Tropical Storm Gabrielle has officially formed in the Atlantic after weeks of quiet, but it’s off to a rough start. Battling dry air and strong wind shear, Gabrielle is struggling to organize—yet the National Hurricane Center says it could still become a hurricane by Monday.
With sustained winds near 50 mph and moving west-northwest, Gabrielle poses no immediate threat to the U.S. East Coast or Caribbean islands. But Bermuda should stay alert, and forecasters are also eyeing a new tropical wave off Africa that may develop next week.
The Atlantic hurricane season is far from over, and this could be just the beginning of a busy stretch.
