00:00When it comes to chasing criminals...
00:03We've got a job on already.
00:05...two wheels...
00:06...are better than four.
00:09We are off roads.
00:11...where police cars have to stop...
00:13Can't stop that.
00:15...the biker cops keep going...
00:17He's driven across the fields.
00:19...and nowhere is off limits.
00:21He does have warning markers for...
00:23...wet-lit-space-ball-bound violence.
00:25Coming towards you now.
00:27...riding to catch suspects...
00:29...I'll carry on and do my job as I see fit.
00:31Is that all right?
00:32Book me then.
00:33I'll kill you.
00:34...racing to save lives.
00:36This lady's in and out of consciousness.
00:38...and we've got a ride on the...
00:40...this car versus bar bike.
00:42If it goes wrong...
00:44...if it goes wrong spectacularly.
00:47...they are the UK's fastest responders.
00:51What are you playing at?
00:52Stay there.
00:53The road moves right under arrest.
00:59Coming up.
01:00Hi Markham.
01:01What is the fraudster?
01:02A high-speed chase for a suspected fraudster.
01:05Fraud out.
01:06And the biker cops in pursuit both on...
01:09...doesn't get stopped.
01:10...and off-road.
01:11...an electric bike sailing to stop.
01:14We're allowed to chase them.
01:15We're allowed to sting them.
01:16We're allowed to push them off.
01:17Always eating Paddy.
01:18I've got a fast metabolism.
01:20Biker cop Paddy Green is preparing...
01:23...for a day in the saddle.
01:24Covering North Yorkshire's...
01:25...6,000 miles of road.
01:26Who puts cable tires on?
01:27We're allowed to push them off.
01:28Always eating Paddy.
01:29I've got a fast metabolism.
01:30Biker cop Paddy Green is preparing...
01:31...for a day in the saddle.
01:32Covering North Yorkshire's...
01:33...6,000 miles of road.
01:34Who puts cable tires on?
01:35And done't snipp the ends off?
01:36I've ridden motorbikes since I was a child.
01:37I grew up on a farm...
01:51...so I always had motorbikes knocking about.
01:53Maybe not what you'd call a classic motorcyclist.
01:56You know where they've got a lovely expensive motorbike...
01:57...that they'd take out on a weekend.
02:00Plus I've never had any brass.
02:03I've never had any brass, I've never had a nice motorbike.
02:06Yeah, that's mine.
02:07The thing with motorcycles is,
02:09no matter how sensible you are,
02:11you like motorcycles because they look nice
02:13and they're good fun to ride.
02:16You know, we're all cavemen, aren't we?
02:18And pre-historically, it was the ones
02:20that climbed the highest trees
02:21or crossed the biggest rivers that got some rewards,
02:23and I think that's still within us.
02:26We're not blind to the fact
02:28that people do enjoy riding motorcycles,
02:30because we all do,
02:31because it's good fun, isn't it?
02:51Paddy's on patrol, looking for illegal drivers.
02:56The visibility that you're afforded on the bike
02:58is much better than the car.
03:00Certainly for mobile phones and seatbelts,
03:03it is really good that you can see into vehicles well.
03:07Up ahead, Paddy spots the driver of a blue golf
03:11using his mobile phone.
03:12The majority of people that we deal with are perfectly reasonable people,
03:29and pull over and apologise at the first opportunity,
03:32so I ask him to pull over through the lights.
03:35But after another request,
03:48the driver speeds away.
03:50To be honest, I'm a bit surprised.
03:53You're only using your phone, why are you going off?
03:56It's generally criminals that fail to stop.
04:00I'm just going to be home,
04:01I'm sitting there, I'm just a bit of a pencil.
04:03With the driver's speed reaching 90 miles an hour...
04:06I'm just going to stop.
04:08...he see Chris Story races into position to help intercept the golf.
04:14Out of town.
04:15Yep, on PNC it is showing that that male is coming back as a disc-ball driver.
04:21The suspect is a repeat offender,
04:24previously convicted of multiple driving offences,
04:27including failing to stop for the police.
04:29It's a long way ahead of me now, it's out of town towards the bypass of Blue Bull.
04:39It's gone through road works,
04:41I believe it's collided with some road signs.
04:45I'm going to lose it at the roundabout, unfortunately, for a direction.
04:48I've got a single crew in a marked traffic car,
04:53T-PAT train, standby for the direction it comes.
04:57Paddy, I've gone left if you want to take out the straight on our right.
05:01During that pursuit phase,
05:04it is very dangerous to us,
05:07to the subjects being pursued,
05:09and more importantly to the members of the public involved.
