Himan Brown, already producing the CBS Radio Mystery Theater for the network, added this twice-weekly (Saturdays and Sundays) anthology radio drama series to his workload in 1977. It usually aired on weekends, beginning in February 1977 and continuing through the end of January 1978, on CBS radio affiliates which carried it.

00:00Welcome to the wonderful world of adventure.
00:16I'm Tom Bosley, who with a click of a switch can turn your radio into a magic machine, which will take you wherever you choose.
00:24Today, we go back almost a thousand years and meet one of the merriest heroes who ever lived, a man called Robin Hood.
00:35Now, once you've met him, you'll never forget him.
00:38And to make his adventure more exciting, we've supplied him with not one, but two villains.
00:46The more, the merrier.
00:48Our story, Robin Hood and his Merry Men, was written especially for the General Mills Radio Adventure Theater by Paul Trill and stars Kevin McCarthy.
00:59I shall return shortly with Act One.
01:07A thousand years ago, when England was ruled by cruel kings, there was a real man named Robin Hood.
01:15He fought for the rights of the poor against their vicious ruler, Prince John.
01:21Now, the legends about Robin Hood are many, but one thing is absolute fact.
01:27There was a Prince John who ruled over England while his brother King Richard the Lionhearted was away fighting a war.
01:35When the war was over, King Richard was captured and held for ransom money.
01:39Now, there's an old saying that goes, while the cat's away, the mice will play.
01:46In our story, we should use the word rats.
01:50The rats will play.
01:52Sister?
01:53Ah, sister.
01:54I have just received a letter from Prince John.
01:58Wondrous news.
01:59Quickly, tell me what it says.
02:01To my dearest friends, the Lord High Sheriff of Nottingham and his beautiful sister, Lady Agatha.
02:07Does he really say beautiful about me?
02:10Well, see for yourself.
02:11A slight exaggeration, of course, but most curtsies.
02:15How can you be so cruel?
02:17Does Prince John say anything about his brother?
02:19However, is he gathering the ransom money to free King Richard from captivity?
02:24Oh, he has already corrected the money from the whole country, but he will not send it.
02:30He'll keep it for himself.
02:32Then Richard will rot in jail forever.
02:34And Prince John will be king.
02:37His letter commands us to seize the lands of all those lords who are loyal to King Richard.
02:42I have a list here of those noblemen that we shall ruin.
02:46The first name is Robert, the Earl of Huntington.
02:51Now, he's away in London at the moment.
02:53It should be an easy matter to take his land while he's absent.
02:56Give me twenty of your men and let me go this instant to take possession.
03:00I will.
03:01You go there while I dispose of the second name on my list, Sir Lionel.
03:06He's here waiting to see me at this moment.
03:09And by the time I'm finished with him, he will be ruined.
03:13Ah, Sir Lionel.
03:21You are most welcome.
03:23Please be seated.
03:24I shall stand and be brief.
03:27I cannot pay you the debt I owe you.
03:30It is very difficult to collect two hundred gold sovereigns.
03:33Two hundred.
03:34Oh, you are mistaken.
03:37You owe me four hundred.
03:40But I only borrowed two hundred from you.
03:42Forget the interest that I must charge you?
03:45This is unlawful.
03:47If King Richard were here, he would not permit it.
03:49If you do not give me the money you owe me, your land shall become mine.
03:53You signed the paper.
03:56Well, you have only until six o'clock this evening to deliver the money.
04:03Little John!
04:04Little John!
04:05Oh, where are you?
04:07I have terrible news.
04:09Here I am, Friar Tuck.
04:11Oh, you are shaking like a fat mole of jelly.
04:14Oh, no.
04:15This is no laughing matter.
04:17The Sheriff's sister, Lady Agatha, has just seized all the lands of our friend Robert, the Earl of Huntington.
04:23And what's worse, all her men are waiting in ambush to capture the Earl who is expected back today.
04:30We must wait here to warn him.
04:32Yes, and pray that he comes this way.
04:35Oh, that I'm certain.
04:37He always rides homeward on this path through Sherwood Forest.
04:41Oh, happy day.
04:42It is the Earl of Huntington.
04:43Stop me, Lord.
04:45Stop.
04:46Oh, who dares stop me?
04:48Ah, Friar Tuck.
04:50And little John, why do you stop me?
04:53I'm anxious to get home.
04:54No, you dare not go home.
04:56Dare not?
04:56The Sheriff's sister has seized your lands, and her men lie in ambush waiting to seize you as well.
05:02And you think that will stop me?
05:04I have my sword, my bow, and a quiver full of arrows out of my way.
05:08You dare not go.
05:09At one time or another, you have saved all of us from the vile Sheriff.
05:13Now it's our turn to repay that debt.
05:16Well, I'm most grateful to you, my loyal friends, but...
05:19Uh-uh.
05:19Wait a moment.
05:20Look yonder.
05:22Isn't that the Sheriff's sister?
05:24There were the two mules coming through the glen.
05:26Quickly.
05:27Hide, everybody.
05:28Let me handle this.
05:32Oh, there, Lady Agatha.
05:34Well, we are well met.
05:36And who are you, sir?
05:38Your brother sent me on ahead to guide you safely back home with the gold you have taken.
05:43Sherwood Forest is full of outlaws.
05:45I admire your courage, Lady Agatha.
