Short filmTranscript
00:00Charlotte is a city close to my heart, but I wanted to dramatically change my life.
00:08The big idea was Muay Thai.
00:10Justin left it all in the States to start a business in Bangkok and pursue his dreams in Thailand's Muay Thai Mecca.
00:16But he had a little setback.
00:18I heard a pop and that was my Achilles.
00:20But don't let that bum leg fool you. Justin's got big dreams.
00:24He wants luxury and large space for $7.50.
00:27This is like a postage stamp. I'm starting a new business and I told myself I'm not gonna blow my budget.
00:32What about older buildings?
00:34I feel like I'm an animal in a cage right now. I'm in trouble.
00:50I was born in Massachusetts.
00:52I've always been an athlete and always been playing sports, but I also had a huge passion for music.
00:58And that took me out to the West Coast in LA.
01:00I tried to make that my career.
01:02I had some amazing experiences, but ultimately ended up making that a part-time endeavor and focusing on real estate in Charlotte, North Carolina.
01:10And it just became a boom town.
01:13I was living in a big house. It was great, finally being successful, but I didn't feel fulfilled.
01:19I definitely have a love for travel.
01:22I did missionary work in my 20s that opened up my horizons.
01:26Because when you see how other people live, it teaches you to evaluate your own perspective on life.
01:31Bravo! Bravo!
01:32I did a lot of traveling, trying to discover myself.
01:35But I had never been to Thailand.
01:38I visited Bangkok and I was so impressed.
01:42But then when I started actually learning more about the culture, specifically Muay Thai,
01:46there's a six-month visa that I can pursue.
01:49So that was the catalyst.
01:50I sold my house, my car, even my beloved guitar.
01:54And I'm also giving up my steady salary to start a business in Thailand.
01:58I'm taking a gamble on myself because I'd rather give it a shot than always wonder.
02:02I was already consulting on the side.
02:05And it was time to take the big plunge and just do consulting full-time in Thailand.
02:10Something is still very wrong with this stuff.
02:13Another big goal of mine is to get back to training because I had a little accident.
02:17I got off the plane and literally within eight hours of touching down in Bangkok,
02:22me and the punching bag got into an altercation where I was throwing some kicks and I heard a pop.
02:28Fortunately, it was only a partial tear of my Achilles.
02:31But according to my physiotherapist, I'm only one month away from being able to retrain.
02:36And I'm so excited to get back after it.
02:39The main things that I love about Bangkok is the public transportation.
02:43It's called the SkyTrain BTS.
02:45It's quick and there's something fun called the water taxis that go around the outer circle of Bangkok.
02:50The food is great.
02:52And of course, I love the people.
02:54I've just found it so wild to have all the modern conveniences of a big city but at a fraction of the cost.
03:00Where are you situated right now?
03:01I'm staying at a hotel.
03:02But I'm definitely looking to stay long term.
03:05Okay.
03:06How's your coffee?
03:07It's good.
03:08Nice.
03:09Justin is a lively single man coming to Bangkok for the first time.
03:12I would say I've almost seen it all after spending two decades in real estate.
03:16But I don't know anything about the market in Bangkok.
03:19I've heard it's the wild wild west.
03:21It's quite hot, especially in the central area.
03:24So the number one thing is being walking distance to Muay Thai.
03:28It's in Tonglor.
03:29Okay.
03:30Tonglor is definitely in high demand.
03:32I am a little concerned because I need to keep my expenses low enough to get my business off the ground.
03:39If I need to be away from Tonglor, I would like to be closer to BTS.
03:44I know that.
03:45And then this might sound a little bit crazy, but close to a hospital.
03:48I actually just had an injury to my calf and my Achilles.
03:51Oh no.
03:52Yeah.
03:53Are you like working from home or how is yourβ¦
03:55Yes, I'm building my sales consulting agency.
03:58I need space.
03:59At least one bedroom, one bathroom, furnished with a modern aesthetic and like pool, gym, sauna, big balcony.
04:06Okay.
04:07And then also like a washer and dryer.
04:09That would be great.
04:10What about price points?
04:11Sure.
04:12Right now, $750.
04:13So because Tonglor is quite expensive, are you open to exploring other areas?
04:18I'm going to be honest with you.
04:20I'd rather not.
04:21Then the budget has to go a little bit higher.
04:24We're in Tonglor right now.
04:26This one is the closest to your Muay Thai place.
04:29Okay.
