00:00Voters in Guinea green-light a new constitution that could pave the way for the country's junta leader to run for president.
00:08The draft received just over 89 percent backing, with a turnout of over 86 percent, according to results released late Tuesday.
00:17The opposition is crying foul. Opposition leader Faya Milimono is rejecting the outcome,
00:23alleging there were pre-marked ballots, mass annulments and local chiefs voting under pressure to suppress no votes.
00:31The vote was overseen by a new electoral body, hand-picked by General Mahmadi Dumbuya, who seized power in 2021.
00:41While elections are promised later this year, no date has been announced and Dumbuya hasn't ruled out running himself.
00:48The new constitution extends presidential terms from five to seven years, allows junta members to run,
00:56and creates a senate, with a third of its members appointed by the president.
01:00Rights groups have accused the junta of cracking down on dissent, banning over 50 political parties,
01:07and suspending opposition ahead of the vote.
01:11Still, the prime minister has called the result a mandate of trust and a step towards civilian rule,
01:16but critics across West Africa see it differently, as yet another power grab in a region rattled by coups.