05:13We don't have to put ourselves and the members of the public at that much risk
05:17for the sake of, I don't know, our pride or keeping up with something,
05:21because we're not idiots like they are,
05:24and we can look at the bigger picture.
05:26And use other methods to get hold of them.
05:33With the golf out of sight,
05:35an urgent 999 call comes in.
05:38Police control room, how can I help?
05:40Yeah, I've just walked through and bought an incident,
05:43it's just happened outside my house.
05:45The cars come absolutely flying up our street,
05:49and right at that end,
05:50two young lads have got out of the car,
05:52looking very shifty,
05:54locked the car,
05:55and then they've launched over the top of a neighbour's fence and run off.
05:59With a fresh sighting of the suspects,
06:02the race is on for Paddy to get there before they escape.
06:14Back at base.
06:15Also tracking criminals across North Yorkshire's vast road network is biker cop Paul Buckley.
06:24I can be deployed to anything.
06:26We could be sent to try and intercept a vehicle that's been involved in crime.
06:31Or if there's a wanted person,
06:33I could be sent to try and intercept to that with a bike.
06:37With hundreds of thousands of vehicles passing through Yorkshire every day,
06:41finding just one can be a challenge.
06:44As someone who likes bikes in and out of work,
06:47this bit is fantastic,
06:48and I've been prepared to ride a decent bike in decent weather,
06:52kind of golden ticket.
06:54We've got a job on already, it's 159.
06:59Can I take the vehicle registration number?
07:01We'll get some officers dispatched.
07:03We'll get the ANPR cameras checked.
07:075-7-8-7-30,
07:108-class in black.
07:11Climarket,
07:12wanted for fraud,
07:13Fetching.
07:14Yes, let's have a look.
07:19A vehicle linked to a woman wanted for an alleged fraud
07:22has triggered a police camera ten miles away.
07:28Paul's playing catch up.
07:32A motorcycle,
07:33it gives me some advantages to get places.
07:35A traffic camera has got the power,
07:37but it might be impeded by a traffic.
07:39A motorcycle can get there quicker.
07:42Reaching 0-60 in 3.4 seconds on his BMW R1250RT,
07:47Paul can quickly make up ground.
07:49If I don't see it, it already drives into another area,
07:50then the opportunity is lost.
07:51The team are relying on me to catch up with the vehicle.
07:52507, have you caught it yet?
07:53507, have you caught it yet?
07:54507, have you caught it yet?
07:56If I don't see it, it already drives into another area, then the opportunity is lost.
08:14The team are relying on me to catch up with the vehicle.
08:19Coming up, Paul's hitting top speed to catch a suspected fraudster, and Paddy's high-speed
08:47chase goes off-road.
08:51We need to do all we can to try and get them stopped and get them off the road.
09:08In North Yorkshire, biker cock Paddy Green is on patrol.
09:12After being caught using his mobile phone, a disqualified driver has failed to stop.
09:25To be honest, I'm a bit surprised.
09:27You're only using your phone, why are you going off?
09:30It's generally criminals that fail to stop.
09:37As the Blue Golf reaches speeds of up to 90 miles an hour, Paddy Green and a patrol car
09:43race to keep on.
09:44The Blue Golf is a repeat offender, and has been convicted of failing to stop previously.
10:01Paddy, I've gone left if you want to take out the street on our right.
10:09At police control, a 999 call comes in with a lead.
10:13The car's come absolutely flying up our street, and we're at a dead end.
10:17Two young lads have gone out of the car, looking very shifty, locked the car, and then they've
10:24launched over the top of a neighbour's fence and run off.
10:26There's a guy looking round now, looking shifty, looking at it.
10:30Grey trackies in a black jacket.
10:32Grey trackies in a black jacket.
10:33Whilst I've been on the phone to you, one of them has just looked around the corner to
10:36see.
10:37Paddy's racing to the scene to catch the suspects before they get away.
10:40They're still there, the windows are all wound down and everything.
10:47At the front of it, on the grill as well, it looks like it's hit something potentially.
10:50It goes like burning as well, and obviously they've been ragging it about.
10:55They've been ragging it quite a bit.
10:57The police and the motorbikes are turning up now, so we can tell them if that's easier,
11:02obviously.
11:03As Paddy arrives, the Blue Golf is abandoned in the road.
11:06They've gone into one of the houses.
11:07They've gone into one of these houses.
11:09One of these ones behind.
11:10Behind?
11:11I don't know which number it is.
11:12Why is it out?
