05:42because he's been really running these costume design
05:44Broadway streets since the 90s.
05:46So, um, you know, just in the presence of an icon.

05:50You will be creating an avant-garde look based on the themes
05:54of the upcoming movie, Wicked for Good.

07:49So not only did you get a special look at the film, you also get this fabulous special
07:54look at the costumes from the film, which is incredible.
07:57And you're gonna get to talk directly with the man who made it all come to life.
08:01What you see before you is Elphaba and Glinda.
08:04For Elphaba, I leaned into all that was organic.
08:09I was influenced by mycelia, bark, the underside of mushrooms.
08:14Speechless.
08:15With Glinda, it's all that is artificial, all that is sparkly and beautiful.
08:20I then wanted to really establish that idea of the iridescent bubble, swirls and those things that are whimsical.
08:28And pink and green define what the world of Wicked is.
08:32Think about this idea, taking the inspiration of Wicked for Good, but still avant-garde.
08:37And whatever that means to you and your brand and your work, still needs to be fashion.
08:41It's still a runway.

08:59I'm thinking about doing a head-to-toe pink beaded bodysuit with gloves and do a beautiful cape of Arganza.

09:09Well, make sure that you're also thinking about avant-garde, like something you've never seen before.

09:13Because like a pink bodysuit is fabulous, but like Jennifer Lopez literally wears that every single night.

09:34The judges really are going to see what Antonio Estrada is capable of.
09:37I wanted to tap more into the nature side.
09:40So I thought about a beautiful tree.
09:42Nature has no linear lines.

09:45But remember, you know, still want that fashion moment.
09:48I'm trying to use the design style that I discovered for myself, sophisticated streetwear, and push it to avant-garde.
09:57The pressure is turned up to 5,000.
10:02And I really, really, really want to make it to the finale.
10:05So I'm determined to deliver.
10:07Wicked For Good is a movie about friendship being torn apart.
10:11And I kind of want to create a fabric that's kind of like peeling off or being torn apart.
10:17I really want it to be crazy, but in a good way.
10:20I mean, what I'm seeing is really exciting.
10:22Huge fan of texture.
10:23Also, like, your work is, you know, very quiet sometimes.
10:26I think this has to be the fantasy.

10:31My work, it's very quiet because I think that there is beauty in simplicity.
10:38But avant-garde should not be quiet.
10:41I love to play with restraint.
10:43A lot of Elphaba's journey, she's restraining herself because of her skin.
10:49Growing up, I was a little queer kid, and I didn't know really how to express myself.
10:54And so when I saw Wicked, it did help me, like, feel comfortable in my own skin.
10:59And yeah, it really means a lot to me.
11:01I'm obsessed.
11:02And so I want to play with this beautiful crystal overlay off the shoulders.
11:09Just it flowing down to just beautiful fabric.
11:13You did do the first challenge where you had a glove through your giant wind cape,
11:19and that standing still might not be enough.
11:22This needs to be incredible, which you, above all people, can do.

11:30Avant-garde is my bread and butter.
11:32I think that I could do a hybrid of what I've done before,
11:34but these decisions are the ones that are going to push me into the finale,
11:37so I've got to make the right decisions.

11:45I want to create this really amazing avant-garde coat dress with really huge hips.
11:53I don't know if avant-garde is in Jesus' wheelhouse,
11:56because he makes a lot of beautiful dresses, but a beautiful dress is not avant-garde.
12:01Then I want to mold the collar into around the neck and into a hat.
12:06I mean, the silhouette of the dress is something that we've seen before.

13:06Setting myself apart from other designers is a strategy that I've used for the entire competition
13:12because you need to have a unique point of view.

24:49So, originally when we spoke, I wanted to do a catsuit.

24:57I'm gonna do the most beautiful evening gown I've ever made.

25:01And I'm adding the green heart because it's a special place for my alphabet, which is my twin

25:45And I wanted to do a 3D heart because, you know, my brother's doing green and I mixed the

26:07It represents the love that she will forever in her life have for Glenda.

26:15There may be strengths in what you have already, but if you focus on that and make that really
26:19beautiful, then you really won't lead to anything else.
26:22Where I'm at in my process is getting the moss effect full throttle going.
26:27What I see currently are silhouettes that in and themselves are interesting.

34:44So I bought red silk, and I literally shredded it apart.
34:49And Paul mentioned that one of the most important design elements for Wicked is the spiral.
34:56The deconstruction of wrapping that boning and making it look shredded looks fantastic.
35:03The shoe is spectacular, kind of took my breath away.
35:08There was a lot of creativity to it.
35:10I really loved it.
35:12I think it's beautiful.
35:13I think it's avant garde.
35:14And then the shoe looks clunky.
35:16Does it read wicked to me?

35:19The red totally threw me off.
35:20Had this been in green or black, you could have told the same story, and it would have
