00:00The Sci-Fi Channel.
00:14It's been 29 years since the premiere of the classic Star Trek series,
00:19but Creation Entertainment couldn't wait another minute to throw a 30th anniversary bash.
00:24So we sent comedian, Trekker, and buzz buddy, Patton Oswalt,
00:28to Pasadena to check out the star-studded scene.
00:32I'm with Patrick Stewart, ladies and gentlemen.
00:34I can't believe he showed up.
00:35Jean-Luc Picard, who actually even has an English accent for this.
00:39So that's how dedicated he is.
00:40It was very difficult to rehearse and get this accent
00:42with all your Americans speaking to me in this manner.
00:45It takes like four hours in the morning to apply the English accent.
00:49How much weight do you lose like wearing this all day?
00:52Well, wearing it, I usually lose about five pounds.
00:55Five? That's very nice.
00:56And it slims the hips, too.
00:59It's got the shoulders.
01:01I could use one of these, aren't I?
01:02Because I'm kind of hair-shaped, man.
01:04Well, we can hook you up and we can throw you out into space.
01:06Oh, my God.
01:07Guaranteed, you lose about 15, 20 pounds.
01:10That is hypoallergenic, right?
01:11It's very nice.
01:12It will wash off eventually.
01:13It'll breathe.
01:13Did you leave a little strip in the back, like in Goldfinger,
01:15so you're like, won't suffocate or anything?
01:17Well, then she doesn't have a lot of time, folks.
01:20I better wrap this interview up.
01:21Hi, I'm here with Jim Latta,
01:26and he is from the yet-to-be-built Museum of Science Fiction.
01:29Yes.
01:30We've brought some living artifacts today,
01:32not just costumes,
01:33but we've got some real artifacts from the original show.
01:36This is Barbara Luna, who is Marlena Moreau
01:39in the classic Star Trek episode, Mirror, Mirror.
01:42Pretty hot.
01:43Is he a good kisser?
01:44Is Shatner a good kisser?
01:45He's a good kisser.
01:46Is he?
01:46Probably still is.
01:47Oh, I hear that.
01:49Right here.
01:53In the house.
01:55Colonel Green from Savage Curtain.
01:58Huh?
01:58Philip Pine and Charlie Deercup.
02:00And you.
02:01From Wolf in the Fall.
02:03And Marla from Catawba Street, three-foot.
02:05I couldn't have done a thing like that.
02:07Yeah, my genius.
02:08Jealousy is a sin.
02:09I couldn't do that.
02:11What was your favorite line?
02:13Yes.
02:14I don't force you, Volker.
02:16Oh, man.
02:17I would freak out if someone said that.
02:19Give that to me.
02:21You're like an ambassador?
02:23Right.
02:23A Vulcan ambassador.
02:24Vulcan ambassador.
02:25And you, like, come on the ship?
02:28Do the mind reading.
02:29Did you do the mind meld in the episode?
02:30Oh, yes.
02:32What costume is this?
02:34I don't know.
02:34What crew member wore the big Tasmanian devil t-shirt?
02:37I forget that guy.
02:38Oh, no.
02:39Is he like the Navigator or something?
02:40The cook.
02:41The cook.
02:41You should be ashamed.
02:42What's your name?
02:42You should be ashamed of yourself.
02:44All right?
02:44Why?
02:44You're a disgrace to the convention.
02:45For now, you know, when you come here, for God's sakes, put some kind of costume together.
02:50This is Bob.
02:51And Bob has this really cool table full of all of these original collectibles from the Star Trek series.
02:57Some of this stuff, this is like the original stuff, isn't it?
02:59Absolutely.
03:00What's that right there?
03:01That is the Sarian brandy bottle.
03:04Were those mass produced or did some guy make those?
03:06Dickle put these out with and without alcohol.
03:09Like an alcohol company actually manufactured their alcohol in these bottles?
03:12The bottle was so popular on the original series that Dickle started producing it.
03:17Wow.
03:17It was like some Trekkie in the top echelons of this liquor company.
03:21That's cool.
03:21How much does that go for?
03:23A hundred and a half.
03:23How do you feel now that Star Trek is considered kind of this classic, almost like a classic rock kind of thing, like an oldie but a goodie?
03:34I mean, it's 30 years old.
03:35That's great.
03:36That's wonderful.
03:37I mean, something good just doesn't need to fade away.
03:40It's like fine wine, you know, gets better with age.
03:42Yes, it does.
03:43Live long and prosper.
03:44You ready for this?
03:45She teaches a course in Newfoundland, Canada, about like religion and religion in modern society as well as just religion in general.
03:56And she's here because she says that these Star Trek conventions are like modern pilgrimages.
04:02Yes, what I'm interested in is Star Trek convention attendance as modern pilgrimage.
04:06So that's what I'm down here doing, asking Trek fans what they think about Star Trek and what kind of meaning it gives to their lives
04:14and whether this can be seen as modern ritual or whether it can be seen as religious.
04:21Well, this has been one of the greatest days of my life.
04:24And I just want to say thank you for everyone at the Sci-Fi Channel.
04:28And I'll miss you most of all, Klingon.
04:32Bye.
04:33Live long and prosper, everyone.
04:35Subla.