11:15We're lucky in North Yorkshire that we've got such a good public, and I think a fairly
11:20good relationship with the general public.
11:22And we couldn't do a fraction of what we do without the public.
11:27The public ringing us up, the public helping us.
11:30Paddy, I can just about see the rear of the house from where I am.
11:34As long as it's the one on the gable end on the right-hand side, I've got it.
11:38While Paddy searches for the suspects, Chris Story arrives to talk to the residents.
11:44Hello, mate.
11:45So just describe to me what you've seen.
11:47What I've seen.
11:48So we were sat here having our lunch.
11:49Yeah.
11:50I had my back to the window.
11:51My wife said, oh, this car's come flying up here.
11:54Yeah.
11:55So I came out to have a look, and two youngest lads got out.
11:57Yeah.
11:58Just looked dodgy.
11:59And they've launched over that fence there.
12:01Right.
12:02The door of them.
12:03The next door neighbour there, she's got a ring with it on.
12:04She's got a ring doorbell on the back.
12:05She's actually got a video of them.
12:06Oh, perfect.
12:07Right.
12:08I'll go have a quick shot.
12:09Thank you very much.
12:10Hiya.
12:11Are we able to review your footage?
12:12Just for all bases we talk.
12:13Do you mind if it?
12:14Yeah.
12:15Sure.
12:16I'm just reviewing this footage now from the ring doorbell.
12:20It's from the rear guard.
12:21And I can only see the rear of the two persons that run through.
12:25But I can give you a description when you're ready.
12:28Having lost the suspects in the estate, Paddy returns to identify the driver.
12:33It's really good footage, actually.
12:34It's just the back of them now.
12:36This is your driver.
12:37First one's driver.
12:39Yeah.
12:40Yeah.
12:41You can do this job for a few years, and you can do it.
12:45You can get really excited about chasing people, and catching people, and upset about losing
12:51them.
12:52But the reality is, they always come again.
12:55Normally, there's more than one way to skin a cat.
12:58What are you going to do with that?
13:00I've all connected with the crew.
13:01Are you going to have it?
13:02Yeah, I've all connected with the crew.
13:04Sometimes getting the car's enough, because when a pursuit ends by the subject abandoning
13:09the vehicle, that's not a bad conclusion.
13:12You've removed that danger from the road.
13:15The car itself can be vital evidence.
13:18Yes, yes.
13:19It does have damage to the front bumper, consistent of having collided with some cones.
13:23Luckily, the driver had left some paperwork in the glove box with his name and address on
13:29it.
13:30I was able to compare that name to the CCTV footage that we'd obtained and look at him
13:37and invite him to the police station for a chat.
13:42He was charged with a number of offences, driving miles disqualified, no insurance, failing
13:47to stop, dangerous driving, and using his mobile phone.
13:57A few miles away near Harrogate.
14:00We've got a job on already.
14:02It's 159.
14:03Another pursuit is in progress.
14:06357.
14:09357.
14:10It's in the 30.
14:11They've been closed for the last.
14:12of the crime market.
14:13Wanted for fraud detention.
14:1537.
14:1637.
14:20Biker cop Paul Buckley is chasing a suspected fraudster after a hit on ANPR.
14:33Being on a bike, Paul's able to catch up quicker than a car, hitting over 120 miles an hour.
14:45And is the first to reach the suspect black Mercedes.
14:50We've got eyes on it.
14:52If it doesn't stop, then we want the contingency that we've got the road to play with.
14:57Without any members of the public getting tangled in it.
15:05Slow down.
15:07Paul holds the traffic back as more units close in on the wanted woman.
15:13Can the vehicle please stop? Don't be a conflict.
15:16Oh, please, thank you.
15:20All right.
15:26The reason we've stopped you is there's a marker on the car to say that the register keeper of this car is potentially wanted.
15:34Wanted for what?
15:35Geoff, you drive a nice little bit.
15:37Do you?
15:38You've lost it?
15:40Have you ever been in trouble with the police before?
15:42Not for a long time, like when I was younger.
15:50Control updates about the allegations.
15:54She goes around looking treatments, giving false information, they never pay for them.
15:58Fake to bank transfer, then on the day she was going to get a card and never return to bank retirement.
16:02All right.
16:04Yeah, received, thank you.
16:05Does she look like she's had lots of treatments?
16:07Er, yeah.
16:08Yeah.
16:09So she's going for the jossling and stuff, she's giving fake details.
16:15Possibly.
16:17There'll be thousands of pounds, won't there?
16:18As well as the alleged fraud, there's another problem.
16:23Is it a manual or auto car?
16:25Manual.
