00:00Final Frontier
00:01And became the greatest exploration the universe has ever seen
00:05This is the Starship Enterprise
00:06Now, the crew of the Sci-Fi Channel salutes 30 years of Star Trek and beyond
00:12Warp Drive then, Scott
00:14Warp One, Mr. Sulu
00:23On my order, Mr. Data, Mr. LaForge
00:25Enterprise, Spark here
00:30What the hell is happening?
00:31Are your navigational readings going crazy?
00:35Engage
00:3530 years is a long time to exist in the transient world of television and film
00:44Yet Star Trek has managed to not only survive, but to grow in popularity
00:48To find out the secret of its success
00:52The Sci-Fi Channel went to one of the larger European conventions
00:56Generations 2 at London's Royal Albert Hall
00:58Join 1,500 Trekkers on the dance floor of the London Palais
01:01And talk to both fans and stars about the appeal of Star Trek
01:05Star Trek's something you grow up with
01:07I've just been a fan for the last 30 years
01:09The relationships between the people are very interesting
01:13Captain Kirk and Mr. Spark
01:14It's not just a spaceship landing and aliens running around
01:18Those guys with the big glowy brain things
01:21It's about people
01:21The Klingons and the Gorn
01:23I want to tell you how happy I am to be assigned to the Enterprise
01:26There's something about it that has a universality that appeals to people all over the world
01:31It gives hope for the future
01:32See the future where not everything's gone bad, but everything's gone well
01:37Star Trek shows that we as a people are able to overcome extremely petty differences
01:43I've really got a section of quality down to a T
01:46I always loved the continuity of the show
01:47They took the time to really link it
01:49I love Captain Kirk, I think he's wonderful
01:51He does give you hope for the future
01:53There's nothing else like it
01:54Star Trek is a vision of people of different races and cultures
01:57And of course, you know, planet origins working together to a common goal
02:02Our world is reactivated
02:04Our people express their gratitude
02:06It's well thought out plots, dramas
02:09The characters and the actors
02:12At least we're here 400 years from now
02:14And I think there's a kind of a hope and an optimism about that that's very attractive
02:18Excitement, adventure, challenge
02:20It's a great thing, you have fun
02:22Every television program all rolled into one
02:24It's an alternate reality
02:25These people like science and they like narrative
02:27And this combines both of them
02:28To discover what goes on behind the scenes of an event like this
02:32We spoke to one of the organizers
02:33Master of Ceremonies, Bob Benton
02:36Let's welcome both of mine
02:38Seven o'clock in the morning we're in
02:41Checking the schedules for the day
02:44And there have been many, many changes
02:47Good morning and happy Easter to you all
02:50This venue, I must say, is probably the best venue any Star Trek actor has performed at
02:55Here I am in this absolutely unfriendly setting here in the Royal Albert Hall
03:01They're nervous, even famous people, Avery, Brooks, all the rest of them
03:07Star Trek is celebrating our 30th birthday
03:11All I know is there are going to be 6,000 people here
03:14And I've never spoken to a crowd that large before
03:16I'm used to speaking to getting excited when there's 500 people
03:20Jeez, there's 500 people, how am I going to have time to talk to all these people?
03:22My girlfriend and I were sitting backstage
03:24And she said to me, are you nervous?
03:26Trying to calm her down?
03:27Of course not, I've done this before
03:28And completely lied to her
03:31And then when they'd come off after their hour
03:33I'd just get them a drink quick
03:35I'm hoping to see Bob Carter, the holographic doctor from Voyager again
03:39I thought it was really funny when I saw it yesterday
03:41Star Trek is the only phenomenon where a guy like me
03:44Who basically looks like a shoe salesman
03:47Could be treated like a rock star
03:49It's really an extraordinary, extraordinary experience
03:53I wanted to see Neely's Evan Phillips
03:56It's like doing a one-man show without a script
03:58And I tend to get a little bit nervous about what to say
04:02But they usually ask questions and that stimulates me
04:04And just sharing things that hopefully a lot of people haven't heard yet
04:06And telling the behind-the-scenes stories
04:08I mean, who wouldn't want to go into a room full of people
04:10Who are dying to listen to you speak?
04:12I always explain when I get asked the question
04:14Why I like inventions
04:16I say, you know, there's a whole enthusiastic crowd hanging on your every word
04:20I said, I live with three women who pay no attention to me
04:22So it's a delightful change in my life
04:24You folks here are the ones who have given us this gift
04:28Meanwhile, at the London Palais
04:31Preparations are underway for a party of cosmic proportions
04:34And the members of the energized Star Trek fan club not attending the convention
04:38Are using the pre-party time to transform themselves into alien life forms
04:43My friends and myself
04:46We used to just like to watch Star Trek
04:50Straightforward make-up job
04:51A very messy make-up job
04:53We then thought it might be good fun
04:55To dress up as a few aliens
04:57Nothing worse than hopefully a bit later chatting to Leonard Nimoy
05:00And whoops, half your face falls off
05:02It just sort of went on
05:04And trial and error
05:04What started as very minor aliens
05:07Who've got more and more complicated
05:09I've applied a very light foundation so that it could give fragility to the make-up
05:17Basically, Sue started all the make-up
05:20And I got really interested
05:21So I asked whether I could help
05:23This time I'm actually putting some hair wax on
05:26To stop it going up his nose
05:29So now it's the Vulcan
05:32Classic make-up
05:33Playing the famous years
05:35I have to take care of the configuration of the year as well
05:41I just have been reminded that I didn't wax that bit
05:45So no doubt it will go up his nose
05:48Back at the Royal Albert Hall
06:01Money and merchandise are frantically changing hands in the dealer's room
06:05It's definitely the premier weekend for reaching the kind of hardcore Star Trek fans
06:10And there's probably as many as, I don't know, 14,000 people here
06:14All with money they've kind of saved up for a while to come and spend
06:17I always think it's quite fun in the dealer's room
06:19Because you have about seven or eight stalls with the same item on it
06:24And I love going up and down the line
06:26Seeing which ones are cheapest
06:27And then going back up there and saying
06:28He's selling it cheaper than you
06:29Just to see if he puts it down
06:30I personally will only get stuff that is limited edition
06:32What we have actually that's very special
06:34Is a working tricorder
06:36Made by people who actually do lens work for NASA on the space shuttle
06:44And it's £279, believe it or not
06:48But what is the actual quality of the merchandise on sale?