05:48Outlaws do not frighten me.
05:50And you may call me the Countess of Huntington.
05:54The Countess?
05:55I was not aware that I was married to you.
05:59Uh, you?
06:00You are the Earl of Huntington?
06:02Oh.
06:03Oh.
06:04I beg you, my lord, do not harm me.
06:07I'm a helpless woman.
06:08Have no fear.
06:10You may go, dear lady,
06:12but I shall keep the mules and the gold that you have stolen from me.
06:17Farewell, dear Countess.
06:20Farewell.
06:22Farewell.
06:25From now on, my lord,
06:27I think you will be safer with us here in Sherwood Forest.
06:31Wisely spoken, and since I am now one of you,
06:34an outlaw,
06:35do not call me my lord anymore.
06:38Henceforth,
06:39let me be known as Robin Hood.
06:41My mother called me that when I was a child.
06:43Hey, Robin Hood!
06:45Robin Hood!
06:46And will you not become our leader?
06:48Gladly.
06:48Now, listen, my friends.
06:49From now on,
06:50the sheriff's men will be hunting for me as well as for you.
06:54And I promise you that the sheriff and his sister
06:56will rue the day that they first offended Robin Hood
07:00and his merry men of Sherwood Forest.
07:03Hey!
07:03Hey!
07:03Hey, Robin Hood!
07:04Hey, Robin Hood!
07:05Hey, Robin Hood!
07:05Hey, Robin Hood!
07:06Hey, Robin Hood!
07:07We seem to have another visitor.
07:09Oh, and a sight-er-looking man I have never seen.
07:12Oh, no, I know who it is.
07:14Oh, there's Sir Lionel!
07:16Well, Matt, no!
07:18It is you, Matt.
07:19This is a black day for me.
07:21By six o'clock this evening,
07:23I shall be without my lands
07:24unless I can repay the share of the money I borrowed from him.
07:27Who borrowed from the sheriff?
07:29I did not know he was your friend.
07:31Friend indeed.
07:33A few weeks ago,
07:34when my crops were ready for harvest,
07:35a band of riders came in the night and burned my fields.
07:38Now, I suspect it was the sheriff's work,
07:40but I cannot prove it.
07:42I was ruined.
07:44I needed money to pay off my farmers
07:46who would starve otherwise.
07:48Well, why didn't you come to me?
07:49I would have loaned you the money willingly.
07:51You were away in London.
07:53At any rate, the sheriff offered to give me the money,
07:55and like a fool, I took it
07:56and signed a paper which said that if I didn't repay him,
08:00he could take all my lands in exchange.
08:03Ah-ha.
08:04How much do you owe him?
08:06Four hundred gold sovereigns.
08:07You shall have it.
08:09Firetuck.
08:10Yes, Robert.
08:10Would you hand me one of those bags of gold from the mule's back?
08:14Yes, Sir Lionel.
08:15But I...
08:16I don't understand.
08:18I...
08:18I thought the sheriff's sister had seized all you possessed.
08:22She returned the gold,
08:24though not a-willingly, I must admit.
08:27But I...
08:28I do not know when I can return this money to you.
08:31Oh, cheer up, Sir Lionel.
08:32I shall be more patient than the sheriff.
08:35Now go and stuff this gold down his throat.
08:37And I pray you, return after that.
08:40I am certain that you will have a more cheerful tale to tell then.
08:43Oh, I am forever in your debt.
08:45And then he stole the gold from me.
08:55Oh, daredee.
08:56The scoundrel.
08:58The moment I lay my hands on him, he shall hang.
09:01I promise you.
09:02But will his hanging return my gold?
09:04Ah, be of good cheer, sister.
09:06You shall still be the richest lady in Nottingham.
09:10By tonight, all of Sir Lionel's land shall belong to me,
09:13and I shall give half to you.
09:15Forgive me, my lord sheriff, but I must speak with you.
09:18Well, Sir Lionel, back so soon.
09:21You are most welcome.
09:23Here is the money I owe you.
09:25Count it.
09:26Four hundred golden sovereigns, compliments of Robin Hood.
09:30Robin Hood?
09:31The man once known as the Earl of Huntington.
09:33He sends his warmest regards.
09:36Now, my lord sheriff, the paper of my debt, if you please.
09:41Well, here it is, and the devil take you.
09:45And here, my lord sheriff, is your vile paper and a dozen pieces.
09:50And when you eat them, I beg you to chew carefully, lest you choke.
10:01And then, Robin, I tore the paper into tiny pieces and threw them in his head.
10:09If only I could have seen their faces.
10:11Oh, I do not know when I shall ever be able to repay you.
10:15Oh, you won't have to, my good friend.
10:16Oh, but I must.
10:17It's a death of honor.
10:18No, no, it shall be repaid, but not by you.
10:21The good sheriff will repay it for you.
10:23But how?
10:24I shall think of a way.
10:26Uh-uh.
10:27Another visitor.
10:29Little John, is there always so much traffic in so much forest?
10:32There never was until you came from it.
10:34Oh, there, my friend, dressed in green.
10:38You look to me like a human forest, green king.
10:41And greetings to you, my happy friend.
10:44I see by the meats on your cart you are a butcher.
10:47Where are you bound?
10:48It could not take a market to sell my beef, mutton, and one scrawny chicken.
10:53Well, by my soul, this is the happiest butcher I've ever met.