16:26You can only drive automatic cars on your driving licence.
16:28Is there?
16:29Yeah.
16:30What do you mean?
16:31I've had my licence for many years.
16:33Well, on here it says automatic only.
16:35You can't, yeah, you can't drive this car.
16:38Automatic transmissions only.
16:40The car would be impounded.
16:41She's not legal to drive this car.
16:43So, basically, that is, basically, potentially an endorseable offence to some points and a fine on a licence.
16:51With the woman detained and her car being seized.
16:55Ex-10, 20 traffic units monitoring the A64.
16:58We've just had a report of a suspect vehicle.
17:00Member of the public called in.
17:02Heading westbound towards your location.
17:06Paul's needed on another urgent call.
17:08Heading bikes from pretty much 14, 15.
17:24That's my bike, testing when I was 17.
17:28After 20 years in traffic, Rich Clark, or Clarky, has recently taken things up a gear.
17:34And moved from four to two wheels.
17:37The technology on the bikes now is just unbelievable.
17:41Clarky's at the start of a weekend shift.
17:44One of the busiest times for the biker cops.
17:49All good? Good to go?
17:52There's an emergency.
17:53Hello, you're 50, please?
17:56At police control, a report comes in about a dangerous driver.
18:00What was the vehicle that you sold?
18:01Is it a male driver, female driver?
18:03Male driver?
18:04We'll get officers on to that.
18:06Extentable traffic unit.
18:09We're just getting a report now.
18:10Vehicle all over the road.
18:12We've been between the lanes.
18:14Castle, OPL.
18:18As Rich races to find the car.
18:21Good to see you aware.
18:22Myself and 526 are out and about now.
18:24We'll be deployable together.
18:25PC Jack Doddsworth is not far behind us back on.
18:28A member of Publix rang us porting a vehicle all over the road on the dual carriageway.
18:32The occupants are all on the phones.
18:34They're doing balloons.
18:35I guess they're doing like gas as they're driving.
18:37It's almost glad to a central barrier a couple of times.
18:40We need to climb this car, get it stopped and establish issues in relation to intoxication.
18:475-3, we've got a positive sight in lane 2.
18:49Accelerating to over 100 miles per hour, biker cock Rich quickly gets behind the suspect's white VW Polo.
19:03What's planned mate?
19:04Are we going to see where it commits?
19:05We're going to see where it commits.
19:06We're going to see where it commits.
19:07We're going to see where it commits.
19:08Roger.
19:098-4.
19:10We're just trying to coax it across it.
19:11To hard shoulder.
19:12Lane 1, 1 to hard shoulder.
19:14It's a stop stop.
19:17Are you alright?
19:18Move over there, don't get rid of them, bod.
19:19Right.
19:20You got a car?
19:21Yeah.
19:22You got your licence on?
19:23Yeah, I got your licence on.
19:24Where you from?
19:33We're going to a festival.
19:38We're going to a festival.
19:39Let's get here, hop-y, hop-y, hop-y.
19:44Where are you from?
19:46We're going to a festival.
19:47Here?
19:48Leeds.
19:49That what is it?
19:50Min Festival it's called.
19:51Alright.
19:52Stay there.
19:53Right move.
19:54Alright.
19:57Are there any drugs, any balloons in the car?
19:59Any hit nitrous?
20:00There was.
20:01Was?
20:02No, no, no.
20:03Right.
20:04That was heckin' that.
20:06Right, it's cold is that?
20:08He's nearly collided twice with Central Red.
20:13So we're just making a phone call for the car.
20:16Are you 12?
20:17Yeah ma'am.
20:19We've got that.
20:20It's dead.
20:21No innit.
20:22Who's been doing that?
20:23Who's been doing that?
20:24Who's been doing gas?
20:25Oh, not me.
20:26Nah.
20:27Not me.
20:28Kill ya that shit.
20:29Who's been doing it?
20:31Just a bit of fun on the way, on the way down though.
20:34Kill ya.
20:35Anybody have a spoon release or no?
20:37There's another bottle there.
20:38Yeah empty.
20:39There's another bottle there.
20:40Magic innit?
20:41Any more?
20:42Boys?
20:43Any more gas in them footwells?
20:44Oh.
20:45Telling you to give them those.
20:46If I have to come and find another bottle I'm going to be pissed off.
20:51Driver, open that boot.
20:52Open your boot.
20:53Open your boot.
20:54Coming up.
20:55It's everywhere.
20:56The whole thing.
20:57It's everywhere.
20:58It's everywhere.
20:59It's everywhere.
21:00It's everywhere.
