00:00I moved to an old house in Birmingham, England back in 1986 with my mum, dad, and my sister.
00:14I was only five at the time, and my sister had just turned one.
00:18The house was quite old, and built sometime in the 1920s, I think.
00:22It was one of those houses that's joined to another house on one side.
00:25Our street was really nice, with big trees everywhere that made it feel quiet and peaceful.
00:32Being so little, I can't remember loads about those early days.
00:36But one thing I do remember clearly is having these two imaginary friends.
00:41I called them Ida and Udamanawi.
00:44Honestly, I have no clue where on earth I came up with those names.
00:49They weren't your typical kids' imaginary friend names like Sarah or Tracy or anything normal like that.
00:55The house felt huge to me back then, probably because I was so small.
01:00There were lots of rooms to explore, and I remember spending hours playing with Ida and Udamanawi,
01:06having proper conversations with them like they were really there.
01:10Mum told me I used to play with them mostly up in the loft and down in the laundry room.
01:14Then after a few years, Ida and Udamanawi just weren't there anymore.
01:19They disappeared.
01:21I guess that's pretty normal, though.
01:23Lots of kids have pretend friends when they're little.
01:27I was quite a quiet kid who liked playing alone anyway.
01:30But thinking about those strange names now still gives me the shivers a bit.
01:35A few years went by, and when I was about 9 or 10, weird things started happening to me at night.
01:41I'd be having a dream, then suddenly I'd wake up.
01:45But even though I was awake, I couldn't move my body at all.
01:48It felt like someone heavy was sitting on top of me, holding me down.
01:53I'd be so scared, but I just couldn't move anything.
01:56Not my arms, not my legs.
01:59Nothing.
02:00This scary thing kept happening to me for about two years.
02:04It was really frightening every time it happened.
02:07Then strange things started happening with our TV, and the old record player in the living room.
02:12We also had this tall lamp.
02:16They would all turn on and off by themselves, but not all together.
02:21It would happen quietly, one at a time, and only when I was alone in the room.
02:27When I told people about it, no one believed me.
02:31Everyone said I was just making things up and that I had too much imagination.
02:35After that, I started seeing dark shapes moving around.
02:39There was this one corner of the living room that always felt really scary and gave me the creeps.
02:46Something just felt wrong about that spot.
02:49When I got to about 11 or 12 years old, that's when the really scary stuff started happening in earnest.
02:56Most of it was centered around my bedroom, which was the smallest one in the house.
03:02I'd ended up with that room because my little sister got the bigger one.
03:05But looking back, maybe I got the raw deal for more reasons than just size.
03:12My bedroom was right at the back of the house, and when I looked out my window, I could see our whole long garden stretching out.
03:20Right in the middle stood this gorgeous old cherry tree that would bloom pink every spring.
03:25At the very bottom of the garden, almost hidden by all the greenery, was this old concrete air raid shelter left over from the Second World War.
03:32What I didn't know at the time was that my bedroom was apparently the creepiest room in the entire house.
03:38Mom only admitted this to me years later after we'd moved out.
03:42She said she'd always gotten weird vibes from that room but hadn't wanted to worry me.
03:47The thing that really got to me was what kept happening with my belongings.
03:51I was quite an organized kid.
03:54Everything had its place, you know.
03:56Every single night before bed, I'd do my little routine of putting everything exactly where it belonged.
04:03But morning after morning, I'd wake up and find my stuff had been moved around.
04:08Not dramatically.
04:09It wasn't like everything was thrown about the room or anything.
04:13But my hairbrush might be on the windowsill instead of the dressing table.
04:17Or the remote would be on the floor by the door.
04:20Small moves.
04:21But definitely not where I'd left them.
04:24It happened so often that I started to doubt myself.
04:28Wondering if I was just forgetting where I'd put things.
04:31But deep down, I knew something wasn't right.
04:35I kept hearing rustling noises coming from one corner of my bedroom.