10:56Why should I not be?
10:58My heart is filled with joy.
11:00Butcher.
11:01Butcher, will you sell me your cart full of meat?
11:03I will pay well, for I have a notion to become a butcher myself.
11:06Robin, what are you up to?
11:07I just thought of a plan to outwit the sheriff, Lionel, and make him pay off your debt to me.
11:13I'll give you ten gold pieces, butcher.
11:16Is it a bargain?
11:17A most generous bargain.
11:19Therefore, I will also throw in my butcher's smock and cap.
11:23Here, let me help you put them on.
11:25Robin, this is rash.
11:26The sheriff may recognize you and arrest you.
11:28Oh, you'll never guess I've suddenly become a butcher.
11:31How do I look?
11:32Ah, like my very old brother.
11:34Here, now hop on the cart and be off with you.
11:37With ten gold coins jingling in my pocket, I shall dance all the way home.
11:42Prepare a feast, my merry men.
11:44And when I return, we shall celebrate the homecoming of Robin Hood, the Jolly Butcher.
11:51Now, here's a coincidence.
11:59Thirty-five years ago, during World War II, when Hitler and his Nazi army occupied France,
12:06those who opposed him went underground to fight his tyranny.
12:09And nine hundred years before, Robin Hood and his merry men did the very same thing to fight against the tyranny of the sheriff of Nottingham.
12:20Only instead of going underground, they hid safely in the open air of Sherwood Forest.
12:26One way or the other, there will always be men willing to risk their lives to fight against injustice.
12:34We'll return in a few moments with Act Two.
12:36A piece of cheese will usually catch a mouse.
12:47But how will a piece of meat catch a sheriff?
12:50Only Robin Hood knows.
12:52He's disguised himself as a butcher with a cart full of meat.
12:56But what does Robin Hood know about being a butcher?
12:59He's never done anything like that in his life.
13:01But as we've already discovered, Robin Hood learns quickly.
13:07Fresh meats for sale, fresh meats, who'll buy, who'll buy.
13:11What do you praise this butcher?
13:13The fairest prices in town.
13:15For those who are fat and wealthy, I charge double, for I do not wish their trade.
13:20But for those who are honest and hungry, I will charge only half, for I wish them to eat hearty and well.
13:26And for the pretty girls, I will charge them but a kiss.
13:31You'll never get rich that way.
13:34True, my good friend.
13:36But think how happy I shall be.
13:39Here you are, my pretty lass.
13:41This juicy leg of mutton is yours for a kiss.
13:47Come to the window, brother, and see the butcher selling his meat in the marketplace below.
13:52A leg of lamb for a kiss.
13:54Who'll buy, who'll buy?
13:55Well, why aren't you out there buying?
13:57Have you no nose for a bargain?
13:58Then, and have you forgotten we're expecting a distinguished guest?
14:02Sir Hubert, Prince John's right-hand man?
14:05Oh, dear me, I have forgotten.
14:07Hurry and buy all the meat that stupid butcher has.
14:10And when Sir Hubert comes, he shall sit down to such a feast his eyes will bulb.
14:16I go, brother.
14:17Who knows?
14:18Perhaps I shall be able to buy all that meat with half a dozen kisses.
14:22Go buy, who buy, quickly now, quickly.
14:29Who buy before my meat is all gone?
14:32Your attention, butcher.
14:34I buy all the meat you have left.
14:36I warn you, dear lady, the price will come high for wealthy ladies I charge double.
14:41And I shall gladly pay.
14:43For if your price for pretty young ladies is but one kiss, then I am willing to give you twice as many kisses.
14:50Is it not a good bargain?
14:52A good bargain for you, my blushing lady, but not for me.
14:56How dare you?
14:58Know you not who I am?
14:59Aye, that I do.
15:01You are the Lady Agatha, sister of the sheriff, whom I see coming this way now, with a scowl on his face.
15:07Well, sister, have you not yet made your purchase?
15:11The wretch will not sell to me.
15:13Oh, dear lady, you mistake me.
15:15I am most willing to sell, but at my price, not yours.
15:19Return to the palace, sister.
15:21I shall deal with this impudent fool.
15:23I go, I go.
15:25Now, how much will you sell me this meat for?
15:29Oh, but my lord sheriff, I would never sell such a poor lot of meat to you.
15:35It's no longer fresh.
15:36It's been in the hot sun for over three hours.
15:38Yes, upon my word, you are an honest man.
15:42I shall need the freshest meat, for soon I shall be entertaining a most distinguished guest,
15:47Sir Hubert, Prince John's right-hand man.
15:51Well, in that case, you must entertain Sir Hubert most royally.
15:54I have a marvelous idea.
15:56On my farm, not far from here, I have 500 head of sleek, fat cattle.
16:01Sir Hubert, you shall have the entire herd for only 800 gold sovereigns.
16:07I'll give you, uh, 400.
16:10And if you refuse, you'll never sell meat again in Nottingham Town.
16:14That would be a calamity.
16:15Very well, my lord.
16:16You drive a hard bargain.
16:18You have the money with you.
16:19Of course, in this purse which hangs from my belt.
16:23Oh, wait a moment and I shall get my man to drive the cattle back to my belt.
16:26No, no, my lord sheriff, that would be unwise.
16:28My farm is on the edge of Sherwood Forest where Robin Hood and his outlaws live.