21:01It's everywhere.
21:02It's everywhere.
21:03It's everywhere.
21:04It's everywhere.
21:06It's everywhere.
21:07The call of drugs keeps coming.
21:08The boat's full of me.
21:10Oh, you're having a spiffing day, aren't you?
21:12The biker cops clamp down on riders breaking the law.
21:15I'll carry on and do my job as I see fit.
21:16Is that alright?
21:17Book me that.
21:18Electric bike.
21:19May it be stopped.
21:20And Paddy's in an off-road chase.
21:22Make sure they fail, sir.
21:23We are not here.
21:24In Yorkshire, on the A1, after a report of a dangerous driver on the motorway.
21:37Vehicle all over the road.
21:38We've been screened at the lane.
21:39Biker cop Rich Clark.
21:40And colleague Jack Doddsworth.
21:41Five-three, we've got a positive side of your lane, too.
21:42Are dealing with a suspected drug driver.
21:44Any more gas in them foot wells?
21:45If I have to come and find another bottle.
21:46Driver, open that boot.
21:47The boot's full of it.
21:48Kill you.
21:49That's what it is.
21:50It's everywhere.
21:51Totally unacceptable.
21:52We're not having that.
21:53Anything else?
21:54No.
21:55No.
21:56No.

22:50that they've seen him nearly at the central reservation twice.
22:54Nearly had two collisions, so that shows that his driving's impaired.
22:57So as a result of that, we can arrest him on suspicion of being unfit through a substance.
23:04So just going to roll up for that.
23:0612.40, placing you under arrest on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through a substance.
23:12OK?
23:13We suspect that you've got nitrous oxide in your blood.
23:16Take it to the police station, take the blood sample out of you, alright?
23:19I'd like to put these on you, mate.
23:21Yeah, we spoke the weekend, but that stuff will kill him.
23:24The driver's being taken to custody, but his friends will have to find their own way home.
23:34I've got an Uber.
23:35Yeah, probably.
23:36It's only a week out, isn't it?
23:37Come on, mate.
23:38Right, sit in here, love.
23:41Take a seat.
23:42The medical examination has said his pupils are absolutely massive
23:46and his eyes are not reacting normally.
23:48Therefore, bloods will be the definitive.
23:51What exactly is in there?
23:56The driver now faces an anxious wait before he knows his fate.
24:00Thank you, mate.
24:01As the results from the blood test will take months.
24:03Still aching after last week.
24:10A little bit, a little bit.
24:15With the weekends a peak time for crashes involving motorcyclists,
24:19the biker cops are clamping down on risk-taking riders.
24:23Right.
24:24Project Apex, you're all aware of, national campaign for motorcyclists
24:28due to the number of serious collision and fatals we have with motorcyclists.
24:32So there's six bikes out today.
24:36Right, let's get out there and do it.
24:43PC Martin Hayes is one of six biker cops
24:46tasked with policing North Yorkshire's 3,000 square miles.
24:50I think the bike thing started when I was six, seven.
24:53Every time I saw a bike I wanted to ride on.
24:56Martin's ridden police spec motorbikes like the BMW R1250RT for over 12 years.
25:03It's very quick.
25:04It'll reach some fairly substantial speeds where it's safe to do so.
25:07It's the closest you'll get to flying without sticking wings on.
25:12We'll head out up into some of the more popular biking routes.
25:15Motorcyclists riding in an anti-social, irresponsible manner,
25:21doing something that might present a danger to other motorcyclists.
25:25Project Apex runs across England
25:27and is not only about enforcement
25:29but also engages with bikers helping them improve their riding.
25:34Most people are very well behaved, ride responsibly
25:36but there's always a small minority of people that ride in an irresponsible manner.
25:40With some of the UK's most scenic roads,
25:43North Yorkshire is a mecca for bikers.
25:46But some take potentially life-threatening risks
25:49and use unreadable illegal number plates to avoid being caught.
25:54With a number of motorcycle fatalities in the county last year,
25:58Project Apex also aims to make drivers more aware of how vulnerable bikers are.
26:03As the officers spread out across the Yorkshire Dales,
26:09it's not long before Martin spots a group of riders.
26:13They're leaving the petrol station.
26:15I can see that some of the number plates are clearly smaller than they should be.
26:19It's very, very different pursuing something on a bike to in a car.
26:33You have to think very, very carefully about where you position yourself.
26:37You have to consider whether or not it's going to stop compliantly
26:41or if it's going to try and knock you off.
26:47Those bikes are probably only five or six cars in front of me.
26:52Around the next series of bends, they're a significant distance ahead.