04:39It happened all the time.
04:41I'd get up to check what it was.
04:44But there was never anything there.
04:45I always felt like someone else was in the room with me, even when I knew I was alone.
04:52As I got older, the scary things got even worse.
04:56My bedroom door would slowly close by itself during the night.
05:00This really freaked me out because I never closed my door.
05:04It made me too nervous to sleep with it shut.
05:06Plus, it was one of those heavy doors that you had to pull really hard because it dragged on the carpet.
05:13There's no way it could just close on its own.
05:16Then something even scarier started happening.
05:19My duvet would get slowly pulled off me while I was sleeping.
05:23This happened so many times that I started thinking I was losing my mind.
05:28But one night, I decided to test it.
05:29I pinched myself to make sure I was really awake.
05:34Then I put my hands flat on top of my duvet cover, right on my chest.
05:39I felt the duvet being pulled away from under my hands.
05:43It was definitely really happening.
05:45I wasn't imagining it.
05:47We didn't have any pets that could have done it.
05:50And it wasn't my little sister playing tricks on me either.
05:53She just wasn't that type of kid to do something like that.
05:56The TV in my room would turn on and off by itself too, even when the remote was nowhere near me.
06:03I had this old desk with a lid that you pulled down to write on.
06:07It was really stiff and hard to move.
06:09You had to give it a proper pull to get it open or closed.
06:12But sometimes, it would just slam down on its own for no reason at all.
06:18Loads more strange things happened that I can't even remember everything now.
06:22But one night, things got really weird.
06:24I was a teenager by then.
06:27So this was sometime in the mid-1990s.
06:30There was a big storm outside.
06:32And it was about one in the morning when I woke up to this massive bang.
06:36It sounded exactly like a whole pile of books had fallen off a bookshelf.
06:40Really loud.
06:42The noise was so loud, it woke up my mom and dad too.
06:45They thought the sound had come from my sister's room.
06:48So they got up and went to check on her.
06:51But when they looked, there was nothing wrong.
06:53No books on the floor.
06:55Nothing out of place.
06:57They just went back to bed after that.
07:00Then the loft hatch suddenly flew open.
07:03This was one of those heavy hatches that you needed to push up with a long stick to open.
07:08It didn't just open by itself.
07:09The bang woke my parents up again.
07:13They got out of bed and checked the whole house, but couldn't find anything wrong.
07:18Because it was such a stormy night, they just thought maybe the wind had somehow done it.
07:22But then a third thing happened.
07:25By this time, I was wide awake and really scared.
07:28The smoke alarm downstairs suddenly started going off for no reason at all.
07:31There was no smoke, no fire, nothing burning.
07:37It just started beeping loudly in the middle of the night.
07:40Really strange.
07:42When I turned 18, I moved away to go to university.
07:47Around that time, my parents started sleeping in separate bedrooms.
07:51So mom ended up sleeping in my old room.
07:53For years and years, everyone had told me that all the scary stuff was just in my head.
07:59That I was making it up, or imagining things.
08:03The only time they believed me was that stormy night when they heard and saw things too.
08:09But years later, mom finally told me the truth.
08:13She admitted that she got a really creepy, uneasy feeling when she slept in my old bedroom.
08:18Just like me, she couldn't bear to sleep with the door closed.
08:21It made her too nervous.
08:23She said the room just creeped her out completely.
08:27So I wasn't going mad after all.
08:29She'd felt exactly the same things I had.
08:32But nobody had believed me when I was a kid.
08:36There's more strange stuff that happened that I haven't even mentioned.
08:40But that's basically the whole story.
08:42It was definitely a haunted house.
08:45And I'm glad we eventually moved out of there.
08:47Weird stuff has been happening to me my whole life.
08:55Ever since I was a little kid.
08:57But there was this one night that still gives me chills when I think about it.
09:01It was just so strange and creepy.