16:33We must go in secret and not attract them.
16:36Come, ride with me on this cart.
16:38My own men will deliver your cattle for you.
16:41Well, what an honest butcher you are.
16:44Come, let us go.
16:45And while we wait for my men to collect the cattle, you will have a feast that will make your mouth water for days.
16:58Here, sheriff, have another helping.
17:01No, thank you.
17:02I've had enough.
17:03Yes, you were quite right, butcher.
17:05Never have I tasted such delicious meat.
17:09And now I must return.
17:11Where are your cattle?
17:13Well, there goes one of them.
17:15That stag?
17:17What?
17:18Have I been eating deer's meat then?
17:20Aye.
17:21Delicious, wasn't it?
17:22But sure you have deceived me.
17:24You have no herd of cattle.
17:26I did not agree to buy deer's meat.
17:28As you wish.
17:30But since you have dined so well, at least you will pay for the feast.
17:33Not a penny, you scoundrel.
17:36No, my lord sheriff, you shall not pay a penny.
17:38You shall pay me the 400 pieces of gold you carry in your purse.
17:42Never.
17:43I beg to disagree.
17:49Aye.
17:50What is this?
17:51I am surrounded.
17:52By 100 sharp arrows pointed at your heart.
17:55Robin Hood.
17:56I wondered when it would dawn on you.
17:58Now, the money if you please.
18:00Well, I...
18:02I have no choice.
18:04But beware.
18:05It is stolen money, you thief.
18:07Aye, money you have just stolen from a dear friend of mine.
18:12You may go now.
18:13Use my cart.
18:14It's not healthy to walk on a full stomach.
18:20Here, Sir Lionel.
18:22The money the sheriff stole from you.
18:24I don't understand.
18:26Now, return the money to me.
18:28Oh, very well.
18:30My dear friend,
18:31you've just paid off the money you borrowed from me a little while back.
18:34You are now free from all death.
18:36Oh, Robin.
18:37Was there ever a friend like you?
18:43I tell you, sister,
18:44I shall not rest until I see that outlaw hanging from the gallows.
18:48I shall summon all my men and hunt him down.
18:51Softly, brother.
18:52Softly.
18:53You will never catch him that way.
18:55Well, we must lure him back to Nottingham for some purpose he cannot resist.
19:00Then you shall capture him and hang him.
19:03Now, listen carefully.
19:05For I have a plan.
19:07Good people of Nottingham,
19:15out of the goodness of my heart,
19:17I shall hold an archery contest
19:20two days from tomorrow.
19:22And the winner shall receive as his reward
19:25a solid gold arrow.
19:28Come one, come all,
19:30and bring your bows and arrows.
19:31I beg you, Robin.
19:37Do not enter the contest.
19:39It is a trap.
19:40Oh, of course it is.
19:41But how can I resist receiving a golden arrow
19:44from the generous hands of the sheriff himself?
19:46This time you may not fool him.
19:48Oh, nonsense.
19:49Look at me.
19:50How would he ever recognize me
19:51dressed as a beggar
19:53with a patch over one eye?
19:54I am going.
19:55Then I shall go with you
19:56also dressed as a beggar
19:58with the same patch over my eye.
20:00Then, should he recognize you,
20:01I will call attention to myself.
20:04We shall both run
20:05and the sheriff will not know
20:06which one of us to chase first.
20:08Splendid.
20:09You are a man after my own heart
20:11and just as clever.
20:17Oh, that's marvelous.
20:20Look, sister.
20:21No other arrow is in the bullseye
20:23except my own.
20:25By my soul,
20:26I may win my own golden arrow.
20:28Don't be a fool, brother.
20:30You did not come here
20:31to win a golden arrow.
20:32You came to capture Robin Hood.
20:34And where is he?
20:36Why has he not come?
20:37Oh, my noble lord,
20:39is it too late
20:40for a poor old beggar
20:42to have a chance
20:43at winning the golden prize?
20:45See, I've brought
20:46my own bow and arrow.
20:48Yes, old beggar.
20:49I can see your bow and arrow.
20:51But can you see the target?
20:53Just barely, my lord,
20:56but perhaps my arrow
20:57will have sharper eyes.
20:59Shoot then
21:00and be off with you.
21:02Thank you, noble sheriff.
21:03Now, let me see.
21:05Where is the target again?
21:07In heaven's name,
21:08will you shoot, old man?
21:09We haven't got all day.
21:10I shoot.
21:12I shoot.
21:14All right.
21:16I don't believe it.
21:17That old fool
21:18has spicked my arrow
21:19down the middle.
21:20Well, even if Robin Hood
21:21had come,
21:22he would never have
21:23gotten off such a good shot.
21:24Tell me, sheriff,
21:26did I hit the target?
21:28I was not looking.
21:30Aye, you lucky knave.
21:32You have hit the target
21:33and my arrow as well.
21:35So come forth
21:36and receive the golden prize.
21:37Thank you kindly, my lord.
21:40Was that not a lucky shot?
21:42Lucky indeed.
21:44Now take your golden prize
21:45and be off
21:45and never let me
21:46see your face again.
21:47I go.
21:48I go.
21:50You and your
21:51brilliant plan, sister.
21:53Not only have I lost
21:54my golden arrow,
21:55but Robin Hood
21:55has not appeared either.
21:57Waze her moment, brother.