04:30I'm going to try to contain myself.
04:31But if you are taking a BTS, then it's like 15 minutes.
04:34Damn.
04:3515th floor.
04:36Balcony is small, but it has good views and good amenities.
04:39All right.
04:40I'm excited.
04:41Welcome to Ivy Tonglor.
04:43It's a one bed, one bath.
04:45This thing's a beast, but it doesn't look too new.
04:48It's about 15 years old.
04:50It's only about five minutes walk to your Muay Thai gym.
04:53Yes.
04:54But it is further to the BTS, around 15 minutes.
04:56That's disappointing, but I'll take it.
04:58And it's 900.
05:00Ooh, that's brutal.
05:01Oh man, that's tough.
05:02I told myself when I move here, I'm not going to blow my budget.
05:06And so this is going to have to be exceptional to make it worth it.
05:09Let's check it out.
05:11Wow.
05:12It's got an open airy vibe going on.
05:16Is it furnished?
05:17Yes.
05:18What you're seeing comes with the room, and the owner actually renovated the place.
05:23So you have new cabinets, countertop, sturdy.
05:27I dig it.
05:28This TV is amazing.
05:30I've got to check out the sofa.
05:32I mean, it's a little bouncy.
05:35Could you verify for me?
05:36Let me, let me give it a try as well.
05:40I mean, yeah.
05:41Oh, I love it.
05:42We can work with it.
05:43But this chandelier is giving me nightmares.
05:46Liberace would look at this and literally devolve into an artist that never made it.
05:50Is there any way to get rid of this thing?
05:52I don't think we could.
05:53Well, I'll see what I can do about that.
05:55But you know what I like?
05:56This is kind of like a workstation.
05:57Yes.
05:58That's great.
05:59Yeah.
06:00So you can, you know, have a head space at your office area here.
06:03Yeah.
06:04I'm not going to lie.
06:05I'm impressed so far.
06:06Let's go check out this balcony.
06:07Okay.
06:08What do you think?
06:10The view is great, but I can barely even fit out here.
06:15Disappointing would be an understatement.
06:17I'm used to having a lot of space in the United States, and this is like a postage stamp.
06:22Is this a washer dryer combo?
06:24Unfortunately, it's a washer only.
06:27Oh.
06:28This balcony is a mega turd.
06:30I'll take note of that.
06:31It's the most anticlimactic moment of my search so far.
06:35Let's check out the bedroom and see what we got.
06:36Okay.
06:37But Justin needs to keep his priorities in mind.
06:40This is decent.
06:41This view is banging.
06:43If he can overlook the side of the balcony, he will get to walk to his gym.
06:48Yeah, definitely.
06:49Muay Thai is the number one reason I came to Thailand, so that's a big deal to me.
06:54Now, drum roll please.
06:56The bathroom.
06:57Let's check this out.
06:58Good size sink and a space age toilet action.
07:01Can I try this thing?
07:02Yeah, you try it.
07:03Okay.
07:04Oh!
07:05Oh my goodness.
07:07This toilet means business.
07:09Oh, Pin.
07:10Is this jacuzzi?
07:11Yes.
07:12This is awesome.
07:13After kicking some butt at Muay Thai, I come back here.
07:15The jacuzzi is a pleasant surprise.
07:17Pin did not warn me about that.
07:19That is pretty cool.
07:20So the building is older, but the amenities are amazing.
07:24I'm digging this.
07:25You can actually see the pool from here.
07:27It's inspiring.
07:28Oh, wow.
07:29This is solid.
07:30Does it come with a free sunburn?
07:32A little bit of sunburn.
07:33Overall, I like it.
07:36Location is insane because I can get to Muay Thai on feet.
07:40And you have a dedicated desk for working.
07:43But the BTS distance is pretty far.
07:47It's more money than I want to spend.
07:49And the balcony was way too small.
07:51The chandelier is still bothering me.
07:53I want you to see if you can show me something that's not as dated.
07:57We do have that, but he's going to have to be a little bit further out.
08:01Pin's next option is cheaper.
08:04$750.
08:05Oh, okay.
08:06And more well-connected.
08:07I'm in love with the proximity to the train.
08:10But Justin wants to have his cake and eat it too.
08:13What am I doing three times a week?
08:14Muay Thai.
08:15Boom.
08:16It's so far.
08:19I've been thinking about moving abroad for a long period of time,
08:23but there was always something coming up in life keeping me in the United States.
