TALES FROM NERDVILLE by Joe Bonamassa
McCRAY'S WAY.
String bending, à la blues great Larry McCray
A signature element in Larry McCray’s style is that he has a very distinct and unusual bending technique where he will “marry” two bends within one long phrase. In this lesson, Joe Bonamassa shows us a few ways to incorporate this technique into soloing ideas.

00:00Hi there guys. Joe Bonamassa here at the beautiful Guitar World Center for the Performing Arts in
00:15Manhattan, New York City. I had the honor of producing a record with my friend Josh Smith
00:21for an artist from Michigan named Larry McCray. And Larry's always been one of my favorite players
00:27over the last 35 years. And getting to work with him, not only as a singer and a songwriter,
00:33but as a guitar player, I was able to pick up a few pointers from him. He would show his stuff when
00:39we weren't recording. And he has this really unique way of bending, where he kind of marries the two
00:46bends into one long phrase. And I'm not doing it like he plays it, because he invented it, but
00:53I'm kind of paraphrasing, no pun intended. So if we're in the key of B, it would go something like this.
01:04So if you marry both of them together,
01:06you know, and you can actually, if you want to extend it.
01:20So if you're playing, you know,
01:21And there's a cool one in E. I'm going to try to get it in one take. If not, we're going to edit it.
01:43And that's kind of a hybrid between what Larry McCray would do, or Chris Kane. And they have this,
01:49like, both those guys, some of my favorite players, because they have this ability to string
01:53phrases together, and have this infinite stream of ideas. So thank you, Larry McCray, for the tips.
02:00I'm sorry, I'm going to steal them and put them in my repertoire, but I am an equal opportunity thief.
02:19All right.
02:20But this is on the page, and you ask,
02:23are you perfect.
02:24We appreciate it.
02:25Okay, we have to stay the same guy.
02:27I am fred.
02:28lid
02:32All right.
02:33I am happy enough.
02:35We aren't let you come back to school.
02:37I'm happy enough.
02:38But this is working.
02:39I am happy, not even though it's beneficial,
02:41None of it is a problem.
02:42I am happy enough.
02:44We see you all.
02:45I'm happy about this rumor's performance.