21:59I have been thinking.
22:01Perhaps that was
22:02Robin Hood who just shot.
22:03Oh, don't be a fool.
22:05No, think, brother.
22:06Think.
22:06If once Robin Hood
22:07came to Nottingham
22:08disguised as a butcher,
22:10why could he not come again
22:12disguised as a beggar?
22:14Where is that villain?
22:15Where has he disappeared?
22:17Guards!
22:18Seize the beggar
22:19with the patch
22:20over one eye.
22:21He is Robin Hood!
22:23You are mistaken,
22:24Malady.
22:25I am Robin Hood.
22:26There he is.
22:27Seize that man.
22:29You were right, sister.
22:30The villain is in our hands.
22:32Take him to the palace,
22:33gods.
22:33Oh, at last, Robin Hood,
22:42you are in my power.
22:44What have you to say to us?
22:46Have you lost your tongue?
22:48What was that?
22:50An arrow,
22:51which has been shot in
22:52through the window.
22:53Let me see.
22:54There's a message
22:56wrapped around it.
22:57Let me read it.
22:58Fool of a sheriff,
23:01you have captured
23:03the wrong man.
23:04Signed, Robin Hood.
23:06P.S.
23:07Thank you
23:08for the golden arrow.
23:11But if we have
23:12captured the wrong man,
23:13whom have we here?
23:14Remove the patch
23:15from his eye, brother,
23:16and let us see.
23:17A lion.
23:20In person, Lord Sheriff.
23:21Robin Hood
23:22has spoken the truth.
23:23You have indeed
23:24captured the wrong man.
23:25And now,
23:27if you will excuse me,
23:28I have private business
23:29to attend to.
23:30No, no, no, wait.
23:31It is because of you
23:32that Robin Hood escaped.
23:34You acted as his decoy.
23:37You must be punished
23:38for this.
23:38Gods,
23:40throw this villain
23:40into the dungeon,
23:42and tomorrow at sunrise
23:44he shall be hanged.
23:49What a fool I was.
23:52I should never have
23:52permitted Sir Lionel
23:53to come with me.
23:54Now he shall be hanged
23:56instead of me.
23:57Oh, calmly, Robin.
23:59He's not hanged yet.
24:01At sunrise tomorrow morning,
24:03we will attack the palace
24:04with all our men
24:05and rescue him.
24:06The sheriff will be
24:06prepared for that.
24:08My merry men will not die
24:10because of my rashness.
24:11I must think of a better plan.
24:13But what?
24:15What?
24:22What indeed?
24:24Our friend Robin Hood
24:26has dunked himself
24:27into a pretty kettle
24:28of fish, hasn't he?
24:30He's fooled the sheriff
24:31and his sister twice.
24:33Now to fool them
24:33a third time
24:34is too much to expect,
24:36even from Robin Hood.
24:38But then,
24:39perhaps he may know
24:40something we don't know.
24:42After all,
24:43he is the hero
24:44of our adventure,
24:46not we.
24:46I'll be back shortly
24:48with act three.
24:56One thing is certain.
24:58Robin Hood
24:58has not slept this night.
25:00How can he sleep
25:01when his friend's life
25:02is in danger?
25:04Perhaps Robin
25:05will go to the sheriff
25:06and give himself up
25:07and ask to be hanged
25:09instead of Sir Lionel.
25:10But knowing the sheriff
25:12as we do by now,
25:13I doubt if that would work.
25:16The sheriff
25:16would probably
25:17hang them both.
25:19It's now just
25:20one hour before dawn.
25:22There isn't much time
25:23left, is there?
25:24Little John,
25:25what time is it?
25:26The last hour of night
25:28before the sun rises,
25:29Robin.
25:29I must go now.
25:31Friar Tuck,
25:32would you be good enough
25:33to let me wear
25:34your long brown robe?
25:35I shall return it to you
25:37when I have returned
25:38with Sir Lionel.
25:39Another disguise?
25:41Are you a fool, Robin?
25:42The sheriff and his sister
25:43will smell a rat
25:44the moment they see you.
25:45I think not.
25:47They would not dream
25:47that I would be foolish
25:48enough to try
25:49still another disguise.
25:51Give me your robe.
25:52Oh, you are being foolish, Robin.
25:54I beg you not
25:55to attempt
25:56such a dangerous plan.
25:58Let us attack the palace.
26:00No, no.
26:00Too many lives
26:01would be lost.
26:02I must go alone.
26:04How do I look?
26:07Like a scrawny friar
26:08swimming in a robe
26:10far too big for him.
26:12Not all friars
26:13eat as much as you do,
26:14my fat friend.
26:15Well, the time has come.
26:17I will rescue Sir Lionel
26:19or I will not return.
26:26Good morning, sister.
26:29I didn't sleep a wink last night
26:31with all that hammering going on.
26:34Do not fret, brother.
26:35They are building
26:36a good, strong gallows.
26:37But after Sir Lionel
26:39is hanged,
26:40you and I shall go
26:40back to sleep
26:41and dream happily
26:43of the day
26:43when Robin Hood
26:44hangs from that gallows
26:45as well.
26:47The dawn is coming up.
26:49You down there,
26:51is not the gallows
26:52finished yet?
26:53Let him, my lord.
26:54We shall bring down
26:55the prisoner directly.
26:56Sure.
26:57How did you get in here, friar?