08:27And then I discovered Muay Thai, and that really crystallized this bold new move for me.
08:33It's become a big part of my life, and I'm so incredibly committed to it, especially after what I've been through.
08:39I had a massive Achilles injury.
08:41I was rushed to the hospital.
08:42They took amazing care of me.
08:44I have an extreme depth of gratitude for the Thai people.
08:48This injury has proven that the Thailand experience is something I'm serious about, and the Muay Thai component is going to be here to stay,
08:55because even this injury couldn't take me out.
08:57But right now, my focus is getting my business where it needs to be.
09:01It's a sales consulting agency.
09:03What I understand, there's actually no closed deals in the last 90 days from that particular agent.
09:09Starting a business is a significant risk.
09:12The time zone difference is really challenging, because 90% of my clients are back in the States.
09:18But I have to bank on myself and reclaim my entrepreneur spirit.
09:23Oh, damn. He's going to bump into the car.
09:26Justin wants to live in Tonglob, where his gym is, but he also wants to have luxury, good amenities, modern, things like that.
09:33So with the budget right now, I'm thinking we should move a little bit further out to the Proconong area.
09:38It's a one bed, one bath, two stops away from Tonglob.
09:42That is a little farther than I would like.
09:44But it's very close to the BTS.
09:46It's still a very vibrant area to live, and it's bigger than the last place.
09:51Okay, I'm a little bit skeptical, but I'm hoping Pin has something up her sleeve with this long-ass drive.
09:57Welcome to Lola.
09:58The BTS is right there. You weren't kidding. It's so close.
10:01I like it. I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but that construction is pretty intense.
10:06It's going to be just like for a while, and that's it.
10:09Construction noise drives me crazy, but hopefully I can work through it.
10:12It's on the 11th floor, and it is listed for 750.
10:16Oh, okay. Right on the money. Let's give it a shot.
10:19Yeah. On the sixth floor, this is where the pool and gym is.
10:24This is wild.
10:26It's like if Las Vegas and Greece were allowed to have a little baby pool.
10:30It would be this whole setup. I love the vibe.
10:32That's great to hear. Do you want to check out the gym?
10:35Oh, yeah.
10:36Okay, let's go. What do you think?
10:38Oh, okay. It's a little on the smaller side, but at least it's got some good AC, and I can always jump in the pool after.
10:44Correct.
10:45Have a good workout, so it's decent.
10:47Let's check out the apartment then.
10:49I can see why Pin wanted me to look at this location. The pool is awesome and so close to BTS.
10:55I think he will find benefits to that.
10:57My biggest concern right now is how far is it from Tonglor Muay Thai, as in how many millennia away?
11:04I mean, it's a little 2015 in here. It's got the odor of a stale piece of bread. I'm just going to ignore that, but it's nice and wide open. I like this big dining table.
11:17I think it can be for even like a work setup.
11:19It even has a weird fourth chair with bonus cat hair on it. I was wondering what it was smelling. That's what it is. This place has got a cat hairball vibe.
11:26But let's check out the kitchen.
11:29All right, now right away, I'm a little claustrophobic and I can fit one pan and only one pan in the sink.
11:36Please tell me that this is a washer and a dryer.
11:38No, it's only a washer.
11:40This kitchen is very small. I can't even move around in it and everything looks old. I'm not impressed.
11:45I understand his concerns around the condition of the unit.
11:48There's like discoloration. I don't know if they like also smoked cigarettes, not only just had cats, which is kind of like the worst combo.
11:55But I do think we can talk to the landlord and see what they can do for him.
11:58I'm impressed with this bathroom. And you have a bathtub.
12:01Okay, cool. And a very convenient view right here, which could be a little questionable at times.
12:07It's for sexy time.
12:08Oh, it's for sexy time. And I guess it does brighten the place up a little bit.
12:12Yeah.
12:13Peep shows aren't exactly my thing, but hey, it's nice and bright in here.
12:16Let's head over to the bedroom.
12:19I'm having like an emotional back and forth with this place.
12:22The ceilings aren't super high, but it is consistently bright in here.
12:26Let's go ahead.
12:28All right.
12:29It's very small, which I guess I'm just going to have to get used to.
12:32Just for two people.
12:33However, it's got a really cool view. I do love the proximity to the train, but I am really turned off by that construction.
12:43Literally, I see sparks flying and my gut reaction is telling me that I'm not going to come out on the balcony and relax much, at least anytime soon.
