00:00Journey to the West, Chapter 104, The Tang Monk and the River
00:05Wukong and his companions walked through the western paradise.
00:17The road weaved through a field of flowers and toured the spirit mountain.
00:23Bhajie looked up at the huge mountain and shook his head.
00:26It won't be easy to climb that.
00:31Wukong laughed.
00:33Don't ask me to carry you.
00:36The travelers soon arrived at a river with a strong current.
00:42Waves crashed into jagged rocks, spraying water everywhere.
00:47This river looks dangerous, said Wujing.
00:51But we must cross it to get to the spirit mountain.
00:54Bhajie sighed.
00:57We will never be able to cross this river safely.
01:02Let's just go home.
01:04Nonsense, said Wukong.
01:08Look over there.
01:10The monkey pointed upstream.
01:13A thin log lay across the river.
01:16It wobbled and shook as the water rushed under it.
01:19The Tang Monk looked at the log.
01:23Don't be silly, Wukong.
01:25We can't walk across that log.
01:27It's too thin.
01:29And it looks quite slippery.
01:32But that log is the only way to reach the spirit mountain, said Wukong.
01:36You must believe that it's safe.
01:40Watch me.
01:42The monkey hopped onto the log and ran across the river and back.
01:53See?
01:54He said.
01:55It's safe.
01:56Bhajie snorted.
02:00You don't weigh much, Wukong.
02:03But if I step on that log, it will break.
02:06I believe Wukong, said Wujing.
02:09We must walk across the log.
02:13Follow me, master, said Wukong.
02:16He pulled the Tang Monk toward the log.
02:20The monk trembled with fear.
02:23Don't make me walk across that.
02:25I'll fall into the river and drown.
02:28Let's just fly over the river, suggested Bhajie.
02:32We could carry master and the horse.
02:36No, insisted Wukong.
02:38The Tang Monk must make the entire journey by himself.
02:42We're here to protect him, not to carry him.
02:46Buddha won't allow master to have the true scriptures if he doesn't take every step himself.
02:52Just then, an old man appeared in a boat.
02:57I can take you across the river, said the man.
03:01Thank you, said the Tang Monk.
03:05He walked to the riverbank.
03:08My companion wanted me to walk across that log, but...
03:11The monk gasped.
03:15There's something wrong with your boat, he said to the man.
03:18It has no bottom.
03:20Water is flowing right through it.
03:23The boat is safe, said the man.
03:26Please climb in.
03:28Buddha is waiting.
03:30With a bit more hesitation, the Tang Monk stepped into the boat.
03:34He was shocked to find that he didn't sink.
03:45He sat on the edge of the boat as Wu Jing led the horse aboard.
03:50Bhajie and Wukong followed.
03:57The boat glided swiftly across the river.
03:59Suddenly, there was a splash.
04:06The Tang Monk looked at the water and saw a body floating downstream.
04:12He screamed.
04:14A man is drowned!
04:16Wukong put his hand on the monk's shoulder and smiled.
04:19It's you, master.
04:22What?
04:23Said the monk.
04:24Me?
04:26Wukong is right!
04:27Cried Bhajie.
04:28It is you!
04:30Look again, master.
04:31Said Wu Jing, smiling.
04:34The Tang Monk looked at the body more carefully.
04:38It was wearing the same Buddhist robe that he was wearing.
04:41It is me.
04:44Said the monk quietly.
04:46But how?
04:48You got rid of your mortal body, master.
04:50Said Wukong.
04:52You're a spirit now.
04:54You're one of us.
04:56Bhajie beamed.
04:57The boat soon reached the other riverbank, and the travelers stepped out.
05:16As they walked up the slope of the spirit mountain, the Tang Monk laughed in amazement.
05:22I feel so light, he said.
05:27I feel like I could run right up this mountain.
05:30Good, said Bhajie.
05:32Perhaps you could carry me.
05:35Everybody laughed as they continued up the mountain.