26:59What do you want?
27:00The guard let me pass.
27:02They know it is the custom
27:03for a man about to die
27:04to say his last prayers.
27:06Where is the prisoner
27:07that I may pray with him?
27:10He's below in the dungeon.
27:12You may go, friar,
27:13but be brief.
27:14I will be very brief.
27:17Bless you.
27:20Good morning, friar.
27:22Have you come to pray
27:23with the prisoner?
27:23Yes, guard.
27:24The kind sheriff
27:25has given me permission.
27:27Let me open the prison gate.
27:29There is the prisoner.
27:35Sleep well, guard,
27:36and pleasant dreams.
27:38Robin!
27:38Oh, I knew you'd not forsake me,
27:40but what are you doing
27:41dressed as a friar?
27:42Praying that we both
27:43get out of here alive.
27:44Quick, Lionel,
27:45get into my robe.
27:46Now it's your turn
27:47to be a friar.
27:47But what then?
27:48You will go upstairs,
27:49thank the sheriff
27:50and his sister,
27:51and then leave
27:52and make a beeline
27:53for Sherwood Forest.
27:54How will you escape?
27:55I will not go without you.
27:57I will escape later,
27:58dressed as this sleeping guard.
28:00Now go quickly.
28:01Oh, and on your way out,
28:02tell the sheriff
28:03the prisoner wishes
28:04to speak to him.
28:05Tell him the prisoner
28:06wishes to confess.
28:07What prisoner?
28:08What are you talking about?
28:09Oh, very well,
28:10I'll do as you say.
28:11You're much too clever for me.
28:13And for the sheriff
28:14as well, I hope.
28:21Well, friar,
28:22as the prisoner
28:23said his last prayers.
28:24He has, my lord.
28:25And I have convinced him
28:27to tell you
28:27how you may catch
28:28that villain Robin Hood.
28:30Oh, most marvelous, friar.
28:32You've done me
28:33a great service.
28:34But how may I reward you?
28:37By bidding me
28:37a fond farewell.
28:39Farewell, farewell.
28:41Now,
28:42hasten brother
28:42to the dungeon.
28:43Who knows,
28:44we may yet
28:45have a double hanging.
28:50Guard, quickly,
28:52open the door
28:52of the cell.
28:53I wish to speak
28:54to the prisoner.
28:55May enter the cell,
28:56my lord.
28:57What is this?
28:58Why have you
28:59locked me in my own cell?
29:00Because that is
29:01where you belong.
29:02Robin Hood, you.
29:03The same.
29:04You must forgive me
29:05now if I leave.
29:06I'll see you hanged yet.
29:08Help!
29:09Help!
29:13You guard,
29:14what are you doing up here?
29:16Why aren't you
29:17with the prisoner?
29:17The sheriff
29:18has ordered me
29:19to double the guard
29:20should Robin Hood
29:21make a last attempt
29:22to rescue
29:23Sir Lionel.
29:24Ah, good, good.
29:25What a wise man
29:26my brother is.
29:28Well, why do you
29:28stand there, guard?
29:29Do as you're told.
29:34Robin,
29:34Robin,
29:35our escape
29:36may not be
29:36as much a success
29:37as we think.
29:38You are right,
29:39Lionel.
29:39Well, this is
29:40a serious matter.
29:42Prince John
29:42will send an army
29:43after us
29:43as soon as he hears
29:44how we tricked the sheriff.
29:46Well, from now on,
29:48we must stand guard
29:4924 hours a day.
29:53The warning signal,
29:54is there an army
29:55coming so soon?
29:56An army would make
29:56a greater clatter.
29:59It seems to be
30:00an army of one
30:01approaching.
30:02Such a richly
30:03clad gentleman.
30:04Aye, that he is.
30:06And why does he
30:06wear a mask
30:07upon his face?
30:08Could it be,
30:08Sir Hubert,
30:09the sheriff's guest?
30:10Yes, yes, yes,
30:11but why does he
30:12wear a mask?
30:13Perhaps because
30:14he knows that
30:15no friend of the sheriff
30:16is welcome
30:16in this place.
30:17Oh, there,
30:18my mask friend.
30:19Halt,
30:20and tell us
30:21who you are.
30:22What business
30:23is it of yours?
30:25Everything in
30:26Sherwood Forest
30:27is my business.
30:27Who are you?
30:28And since when
30:29does the king's
30:30forest belong
30:31to a mere woodsman?
30:33Since the king
30:34now lies in a dungeon
30:35in the country
30:35of Austria,
30:36I am keeping it safe
30:37until he returns.
30:38And who gave
30:40you that right?
30:41I took it upon
30:42myself.
30:42Who are you?
30:43It is none
30:44of your business.
30:45Who are you?
30:46What a stubborn
30:47man you are.
30:49Very well,
30:49I will tell you.
30:50I am Robin Hood.
30:51Robin Hood?
30:53I have heard
30:53much about you.
30:55You have been
30:56declared an outlaw
30:57by the sheriff
30:58of Nottingham.
30:59Because I am
31:00a loyal subject
31:01to King Richard,
31:02not to Prince John
31:03who rules
31:04in his place.
31:04Beware,
31:05sir.
31:06You speak
31:07treason.
31:08Not I.
31:08If you wish
31:09to hear treason
31:10spoken,
31:10then visit
31:11the sheriff
31:11of Nottingham.
