00:00Hi, I'm Martin Stallone.
00:02And I'm Sylvester Starr.
00:04And you're watching the Wired Incomplete Interview.
00:07Hi, I'm Sylvester Stallone.
00:09And I'm Martin Starr and you're watching the Wired Autocomplete Interview.
00:16Bravo, bravo.
00:18Hey, we did it.
00:22Here we go.
00:23Why is Sylvester Stallone?
00:25Let me have it.
00:26Hold on, there's more.
00:28It's called Sly.
00:30Okay.
00:31Sylvester was a name I was given.
00:35Because usually in an Italian family, the firstborn male is named after the grandfather.
00:40Luckily, Sylvester.
00:42But at that time, there was a very famous cartoon character named Sylvester.
00:46And I delivered that, so I changed it to Mike.
00:49And then I walked around in New York for a couple of years.
00:52I was a total unknown.
00:53I said, well, I might as well be unknown Sylvester.
00:56Because at least you're going to remember that name.
00:58So we went back and did Sly.
01:01Juxtapositioned the L and Y.
01:03And luckily, there was a great singer named Sly and the Family Stone.
01:07So I just borrowed it permanently.
01:10Who does Sylvester Stallone support football?
01:14Who does Sylvester Stallone support football?
01:17The Philadelphia Eagles, of course.
01:19That was my fantasy.
01:20As a matter of fact, my favorite player wore 22.
01:24And I wore 22 in high school when I was made the team captain.
01:27And I had the dubious distinction of having lost every game.
01:310 and 10.
01:32They're good right now.
01:33It's almost as good as 10 and 0.
01:35It's pretty hard to do.
01:36Pretty hard to do.
01:37How much can Sylvester Stallone curl?
01:44Right now, the most I think curls my hair.
01:48But at one time, I guess, you know, see, Martin said cheek curl and a strict curl.
01:54Right, I know.
01:55Cheat curl, yeah, you know, it's 155, 160, cheek curl.
02:01And a strict curl, I don't know.
02:03I didn't do it too much.
02:04It's a very dangerous, you can tell your muscles that I have.
02:07Probably about 110.
02:10Which one's a cheek curl?
02:11Cheat curl's where you use your body.
02:13Swing, the old swing.
02:14It's a swing.
02:15Yeah, you do a lot more.
02:16I can do plenty of cheek curls.
02:18Can Sylvester Stallone ride a horse?
02:22Yeah, that's one thing I can do.
02:24I started out riding very, very early and riding very cantankerous horses.
02:29Because my father used to buy horses like for $35, $40.
02:33So I learned to ride on that.
02:35At one time, I wanted to be a professional equestrian.
02:38That was my goal.
02:39And I played amateur polo for until I was around 40.
02:44And then I had my last game at the field in Wellington in Florida.
02:48And I said, sayonara, because you cannot trust anything that can gallop and poop at the same time.
02:54That is a good decision.
02:57It seems hard with the polo stick.
03:00Like it's such a small ball.
03:01It's literally like trying to hit a golf ball during an earthquake with a blindfold.
03:06Yeah.
03:09Wow.
03:10These won't be as interesting.
03:12This will be.
03:13How did Martin Starr get his start?
03:17I got lucky.
03:18That's how it happened.
03:19I didn't hustle probably as hard as you had to.
03:22I got real lucky.
03:23I got a TV show at 16.
03:24And then.
03:25At 16.
03:26Off to the races.
03:27Yeah.
03:28Very good.
03:29How old was Martin Starr when?
03:3315 years old.
03:34Stop.
03:35When you did Rocky, how old were you?
03:37How old were you?
03:38I was right.
03:39Like 29 and three quarters.
03:40I was right at the.
03:41The quarters.
03:42You were even.
03:43You were counting the quarters though.
03:44Yeah.
03:45For sure.
03:46I appreciate that.
03:47Who did Martin Starr play in Super Bat?
03:52One of the coke heads?
03:53You guys.
03:54You guys ever heard of cocaine?
03:56I can see why they cast you because you speak so quickly.
03:59Mm-hmm.
04:00Yeah.
04:02Okay.
04:03Martin Starr.
04:04Mmm.
04:05Hey, look at us, son.
04:07Going to the chapel and we're going to get.
04:10What does that mean?
04:11People are Googling us.
04:12Really?
04:13Yeah.
04:14Well, we appreciate it.
04:15We do.
04:16And we have a big surprise coming your way September 21st.
04:19Come and get it.
04:21Here we go.
04:22What is Tulsa King about with Sylvester Stallone?
04:27Do we have a week?
04:28First of all, the first season was I do a big favor.
04:31I'm in prison for 25 years expecting to be rewarded when I get out.
04:35Instead, I'm banished to Tulsa, which I have no idea who's there.
04:40And I have to build a new life.