26:56So they've clearly overtaken quite a few vehicles
27:00with stuff coming towards them in the opposite direction.
27:02I can see the road winding away and a line of traffic in both directions.
27:11They might be riding in a fairly competitive manner.
27:14A manner that's a little bit too fast for the volume of traffic that's on the road.
27:18So I want to speak to these people.
27:32Right, Rigging have been stopped. A manner of riding.
27:45And your last overtake that you did.
27:47You're going in between other cars.
27:48Right, but I'm making progress.
27:51Yeah, there's making progress.
27:52And there's making itself for the meat and the sandwich between two lumps and metal.
27:55No. Right.
27:56A manner of riding, were perfectly fine.
27:59Right. Well, we'll take a different on that.
28:02Oh, you're having a spiffing day, aren't you?
28:05Why the attitude, sir?
28:07Because you're accusing me of riding battery.
28:11So your driving licence, please?
28:12I ain't got it.
28:13The actual requirement...
28:14I don't have to carry my driving licence.
28:15The legal requirement is you produce it to me on request at the roadside, however...
28:19Book me, then, because I ain't got it.
28:22Just calm down a second.
28:24I don't have my driving licence.
28:26That's fine. If you let me explain,
28:28you should be able to produce it on request.
28:30Because you can't, we give you seven days to do so.
28:33Small number plate.
28:34Yes, I don't need to know. I know it's not the right size.
28:38So why is it on there, then?
28:39Because I like it.
28:41Right. And the legal requirement is that it should be how big?
28:44I don't know.
28:45It's bigger than that.
28:47OK, so it's not big enough. My apologies.
28:50People put on a small number plate for various reasons.
28:53You've got that small group of people who put them on
28:55because by having a small number plate, it's very difficult for us to read it.
28:58And at the speeds at which they're prepared to ride at,
29:01it's very, very difficult to read it.
29:03Even to the point that some people will fit them on a bracket that can move.
29:06We don't need to take a picture. We can all see that they've done it.
29:10I'll carry on and do my job as I see fit. Is that all right?
29:12Oh yeah. All right, boss.
29:14You know what really annoys me?
29:15When my next door neighbour has his motorbike nicked
29:17and then you see old plants riding around on the back wheel with no helmet on.
29:21And I'm getting done for my number plate.
29:23That's what really annoys me.
29:24So you don't have to say anything, but it may harm in defence if we don't mention I'm questioned.
29:27Sometimes it's a little reliant in court and industry to do say maybe we're giving evidence.
29:30Do you understand that?
29:32So we stopped. We'll have a chat.
29:34But you didn't seem to want to take any advice.
29:38All I would do was make some progress before rain comes this way.
29:44Now I didn't think I were doing anything wrong.
29:46He did a couple of overtakes where he's put himself in between oncoming cars.
29:52Moments in its entrance in one of those cars and you're going to get squashed.
30:01That's what we have to deal with.
30:03I'd have to show you the driving licence.
30:05Actually you do.
30:07Yeah.
30:16After recent chases with electric bikes going off road, the biker cops have taken delivery of a new weapon in the battle against risky riders.
30:37This electric police spec e-dirt bike can go from 0 to 30 in less than 2 seconds.
30:47And could help the officers keep the pressure on the suspects off road.
30:56Because it isn't generally just people riding them unlicensed.
30:59It's people using them in the commission of offences.
31:03So the beauty of having that, it gives us an idea of the capabilities.
31:10It's a cracking bit of kit.
31:12It's quite powerful and, yeah, manoeuvrable.
31:17So, yeah, that was, that was...
31:19Well, it's good fun, actually.
31:24In York, Paddy's looking out for young bikers breaking the law.
31:29It's a 125, isn't it?
31:30Yeah, it is, yeah.
31:32Are you angry? Are your driving licence on you?
31:33Yeah, no, it's quite professional, isn't it?
31:35Something about it's house.
31:37Right, all right, get an help plate as well.
31:38Yeah, yeah, sound nice.
31:39All right, see you later on.
31:41We've got a thing that we call the code of ethics.
31:47And that's at the centre of everything that we do.
31:51And it was once described to me is what your nan would expect you to do as a police officer.
31:57And that's always stuck with me.
31:58And if I see somebody riding illegally, I'm going to try and stop it because that's what your nan would expect you to do.
32:07As he cruises the streets, another young biker catches Paddy's eye.
32:12In front of me I see an electric motorbike turning onto one of the housing estates.
32:31So I followed it onto the estate, the riders, the youth, no helmet on.