31:13There is the
31:13real traitor
31:14to King Richard.
31:15What proof
31:16have you of that?
31:17Is the name
31:18of the Earl
31:19of Huntington
31:20familiar?
31:21I know the name.
31:23I have been told
31:24he is brave
31:25and loyal
31:25to King Richard.
31:27But what proof
31:28of your innocence
31:29is that?
31:30Because I am
31:31the former
31:32Earl of Huntington?
31:33Former?
31:33By order
31:34of Prince John,
31:35the sheriff
31:36of Nottingham,
31:36seize my lands
31:37because I am
31:38loyal to King Richard.
31:39There is now
31:40a price upon my head.
31:41King Richard
31:42would not be
31:43happy to hear this.
31:45Well,
31:45how much can a king
31:46hear when he lies
31:47in a dungeon
31:48far away?
31:49That is his affair,
31:51not mine.
31:52Now release
31:53my bridle,
31:54Robin Hood.
31:54I must be
31:55on my way.
31:56Not before you
31:57tell us who you are.
31:58And suppose
31:59I do not.
32:02Well,
32:02then these
32:03hundred arrows
32:04aimed at your heart
32:05will make you speak.
32:07And do you think
32:08I am afraid
32:09of your arrows?
32:11I who have
32:12fought in more
32:12battles than you
32:13can count.
32:14You are a brave man.
32:16Unloose your bows,
32:17my merry men.
32:18This man
32:19has too much
32:19courage to die.
32:21But before you go,
32:22sir,
32:22I would still
32:23see the face
32:24that is hidden
32:24behind that mask.
32:26And so you shall.
32:27But
32:28you will have
32:29to take it
32:30from my face.
32:31Then so I shall
32:33dismount from your
32:34horse, stranger.
32:35And we shall
32:36wrestle for your mask.
32:38Very well,
32:39I am willing.
32:40Here I am,
32:41Robin.
32:41Take my mask
32:42if you can.
32:43It's all
32:44in, Robin.
32:45Here for Robin.
32:46The stranger
32:47is quite as big
32:48as he is.
32:50Well,
32:51friend Robin,
32:53have you had
32:54enough
32:54or will you
32:55try for another
32:56fall?
32:57No.
32:58No,
32:58thank you.
32:59You may have
33:00thrown me,
33:00sir,
33:01but
33:01see?
33:02I have your
33:03mask.
33:07Oh,
33:08on your knees.
33:09On your knees,
33:10every man.
33:11This is King
33:11Richard the Lionhearted,
33:13our true king.
33:14Your majesty,
33:16thank God
33:16you are free.
33:18We have given
33:18you up for lost.
33:20What are you doing
33:20in England?
33:21With the help
33:22of a friend,
33:22I escaped
33:23from my prison.
33:24Oh,
33:24God be thanked
33:25you are back.
33:26Evil things
33:27have happened
33:27in your absence.
33:28Robin Hood
33:29has spoken
33:29the truth.
33:30Your majesty,
33:32I do not ask
33:33you to believe
33:33me alone.
33:34Ask the sheriff
33:35of Nottingham.
33:36But if he is
33:36a traitor,
33:37what truth
33:38would he tell?
33:39To King Richard
33:40Nunn,
33:40but to Sir
33:41Hubert.
33:42Oh,
33:43Sir Hubert?
33:44Why,
33:45he is my brother
33:45John's best friend.
33:47I'm sorry,
33:48Robin,
33:48but I do not
33:49understand.
33:50Well,
33:50it's quite simple,
33:50your majesty.
33:51Sir Hubert
33:52is expected
33:53in Nottingham
33:53this afternoon.
33:55You shall go
33:55instead and say
33:56you are Sir Hubert
33:58and the sheriff
33:59will speak freely.
34:00But he knows
34:01my face.
34:01Not if you wear
34:02your mask.
34:03And to further
34:04convince him,
34:05I shall come
34:05with you.
34:06You will tell him
34:07you captured me
34:08and put me
34:08into chains.
34:09No, Robin,
34:10it is too dangerous.
34:11Oh,
34:11where is the danger?
34:12Am I not
34:13the true
34:13and rightful
34:14king of England?
34:15Who will dare
34:16harm Robin
34:17when I stand
34:17by his side?
34:19No,
34:20it is a good
34:21plan.
34:27At last,
34:28here comes
34:29our guest.
34:30A thousand
34:30welcome,
34:31Sir Hubert.
34:32and how
34:33is our
34:34dear
34:34Prince
34:35John?
34:36Exceedingly
34:36well.
34:37And he
34:38sends you
34:38both
34:39warmest
34:39regards.
34:40But why
34:41do you
34:41wear a
34:41mask,
34:42Sir Hubert?
34:43Because
34:43in riding
34:44through
34:45Sherwood
34:45Forest,
34:46I did
34:46not wish
34:47to be
34:47recognized.
34:48Ah,
34:49very wise
34:50indeed.
34:51Robin Hood
34:51is a
34:52dangerous
34:52man.
34:53Which
34:53reminds me.
34:55Oh,
34:55guards,
34:56bring in
34:56the prisoner.
34:58Greetings,
34:58my lord
34:59sheriff.
34:59Quiet.
35:00What?
35:00It's
35:00Robin Hood.
35:01Robin Hood.
35:02The same.
