00:01It's a country that relies strongly on cocoa production to support local livelihoods.
00:06Saotomi in Principe is lush with cocoa plantations and rainforests,
00:11but is grappling with mountain land degradation
00:13due to agricultural expansion and the effects of climate change.
00:17Experts are doing what they can to shield biodiversity.
00:25The cocoa production depends on forest cover,
00:28mainly from big trees.
00:30So there was a need to help these cooperatives rehabilitate,
00:33re-planting and re-stocking techniques.
00:41UN experts and the government have launched an initiative
00:44to restore ecosystems and boost sustainable cocoa production.
00:48The cooperative gave us management training to learn how to manage our money and production.
01:01More than 37 producer groups and some 2,000 families have benefited from the initiative and its work.
