Everton Moyes post 2-1 defeat to Liverpool
Anfield Liverpool UK
Transcript
00:00You know it's always difficult here, but I think you gave them quite a game.
00:03Do you feel the draw would have been a fair outcome?
00:07Well, I think we made it really difficult by our first half performance.
00:10I thought we didn't do enough.
00:12We had a couple of chances in the first half ourselves,
00:14so it wasn't as if we didn't have any.
00:17I thought Liverpool's finishing was clinical.
00:19I thought technically the first goal was an excellent goal from the finish.
00:25We just lacked a little bit maybe when we did get that,
00:27but the second half performance was certainly more like what I hoped we would have played from the start.
00:32Was there a particular message there at half-time?
00:35Yeah, there was, yeah.
00:37Not for disclosure?
00:39No.
00:40Sometimes you have to keep things amongst the players and what we want them to do
00:43and how we want them to play,
00:44but we didn't want them to play the way we started the game, that's for sure.
00:48Fair enough.
00:48Is there an air of frustration for you that you've got Freelich out wide
00:52who delivers real quality
00:54and there's just that lack of quality inside the 18-yard box for you?
00:59Well, we still need to supply the forwards with really good opportunities,
01:04so we know that.
01:06We've been well aware of this.
01:08I've said many times, and I've said it again and I'm repeating myself,
01:11we don't have the 70s or 80s or even more it takes than maybe to buy certain players.
01:16We've had to buy within our means and we'll hugely support the ones we've got
01:22because they'll score us goals and I'm sure they'll get quite a few by the end of the season.
01:29I thought Barry came on and had moments as well, linked to play a couple of times,
01:32so he had bits of that, but he's still learning as well
01:36and certainly it's a big place to learn coming to Anfield.
01:39You look quite frustrated on the final whistle.
01:42Is that more to do with the stoppage time period?
01:44Yeah, I think three minutes was very strange.
01:49We've been playing a couple of teams who have taken quick free kicks in the games
01:51and they've caught us out, but today every quick free kick had to be stopped
01:55and brought back for the whistle and then we get a booking for it.
01:59I find it quite unbelievable, the game,
02:02whether they're talking about trying to keep the game quick,
02:04ball and play time, I found that difficult.
02:11Can you take any pride from the way that your side came back in that game?
02:14Because I've tuned you down on the way that you played in the first half.
02:17It could have been so easy to have gone on there.
02:19Yeah, it could have been, but if I'm being honest,
02:21the way I'm at it at the moment, I'm more disappointed how I didn't start the game better
02:24because it wasn't the plan.
02:26This was Liverpool's third game in six days and I have to be fairly,
02:29so I'm aware of that.
02:30We had an opportunity because maybe we would have caught them with a bit of fatigue, etc.
02:37And we didn't, we allowed them to.
02:39So I'll look at the first half and why.
02:42I'll look at myself first of all and see if we should have done something different
02:47and better than we did do.
02:49But look, great credit.
02:51It was a bit more like Everton in the second half, a bit more like us.
02:54Look, I don't think MD would have probably turned and said,
02:58hey, you didn't deserve it if you got back into the game.
03:01But I think we just gave ourselves probably a little bit of task too far by going too down.
03:06Have you ever seen that before, a free kick, David, being yellow-carded?
03:14And is it, as far as you know, is that kind of within the laws of the yellow?
03:19I don't know.
03:20I might reverse it and ask you boys what you think.
03:22Do you think that's the laws?
03:23And the ladies, sorry.
03:26I don't think you'd have said anything if we'd taken a quick free kick.
03:30I don't think any of you would.
03:32So we're saying the same thing.
03:34Is everything stopped now?
03:36So nothing now would go before the referee's whistle if, you know,
03:40and why did he not allow the game?
03:42A game which maybe needed the referee to allow it to go a little bit
03:47might have quickened the game up at times as well.
03:50So I don't know.
03:50I'm asking you boys.
03:51I'm asking you.
03:52You should answer your own things with your own written bit
03:54and what you think about it.
03:57David?
03:59Check on mail and roll papers.
04:01Yeah, he just picked up a small injury
04:03in his hip groin area.
04:05I don't think it's too bad,
04:06but it was just enough that it wasn't going to get him involved.
04:11David, your team's got an excellent goal.
04:13Could you just talk about it?
04:15Yeah, it was.
04:16I thought Jack was a threat at times throughout the game.
04:20I thought we were a threat at times against them, you know,
04:25we just didn't maybe defend.
04:26But I thought, I don't know if he gets the assist for that for the cross
04:30because I think he crosses it to the back post
04:32and then he sets it up for Gans.
04:35But it was a really nicely worked goal, good goal.
04:38But we'd had a couple.
04:39We'd just started to find a way.
04:41We looked as if we were becoming a bigger threat.
04:43We were getting the ball out to him a bit more easier
04:45and quicker in the second half.
04:49So, look, I thought it was a good goal.
04:52I thought we scored a really good goal.
04:53And we played for Ghana because he doesn't get that many.
04:55But it was an important goal.
04:58But we just couldn't quite build enough.
05:00And obviously the steam got taken out of the game
05:02in the last five minutes or so.
05:04We couldn't build up any more energy.
05:07OK, folks.
05:08Cheers. Thank you.
