Gabrielle Fights to Survive in the Atlantic—Hurricane Still Possible

Tropical Storm Gabrielle has officially formed in the Atlantic after weeks of quiet, but it’s off to a rough start. Battling dry air and strong wind shear, Gabrielle is struggling to organize—yet the National Hurricane Center says it could still become a hurricane by Monday.  With sustained winds near 50 mph and moving west-northwest, Gabrielle poses no immediate threat to the U.S. East Coast or Caribbean islands. But Bermuda should stay alert, and forecasters are also eyeing a new tropical wave off Africa that may develop next week. 00:00Tropical Storm Gabrielle just spun to life in the Atlantic, but it's already struggling to survive.

00:05Formed after a long, quiet stretch this hurricane season, Gabrielle was expected to charge up fast.

00:11But right now? It's a swirling mess of clouds with dry air and strong winds tearing it apart.

00:17The National Hurricane Center says it's disorganized and battling hostile conditions, which means it may weaken before it gets stronger.

00:25Still, forecasters aren't counting it out yet.

00:28Gabrielle could slowly intensify over the weekend and possibly become a Category 1 hurricane by Monday.

00:33Right now, it's packing 50 mph winds and moving west-northwest at 15 mph, about 850 miles east of the Leeward Islands.

00:43The good news? No direct impacts are expected in the Caribbean or U.S. East Coast.

00:48But Bermuda should keep a close watch. This storm could still shift.

00:52And just as Gabrielle stirs, another tropical wave is getting ready to leave Africa.
