Inside Elland Road Podcast | Farke gets it wrong with Aaronson defence but right with Gray stance
Transcript
00:00But speaking of Rene and Clarke, the reason they came to mind other than their unbelievable contribution and what they were as players was that I was watching them this week when I got the chance to have an early look at Paris 75, a new film.
00:16Harvey Marcus is a Leeds fan, lifelong Leeds fan and documentary maker.
00:20And he's made this documentary about the European Cup final, the kind of build up to it, the team, the kind of what it was like for fans in those days,
00:28what it was like for female fans at Elland Road and these female fans who followed the team into Europe and how remarkable it was to go abroad to watch your team in the mid-70s.
00:38And then, of course, what happened on the night itself.
00:41One of the biggest games, if not the biggest game in Leeds United's history and how they were robbed and the kind of the violence.
00:47And it doesn't kind of shy away from any of that. And it asks some really interesting questions.
00:50Yeah, it just brought it home to me again that Leeds United were the best team, the biggest and best football club in Europe.
01:02You think about them taking on Bayern Munich today. Say they got a glamour pre-season game.
01:09It wouldn't probably be much of a contest, would it?
01:13If Bayern went full strength and Leeds went full strength and there was something on the line, it probably wouldn't be a contest.
01:20I'm picking a Leeds 2-1 win.
01:27You're going Anton Stackfree kick, probably road on header from a corner.
01:33Probably road on.
01:34Yeah, probably road on.
01:36Yeah, but back then, I mean, Leeds were the better side.
01:43It's absolutely remarkable to say that, isn't it?
01:45The Leeds United were the better side than Bayern Munich and more deserving of that trophy.
01:51But what's really interesting is that there's a part at the start of that documentary where lots of Leeds fans outside Elland Road are asked,
01:58why do we sing We Are the Champions, Champions of Europe?
02:01And the results, Chris O'Connor, will surprise you because there are obviously a number who know exactly why and there are a number who don't.
02:10And that really, really surprised me because, I don't know, like if you're new to a club like supporting a club or if you're growing up supporting a club,
02:21surely there's like a natural curiosity that leads you to ask, why do we sing that?
02:24Or you go and look it up on the internet.
02:25But yeah, there's quite a few people that admitted on camera that they didn't know why that song was sung.
02:30So I think this documentary is quite important, really, just to let people know this is exactly why we sing this song.
02:38And I think it's pretty amazing that something that happened 51 years ago, sorry, 50 years ago,
02:46is still like a rallying cry for a club, you know, half a century later.
02:54You know, and you think of like some of the big moments in the last couple of seasons where the fans have been needed at Elland Road.
03:00And that's the song that tends to be sung when they're on their feet, torn in the scarves round.
03:04And it can be absolutely breathtaking.
03:06Yeah, that's really interesting.
03:10You mentioned, I wonder if there's an age demographic with the breakdown of who does know and doesn't know.
03:17So I just remember growing up, I think any leads fan of my generation, there's still this big, like shadow or weight that you kind of, you just knew of.
03:25And, yeah, it would be bizarre to not think of you thinking, why are Leeds singing?
03:31We're the champions of Europe, you know, that would be quite an easy Google.
03:35But, yeah, maybe that's the modern football fan is less interested in the past, maybe.
03:43I'm not sure.
03:45They're more interested in, you know, transfer side, the future, that sort of side of the game.
03:50Not sure, can't posit an answer.
03:53But where and when can we watch it, Graham?
03:55Is it released yet?
03:56So it is, it's coming out on October 10th and it's in a lot of independent cinemas across West Yorkshire and there's ones in London.
04:09Go and have a look at the website, Paris 75 website or the Yorkshire Evening Post.
04:14I wrote a story about it this week and the listings are there for where you can see it and when.
04:18Already selling out, I think, in quite a few places.
04:20So if you want to go see it and I would definitely recommend it, even if it's for, like, Paul Reaney's home footage that he released to be used, which I thought was great.
04:30And also his kind of, it's quite a spiky interview at times with him.
04:34Like, he's quite combative.
04:37It's almost like sparring rather than speaking at times with the guy who's making the documentary, Harvey.
04:44I'd recommend it, you know.
04:46And not every club has history that has something quite as special and incredible as that Leeds United team, you know, as that era.
04:59So I definitely think it's something that I would want to watch if it was about my club.