32:35I had an electric electric motorbike sale-in to stop at Chapelfield.
32:46All right, monitor.
32:49Unlike the patrol cars, when a pursuit goes off-road,
32:54being a biker Paddy can keep going.
33:05The suspect's e-bike can reach up to 75 miles an hour.
33:14A potentially lethal speed cutting through estates and parkland.
33:25Coming up...
33:30Paddy's off-road chase escalates.
33:32We're allowed to chase them. We're allowed to sting them.
33:35We're allowed to push them off.
33:37And Paul Buckley chases after another disqualified driver.
33:41Like a big dog.
33:43Suspected of driving on drugs.
33:45If he was just positive for cocaine or cannabis, then he will be arrested.
34:02I don't know if you've had an electric bike failing to stop in Chapelfield.
34:08I don't know if you've monitored.
34:11In York, biker cock Paddy Green is chasing a young biker with no helmet who has failed to stop.
34:17They're really quick, these electric mounts, I've called.
34:21And they're quite capable, especially off-road.
34:24And they're really scared to get out of there.
34:25And they're very petitNG, too.
34:26Who do you think that's just doing a wild thing?
34:27You're like that.
34:28They're too old.
34:30You're like a wild thing.
34:31And this is a wild thing.
34:32And, you know, you're kind of seeing how the The Hale .
34:33That's the road.
34:34And the road is connected to the feet, you know, it'll take a test, you know?
34:35He's a really little bit older.
34:36As is sort of typical in these situations,
34:50situations. The lad goes off-road through a little gap in a hedge, across some parkland.
35:05We do have issues of anti-social use of murpeds, motorbikes, electric motorbikes, quadbikes.
35:20These youths riding these things illegally on our streets are a scourge and they're often linked to more than just kids
35:40lacking about on electric motorbikes, the link to criminality.
35:44Where's it come out?
35:50It is, it's a visual loss. Member of the public's pointed in its general direction. We are off-road.
35:56I lit it up and it disappeared straight away off-road, heading towards Foxwood Lane.
36:01Let's just see, what nature of PPE does it like to have on?
36:07Tacks of bottoms.
36:11No helmet or anything of the like?
36:13Negative.
36:15What kind of speed are you doing?
36:19It was 2-0, we're off-road so it's barely in.
36:24Electric motorbikes are increasingly being used for crime and anti-social behaviour.
36:29From the public's perspective, they've had enough of them.
36:33And I know that the impact that these kids have on the residents.
36:38So I know that the public expect me to get older.
36:43We're allowed to chase them, we're allowed to sting them, we're allowed to push them off,
36:47we're allowed to knock them off.
36:48But sometimes the risks outweigh the reward.
36:52Is there a bike come past here?
36:54I don't know.
36:55Eh?
36:56A bike come past?
36:57No.
36:59Paddy aborts the chase, as the rider has escaped for now.
37:04Frustrated.
37:06Yeah, but frustrated.
37:07You know, you don't know whether the kids using them or using them just for fun,
37:10or whether it's in the commission of any other offences.
37:13And we don't know that until we stop them.
37:15By the time I got behind her, he'd gone off-road.
37:17So we need to do all we can to try and get them stopped and get them off the road.
37:22Or field.
37:24Have you got rid of all the foliage?
37:30They'll come again. They'll always come again.
37:32Extent all traffic units.
37:43Qualify driver.
37:47It's a very reliable sighting you can make towards.
37:49Yeah, receive.
37:5150 miles away.
37:54I'll pass you details shortly.
37:56OK.
37:58Biker cock Paul is responding to a call about a wanted driver.
38:04We're on an operation covering the northeast coast to deal with criminality.
38:09There's been a sighting of a vehicle where it's got intelligence linked to someone we believe to be a band driver,
38:19but also has an history of substance abuse, basically drug driving.
38:24So they look out for a little white centering fan.
38:28A colleague in a patrol car is also racing to the area.
38:31The APR here is a little bit of a distance away.
38:34It is heading away from us.
38:35So we have to make some road race if we want to catch you.
38:39Thanks, please stop.
38:41I'm going to please go to cycle.
38:42With the ability of me, I've had to go fairly quick and cut through traffic.
38:46But I think I can catch this bloke up.
38:50Good morning, sir.
38:51Morning, sir.
38:53Yes, sir.
38:54With the suspect 15 miles away, Paul races to catch up.
38:59I'm 40, yeah.
39:00They're around the middle of the way, but it wasn't that one.
39:01Biker just passed me.
39:02What's happening?
39:04Next in 12 units, there's been a sighting of this vehicle.