09:03Like nothing I'd ever experienced before.
09:07Now I've always had this weird feeling.
09:09Like something from another world is trying to pull me somewhere.
09:11It's hard to explain.
09:14But it's always there in the background.
09:17Maybe it started because I was the kind of kid who would sneak downstairs and watch scary movies way past my bedtime.
09:23My parents had no idea I was sitting there in the living room at 2am.
09:28Watching horror films in complete darkness.
09:31Just me and whatever monsters were on the TV screen.
09:35I guess the darkness never really bothered me that much.
09:39I always figured if there was something bad out there, there was something good watching over me too.
09:45Still, that one night was different.
09:48It made me question everything I thought I knew about what's really out there.
09:52But maybe it changed how I think about what darkness really brings with it.
09:57It was one of those perfect summer days.
09:59Warm, but not too hot.
10:01With this nice cool breeze coming through my bedroom window.
10:05I remember just throwing myself onto my bed around noon.
10:09I honestly can't pinpoint when I drifted off to sleep.
10:13One minute I was laughing at Dexter yelling at his sister.
10:16And the next thing I knew, it was morning.
10:19That's the weird part though.
10:20I'm usually such a light sleeper that even my neighbor's dog barking or a car door slamming outside will wake me up instantly.
10:27But that night, I slept like I was knocked out cold.
10:31When I finally opened my eyes the next morning and looked around my room,
10:35I noticed something that made my stomach drop.
10:38Something that definitely wasn't there when I fell asleep.
10:40When I sat up and looked around, my bedsheet was lying on the floor in the exact same position it had been covering me.
10:48I mean exactly the same.
10:50It was stretched out perfectly flat.
10:53Not a single wrinkle anywhere.
10:55Like someone had carefully placed it there with a ruler.
10:57At first I thought maybe it just slid off during the night, because I moved around or something.
11:04I mean that would make sense, right?
11:06Even though I've never really been one of those people who thrashes around in their sleep.
11:10My mom always used to joke that I slept like a statue.
11:13But then I really looked at where it was.
11:16And that's when it got seriously weird.
11:18The blanket wasn't just on the floor next to my bed, where it would naturally fall.
11:23It was on the complete opposite side of my bed.
11:26All the way over by my headboard, right where I put my head on the pillow.
11:31How does a blanket travel from covering your feet to the other end of the bed, without waking you up?
11:36I immediately went downstairs and started questioning everyone.
11:40Did you come in my room last night?
11:43Did you hear anything weird?
11:45Was anyone walking around upstairs?
11:48Everyone looked at me like I was losing it.
11:51Nobody had been awake.
11:52The house had been dead quiet all night.
11:55After two or three days went by, I basically shrugged it off and tried to forget about the whole thing.
12:01You know how it is.
12:02Weird stuff happens.
12:04You can't explain it.
12:05So you just move on with your life.
12:08But this next night?
12:10This is the one that's burned into my memory forever.
12:13I swear I will never, ever forget what happened.
12:16It's been years now.
12:18And I can still picture every single detail, like it just happened yesterday.
12:22So my whole family had already crashed.
12:26I could hear my dad snoring from down the hall.
12:29And the house had that quiet, settled feeling it gets when everyone's deep asleep.
12:33I thought I was sleeping too.
12:36At least, I must have been at some point.
12:39Because I remember being in that weird, in-between state where you're not sure if you're awake or dreaming.
12:45I have no idea what time it was when it happened.
12:48I didn't even have a chance to look at my clock or think about anything else.
12:53Because everything happened so fast.
12:56Our bedroom had this mirror mounted on the wall right next to the bathroom door.
13:00It was one of those basic rectangular mirrors.
13:03Nothing fancy, but it reflected most of the room from where it hung.
13:06That night, my eyes just shot open out of absolutely nowhere.
13:12I had been completely dead to the world.
13:15You know that deep, heavy sleep where you're not even dreaming.
