crime.
27:18Despite this
27:19the investigation stalled.
27:21The investigation
27:23became only successful
27:25after the Austrian authorities
27:27captured the person
27:29who was connected
27:31to many attacks
27:33against various railways
27:35and his name
27:36was Silvester Matuszka.
27:39He was a Hungarian citizen
27:40with interests
27:41in Austria
27:42who had some interests
27:45in mining
27:46and in the metal industry
27:48and later
27:50he became
27:51the number one suspect.
27:53Incredibly
27:53they soon discovered
27:54that Matuszka
27:55was at the scene
27:56of the explosion.
27:56and he was hurt
27:59by the Hungarian authorities
28:01during the investigation
28:03but he masqueraded himself
28:06as a passenger
28:07who injured himself
28:08during the explosion.
28:10Every detail
28:11of Matuszka's life
28:12was investigated
28:13but despite this
28:14the authorities
28:15couldn't work out
28:16why he would attack
28:16the train.
28:18There was a theory
28:20that he was aroused
28:21sexually by explosion
28:23by the light
28:24and by the noise.
28:25there was another theory
28:26that he was hypnotized
28:28by someone
28:28and he was used
28:29by this person
28:30for terrorist attacks
28:32because of the intention
28:34of a secret conspiracy.
28:37It soon became clear
28:39however
28:39that Matuszka
28:40was not a communist.
28:42It's possible
28:43the smoking gun note
28:44was planted.
28:45We can only presume
28:48that this attack
28:51was organized
28:51by some kind
28:52of right-wing group
28:54which wanted
28:55to move forward
28:56to a fascist type
28:57dictatorship in Hungary.
29:00Matuszka
29:00was found guilty
29:01of the attack
29:02in 1934
29:03and sentenced
29:04to life in prison.
29:06It was never established
29:08why he carried out
29:09the attack
29:09or if he acted alone.
29:10The rumour
29:12that it was
29:13the Orient Express
29:14that was attacked
29:15persisted.
29:16Embellished over time
29:17it became part
29:18of the legend
29:18of the train
29:19one that not even
29:20explosives could stop.
29:23In the 1970s
29:24this line
29:25through Biatorbay
29:26was abandoned
29:27as the tracks
29:28were relayed
29:29in preparation
29:29for high-speed trains.
29:32So these viaducts
29:34now stand
29:34as silent memorials
29:36to those killed.
29:42Half an hour
29:43after passing
29:44through Biatorbay
29:45Orient Express passengers
29:47arrived into
29:48Hungary's capital
29:49Budapest.
29:52Formed of the twin towns
29:54of Buda and Pest
29:55on either side
29:56of the river Danube
29:57Orient Express passengers
29:59found themselves
29:59at one of the most
30:00impressive stations
30:01of their journey so far.
30:03Nugati.
30:08Its ornate iron roof
30:10covers a 14,000
30:11square metre
30:12trainshare.
30:13It was built
30:14by the Eiffel Company
30:15of Paris
30:16a decade before
30:17they built
30:17the Eiffel Tower.
30:22The iron beams
30:23were precast
30:24in Paris
30:24and transported
30:25to Budapest.
30:28As impressive
30:29as the station is
30:30there's even more
30:31luxury hidden away
30:32from regular passengers.
30:38This waiting room
30:40was built
30:40for Habsburg
30:41Emperor
30:41Franz Joseph
30:42and his wife.
30:46Its walls
30:47are highlighted
30:47with gold
30:48and decorated
30:49with the coats
30:50of arms
30:50of all the countries
30:51you could reach
30:51from this station
30:52in 1877.
30:54Berlin.
31:01This station
31:02was a grand entrance
31:04way for international
31:05express trains
31:05including the Orient Express
31:07a sign that this was
31:09a city looking outwards
31:11to the world
31:11despite political
31:12machinations
31:13within Hungary
31:14at the time.
31:17For passengers
31:19alighting here
31:20Budapest
31:20was the city
31:21of spas
31:22and there was one
31:24in particular
31:24that catered
31:25to the most
31:26exclusive
31:26of clientele.
31:30So this is
31:32one of the biggest
31:33bath complexes
31:34in central Europe
31:35the thermal bath
31:37of Budapest
31:38which we call
31:39Sechenyi
31:39and it's
31:41such an impressive
31:41building