35:03On my way
35:04through Sherwood
35:04Forest,
35:05I caught him
35:05unaware and
35:06put him
35:06into chains.
35:07Oh,
35:08Prince
35:09John
35:10will be
35:10pleased.
35:11The gallows
35:11is outside.
35:12Let us
35:12hang him.
35:12No.
35:13There is
35:13no hurry.
35:15Robin Hood
35:15is safe
35:16with me.
35:16Well,
35:17then,
35:17tell us,
35:18noble sir,
35:18what news
35:19of King
35:20Richard we
35:21have not
35:22heard in
35:22some time.
35:24What was
35:24the last
35:25news you
35:26have heard?
35:26Oh,
35:27not much
35:27except that
35:28Prince
35:29John was
35:30collecting the
35:31ransom money
35:31from all the
35:32people,
35:33but he
35:33was not
35:34planning to
35:35free King
35:35Richard with
35:36that money.
35:37His exact
35:37words were,
35:38let my
35:39brother rot
35:39in jail.
35:40Yes,
35:40and so
35:41say we
35:42all,
35:42do we
35:42not,
35:42so
35:43human sir?
35:43No,
35:44we do
35:45not.
35:46What?
35:47Time to
35:47unmask
35:48your majesty.
35:50King
35:51Richard!
35:51King
35:51Richard!
35:52Aye,
35:53King
35:54Richard,
35:54you foul
35:55traitor.
35:56I saw
35:59a gallows
35:59standing outside
36:01when I
36:01arrived.
36:02Oh,
36:02no,
36:02do not
36:03hang us,
36:03have pity.
36:04What pity
36:05did you
36:05have when
36:06you took
36:06Robin Hood's
36:07rightful land
36:09from him?
36:09Forgive me,
36:10your majesty,
36:11but I know
36:12of a better
36:12punishment than
36:13hanging.
36:14Let the
36:14sheriff and
36:15his sister
36:15be stripped
36:16of their
36:16wealth,
36:17and then
36:17I shall
36:18give them
36:18a small
36:19plot of
36:19land on
36:20which they
36:20will farm
36:21and try
36:21to grow
36:22food.
36:23There's
36:23a little
36:23place I
36:24know that
36:24has more
36:25stones than
36:26earth on
36:26it.
36:27Let them
36:28at last
36:28know what
36:29it means
36:30to live
36:30by the
36:31sweat of
36:31their brows
36:32instead of
36:33the greed
36:33in their
36:34hearts.
36:35So be
36:35it.
36:36It is a
36:36true
36:37punishment
36:37to fit
36:38their
36:38crimes.
36:39Take
36:40the villains
36:40away.
36:41No,
36:41my
36:41need.
36:42I beg
36:42for mercy.
36:43I beg
36:44you,
36:44please,
36:44be kind
36:45of your
36:45majesty.
36:45And now,
36:47Robin,
36:48how shall
36:49you be
36:49punished,
36:50you and
36:51your
36:51outlaws?
36:52What
36:52outlaws,
36:53your
36:53majesty?
36:54Now that
36:54our rightful
36:55king is
36:55returned,
36:56we are
36:56outlaws no
36:57longer.
36:58We are
36:58your humble,
36:59obedient,
37:00and loyal
37:00subjects.
37:05And
37:05whenever we
37:06hear your
37:06royal trumpet
37:07sounding a
37:08call to
37:08arms,
37:09you may
37:09be sure
37:10we will
37:11be at
37:11your side
37:12to fight
37:13for a
37:14just
37:14king.
37:21And so
37:22Robin Hood
37:23became a
37:23symbol of
37:24justice to
37:25all
37:25Englishmen.
37:26But from
37:27then on,
37:28whenever dark
37:28days came
37:29and England
37:30was in
37:30danger from
37:31unjust kings
37:32or a cruel
37:33enemy,
37:34men did not
37:35lose heart.
37:36They remembered
37:37Robin Hood in
37:38his fight for
37:39the right.
37:40In their
37:40hearts,
37:41Robin Hood
37:42lived forever.
37:44I'll be back
37:44shortly.
37:45I'll be back
37:45shortly.
37:45History
37:51sometimes
37:52plays strange
37:53tricks.
37:54A few
37:55years after
37:56the time
37:56of our
37:57adventure,
37:58King Richard
37:58the Linehearted
37:59was killed
38:00in battle,
38:01and his
38:01wicked brother
38:02then became
38:03King John.
38:05He went
38:06back to his
38:06old tricks,
38:07and England
38:08was worse
38:08off than
38:09it had ever
38:09been before.
38:11But a
38:11band of
38:12lords and
38:12noblemen,
38:13Robin Hood
38:14among them,
38:14probably,
38:16gathered up
38:17an army
38:17and forced
38:18John to
38:18sign the
38:19Magna
38:19Carta,
38:20the great
38:21document which
38:22for the first
38:22time in
38:23history guaranteed
38:25justice to
38:26all men.
38:27The freedom
38:28we enjoy
38:29today is
38:30based on
38:31that piece
38:31of paper
38:32signed so
38:33long ago.
38:39Our cast
38:41included Kevin
38:42McCarthy,
38:43Francis Sternhagen,
38:44Paul Tripp,
38:45Court Benson,
38:46and Ian Martin.
38:48The entire
38:48production was
38:49under the
38:50direction of