13:19One second I was out cold, and the next second I was wide awake,
13:23heart already starting to race for no reason I could understand.
13:27That's when I saw it.
13:29Right there, moving across the space between my bed and the wall,
13:32was this massive black shadow.
13:35It wasn't like a regular shadow cast by something in the room.
13:39This thing had its own presence, its own shape.
13:43At first, it was moving in this weird slow motion,
13:45like it was gliding through thick water or something.
13:49I could make out what looked like the outline of a person,
13:52but bigger, darker, more solid than any shadow should be.
13:57I'm lying there frozen, not even breathing,
14:00just watching this thing move toward the mirror on the wall.
14:04And then, I swear this is the part that still gives me chills.
14:09It was like the shadow suddenly realized I was awake and watching.
14:12In that instant, it moved lightning fast,
14:16and just disappeared straight into the mirror.
14:19Every instinct I had was screaming at me to get up,
14:21to turn on the lights,
14:23to go check that mirror and make sure I wasn't losing my mind.
14:27I tried to sit up, tried to move my arms,
14:30but it was like some invisible force was pushing down on me.
14:34My eyelids started feeling like they weighed a thousand pounds.
14:37I fought it as hard as I could,
14:41but within seconds,
14:42I was pulled back into the deepest sleep I'd ever experienced.
14:46When I finally woke up the next morning,
14:48the sun was already high in the sky,
14:50way later than I usually sleep.
14:53For a few minutes,
14:54I just lay there thinking
14:55it had to have been the most vivid,
14:58realistic nightmare of my life.
15:01But deep down,
15:02I knew the truth.
15:03Dreams don't feel that real.
15:06Dreams don't leave you with that cold,
15:08unsettling feeling in your gut
15:09that stays with you all day.
15:19This happened about three weeks ago,
15:22and I still can't get it out of my head.
15:25So every night around nine,
15:27I go for these walks in the woods behind my house.
15:29It's literally like a five-minute walk from my back door,
15:33and honestly,
15:35nothing weird ever happens there.
15:37It's just this quiet forest area
15:39that most people don't even know about.
15:41I always take the exact same route
15:43because I'm lazy like that.
15:45There's this paved bike path
15:47that winds through the trees
15:48and leads to this old wooden bridge over a creek.
15:51It's actually really peaceful,
15:53which is why I love going there
15:55to clear my head after work.
15:57So anyway,
15:58I had my headphones in like I always do,
16:01probably listening to some podcast or whatever,
16:03just doing my usual walk
16:05and not really paying attention to anything.
16:08That's when I looked up
16:09and saw these two people on horses
16:10coming straight toward me on the path.
16:13I remember thinking it was weird
16:15because I'd never seen anyone on horses there before,
16:18not once in all the times I've walked that route.
16:21It wasn't really weird by itself
16:23because there's actually a horse riding school
16:26maybe like half a mile down the road,
16:27so seeing people on horses isn't totally crazy.
16:32But the way they looked at me was just off.
16:35Not mean or anything that would make me scared,
16:38but more like they were trying to warn me about something.
16:40I don't know how to explain it exactly.
16:44Like when someone gives you that look that says,
16:47maybe you shouldn't go that way.
16:49But they don't actually say anything.
16:52Anyway,
16:53I just shrugged it off and kept walking with my music on.
16:56Maybe five minutes later,
16:57I hear this bike coming up behind me.
17:00Some kid,
17:01probably like 12 or 13 years old,
17:03riding one of those mountain bikes.
17:04He passes me pretty quickly,
17:07and I watch him continue down the path ahead of me.
17:10That's when things got really strange.
17:13I could see him in the distance when he reached this guy
17:15who was just standing there on the path.
17:18I couldn't hear what they said because of my headphones,
17:20but they talked for maybe 10 seconds at most.
17:23Then suddenly the kid just whipped his bike around
17:26and started pedaling back toward me as fast as he could.