39:09A patrol car is tailing the suspect nearby.
39:13We're down the hill.
39:15It's about probably three or four mile route.
39:17Yeah, mate, you're literally a minute behind me and we have to be up the door side now.
39:20What I'll do is I'll come in close to you then with bikes and report us.
39:26I have managed to catch up this vehicle from being assisted by the traffic car and I've come in behind him so the pair of us can deal with him.
39:33Just for safety, mate, I'm just going to grab the keys, alright?
39:34We've stopped you because we believe that your driving documents might not be in order for this vehicle.
39:46We believe that there might be an issue with your licence, like your potentially disqualified driver.
39:50Alright?
39:51Do you have any proof of that you've got a valid licence now?
39:52Not on me right now.
39:53The driver claims he does have a valid licence.
39:54Just wait for your cheque to come back to me.
39:55I'd like to ring the missus to tell him to have my tea on this one.
39:56Are you going to be later, yeah?
39:57Yeah.
39:58Alright, okay.
39:59He's making out that he's since done something to get his driving licence back. However, I very much doubt that account. I think it'll be an account just to put us off the scent.
40:06Looking at his to yell, he appears to be recorded as a disqualified until test passed.
40:29The intelligence report, so far it's tying up that it is this driver and it's showing he's disqualified.
40:35Furthermore, insurance checks. At the moment they're showing that it's just a female that's insured for this vehicle.
40:41So it'll be reported for disqualified driving and driving with no insurance and we'll be seizing this van.
40:45We haven't organised recovery yet, have we?
40:47Alright, but we can do it.
40:48Yeah, I'll put it through.
40:50Can you create me a seizure log, please?
40:52Disco driving and no insurance.
40:54No insurance. Do you want recovery?
40:57Yes, please, and Reg, when you're ready.
40:59As there's intel alleging the driver uses drugs, he's tested for cannabis and cocaine.
41:04Er, just, er, don't have to reply message with him now, so I'm just waiting for the result of that,
41:09because that's going to obviously dictate what happens next.
41:11If he fails it, then obviously it's just because he is next, so...
41:14This driver might be under the influence of something.
41:17If he's just positive for cocaine or cannabis, then he will be arrested.
41:21Er, yeah.
41:23There's two lines, right? One there, one there.
41:27Right, on the cocaine bit, there's the traces on the test line of cocaine, alright?
41:33It suggests that there is cocaine in your system.
41:35At this moment in time, you are under arrest on suspicion of driving whilst over a specified limit for cocaine.
41:40Could we have a van to this location, please? Er, he's tested positive for cocaine at the real time.
41:45Drink and drugs don't mix with driving, but people still continue doing it.
41:50We're going to get a van down here to transport you to a scarlet custody.
41:54He'll be taken to custody, where a blood sample will be obtained.
41:57The previous disqualification is a result of driving whilst over a prescribed limit.
42:01So, if he's done it again, so he's continued to drive, left disqualified and over the limit again,
42:07that could result in possible incarceration.
42:09Like, personal effects, like, just back on your wallet and that.
42:12You just want to stay on your nurse, mate.
42:13This gentleman, who's driving potentially with drugs in his system, will be off the road.
42:17He won't be affecting anybody.
42:19So, yeah, a satisfying day. Go on, mate.
42:22So...
42:24Prest, we'll get off.
42:28Good job, wasn't it?
42:29It's all right.
42:37One of the biggest challenges on the road is that you've got a mix of road users all out at the same time,
42:42and you're much more vulnerable on a bike.
42:44People don't expect to see police by the experience without the ability to catch people in the act
42:48without giving the game away.
42:50We can be dealing with travelling criminals, traffic offences, crashes, or something completely random.
42:58We've got a real mix of demands on the policing, which is both unique and really rewarding for us.
43:04The Golf driver was convicted of dangerous and disqualified driving using a mobile phone and no insurance.
43:17He was jailed for 11 months and given a 17-month driving ban.
43:21His passenger was released without charge.
43:23No action was taken against the female suspected of fraud offences, but she was reported for driving without a licence,
43:33and is also under investigation under suspicion of assault and theft.
43:37The driver of the white polo pleaded guilty at court to drug driving.
43:43He was banned from the roads for 18 months and received a community order.
43:47The biker whose number plate was illegal was fined £100, but no further action was taken.
43:59The rider of the electric motorbike who sped away off-road has not yet been identified.
44:04Inquiries are ongoing.
44:09And the disqualified driver who failed a roadside drugs test for cocaine and cannabis,
44:14was given a community order and drugs rehabilitation.