12:50Because of the noise.
12:51Yes. Overall, on a scale of one to ten, it's a five. The price is great. Right where I need to be to protect my investment for my business.
13:00The pool was really cool and I'm in love with how close the BTS is. However, what am I doing three times a week?
13:08Muay Thai. Boom.
13:10It's only two stops.
13:12Two stops sounds decent, but logistically, I don't know if that's going to work for me.
13:16Okay.
13:17I think I could go smaller if it was close to Muay Thai and BTS.
13:22Finn saves the best location for last.
13:25One stop from Tong La.
13:26Perfect.
13:27But I don't know if I'm being punked right now. This is so small. I feel like I'm an animal at a cage.
13:34I know we have a professional relationship, but I wanted to get your opinion.
13:37What's the most popular dating app?
13:38Tinder.
13:39Oh, still in the States, Tinder. It's like a last resort, you know, but it just sounds like Asia still has it going strong.
13:45Yeah.
13:46So I am single and I'm excited to start dating and also to see if there's a cultural fit because that can be challenging when you come from completely different backgrounds, but I'm definitely excited.
13:56Let's turn up.
13:57I would attempt to describe myself as easygoing. I've stumbled upon a few people saying that I'm funny and I'll leave out the negative parts of who I am.
14:06What is that?
14:07This is a belly pork.
14:09I'm typically just a boring American eater, but I'm starting to adventure out a little bit after being in Thailand and I've discovered I don't mind spicy food.
14:19How do you say spicy?
14:20Pet.
14:21Pet.
14:22Pet.
14:23I'll drink to that. I'm hoping to find a life partner that would be great and ideal, but the number one priority is launching my own business.
14:32And as far as like expectations in a home, I'm used to having a lot of space in Charlotte and based on the house hunt, it's obviously going to be a much smaller footprint.
14:43He has to compromise because he wants to live where everybody kind of like wants to be.
14:48Pin's final option will give Justin the opportunity for an active social life while also keeping him close enough to his physical outlet.
14:55Trompong is just one station away from Tongla and train station is just five minutes walk, so it's very convenient.
15:01Great.
15:02But in a trendy area, space comes at a premium.
15:06It's listed one bed, one bath.
15:08It's a little bit on a smaller side, but you get the big balcony.
15:12Okay, Justin.
15:13All right.
15:14This is Xiaomi's 31.
15:15What do you think?
15:16Nice and modern.
15:17Yeah.
15:18I like the floral component to it.
15:19We're on the 16th floor.
15:21Great.
15:22And how much?
15:23825.
15:24Ouch.
15:25That's a little bit above what I was hoping.
15:27The price tag is a red flag, but I do like the way the neighborhood looks.
15:31I've heard good things about Prong Pom.
15:32It says exclusive right on it, so I feel important.
15:35VIP.
15:36Here we are.
15:37Wow.
15:38We are in the unit right now.
15:39Oh, already here.
15:40Just like, boom, we got an elevator flex right here.
15:43It's a private elevator and foyer.
15:45So you can sit down here and put some shoes on or...
15:48In case I have a leg injury.
15:50And I just want to point out, there's a washing machine here as well.
15:54Two in one.
15:55Cool.
15:56Finally, I've got a washer and a dryer.
15:58This is actually a big factor for me.
15:59Go ahead.
16:00Yeah.
16:01All right.
16:02Oh, wow.
16:03The kitchen area right when you walk in.
16:05Correct.
16:06So you have good-sized kitchen for single men.
16:09It's kind of small, but it's very modern.
16:12This is the bathroom right here.
16:13Correct.
16:14Immediately, I noticed I've got some sweet sneaker mirror action going on right here.
16:19And I like this shower.
16:22But what do I do in there?
16:24It's a Japanese bathtub.
16:25So maybe you cannot put your legs out, but you can soak your body in.
16:29Oh, okay.
16:30Maybe a little mini ice bath or something like that in there.
16:33Oh, okay.
16:34It's got kind of a nice, bright, open feel when you walk in.
16:38Might be able to do some of my client meetings here.
16:41High ceilings.
16:42That's a plus.
16:43But it looks like the bed is a little awkwardly placed here.
16:45Let me see if it's comfortable just to make sure.
16:49Decent.
16:50But this feels more like a studio.
16:52This is a one bed because this door closes up for you to be in a one bedroom, Justin.
16:58Let me show you.