17:31Like he was in a hurry to get out of there.
17:33I still didn't think much about it at first.
17:36Maybe the kid was just doing laps or practicing tricks or something.
17:40Kids do weird stuff like that all the time, right?
17:43But then I got close enough to actually see this guy the kid had been talking to.
17:47And I'm not even kidding when I say
17:49I have never seen anything so bizarre in my entire life.
17:51This dude looked like he was maybe 30,
17:55maybe a little older,
17:56and he was dressed up like some kind of clown.
17:59But not like a normal party clown or anything.
18:02It was more like someone who had just thrown together
18:04the weirdest outfit they could find.
18:07He was wearing this cheap-looking rainbow wig
18:09that was all messy and crooked,
18:11and these enormous novelty glasses.
18:14Like Groucho Marx glasses, but without the mustache.
18:17They made his eyes look huge and distorted,
18:20which was honestly pretty unsettling.
18:22But here's the part that really freaked me out.
18:25He was wearing wooden clogs.
18:27Like actual traditional wooden shoes
18:29that you'd see in old pictures of Dutch people.
18:33Every single step he took made this loud clack sound
18:35that echoed through the woods.
18:37I could literally hear him from like 100 feet away.
18:41Just this rhythmic wooden clacking getting louder as I got closer.
18:44It was so out of place and creepy in that peaceful forest setting.
18:48At first, I genuinely thought
18:50maybe some group of friends were playing an elaborate prank
18:53on random people walking through the woods,
18:55or something like that.
18:57Like maybe they were trying to see how people would react
18:59to this weird clown guy just standing there.
19:01But the more I thought about it,
19:04the less sense it made.
19:06This guy didn't even acknowledge me at all.
19:09Didn't look at me.
19:10Didn't try to scare me.
19:12Didn't say anything.
19:13Plus, it was getting pretty dark by then.
19:18Probably around 9.30.
19:20So there really weren't that many other people around to prank anyway.
19:24Most normal people don't go walking alone in the woods
19:26when it's getting dark.
19:28He just stood there completely motionless.
19:31Staring straight ahead down the path.
19:34Like he was looking at something only he could see.
19:36And when I had to walk past him,
19:39I tried my best to act like everything was completely normal
19:42and this was just another regular evening walk.
19:45I kept my headphones in and tried to look casual.
19:48But inside, I was actually pretty terrified.
19:52The only thing that made me feel a little better
19:54was that I could still hear those wooden clogs
19:57clacking behind me.
19:59At least I knew he was walking away in the other direction
20:02and not following me or anything.
20:04But then maybe a minute later,
20:07the clacking sound just stopped.
20:10Complete silence.
20:12I tried to tell myself it was fine.
20:14Maybe he just stopped to tie his shoe or something.
20:17But it was bugging me so much
20:18that I finally turned around to look.
20:21And he was just gone.
20:23Like completely vanished.
20:25I have no idea where he could have gone that fast.
20:29I mean yeah,
20:30there are trees on both sides of the path.
20:32But it's not like there are any buildings
20:33or hiding spots right in that area.
20:36The woods aren't super thick there either, so...
20:39Even if he went into the trees,
20:41I should have been able to see him.
20:43Or at least hear him crashing through the branches and leaves.
20:46I still take that same walk every single night.
20:49Because I'm not going to let some weird guy ruin my routine.
20:52But I've never seen him again.
20:54Not once.
20:56Not the clown guy.
20:57Not anyone else dressed weird.
20:59Nothing.
21:00It's been three weeks,
21:02and I still think about it every time I walk past that spot.
21:05What do you guys think happened?
21:07I still think about it every time I walk past that spot.
21:08I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:09I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:10I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:11I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:12I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:13I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:14I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:15I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:16I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:17I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:18I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:19I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:20I'm not going to let some of you go.
21:21I'm not going to let some of you go.