04:42And I start to build it with a very odd individual like the man on my left here.
04:47And it turns out to be a great gathering of interesting characters.
04:51Not to brag.
04:52Why did Sylvester Stallone write Rocky?
04:56Here we go.
04:57Because I was broke.
04:58I was very close to him.
04:59It was like the last shot, last moment.
05:01This was it.
05:02We're all in.
05:03Period.
05:04So I wrote it because I realized I wasn't getting the kind of role I could really wrap my teeth around.
05:09I was always like the third guy through the door.
05:11And I said, this is going to be it.
05:12I'm going to be like thug number three.
05:14So why don't I write a story about a thug with a good heart?
05:17And actually, he's a very interesting fella because he had the same problems as everybody.
05:22So people identify with this because it's more of a love story than a fight story.
05:27So it had all the components.
05:28But it was a tree into one shadow.
05:32It was a minor miracle.
05:33So I'm still grateful.
05:35Yeah.
05:36Who did Sylvester Stallone based Rocky on?
05:39Well, I'm glad you asked that.
05:41A lot of people think it was based on a fella named Chuck Wepner, Bayonne Bleeder.
05:45And I'll tell you, it was really based on Rocky Marciana, who he and I were literally almost the same size.
05:51He didn't start fighting until he was around 24.
05:54He stopped in the 50s.
05:56So I didn't think any of the studios, hardly anyone unless you were a boxing fan would remember him.
06:01And coincidentally, Ali, Muhammad Ali fought Chuck Wepner.
06:05Chuck sort of stepped on his toe.
06:07Ali got knocked down and it became a big deal.
06:10So when I was trying to pitch the show to studios, I used that as this is the possibility.
06:17This could actually be quite relevant and exciting where this incredible underdog knocks down the ultimate.
06:23Because everyone secretly wants to take one big shot at life and see if they can knock it down.
06:28So that was the identification.
06:30What's the news on Sylvester Stallone?
06:33What's the news?
06:34What's the haps with Sylvester?
06:35Well, you know, we're getting ready for the next season.
06:38We're going to start filming at the end of October.
06:41We premiere September 21st.
06:44So we're doing a lot of work with the writers.
06:47Terrence went to the original writer on it.
06:49And we're coming up with a lot of surprises.
06:51So that's pretty much it.
06:52And I'm finishing writing this biography about the genesis of Rocky,
06:57which is being done by Harper's and Collins.
07:00And that'll be out in springtime.
07:02Am I going to get a free copy?
07:04Or?
07:05Definitely.
07:08Martin.
07:09Martin Starr.
07:10Boy.
07:12Bodhi.
07:13Yep.
07:14I got taken over by the mob.
07:16But he's also a mad genius that takes us to a new level.
07:20And next season, we're really going places with your AI brain.
07:25So you heard it here first.
07:26There you go.
07:27I just made it up.
07:29Martin Starr on Silicon Valley.
07:32That's it.
07:33The good old days.
07:34Guilfoyle, Dinesh, Mike Judge and Alec Berg.
07:38That was a good run.
07:40It's a different vibe in a comedy than on a drama.
07:43I think there's different focus.
07:45Like, we get to do more action stuff.
07:47And there's a lot more focus on making sure story beats are all connected.
07:53And with comedy, you kind of get to focus on the play of it.
08:00Which I guess we get to do a lot, too.
08:01I know.
08:02But this season, you really get very dramatic.
08:05You're wound up in some scenes there.
08:07And I don't think people are just, oh, wow.
08:10I thought he just does dry comedy.
08:13No, no, no.
08:14Not at all.
08:15You run the gamut.
08:16Congrats.
08:17Martin Starr.
08:20MCU crossover.
08:22I was in Spider-Man.
08:24And then, technically, I was also in The Hulk.
08:26Kevin Feige once said that the two characters were connected.
08:29But I don't necessarily understand how that is.
08:33But I respect his overall view of the MCU world.
08:38So I won't disagree with him.
08:40But I played a pizza man in Hulk and then played a teacher in Mr. Harrington in Spider-Man.
08:46That's the full spectrum, man.
08:47Hey.
08:48I've had a good run.
08:49Martin Starr.
08:50Glow Up.
08:51Glow Up.
08:52Glow Up.
08:53TBD.
08:54We're still working on it.
08:55It'll happen.
08:56But, you know, patience.
08:58Appreciate your patience.
08:59What is it?
09:00Glow Up is like when you go from being very unattractive to then all of a sudden you're
09:06now attractive.
09:07Oh, okay.
09:08So we're still working.
09:09We're working our way there.
09:10I think you're getting taller every episode.
09:12Just saying.
09:13Yeah, no, I'm working.
09:14I'm adding vertebrae in.
09:15All right, slide.
09:16Did you have fun?
09:17Yeah, I did.
09:18Good hanging with you.