06:51Can I help anyone else?
06:52It's good, but there's not enough hard memorabilia like from the shows
06:56There's no phases, no real costumes and signal or whatever
07:01Nothing you can really sort of, you know, with any history attached to the actual programme itself
07:06It's all stuff that's actually been created for the convention
07:10There we are, £2 please
07:11The other thing as well, there seems to be a lot of overheads being put on the memorabilia that is being sold
07:17I mean, you can actually go into, say for instance, the Forbidden Planet or any of the sci-fi shops
07:24And get memorabilia a lot cheaper
07:25The rollout is great for the main presentation
07:28And not quite so good for the space that's available for the dealers
07:31The cost for a table is quite expensive
07:33So I suppose you're going to have to make quite a lot of money to actually cover your costs with staff and stuff
07:39The side prints, they're good
07:40And some of the artists' work, some of the original work is very good as well
07:45Caught my eye
07:45The artist had an accident shortly after he finished the original
07:48And he died
07:49So Paramount couldn't get their hands on it because it was a proband
07:52Our company made a deal with the owners, who are obviously the family, to allow us to do only 100 of these prints
07:59However, with so many things to coordinate, it appears that it's only too easy for things to go wrong
08:04There are rumours going around that a limo isn't coming
08:07Mr. Spa
08:08And I'm really upset about it, and a lot of people are very upset about it
08:12I think the hardest part is getting the actors to commit
08:17Because you always sign all the actors up subject to their filming commitments
08:21I mean, I heard he's not sick, it's just some sort of theatre thing he has
08:26I mean, it's obvious logic
08:28If they suddenly get a deal worth three or four million to go and choose a film
08:32They'd rather do that than come and perform five and a half thousand for one hour in front of the Royal Albert Hall crowd
08:38I think you pay your money and you take the choice
08:41But in the main, most people are really enjoying this Star Trek convention
08:44It's generally been the best Star Trek recipes I've ever had, really
08:49It's the most exciting thing I've ever been to
08:51I don't know what to expect, but it's amazing
08:53I'm really impressed with it
08:55Robert Picardo yesterday was excellent
08:57George Decai we've just seen
08:58Very good
09:00Lots of people, it's all excellent, yeah
09:02The great thing is all the artists have very good stories and they're very funny
09:06And they make it kind of enjoyable for the audience
09:09I've really enjoyed it, I think it's excellent
09:11Both speakers so far have been very entertaining
09:14And so far we've only got to two stalls
09:16And we've stopped already, there's so much to look at
09:19It compares very well with other conventions
09:21Seems to be generating a lot of interest in Star Trek across the country
09:26A lot of news coverage, which is always good for the show
09:28It's the best thing I've ever spent money on, to be honest
09:31At the palais, the final preparations are being made
09:41And the staff are ready for an influx of 1,500 Star Trek fans queuing outside
09:46To see the stars
09:47And to meet friends
09:50And some other aliens are ready to invade
09:54This is a fight magnet
09:56I shall be fighting them all night long
09:59Despite some previously hostile encounters
10:02We've had a police car come past us three times
10:05Laughing their heads
10:07We crashed a cyclist once
10:08Poor chap was coming down the road
10:10Couldn't believe the people in Starfleet uniform
10:12Looking over shoulder
10:13Went straight into a wall
10:14I shall understand that you get quite a few different reactions
10:16People trying to look without seeming to be looking
10:19And then we get the experts
10:20The ones that come up to us and go
10:22You're from Star Wars, aren't you?
10:25What do you think of it?
10:27More?
10:27We haven't seen Star Trekking yet, but apart from that it's really good
10:40The convention was brilliant and the fight is loads of fun
10:50Great
10:51Real thrill when they came on stage
11:12Like, ah, I want to get them, I want to touch them
11:14It's easier to see how the fans feel about the stars
11:27But how do these fans compare to their American counterparts?
11:30They've been very, very warm and very appreciative
11:33I think the fact that we travel that much further to come here
11:38Makes it even more special for them
11:40So they've been extremely gracious in the warmth of their welcome
11:43They are very, um, as applauded as the fans in the States
11:49They're aware of what's going on on the show
11:51And I think maybe because they have to work harder to get the newer episodes
11:55Maybe they appreciate it more than the fans do in the States
11:57There are very on top of things
11:59You mentioned people's names, you say Michael Kuda or Rick Berman
12:02And people are beyond just the stars
12:04And they know the inner workings of the show
12:06So the caliber of the questions they ask is very intelligent
12:09And the final word from the Master of Ceremonies
12:12Any problems we'll look at and deal with the fair way
12:16And see where it goes
12:17It'll be bigger and better next year
12:18Sit around
12:23Oh, shit, can we you read
12:27Oh, sure can we get all this
12:29Oh, shit, what about the matter?
12:34What about the matter?
12:35A Sci-Fi Channel original production.