17:00Hmm.
17:04What do you think?
17:05Um, wow.
17:08I feel like I'm an animal in a cage right now.
17:11You look like a little cute elephant.
17:12Thank you, but I need to get out.
17:14You're free?
17:15Yes.
17:16Knowing myself, if I get up on some late night and I don't know what's going on,
17:20I'm going to walk straight into this glass enclosure and lose at least one limb.
17:26Maybe I show you the highlight.
17:27The big balcony.
17:29Wow, look at this view.
17:31This is insane.
17:32Shall we?
17:33Want to have a sit?
17:34Yes.
17:35Okay, let me sit with you and enjoy the outside.
17:38This balcony is great.
17:40I don't think you can find any other apartment with this balcony.
17:43This exceeded my expectations, I'll admit.
17:45Yeah, and actually I want to show you the gym and the pull upstairs.
17:48I would love to.
17:49Okay, let's go.
17:50Okay.
17:51All right, let's take a look out here.
17:54This is really cool.
17:56You got the whole view inspiring you.
17:58It's not always a given that they actually have 50 pound weights, so I'm excited about that.
18:03Here we are at the pool.
18:06It's pretty snazzy.
18:08You got the pool with the view.
18:10The double combo.
18:11I like it.
18:12I'm really surprised how they mixed together city life and the consciousness of trees and stuff.
18:19I can dig it.
18:21Overall, I like the place and I definitely like the neighborhood.
18:25However, when I felt caged in inside of that little tiny apartment, maybe it's just my expectations, but I just felt like this is so small.
18:35It made me feel like I was in a studio.
18:37And with my work, I need to have a little bit more separation.
18:40It's not a studio.
18:41Penn has showed me some great places, so it's going to be a tough call.
18:46If I was going to put you on the spot, which one would you pick?
18:49Why?
18:50It's your decision.
18:51Thank you for your patience because I know it was a lot.
18:56I think this move has the upside of allowing me to become the best version of myself.
19:02And being in Thailand, there's a lot of amazing quality of life things that can become possible immediately.
19:09But this is the big deciding moment.
19:11Good news, bad news.
19:12There's a lot of good options.
19:13Ivy Tong lore.
19:14It's a little bit above my budget, but it's a very short walk Muay Thai.
19:19Yeah.
19:20And that's like so much of my life right now.
19:22And you have a dedicated desk for working.
19:25My number one priority is the business.
19:27However, the decor, like totally not my style at all.
19:30That chandelier is like my only nightmare in Bangkok so far.
19:35And the balcony broke my heart.
19:37This is like a postage stamp at Leluk.
19:39When we went out on that balcony, I heard the construction and I was like, no way.
19:43But then it was so close to BTS.
19:45However, not within walking distance to Muay Thai.
19:48And it's like multiple stops away.
19:50But the distance to the BTS will matter for you long term.
19:53You're going to be doing a lot of activities, not just Muay Thai.
19:55Very true.
19:56But inside, there was cat hair that I can smell and see.
20:00And the kitchen was unbelievably small.
20:03Yeah.
20:04Yeah.
20:05You had a private foyer.
20:06Coming in, you feel very exclusive.
20:08For sure.
20:09The balcony was amazing.
20:10I want that balcony so bad.
20:11But ultimately, when I was sitting in that bed, it really felt so small to me.
20:16I'm going to cut that one off the list.
20:17Okay.
20:18I like the pool vibe ultimately more at Leluk, for sure.
20:29But I don't want to be renovating and I don't want to be far away from Tongler Muay Thai.
20:35So, I have to say that because the Muay Thai visa is my number one priority and that Jacuzzi is calling my name after kicking some butt, it's a wrap.
20:44I'm going with Ivy Tongle.
20:45Okay.
20:46Yay.
20:47It feels amazing having my own place and having the neighborhood that I feel a little comfortable in.
20:54The balcony is very small, but there's at least a common area that I can hang out in.
21:00I'm able to work out, hit the pool, and the proximity to the Muay Thai gym is amazing.
21:06So, it's been a good compromise.
21:07Going back to Muay Thai after the injury has been inspiring.
21:11I think the toughest part of settling in has just been the awkwardness of being so far from home.
21:17Still kind of processing that and kind of taking it one day at a time.
21:20But the business is going exceptional.
21:22I'm starting to meet friends and dating has been an experience.
21:26Overall, this move has been the most rewarding decision of my life.
